Opening old iworks documents???

I've just purchased new Apple w/Leopard OS. I cannot open Appleworks documents I created w/my old Apple, running OS 9.2 and Apple Works 5.0.4. I have installed iworks 08 on my new computer but still cannot open. Does anyone know what I need to do to open these old documents in my old computer?

You don't say, & your discussions profile is blank, but I'm assuming your new Mac is an Intel Mac. AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 (the last version) are the best choices for OS X on any Mac. There is an occasional problem with AppleWorks 6 opening AppleWorks 5 files, but it is easily overcome. See this user tip for more info.
If there is any chance that you have any ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files that have not been updated to AppleWorks 5, you'll want to get AppleWorks 6.2.4 AppleWorks 6.2.9 can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, so a good choice would be AppleWorks 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest version stable in OS X. Avoid 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy! Hardcore Mac is selling AppleWorks 6.2.4 for a reasonable price. You also can sometimes find AppleWorks 6 on eBay, but it might be difficult to be sure it's no newer than 6.2.4 and has an OS X-aware installer. I can no longer find the AppleWorks 6.2.4 updater, so getting 6.2 (which has an OS X installer) isn't really a solution anymore.

  • Cannot open old Pages documents

Cannot open old Pages documents after installing Yosemite. "The required index.xml file is missing." What happened?

Are you sure you are opening the new iWork apps versions? They keep the old iWork version in case you want to use it again, so you might be opening the wrong version.
Open a Finder window and choose Applications in the sidebar. Then, look for the Pages, Numbers and Keynote icons with the new icon, and open them. You should be able to open your documents without any problem.
To prevent this issue again, drag their icons to the Dock, so you can access to them easily

  • OPEN OLD IWORK NUMBERS DOCUMENT

I used to have iwork 09 but I got rid of it. Today I tried to open a numbers document that was made 3-4 years ago. tI need to open it in  3.xxx but it said I had to save that old document in iwork 09 before my current version could open it. What can I do, without spending any money, to get this document opened?

    Several options:
    1) install from a DVD
    2) install from the purchased area of the app store
    3) restore from a Time Machine Backup
    4) purchase from amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=i Work+%2709

  • Can't open old Pages documents in new system

I bought a new MacBook Air with Maverick OS X 10.9.4, but now I can't open my old pages documents. What can I do?  My old MacBook was pre 2008 so everything is iworks 08

The new version of iWork can only open iWork '09 documents. I had more than a few documents that I had to first open and save using iWork '09 before the newest version could be used.

  • Lion OS - I cannot open old Word Documents

I have recently installed Lion OS. I can no longer open old versions of Word Documents (.doc) in Office 2011
I have tried to install the Service Packs 14.0 and 14.02 but I get the message that "essential software is missing." I have tried to run Software Update, but "all my software is up to date". I have also tried to re-install Microsoft AutoUpdate (successfully). But still no joy....
    What do I do?

Pages 5 will not open Pages '08 files or earlier.
Pages '08/'09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder. Use that.

  • Will Pages under Lion be able to open old AppleWorks documents in the way that it does under Snow Leopard?

I've just read a thread  that suggested that Pages will be able to open AppleWorks documents under Lion,  is this correct?
I understood from discussions last month that one had to convert all  old AppleWorks documents to Pages or Word or some other format BEFORE upgrading to Lion as Pages would not be able to read them afterwards.
I wanted to pass on a tip that if you have used the AppleWorks password protect on your files, you will not be able to open them in Pages, so you need to open them in AppleWorks first, and take the password off, or save them as a file which is not protected, or some similar work around.

The Apple Support Community (us) just calmed me right down!  Hi everyone.  I just down loaded Lion through the Apple Apps Store and blindly went ahead and installed it, putting my mental well being in Apple's hands, having trusted Apple since my first Apple II (1974?).  But ... "What do you mean, Appleworks isn't supported?"  In a bit of a panic, wondering what was to happen to my vast (really) stock of AW documents I came to Apple Support for help.  Thanks to the input from Sue, Cornelius, Jonanna and others I took the leap and, clicking on the "OpenApple"-I, accessed the "Open With" switching the AW document to open with Pages. In a word, perfect. And, it looks like Lion has already told itself to open all AW (remember Claris?) documents with Pages.   CM
( Except I just spotted a thread titled "AppleWorks doc won't open in Pages" ... Going there next. )

  • Opening old Claris documents on new MacBook

    Hey Gang--
Lamar Mundane here. You all have been VERY helpful over the past few days as i get up to speed with the modern MAC age.
    My latest question:
I have old Clarisworks documents on my Performa 5200 (running OS 8.5).
I ALSO have numerous old AOL saved emails
How can I import either or both (or anything else for that matter) from my old computer to my new one.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
    Have a good evening.
    --Lamar Mundane

Sorry-peggy is on the appleworks-forum mentioned
    above!
You can connect your Performa via Ethernet to
transfer files to your Macbook. You will only need a
    straight-through Cat5-Ethernet cable.
You may look at the Carlson-document
You can connect only FROM Performa to Macbook if the
Performa is running OS beyond OS 8.6
For the Performa-side you may look at
    FileSharing OS 7.x
Post back if you need more info
    Rainer
    Hi Ranier--
Thanks for your info...sorry it's been a month since you answered.
You said I had to be running 8.6 to achieve a transfer.
I only run 8.5 on the Performa.
    Any thoughts?
    thx

  • I can't open old Word documents or save new ones. Help!

I'm not tech savvy at all and I really need Word for school. Please help if you can.
Whenever I'm trying to open an old file I get:
    "File is locked for editing.
    Locked by: another user
    Filename: "insert name"
You can open file in read only"
When I click "read only" I get:
"Word cannot open document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the filename might contain invalid characters."
When I try to save a new file I get:
"Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permission error on the destination volume."

  • Opening a Iwork document on my IPhone.

I must be missing a major component.  After I upload a document from my computer to the cloud where to I go on my Iphone to find the document that I just put into the cloud?

Excuse me, I do not understand what is your problem :
The initial question from you was "where to I go on my Iphone to find the document that I just put into the cloud?"
Now you say you open pages.app on your iPhone and the "document is in pages" .
What do you mean by "my choices do not include iwork" ?
iwork for iOS5 is pages, keynote, numbers combined - i.e. having all 3 purchased and installed on iOS5.
The concept is this : whatever you upload from Mac/PC to icloud.com/iwork goes instantly into the apps on your phone as well as to the cloud browser in Safari. If you have more then one iOS5 device and they use the same Apple-Id, the document will be in all devices simultanous synced. That's how icloud is designed to work.  But document sync is limited to only iOS. It wont sync to Mac, because iwork for Mac is not icloud-capable.
iOS does not allow to store files in a "documents" folder or else in its filesystem. All documents belong to only the app that is able to open it. So doc/docx/pages go into the pages.app while xls/xlsx/numbers go in the numbers.app and so on.

  • How open old Appleworks documents that appear as UNIX executable files?

A few of my old Appleworks or Clarisworks files won't open with Appleworks 6, but show up as a "UNIX executable file." I have tried adding the ".cwk" extension, repairing permissions using Disk Utility, and using Finder>File>Get info>Open to choose Apleworks 6 (it already was selected) as recommended by Peggy. With ".cwk" extension, I then get "that file appears to be damaged and cannot be opened."
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Cloyd G,
welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
The 'UNIX executable file' classification error appears to arise mostly from the lack of a suffix (.cwk) on the original file. If adding the .cwk suffix does not make the file readable by AppleWorks, and gives a 'file appears to be damaged' message, then it's likely that the file has indeed been damaged.
If it's a word processor file, you could try opening it in a Text editor (such as Text Edit, supplied with OS X, or Text Wrangler, available free from Bare Bones Software). You'll get a large amount of junk (file meta data and formatting codes, etc.) with the text of your document somewhere in the middle. If you know a single word that is in (or is likely to be in) the document, a search using command-F should take you directly there. Copy the text and paste it into a new AW document.
For spreadsheet files, you can try dragging the file and dropping it onto a new, empty spreadsheet document. The same technique may also work for database files. I've never tried or seen recommended the same texchnique for Draw or Paint files, but attemptng it should do no harm.
    Best of luck with this.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • How to open "old" Pages file on Version 5.2?

Can't open old Pages document on Ver 5.2; where is Pages '09?

If you had Pages '09 installed before the first installation of Pages v5, then the former was moved into /Applications/iWork '09 folder. Pages v5 does not support Pages '08, or RTF files, so you will need Pages '09 as an intermediary application. If you don't have Pages '09, or don't know someone who does, then Amazon still offers the iWork '09 application suite on DVD. If you go that route, you will need to apply the Apple iWork 9.3 update after installation.

  • Why can't I open a Numbers document saved to my MacBook Pro desktop?

I was trying to open an existing Numbers document saved to my desktop. It took me to the App Store, but I didn't have access to a Wireless network. If it needed an update, why does it require the update to open an existing/previously saved document?  Very frustrating and completely embarrassed in front of my audience!!!
