Opening new tab when clicking link

Out of the blue, firefox suddenly started opening links from Google and Yahoo search engines in a new tab instead of going directly from the original tab. I've tried tapping the control and shift keys, restarting firefox, and restarting the computer (just to make sure); nothing works. Strangely enough, it's only these two having this problem, so I'm wondering if they've updated their own settings to force this.

Did you check the settings on the Google preferences page?
For the Google website you can set your preferences on the Google.com page via the gear icon at the top right. 
Click that button to open the menu list and select Search settings.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

To open a new Tab from a link press on the link and hold for a moment. You will get the choices, Open, Open in New Tab, Add to Reading List, and Copy. Choose, "Open in New Tab".

I just updated to Firefox 17.0.1 and now I can't click on a bookmark to open it or open new tab when clicking new tab button.

In FF 17.0.1 I have several bugs to mention. I am only able to open bookmarks by right clicking them and selecting Open In New Tab from the drop down menu. I am unable to open a new tab by clicking on the new tab button or by clicking open new tab from the FF drop down menu at top of browser. Also, none button work in FF, such as Home, Back, Forward, or refresh. This is so aggravating!!

After I posted this, I restarted with add ons disabled and it worked..deleted a cpl of addons for compatibility checking and that fixed it.

Can't open new tab by clicking + button or from File

I am unable to open new tab by clicking the + box or even from File - New Tab. It has been working perfectly but failed since last week. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the program but the trouble seems remaining unchanged.Is my Firefox affected by virus or something else? Please help! it is so inconvenient.

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:

Wont open new tab when I click on it

When I click on the new tab it will not open at all. Right clicking on the new tab icon wont work either. I can open a new tab when I click on a link in a web page though.

I uninstalled the Ask.com toolbar and the problem was resolved.

Whereas previously it was possible to open a new tab by clicking on the "plus" sign at the right of the last open tab, or by selecting "file" and "new tab", neither of these options work. New tabs will open for a new webpage, but a "blank" will not appear.

Finder Windows always open new windows when clicking subfolders

since i upgraded to 10.5.6, my finder windows only open new windows when I click on a subfolder. this is no matter what I do with the setting in preferences.
Also, my finder windows no longer display the side bars with folder icons.
I searched my library (and whole computer) for the finder preferences .plist file and can't find it. (was going to delete it and re-create it).
Any ideas here?

The default of Finder’s Find will not search that folder, but you can change the pulldown menu just beneath where it says Search, from Kind to System files by selecting Other from that menu and then scroll down the next window and check the box next to System files. You’ll then need to change the pulldown menu next to that to “include” instead of “don’t include.”
The next time you do a search using Find, that pulldown menu will have System files as an option, if you think you might want to search for something in your home folder.

With FF15 on Win7, when I click a Google Reader link (that open in a new tab when clicked, target="_blank" style), the new tab opens for a second, then closes.

The tab will not crash if I right-click, open in new tab, or middle click. Other sites with target="_blank" seem to be ok with left click (Google+ links for example). But Google Reader links seem to be completely broken.

Seems to be an adblock plus issue in my case. When I disable adblock it never happens. When I enable it this occurs on most links on google, twitter or reddit. Somehow seems them as pop ups I guess. Probably will have to fiddle with adblock plus.

Firefox 30.0 - Used to open PDF file in a new tab when clicked a link. Now new tab opens, does not show file, tab closes. How do I fix it?

I am using Firefox 30.0. I open a page that has links on it to see some PDF files. When I click on the link, Firefox use to open a new tab and display the PDF file. Now a new tab is opened, nothing gets displayed, and the new tab closes. What setting do I need to change in order to see the PDF file.

Is there some way to keep Safari from opening a new tab when clicking on a link?

When one clicks on a link on a page in Safari a new tab is opened. This is fine if the link is to a different site. However, it is annoying when navigating through the pages of a single site such as is required, for example, in on-line banking. Firefox seems to be smarter in this regard, opening a tew tab in the former case but not in the latter. Is there some way to keep Safari from opening a new tab each time?

Problem with opening new tabs, when I right-click on a link and open in new tab it doesn't automatically load up like firefox 3.6 always did. Is there anyway to fix this?

for example there's a link a friend sent me in my e-mail and I right-click on it, and select "Open in a new tab" it pops open like normal, except it does not load the page, I have to click the box and press enter to even get it to load it. In previous versions I have never had that problem, current version of Mozilla Firefox I am using is version 4, previous was 3.6 hope this helps figure this out.

Web search stays on single tab will not open new tab when new link is open

Up until yesterday when I did a web base search and clicked on a new site there was a new tab open to show the site. Now all the sites open in the same tab. How do i correct this problem?

Hi, I'm not sure about other search engines but if you're using Google: First do a search, then on the results page, top right-hand corner > Options (cog wheel) > Search settings > 'Where results open,' and tick/check 'Open each selected result in a new browser window.' That should now open results in a new tab.
Other options: You can click the mouse wheel, or hold down Ctrl when you click, or right click > Open Link In New Tab.
