Opening old documents

I have a new iMac 10.9.4 and had all of my stuff from my old computer transferred to the new one.  Actually, I've done this transferring several times, so I have old files on my present computer.  I would like to open some Appleworks 6 documents, but keep getting the message, "You can't open the application "AppleWorks 6" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  Isn't there some way that these documents can be opened?  Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi, Niel --
Wow!  Thanks for your swift reply!  I downloaded Libre Office and tried opening one of my AppleWorks 6 documents, and it worked like a charm!  I'm so glad to find a way to open these old files.  Thank you again.

I keep getting the message that I need to download the new update for ipages when opening old documents.  The latest update that I have download was done 11/24/13.  When I check for updates it shows that there are no new updates available.  I downloaded Maverick a few weeks back on to my iMac.  What is the issue

You have both your older iWork apps and the newer Maverick apps on your computer.
The new Maverick apps are in the Applications folder.
The older iWork apps are in the Applications/iWork folder.
Of the two, the older iWork apps are more useful so don't throw them out.
Check out about Pages 5, keeping the older Apps and how to manage updates here:

  • Opening Old Documents in Numbers 3.0

After updating to Mavericks and Numbers 3.0 I can't open Numbers documents that were saved to the computer previous to the update. I get an error that says it can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

    Hi Hans,
I can get a reference error here if the destination table does not have that range available while the source table does.
Are you sure your desination table has exactly the same structure and dimensions as your source table?
If it does, copy/paste via the Formula Editor should work. It works reliably here.
Also the formula in your latest post looks as if it might be corrupted-- lots of extra spaces (it seems).  Did your orginal formula have those?
To sort this out, suggest turning off 'Use header names as labels' in Preferences.
If you end up with a formula in a cell as just Text (as Ian describes that's what happens when you copy from Numbers 2) you can convert that text to a formula by double-clicking the cell, clicking just before the text so that the insertion point appears in front of it and typing =. That activates the Formula Editor with the formula in it, which you can accept by clicking the green checkmark or hitting return.

  • Open old documents with new Pages

Switched to Mavericks some time ago. Having problems opening my memoir documents that I wrote a some time ago. When I try and open it I get the following error message: "This document is too old. To open save it with Pages '09 first". How do I do this?

While there likely is a Pages support discussion
area, there is this Support section for Pages.
    •Mac Apps - Pages - Apple Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac-apps/pages/
•Pages for Mac - ASC  Discussions area:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/iwork/pages
You may be able to get actual support for iWorks + Pages if you have recent software or hardware purchases, or OS X upgrade experience requiring a later software installation...
    See Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/
Since Pages is considered part of iWork, that may be another
angle should you need to search for other information.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Everytime I start Pages it opens old documents

When I start Pages, older documents are opened automatically.  I have unchecked "Restore Windows when Quitting and re-opening apps" and yet, everytime I open windows, it opens the last couple things I've been working on.  How can I stop this?

    Hi Jerrold
    I'm a bit puzzled.
Not only here it behave as I described but this behavior was also described in several threads in which some users were ranting against some Lion's features.
For what I get here, it may be a localization problem because when I tried to apply one of the tools listed by Peggy : Lion Tweaks, I correctly got the property NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows in the preferences files
but it changes nothing to the apps behavior.

  • How to open old documents in new update

My school district updated my laptop and now I can't open any of my documents in pages or numbers

    Dan,
Can you provide any details regardiong the version you had before?  Do you get any messages?  I am guessing that if you simply cannot open the files you previously had iWork '08 and have now jumped to the latest iWork.  To be able to open the iWork '08 files you will have to use iWork '09.
You can get a copy from Amazon.  Your IT person may be able to help as well.

  • I downloaded the new Pages and Numbers through my app store but when I open my old documents, it still tells me my 30 day trial is over. How do I get the computer to automatically recognize the new applications?

More information: I have a 3 year old MacBook and had been using "Microsoft for Mac" until last week when I took my MacBook in for some upgrades- including the operating system Lion. I have been unable to use the Word, Excel, etc. programs because they are not supported on the new operating system... and I already used my 30 day trial of iWork when we first purchased the computer. I decided to buy Pages and Numbers through the App Store icon. When I open the Pages and Numbers under my Applications, I can get them to work. However, when I open old documents saved on my computer, they go into the 'old' iWork messages of that my trial has expired. How do I get the computer to automatically recognize that I've purchased Pages and Numbers?

You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

Pages 5.2 opens all kinds of other document formats (even old .doc  Versions), but cannot open Pages 08 etc. of its own kind?
I have to use NeoOffice to open my documents of many years of work.
Is there an option to organize a corporate complain to Apple to be heard?

We have been doing nothing but for 10 months.
    Here is the response:

  • Will Pages under Lion be able to open old AppleWorks documents in the way that it does under Snow Leopard?

I've just read a thread  that suggested that Pages will be able to open AppleWorks documents under Lion,  is this correct?
I understood from discussions last month that one had to convert all  old AppleWorks documents to Pages or Word or some other format BEFORE upgrading to Lion as Pages would not be able to read them afterwards.
I wanted to pass on a tip that if you have used the AppleWorks password protect on your files, you will not be able to open them in Pages, so you need to open them in AppleWorks first, and take the password off, or save them as a file which is not protected, or some similar work around.

The Apple Support Community (us) just calmed me right down!  Hi everyone.  I just down loaded Lion through the Apple Apps Store and blindly went ahead and installed it, putting my mental well being in Apple's hands, having trusted Apple since my first Apple II (1974?).  But ... "What do you mean, Appleworks isn't supported?"  In a bit of a panic, wondering what was to happen to my vast (really) stock of AW documents I came to Apple Support for help.  Thanks to the input from Sue, Cornelius, Jonanna and others I took the leap and, clicking on the "OpenApple"-I, accessed the "Open With" switching the AW document to open with Pages. In a word, perfect. And, it looks like Lion has already told itself to open all AW (remember Claris?) documents with Pages.   CM
( Except I just spotted a thread titled "AppleWorks doc won't open in Pages" ... Going there next. )

  • Can't open a document I created an hour before with Pages 5.0.1; get message saying my Pages is too old, for me to download 5.0.1

Can't open a document I created an hour before with Pages 5.0.1; get message saying my Pages is too old, for me to download 5.0.1

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • I just upgraded to the latest software for my pages.  When I opened an old document it stripped out all the images I had in my tables.  How do I get them back

I just upgraded to the latest software for my pages.  When I opened an old document it stripped out all the images I had in my tables.  How do I get them back

    Don't save. Close the documents.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages 5 will damage/alter older files, something Apple didn't tell its users.
Pages 5 is a severely stripped down version with over 90+ features removed.
We recommend trashing/archiving Pages 5 after Exporting any files you may have saved back to Pages '09.
Also rate/review Pages 5 in the App store.

I upgraded to Mountain lion. I could not open any of my word documents so i downloaded Libre Office. It is downloaded but how do I get it to work with my old documents??

I don't know what file formats LibreOffice supports, but my guess is it can only handle the OpenXML format (new Office docs).
You could use this online converter: http://www.zamzar.com/convert/doc-to-docx/
