Opening odt file in Word or WordPerfect

Hello everyone -
I am new to Star Office, and its products. I have the Star products on my home computer, and am working on an 8-page paper. I thought I'd send it by email to my work computer, to work on the paper during my lunch hour this week. My work computer has Microsoft software on it. Can I open the odt file in Microsoft Word or Corel Wordperfect? I have tried it, and there are so many formats I could use to open it (i.e. ASCII, Word, etc). However, with each format I've tried, all that is shown in the document is gobble-dee-gook and is unreadable.
Is the odt file not readable for other word processing software?
Thank you, in advance, for any help.
Denise

Hi there, Thanks for posting the question. I will try and explain and show you the options available.
ODT is an 'open' format (e.g. not locked down to one company owning the format), at the moment Word can not read or write this format, but DONT worry!
You have a couple of options here... On your works computer you could install "OpenOffice" this is a free of charge version of Star Office and has the same functionality.
If you need the document mega urgently and it is not confidential and you are not able to use OpenOffice in work let me know and if you send me the file privately I will open it and save it to a word format for you.
For future...
When you are creating a document on Star/Open Office save it as a .doc format!! This way you will be able to open it in word, save it and re-open it in StarOffice.
Hope this helps!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

I can't open the file in word because it is corrupt and cannot be opened, what can i do?

I had a Word .doc that became corrupted while SpellChecking an entire vintage book that had been OCRed. Crashed every time I opened it in Word. I was able to open, strip off the Word Header & Footer (invisible), spell check and save as a plain text file with TextWrangler - BBEdit's Baby Brother > http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/ - no Word-ish formatting, but the data was there in total.

  • Open Doc File with Word via Remoteapp

Server 2012 with RDS. We publish office to some client pc's that do not have office installed locally. Is it possible to associate office files like doc, xls and so on so that when the user clicks to open an office file, the file will use the published office
to open said files? I looked it the file associations of the published office apps on the server. Checked the boxes for doc and docx, updated the connection and tried to open a doc -> opened with wordpad and not the published word app. Is this possible?

    3. Please test by applying the .reg file you have created above to the Win7 workstation and then see if the RemoteApp file association works as desired.  If it works okay for you I will post more so that you will know what extensions
    to use.
    4. After you get the above working successfully, next work on customizing it for the specific user path to their workspace feed or other changes you would like to make.
    Thanks.

  • My computer opens PDF files in Word

My teachers send me a lot of downloads through Adobe PDFs and that's fine. Only problem is my computer constantly opens them in Word. I have even tried selecting "open with" Adobe, but it still won't work. If I'm on the webpage with the download when I right click the download I do not have the properties option. One time I saved the file to Word and then right clicked the file, selected open with, chose Adobe and it worked. It won't do that anymore. I always get error messages. The error is "there was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." No other students seem to have this issue.

Please tell us your OS and your version of Reader.

  • Office 2013 cannot open older files anymore (word and excel 1997-2003)!!!

on that machine in question open an elevated CMD prompt and run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    Report back any errors found

Hi Guys,For some reason 1 of our customers has one specific share (and folder in this share) that get all kind of big issues with the older file version from Microsoft word Microsoft Excel.
They cannot open, copy, send through mail as attachment etc. those kind of documents. First we thought it perhaps had something to do with the robocopy we did a month ago, but that seems to be to long ago (we can recover from the backup 1 day ago and those files works fine). We have already checked if word can open the files (and not get blocked withtin the potion of word) and that is default settings. We also checked recovering files back with and without the permissions from the file. Also this works both when we recover it.They now work on a vm with server 2012 R2 (hypervisor (hyper-v) is also server 2012 r2). They work with DFS, dedup and FSRM...

  • Apps that open .odt files and sync with dropbox?

Does anyone know of any (preferably free) apps that sync with dropbox and can open/edit/save open office files?
I currently have a free app that syncs with dropbox but has no formatting features, which I am finding frustrating.
    Thanks, Gemma.

You can't sync files with Dropbox in an automated way. But you can use the Share button to send edited files to the Dropbox app on iPad/iPhone which accomplishes the same thing. (Other PDF reader apps offer more automated solutions.)

  • Open .pdf file in Word & "Convert File" Box appears...Weird.

Using my MacBook Pro, I click on a PDF file to open in Microsoft Word & an angry box appears that says "Convert File."
In the box it says: Convert file from: then it lists various file types i.e., Text only, MS-DOS Text, Rich Text Format, HTML Document, Single File Web Page, Unicode Text and many more.
It is trying to open a PDF file in Microsoft Word.
I can't figure out how to change so it opens!!!
I made the fancy document myself in Microsoft Word and saved it in PDF format on the same computer.
I am a new Mac user....so if you tell me to go somewhere (well, not anywhere..on the computer!); please be specific and help me get there!
I've tried the right click trick, open with trick...no luck.  That's not even an option!
This kindergarten teacher THANKs YOU oh so much!

    I found this...But I don't understand it.   I downloaded the latest versions...still can't view the PDF.
Am I doing something wrong?  I don't want to edit it!  I just want to VIEW IT~!
    Overview
Adobe Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-ins before version 10.1.3 are incompatible with the Safari 5.1 browser that shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 and for 10.6. The Adobe Reader and Acrobat stand-alone applications are unaffected and Safari 5.1 renders PDF documents natively. However, the Adobe Reader and Acrobat browser plug-ins before 10.1.3 don't function as expected in LiveCycle and Acrobat workflows that require either plug-in to render PDF documents in Safari 5.1.
    To the top
    Affected customers
Any Adobe Reader, Acrobat, and LiveCycle customers who require the Adobe Reader or Acrobat plug-in to render PDF documents in a browser when only Safari 5.1 is present.
    To the top
    Workarounds
    Options include the following:
Continue to use Safari 5.0.x and Mac OS X 10.6.
Upgrade to Adobe Reader or Acrobat version 10.1.3 or later.
Save the PDF file from Safari to the computer, and then open it directly in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
Use desktop virtualization technology such as Citrix to allow applications to run in a controlled environment where the Safari browser isn't upgraded to version 5.1.
    To the top
Can customers use a different web browser like Chrome or Opera?
Acrobat Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-in are dependent on the WebKit WebPlugin API and capabilities that are unique to Safari. Other browsers like Chrome or Opera do not have the required functionality to run the plug-ins properly. As of the 10.1.3 release of Reader, Firefox running in 32-bit mode is now supported on Mac OS.
What is the impact on LiveCycle Workspace?
Since LiveCycle Workspace operates in the browser, PDF Forms in Workspace don't function in Safari 5.1 using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions earlier than 10.1.3.
What is the impact on Adobe Solutions Accelerators?
    Interactive Statements
In the primary use case for Interactive Statements, PDFs are delivered via email and can be opened with the stand-alone Adobe Reader or Acrobat. The secondary use case, where the statement is generated and displayed on a website, requires Adobe Reader or Acrobat to operate in-browser and doesn't function using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions before 10.1.3.
    Correspondence Management
Internal employees (the Case worker/Claims adjustor and the business user personas) require Adobe Reader and Acrobat to function in-browser and don't function with Safari 5.1 using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions before 10.1.3. External user use cases do not require that the Adobe Reader or Acrobat operate in-browser, so they aren't affected by the Safari 5.1 browser.
Managed Review & Approval (MRA) and Integrated Content Review (ICR)
Since the MRA and ICR solutions require Workspace, these customer use cases can't function in the Safari 5.1 browser using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions before 10.1.3.

  • Suddenly can't open pdf file in Word, get a conversion box message

This just started. Using Word 2002, when I try to open a pdf file all I get is a file conversion box for different systems and languages, none of which open the document. I tried going into the Properties in the file and selecting which program to open it in, but using neither Word or Adobe makes a difference.

To clarify, I am not using Word to open the pdf files. Those are in My Documents along with Word and Excel files.

  • Opening RTF Files to Word?

Im hoping i put this in the correct area.
Basically, my rtf files are opening to TextEdit, but i need to open them to Word. I was told there was a way to make Word the default for RTF files but I'm unsure how to do that. Any ideas?

Hi Barbie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You got the right area... no problem even if you didn't.
Simply find an rtf in the Finder, do a Get Info or CMD+i on it, look for open with..., selct word Word doesn't show, click the Change All button.:)

  • Opening PDF files as Word

How do I stop PDF files automatically opening as Word documents

I'm having the same issue. The only thing that I can see is
that when you publish an exe projector from CS3 it automatically
opens in Flash Player 9. Flash Player 9 seems to be the root of the
problem. When you publish an exe projector from Flash 8 (it gives
you the f in the blue circle icon) it automatically opens in Flash
Player 8. The fullscreen stays intact with Flash Player 8, but not
with Flash Player 9. Why doesn't this work anymore? I don't want to
have to open all my new interfaces in Flash 8 to publish. We could
    use an answer Flash Support.

  • I can't open pdf files in word?

I have tried to convert them and everything.  I have been trying for three hours.

    Hi Carol,
I'm sorry for the trouble! What happens when you are trying to convert your pdf's to word? Is there a specific error message? Is there a major delay?
    I'd really like to assist!
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

  • ODT file images not displaying correctly in Word 2013

When I open an ODT file in Word 2013, the images appear "grayed out". I must click on each to reset them to automatic color.  This only happens in mine, when I send the file to others, the images display fine. I am thinking it is some sort
of setting in word, but can't figure out what.

    Hi,
Does this happen to all ODT files or a certain one?
As an initial troubleshooting step, please try to open Word in safe mode and try again:
    Type winword.exe /safe in Run
dialog (Press Windows key + R)and hit Enter, to start Word in safe mode.
Office Safe Mode will help to determine if there is any add-ins caused the issue.
