Opening my HDV project takes 45 min!!??

I have a HDV (1080i) project, which has steadily grown in size. I have captured about 20 hours of material and have made a few sequences. One sequence is 5 minutes, one is 102 min and one is 90 min.
Is this a gigantic project, because it takes FCP 5.0 45 min to open the project.
When it is open it works fine and is not slow at all.
I am running it on a G5 2.7 dual with 3 GB RAM.
I have tried to make a copy of the project file, but that doesn't help.
Then I have tried to copy everything from the project in to a new project, but the FCP crashes.
I also wanted to make a copy of the 90 min sequence, but then FCP also crashed.
Please help if you can.
Kasp

I thought that since HDV has approx. the same bit-rate as DV it wouldn't differ that much. Once the project is open, there are no problems and everything works exactly as it did, when I was editing DV.
I could live with the 45 min start-up (get a cup of coffee and checking my mail), but I am concerned about expanding the projects. Usually I make copies of sequences, when I make new cuts, so I can go back in the process, if needed.
I don't dare to add information to this project, so what should I do? I actually still have about 3 hours of material I need to capture...:-(
I wouldn't mind to go down in quality, but since my 20 hours are already captured I am concerned about the work-around to get the project "running"... I would really prefer not to delete any media (also all the unused), since I am in the middle of the editing and can't say which will be in the film and which won't.
thanks a lot:-)

  • FCP crashes, and opening and saving projects take too much time

Since my upgrade to FCP 5.0.4 I’m having trouble on several aspects of FCP.
I am using an Xserve raid storage, connected via fiberchannel to an Xserve with 10.4.4.
The editing computers are connected via fiberchannel and Xsan to the central storage.
FCP runs on an Apple G5, and my projects run from an external disk described as above. Al the other FCP scratch disk settings are also set on the external disks.
    Example:
I’m using the FCP 5.0.4 with the multi-clip mode, and one of the consequences is, that my projects become relatively large. The larger they become, the longer it takes to open (up to 10 minutes) it and to save it (up to 2 minutes). Together with these problems, FCP crashes a lot.
I set my “auto-save” at an interval of 15 minutes, to prevent to loose a lot of work, but when it takes 2 minutes to “auto-save” each time, I loose a lot of time.
So when my project was 224 MB, I made a copy of my project, and opened it from a local drive. Opening the project took also 10 minutes. But when it was open, “saving” the project took only 15 seconds, instead of 2 minutes. The “auto-save” was still on the external scratch disk. “Auto-saving” still took 2 minutes. So I set the “auto-save” on a local scratch disk, and after that, it took only 15 seconds. Opening the project still took 10 minutes. And the FCP didn’t crash frequently.
My conclusion would be that the problems have something to do with the size of the project in combination with the connection with the external scratch disks. Is this correct? If yes, how do I solve this.
And if not, what else could it be?
    Out of memory
Another problem occurred when my project was 327 MB. I had a multi-clip sequence of 100 minutes, with 4 camera angles and a lot of cuts and effects in it. When I tried to “nest” the sequence, it didn’t work and got the message: “out of memory” . Then FCP crashed.
When I opened the project again (it took 10 minutes), I could not save it anymore: ”out of memory”. So now I cannot work with this project anymore.
    How do I solve this?
Is my project or sequence too big?
    Another crash example
FCP crashed sometimes, when I switch my “Ëxternal Video” setting from “Blackmagic 8 bit” to “Firewire PAL”. Could this have something to do with it the problems I previously described?
Can anyone help me with these problems?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I've run into a simliar problem and I believe I traced the issue down to the number of files on the drive. A drive I was using had over 600,000 files on it. Opening projects took 5+ minutes, saving took 2+, for a 15 minute simple project.
See if that is your issue.
Edit: 600,000 files on the scratch/capture disk.

  • Project Takes FOREVER to Open and Close

We have a large RoboHTML project that outputs to a WebHelp
system. The version of RoboHelp is X 5, possibly a version after
that, I think - but dated 2004. Two of us share this project, but
we don't use Version Control. The size of the project is about 45
MB, and includes several subfolders of topic HTMs. My coworker has
the same issues, possibly a bit faster than what I have, but still
excessive Open and Close Project times.
It takes an extremely long time to open, like about 10
minutes or more. When I select to Close Project, the CPU Usage
shown in Task Manager is up to 100 % and stays there, so the
closing process is maxed out and frozen, and obviously isn't happy.
Even when I close other applications, the project can take over 30
minutes to close - no error messages, just hourglassing. While I'm
using the project, it doesn't max out. There have been times when,
as much as I hated to do it, I had to do an End Task with Task
Manager because the project wasn't closing (and I had to leave).
Also, note that the CPD file of this project is over 4 MB. I
just was reading about deleting the CPD file, so I plan on doing
    that.
I'm not sure of any more details I can provide. While I'm
working on the project, there are usually no freezes or response
time problems. Just the extremely long Open Project time - and even
    longer Close Project time.
I would so appreciate any solutions or ideas. Thanks!!!
    Susan

Update - I deleted the CPD file, and it opened a lot faster!!
It also closed in a reasonable amount of time - however, I did not
work in the project for a while before I closed it. So we'll see
what happens when I close it at the end of the day.
So, the deletion of the CPD file may have solved the problem.
However, if anyone wants to offer feedback on this possible
    solution, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Susan

  • Opening a new project: no choice possible DV - HDV

    Hi all,
recently got a problem when trying to open a new project. The pop-up menu allows DV only, the second choice is no longer available. It presumably happened when I deleted all projects I have done in AVCHD in the meanwhile. My video format is m2ts (Panasonic HDC-SD100). My PC hardware: Intel dual-core 2.8 GHz, 3.5 GB RAM, MSI Nvidia GeForce N9600GT 1GB DDR3 running under Windows XP 3rd ed. and Premiere CS4.
    Thanks for any help.
    Arno

Looks like Harm got the points, and well-deserved ones, I might add.
He's made me a deal, that if he gets the "lunch" at the Adobe cafeteria, he'll pick me up in Arizona to be his "guest," on his way from Holland to San Jose! I'll host him as my guest, but he'll have to find a way to get to Phoenix.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS do I get any points for a "nice" reply, even if it didn't really help you, like Harm's reply did???????

  • Elements 9 Edit takes 2 mins to open

I installed Elements 9 on my shinny new HP Touchsmart TM2 and found that it took up to 2 mins (if at all) to open edit. I spoke with Adobe Tech help and they were worse than useless. As soon as they found out that my processor was only 1.2 GHz and didn't meet the spec of 1.6 GHz they didn't want to know. They just keep repeating the same phrase from their crib sheets, with no appreciation of the problem even though I told them I could run Lightroom.
Anyway I found the solution in another part of this forum. Someone was having the same problem with the Organize button, so I tried his solution.  On entering the welcome screen press ctl + Alt+ shift at the same time open Organise and keep the keys press until Catalogue manager opens. Select your catalogue and select repair, enven if it says no errors, select repair anyway. This did the trick and my opening times have gone from 2 mins to 10 sec.  Result!!

  • Premiere Pro CC project takes 1 hour to open !

    Hi everybody,
After a Premiere Pro CC 7.1 crash, I tried to reopen my last project and the loading of this project took 1 hour to reopen normally. The yellow loading progression bar is freezing approximatively at 30 % of full load. 1 hour later, my project is open without any problems. If i save the project again, quit Premiere and reopen my project, it loads in a few seconds...
I tried many things before waiting the hour :
Kill Premiere during the load, reopen a backup of my project : same problem > load is very long and seems to be frozen
Shutdown computer and restart then reload the project : same problem > load is very long and seems to be frozen
Open the crashed project in another computer (Mac) without the media attached : same problem > load is very long and seems to be frozen
Delete all the media cache folder and empy trash.
This happend several times on a big project (lots of media, multi cameras) usually after many CTRL-Z action that are (I think...) too fast.
My footage are clean and on a Raid 0 disk
It's not really dramatic but when it happens when a director is arround me, and we spend 1 hour to wait for a simple project load... that's really not cool :-/
    Anyone got an idea ?
My configuration : Windows 8.1, Premiere Pro CC 7.1, 32 GB Ram, Bi Intel Xeon E5-2630 2.3 GHz
    Thanks !
    noar
PS : I happened for the first time a few days ago. I've posted this thread : http://forums.adobe.com/message/5838103#5838103
Since, it happend 3 times in two days...

Please tell us, what type of footage you are using ?
Quicktime H264 from Canon 5D Mark III, few Go Pro clips (5 ou 6 in 2 hours) and some AVCHD clips (drone shots)
What are the effects you have applied ?
None except size and position of one camera to make a pip and see my both cam during my prework
what is the duration of the project ?
1 "long" timeline with a 2 hours length
Are you using any third party plugins e.g. Magic bullets ?
    no
    Any 3rd party hardware e.g. blackmagic ?
no. Only one graphic card (Geforce 680, 4 GB) with 3 displays attached
You can try one thing, try to import whole project in After Effects, then export that as as new premiere pro project..
When I import the project in After Effects, same thing : the load is very long ! ...
one more thing you can try, open the project inthe premiere pro and export as FCP XML.
Now open a new premiere pro blank project, import FCP xml file in the premiere pro.
I can't do that when it bugs because to export as FCP XML, I have to load the original project... and that's the problem ! I tried to unzip the PRPROJ file (that's a Gzip file...) and parse de XML in it with and xml validator. Everything seems to be ok in my project. So I think the problem comes from the medias or the database ? ... But that's completely weird that when I try to open it on another computer (without the medias, with another database) I've got the exact same problem... So It's really the project that is corrupted.
Next time it will bug (sure it will...) this is what I'll do :
Copy my crashed project on desktop and keep it. After 1 hour of opening, I'll save the project with a new name and compare de 2 file size. Just to confirm that my crashed project and my good project are different. If they have the same size, maybe It's more Premiere than the project itself. If they are different, I'll compare them to see what changed between the crashed and the good one.
Writing in this forum I'm thinking about a new lead : Since PRPRO CC, the prproj files are gzip files (that's why the file size are so small compared to old version). So when PRPRO crash, maybe it corrupt the gzip compression of the project ? That's weird because a software like winrar can unzip the crashed project a reveal the xml file in it. So I'll try to extract the XML file in the crashed project and re-gzip it and rename it .prproj ?
Feel free to write some ideas or tests that could help me to understand this bug and how to resolve or quickly repair the damaged caused...
Hope these will work for you , crossing my fingers
Hope to. 3 crash with the director behind me that's not really cool when you're a freelance with your own machine...
THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR PRECIOUS HELP AND THE TIME YOU SPEND TO READ MY PROBLEMS !!

  • Why does my ipad2 take 3 min to open email?

I have the iPad 2 and everything works fine except email. I open my email it wait several min every time. I can go to my iPhone and get all my email and read it before the iPad opens the first email.
I have rebooted it and updated everything. It's so frustrating.

Solved my problem by reading another thread:

  • Problems with exporting my first HDV project

    Hello everybody
When I want to export my 30 min HDV project it takes forever around 10-15 hours. When I finally got a self-contained quicktime movie file exported. It does not play in anything but FCP. Why is it so slow and how can I make it go faster?
I have a Macbook 1, 83 ghz 1 gb ram and FCP 5.0 the video is compressed to HDV1080i50.
    Rendering is finished.
    Thanksful for help
    /David

Without wanting to spell it out to you, yes, as the other guys have correctly interpreted, the article highlights the fact that HDV is processor/RAM intensive, and it seems to me that your system just hasn't got the grunt to make HDV a fluid format to work in... One of the main hassles is the re-conforming of the GOP structure (HDV is an mpeg2 type format) when exporting HDV sequences, which is why many people capture/transcode to a full i-frame format to avoid GOP structures all together.
Without meaning to seem rude or brush off your original enquiry, there is loads of information on the forum about pro's/cons of HDV... a simple search will help you out.
    regards,
    J

  • Cannot open my latest project

Been working for weeks on this new movie project. Almost complete. 1hr 20 min or so. Have had the usual odd bugs now and then but never encountered what happened just a few hours ago. When I try to open my saved project (which is stored on my LaCie 1 TB ext. drive), I see it starts loading, then all of sudden the imovie application icon shuts off and I can't view my project. I've tried re starting both the iMac and the drive but to no avail. Is my project likely "corrupted" ? What are the options. Thanks

I would try the oft applied maintenance of deleting preferences and doing a permissions repair. To delete preferences, close iMovie and trash the file named com.apple.iMovie.plist found in User (the house icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app found in HD/Applications/Utilities. In the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window seclect your hard drive icon and then click on repair permissions. Takes about 3 minutes to repair. Then relaunch iMovie and see if you still have the problem. iMovie will recreate the .plist file that you deleted.

  • Preparing a HDV project for a DVD

I've finshed a 80 min HDV project in FCP.
I also have compressor and DVD studio pro.
What is the best way to just the project to DVD-r?

Another question to add. I have edited a hd video that is about 30 minutes. When I export to Compressor, it takes FOREVER. I am on the second day of rendering, and it says that there is going to be about 3 more days. After reading a thread on here, I am not even sure that, even if I get it to a manageable file size to fit on the dvd, the dvd will even work in any dvd player. Any help?

  • Abnormally Long HDV Project Load Time with CS3

I have a relatively small HDV project, about 30 clips captured with HDVSplit. I find that after the CS3 splash screen goes by and while the project loading progress panel is displayed it takes about 2.5 minutes for the project work space to appear. Everything seems to work fine once the work space is displayed re: CS3 editing functionality.
Has anyone else run into this slow loading problem? Any suggestions as to what may be causing this? The clips are relatively short and the entire sequence on the timeline is less than 15 min.

    For Pete's Sake man!
I am new here and there seems to be a few guys that have their heads so far up Adobe's *** that you do not see what you are saying.
    I understand Howards frustration.
You people think that everyone must go out and buy All of Adobe's Products. To assume any person must be forced to buy a program they do not want or cannot afford is plain rude and obnoxious.
We are not all professionals like some of you, some of do actually shoot weddings, like myself. Why the heck must I buy more programs than I need (although I won After Effects Already)!!?? If you are all so professional why are you on these forums instead of making features in Hollywood? Dammit I get so upset by some people.
You leave people hating Adobe and their products. I have been reading this forum for about a day now and there is a common pattern. A guy will have a problem, 2 people will complain that he posts on the forums, 3 people will tell him to get rid of his camera, 4 will say buy After Effects or go buy this plugin. It is ridiculous! You are people are insane.
Final Cut Studio is by far a better option, you buy it and it works straight out of the box, no plugins no go buy another application. I am not an Apple supporter is hater, it seems that everyday I struggle with Adobe is one day I consider moving my business to Apple and Final Cut.
Premiere Elements is for kids. I wanted a professional editng program that was able to do it all in one, Adobe seemed to offer this.
Let us think about for a minute lads. It is either PC or Mac, Mac has good points but the initial investment is quite large so let us put it aside for now. PC. What editing software is there for PC. Sony Vegas, Premiere, AVID, Edius, Avid Liquid/Pinnacle, Ulead, Movie Maker, Power Director/Producer, and various others. So what do you chose....
Vegas, just does not have it all you know
Avid Liquid, again it's a bit for beginners
Avid, wow too bg for the guy starting out,
Premiere, the best pick of the bunch,
the rest are for kids and real amateurs.
Buw wait Premiere cannot function on it's own, it needs a plugin to this and a plugin to do that, it forever needs plugins. The only thing it is good for is just SD. I want to edit HD or HDV in Premiere I must go buy Cineform, what a load of crap. I want to do basic little effects,go buy After Effects, I want to colour Grade, go buy this or that plugin.
The cost of Premiere is fairly good, but before you can use it you need to buy After Effects (for effects simple and advanced), Photoshop (for titles), Cineform (well to edit anything actually and to support formats and proper 1920 x 1080 HD 4:4:4 uncompressed), and add that all up and it costs a shitload.
So that leads us back to Final Cut Pro where it all makes sense. You buy one G5, and one Final Cut Studio and it gets the job done all in one wonder. NOBODY OUT THERE CAN ARGUE WITH THE BENEFIT OF THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Now this entire post was pointless since I know everyone out there could not wait to get to the end just they could quote me and argue. You reading this did not even bother to see it from an objective point of view, I know for a fact. Whilst reading you were not listening. So this post was pointless, because nobody will STILL get it.
Disgruntled Adobe End user. I am returning CS3 back to Adobe for a refund.

  • How can I open an AEP project and make all media OFFLINE?

    Hi There,
I am working with an AEP file that is on the network that has pretty heavy media files linked to the project. Every time I open the file over the network, AE takes FOREVER to open it. I remember somebody showed me a way to open up a file and making all the media offline. Something like holding ALT when pressing the open button on the Open File dialog. Although, I can't remember if this is right. I'm on a Mac, and I'd like to know if there is a way to do this so I can open up the project without waiting, and simply link the files that I really need to be linked so I can work quicker.
Anybody have any suggestion? Thank you for your time and help!

    >You can just change the name of the folder where your sources are stored.
That works well for Windows, but Mac OS is a little trickier. The OS keeps track of folder name changes (even on network directories) and will re-direct requests appropriately. Very cool for users, very bad if you're trying to fool a program like AE. (Had to struggle with this about a month ago to offline some files.)
The only way I was able to make it work was by changing the name of the folder from a different computer while the main computer was disconnected from that server.

    I have a MacBook Pro , Model Identifier MacBook Pro8,2 , MAC OX S 10.7.4
I noticed that if I open Final Cut Projects created on other/older models MacBook Pro Laptops or MacPro Desktops, the fonts used in the previously created FCP projects, change their font spacing! which distorts the look of the Text that was written, by oevrlapping on other things that were put & present on the screen.. Another similar probelm is that the Vector shaped used for example to highlight certain words or shapes, also change their position on the screen so that they no longer highlight exact things that we once used these vectors to highlight or outline... Anyone knows how to solve this problem please?? I made sure that the same fonts are available in the Library in both old and newer computers...
    thanks in advance..

You might want to take your question to the FCP forum - if you copied all fonts to your Library>Fonts folder and restarted they should be recognized by all applications. I know that this works for Adobe products, anyway.

  • BEWARE: Loss of metadata when opening OnLo CS4 project in OnLo CS5

I had recorded a large number of takes over a two day shoot into OnLo CS4. I was pretty detailed as I shot the takes, using the comment, description, and good fields to mark notes to myself--it was going to make post-production much faster and easier. I primarily used the Description field to mark which part of a take was usable.
I recently installed CS5 and opened up my CS4 project into it. To my dismay, none of the Description fields in 250+ takes were populated. In looking at the SMVP "clip info" files, I've noticed that they were all rewritten during the project conversion process--the "Description" fields are there, but OnLocation will not read them. Opening the original project in CS4 has the same effect--the Description field is blank.
How can I gain access to this crucial metadata? Without it, I'll add hours and hours of logging to my job, which is going to offset a deadline I was already sweating. If it can't be fixed, there is no way I can ever trust OnLocation again in my workflow.

I too, am having problems with meta data  generated in On Location.
My Panasonic AG DV-1000 is not supported under windows 7, so I drop into Win XP to acquire clips in On Location CS4.
I then switch to Win 7/64 and import the clip into CS 5 On Location. I then make notes in On Location CS5.
When I import the clip into Premier CS5, all the notes are gone, even though, if I re-open the on Location CS5 project, the notes are all there.
    Suggestions?
