Opening old library in iPhoto 2.0

I am trying to switch between libraries in iPhoto 2.0. Per the help file, I renamed the old library in the finder, created a new library in iphoto and renamed it in the finder as well. The help file says to open iPhoto and use the "find" command to locate the old library and click open. I can not locate the "find" command in iPhoto 2.0. Help???

If I follow you correctly, when you started, you had only one iPhoto library. What other library were you trying to switch to? Since none existed, you created a second library, and when it opened, you were in your "other" library. After that, you renamed it, too, and when you restarted iPhoto again, that's where you would have been given the opportunity to switch to another library (again).
Now, the question remains... What are you trying to accomplish?

  • Cannot open aperture library in iPhoto

I recently opened an old iPhoto library in Aperture. This changed the file extension, and presumably the file structure. Libraries are supposed to be interchangeable between the two apps, but now I get the following message when I try to open the libary in iPhoto: "To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3 or later. Quit iPhoto and then open your library in Aperture to upgrade it." I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the database (and whatever the third option was when Aperture is launched with Command-Option). Any suggestions?

    Stephen,
the problem is probably an inconsistent DateModelVersion.plist file in the Aperture Library.
If the library cannot be repaired, try to restore this file from your backup, from a time when the library could be opened in iPhoto. If you have Code installed, you can try to edit the file manually.

Verify that you have iPhoto 9.4 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it."
    I don't own iPhoto 9.4.
What the heck do I do??
    -=-Joe

First if you look at the library in the Finder what is the full name including the extension?
    Aperture Library.aplibrary
Second if highlight the library in the finder, right click and select Show Package Contents.
In the Finder window that opens select the file Info.plist and delete it.
Now try opening Aperture on the library.
Okay, just tried that -- no help....

  • Insufficient disk space when opening Aperture library in iPhoto

I just created a fresh library with 3000 photos (6GB) in Aperture. I then tried to open that library using iPhoto by holding down the Option key on launch but got an alert: "Insufficient Disk Space: There is not enough free space on the disk that contains this library to upgrade it. It is estimated that you need at least 6GB of free space."
OK, I only have 4GB of free space on my HD. But why would iPhoto need to upgrade the library to begin with? I'm using the latest version of both Aperture (3.5.1) and iPhoto (9.5.1) and I thought they use the exact same library. And even if iPhoto needs to upgrade the library, why would it need an extra 6GB when the Aperture library is only 6GB? If opening the library in iPhoto results in increasing the library size from 6GB to 12GB, I'd rather not do it. Am I missing something?

iPhoto and Aperture are using the same library, but Aperture has preference settings, that prevent previews or faces from being created. If you open an Aperture library in iPhoto, the library size may increase, since iPhoto may be creating files, that Aperture did not create.  Probably iPhoto's estimated was too pessimistic, but opening an Aperture library can increase the library size.
But photograhis is right. You should not be running any applications at all, if you do not have at least 20GBof free disk space.

  • Cannot import old library into iPhoto '11

When trying to import a backup of my iPhoto '08 Library into iPhoto '11 it says the file is unreadable. Any suggestions?

you open iPhoto libraries - depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library to point to the old library you want to upgrade (you will no longer be able to use it with iPhoto '08) and iPhoto '11 will open and convert it
If iPhoto '11 will not see it then it is corrupt - try iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and see if it will rebuild it so it will work

  • How to import old library in iPhoto

I had and oler version of iPhoto.  Now when i try to open my old library it own't open form the newere version.

    What happens when you try?
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • Old Library New iphoto

I had my old iphoto library on an external hard drive (someone set that up for me and I'm not sure how he did it) I just got iLife '08. What's the best way to import my old Library into my new iphoto?
    Thanks!

    sokie83
Install iLife 08. When that's done make sure the external drive is connected. Then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the iPhoto Library Folder on the external. iPhoto will upgrade the library. That's it. There's no importing involved.

  • Can not open aperture. Get this message "to open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it." I have iPhoto 9.4.2. HELP

I have done all the necessary updates. Just very frustrated.

Someone else recently ran into a similar issue. If you're sure you've opened the library in the latest version of iPhoto, try the troubleshooting steps in that thread.
The fellow in that thread eventually fixed his library by grabbing his DataModelVersion.plist file from a backup of his library and putting it in his new library, but your milage may vary.

  • Can't open aperture library in iPhoto

When I try to open my Aperture library (v3.4.4) with iPhoto (v9.4.3), I get the following message and the application quits:
Aperture library needs to be upgraded.
To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3...
Both iPhoto and Aperture worked properly with a shared library prior to installing the 3.4.4 Aperture update in mid-April 2013. Upon first launch of Aperture after the update, there was a message stating that the library needed to be upgraded. The upgrade completed succesfully, and Aperture has been running properly.
To remedy the problem, I have tried the following:
    1) Repair Permissions of the Aperture library
    2) Repair Database of the library
    3) Rebuild Database of the library
    4) Opening the iPhoto library with the menu command <Open Library in iPhoto> in Aperture (Same notice to upgrade the library appears)
    My setup is:
    - Latest 27" iMac w/ 3.2GHz Core i5, 16GB RAM
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - Aperture v3.4.4
    - iPhoto v.9.4.3
    - Aperture library is stored in the local hard drive in the Pictures folder
    - iPhoto used to make print products only availble in iPhoto
I have searched the boards and have noticed people with similar symptoms but not the same circumstances.
Does anyone have a suggestion or solution?
    Thank you.

    Added:
Just in case you cannot find a backup of the Aperture Library that has been created with AP 3.4.4, make a current backup of your Aperture library and trash the file "DataModelVersion.plist". Then open your library in Aperture 3.4.4. Aperture creates a new version of this file, at least my experiments showed, that the file can be restored this way.

  • New MBP w/lion; upgraded to iLife11 but iPhoto won't open old library?

I bought a new macbook pro in september. After completing a vacation iMovie, I noticed the new MBP didn't have iDVD on it to burn to send discs to family. I purchased iLife11 for this program but it also updated iPhoto. Pretty cool until I tried to open iPhoto11 and it won't open the old version's library... why? More importantly, how do I get around it? I have a Time Capsule so a backup or two exist if necessary... just want to get this project done without killing the hole weekend! Thanks!

As usual... found the answer after I posted this. I updated the upgrade when I installed iLife11 yesterday. It worked but I still had the problem. I thought I would try it again today to see if there were any additional updates... and KAPOW... there was, and problem FIXED! Thanks!

  • How to import the old library of iPhoto in a new imac with aperture 3.4.4

Hi guys I'm a happy owner of a new 27-inch iMac. I previously had a G5 and I had my old iPhoto library on an external hard drive. Now I would like to import this Iphoto library in Aperture. I do not want to create duplicates and I would not want the photos to be saved on the internal hard disk but in my exterenal hard disk.
After importing the Iphoto library can I delete it from the external drive?
What procedure should I use to make this?
Thanks in advance for your help and answer!

After importing the Iphoto library can I delete it from the external drive?

In addition to Terence Devlin's advice just a few words of caution, since merging and upgrading libraries will be a major reconstruction of the libraries - better be safe than sorry:
Check your available free disk space. Merging libraries will need temporarily plenty of additional disk space, more than the size of the library that will be imported.
Before upgrading your iPhoto library, check, if your backup of the iPhoto Library is current. Don't merge the libraries without having a current backup of both libraries - your Aperture library and your iPhoto library.
Merging and upgrading libraries is safest, if both libraries do not have any inconsistencies and permission issues. Run the "Library First Aid Tools" on both to repair the database and to repair the permissions, before you do anything else. To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the key combination ⌥⌘, while double clicking the library in question.
After you imported the upgraded iPhoto library into your Aperture library, as Terence Devlin explained, check the result of your import carefully, if it is complete. There may be referenced images, that fail to import, or images synced from Photo Stream, Facebook, or something. Do not delete your old iPhoto Library, until you are sure, that every image has been transferred correctly and can be opened and edited.

  • I have iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5). After copying my photos to an EHD my photos disappeared from iPhoto. Now when I open that library in iPhoto I can't access it. HELP!!

Following directions I found on the discussion groups, I moved (thought I was copying) my iPhoto library to an icon on my desktop Time Machine Backups which appeared after I connected my EHD. Went back to iPhoto to then trash the photos I didn't want on my IHD to free up space. There were no pictures. I have followed additional directions for accessing my library by opening iPhoto while holding down the option key. It then prompts me to choose a folder, I chose iPhoto Library 2 (as I named it) but my  iPhoto was still empty.
My intention was to keep one calendar year of photos on iPhoto while archiving the rest on my EHD. Can I do that? And, more importantly, how do I get my photos back!!
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I moved (thought I was copying) my iPhoto library to an icon on my desktop Time Machine Backups
Do you mean that you moved your iPhoto Library package to the drive that housed your Time Machine backups? That is is the EHD you're referring to the one used for your Time Machine?
Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
How many EHDs do you have? What are they used for?  You should not use the EHD that houses your Time Machine backups for any other purposes.

  • I cannot open any library from iPhoto 11 (the menu for open is grey).

    Same for creating new library
In the root user everything works
Is there any startup application kwon to be not compatible with iPhone?
If I open cklicking a library everything works fine

Have you made sure you're holding down the Option key before you launch iPhoto and keep it down until the selction window appears.
Log into another user account on your Mac that's the same as the problem account and check to see if iPhoto will work OK there.  If it does go back to your account and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Open old library in aperture 3.5 fails

I upgraded to 3.5 on my mac mini, but now I can't open my existing libraries (from 3.2) :
it says the lib has to be converted,
that I have to reload aperture for that to happen,
that it will reload and convert my lib...
but then I just reloads my current 3.5 lib, and not the 3.2 one I tried to switch to, hopping it will be converted !!
I can open those libs on my macbook with Aperture 3.2
Aperture 3.5 on the mini won't open them, and fails to convert them (not sure it even tries)
There is no update available for the macbook, 3.2 is the most up-to-date version it can get (it's a pre-appstore install).
    So... What now ?

Quit Aperture and then locate the library you want to upgrade in the Finder. Double click the library. This will open Aperture which will ask you if you want to upgrade. Say yes.
It is  a good idea to have backups of the libraries before upgrading them. The procedure usually goes ok but you never know.

  • Accidentally opened Iphoto8 library in Iphoto 7... now all is bad

Ive stored my photos on an external drive and used it with my iphoto8 on my laptop. I recently bought a Mac Mini and decided to use that as my main Iphoto program. After connecting the drive to the Mac Mini, i tried to import the photos into what I thought was the latest version of Iphoto... but as it turend out it wasnt.
After the import.. i lost all my descriptions and event tags. Basically I have a library of photos based on date. But the WORST problem is.. all the photos are now low resolution! There are no high resolution versions of my 20,000 photos anymore!
So I then installed iPhoto8 on the Mac Mini and reimported the libary but its the same result. I also held down command+option and rebuildt the entire library ( i checked all the options) and after a hour.. still only low resolution.
Can someone please help me out! I had a backup of the library but i mistakenly imported that one into Iphoto7 as well when i was trying to figure out the problem.
    Thanks for any help!

    1 - iPhoto '08 is iPhoto 7.x.x (current version is 7.1.4)
2 - Is your library still intact on the external drive?
3 - *you do not import libraries* - you use them - you tell iPhoto where it's library is by launching it while the option (alt) key is depressed and use the select library option
4 - try connecting your EHD to your laptop and launch iPhoto with the option key depressed and point to the iPhoto library on it - hopefully it is ok
5 - now shut everything down and do the same from your mac mini
If each of these systems can use the library on your external drive then you are in good shape and you can delete the library out of the pictures folder on each (as long as you are sure there are no photos there that you want - I'm assuming that all of your photos are in the library on your EHD
