Opening older images
I am using Win 7, CS5, Bridge 4.1. I have many .jpg images from 5 to 10 years ago stored on an external USB drive. These are original unadulterated .jpgs straight from the camera. In the past I have worked on copies of them in PS 7. They pop up immediately in Irfanview Thumbnails, and will open in Irfanview. But when I try to view them in Bridge I just see place-holders, (blank boxes) with the file names, but no image. If I try to open them in Bridge it freezes and has to be shut down. I'd like to go back and work on some of these images in CS5. Any suggestions?
David
Yes, as I said they appeaerd in Irfanview Thumbnails, and opened in Irfanview. And it's not a drive problem because newer images on the disk, last year for instance, open normally. I've discovered another curious thing, if I copy an image to the C drive I can see it in Bridge, and open it in ACR, everything works normally. I suppose I could copy the whole thing, folders and sub folders, and then copy them back again.
Wait, wait, I just copied the image back to the USB drive, original folder, and guess what? Everything is normal, Bridge can see all the images. It'll have to go down as "just one of those things."
Thanks again for your response.

When I try to open an image by double clicking on it in Bridge, I get a message telling me to log in to Creative Cloud. I am running CS6, and the default should be to open files in Photoshop 6 or in Adobe Raw (if it's a Raw file). I don't want to log into CC since I am not a subscriber, and this means that I have to work around, and go back to Bridge, and tell it to open the file in Adobe RAW. However, this does not work for older psd files which for some reason cannot be opened in RAW. How do I return to the process of simply allowing RAW files to open automatically in Adobe RAW, and simply right clicking on the image in Bridge to bring up the option of opening it in Photoshop?

Does Time Machine handle open DMG images?
System config:
- MacBook Pro w/10.6.8
- Time Machine backing up to external Firewire-connected 1TB drive.
To help protect some sensitive files, I have an encrypted and password-protected disk image on my MacBook in which I keep various files (mostly Word documents) containing private information. The DMG is named private.dmg, and is normally mounted r/w on my desktop so I can access the files and folders stored in its volume as required. (I mount it manually after logging on). Throughout the day, I may create new files or edit existing files that are stored in the private volume, which in turn is contained within the private.dmg file.
Recently, I needed to go back in time and recover an earlier version of one of the confidential files. Time Machine couldn't find the file with the date that that I needed (3 days ago). It appears that the files in the private volume are not getting backed up reliably to my external drive hourly/daily/weekly as per the Time Machine regimen. I would have expected the private.dmg file to get backed up by TM if/when any changes have been made to the files stored in its contained volume, but that seems not to be the case. If I enter Time Machine and go back in time, I find old versions of the private.dmg file as expected, but if I mount an older version and examine the contents, I don't see corresponding old versions of the files within.
Are there known limitations with this configuration? I know that TM can have problems with dealing with some open files, notably the Entourage database file. Perhaps TM fails to handle an open dmg image? Since the dmg file is essentially open all day (having been mounted), is it plausible that TM never backs it up Is there any way that I can ensure that Time Machine properly backs up the sensitive files in the mounted volume?
Thanks.@ Kiraly,
Thanks, I'm aware of that. I have been pursuing my TM archives by directly accessing the file structure on the TM volume (within the Backups.backupdb folder), locating the .dmg file with appropriate date, mounting it, and then looking on the mounted volume for the file I need to recover. (that's a lot faster than restoring each private.dmg file from within the TM application.
It appears to me that TM is not properly saving the state of the open .dmg file when it does its hourly backup. Perhaps it doesn't see changes made to files within the volume. Perhaps it just wasn't designed to handle .dmg files that OS X has open for R/W access.
I should mention that my dmg volume is a sparse image. I wonder if that complexity is sufficient to mess up TM. -
RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop. Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop. How can I correct that?
Your question is a little unclear. In a "normal" Lightroom/Photoshop workflow the raw images do not open from Lightroom into Camera Raw. Lightroom has all of the Camera Raw functionality in the develop module. When you choose to open an image in Photoshop, and Lightroom and Photoshop are synchronized (i.e. referencing the same version of Camera Raw) then Camera Raw is simply used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments as the image is transferred to Photoshop. If Camera Raw is an older version then Lightroom offers you the choice to open the image or create a PSD or TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments. But in either case, opening in Camera Raw is not part of the workflow. It is possible to open the image as a smart object or convert the image to the smart object in Photoshop and then open it in Camera Raw. That is done from within Photoshop or is one of the open options in Lightroom. If you choose to go the smart object route the image first has to be opened in Photoshop and then from there you can open it in Camera Raw.

Photoshop CS4 won't open Raw image
Not sure what happened, but when I edit a raw image, and push open Photoshop opens but does
not open the image. I just updated to 11.01, and updated camera raw to 5.6
I reinstalled Photoshop, and the updates and the same thing happens.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
P1GuyOkay this could be a tough one.
I don't use bridge in my normal work flow, I use ACDSee v3 for viewing my photos and graphic designs.
I am a wildlife photographer and have over 300 gigs of photos dating back to 2007.
I just installed a 2 terrabyte HD, and copied these files to this hard drive so that I have two hard drives with these files on them in case of a HD failure.
I opened a file in Camera Raw, edited it, and choose open. Photoshop opened and the would not open the file, and more or less freezes with still some capabilities in the menu. It won't close if you try and exit, and I need to use task manager to close Photoshop.
I then opened bridge, and purged the cache on that file, reopened the same Raw file CR2, edited it in ACR and then opened it in Photoshope and it opened.
I opened and closed files in a lot of older files and it worked fine. Is there a way to purge all the files, or is this not a good thing to do?
I take photos almost on a daily basis, so going through each folder would be a huge task.

Suddenly can't open multiple image files in CS5
I recently transferred LR 5.3 and CS5 (12.04x64X) onto a new PC (OS Windows 7 64-bit). Both programs are working fine individually. And single images in LR open just fine for editing in CS5. But when I try to open multiple images (to merge as a panoramic) or open multiple images as separate layers, nothing happens. CS5 opens on top of LR, but the files themselves never open. No problems doing this a few days ago with my older computer (same programs, same operating system).
Any suggestions for fixing this would be much appreciated. When you say nothing is showing up, do you mean it is as if you didn’t use File / Open, or is it more that there is something but it is gray or white or black without any image detail? If the latter, perhaps something like a video driver update or system-level change has made things incompatible with how PSE11 tries to display images.
Have you rebooted?
Have you reset your preferences? You can do this by holding down Ctrl-Shift-Alt at the same time while PSE11 is starting up (or at least while the editor is starting up) and you’ll get a message about deleting the preferences file or not before you see the splash screen. Various other key combinations will ask for an additional plug-ins folder or a different scratch disk location. If you are going to delete your preferences file you might want to review the settings, first, in case there is something important you need to reconfigure once the preferences have been reset. -
Open second image pastes into first image - CS5
CS5- Each time I try to open an image when I already have an image open, the second image automatically pastes into the first image. Can anyone please tell me how to stop this behavior? If I use File>Open, it works properly but I open images by dragging and dropping into an open Photoshop window.Thanks.
Larry BermanThanks Chris but you're stating the obvious. In all past versions of Photoshop you could drag and drop images into a Photoshop workspace and cycle through them. The concept of dragging into an existing image is letting Photoshop read your mind. This is a feature that should be turned off or on with a check box in file handling, or a simple box allowing you to set the action to a legacy behavior. Or how about a message that appears the first time you do it with a choice, like converting to a color space flattens an image. I would have argued for this if I had still been a beta tester.
It's one thing to add a multitude of new features and another to change the default behavior of older features without giving the long time user an option to use legacy behavior.

Adobe Bridge CS3 not opening Photoshop Image Processor
I selected one, four, and multiple pictures in Bridge to reduce the file size of jpgs. I went to Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor. Nothing happened. Photoshop did not open. That got me to thinking that sometimes while I am in Photoshop Bridge won't open either. Any ideas on resolving issue of "Bridge not opening Photoshop Image Processor" would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Curt Y, Everything is checked in the "Startup Scripts," including Bridge (twice) and Photoshop (twice). Not sure why duplicate entries but there are.
If you mean that you have two of the same versions (both CS3) in there that indicates there is something wrong with your install
If you have any suggestions regarding being able to access the Image Processor to resize pictures and such without first opening Photoshop, I'd greatly appreciate it. If not, the work around will have to suffice.
My first goal would be to reset the preferences for both PS and Bridge and then try again
see also this KB document, section preferences reset:

And inhere also info on how to retrieve your path for cache to manual delete it. -
Lightroom won't open an image in Photoshop CS2
I have Photoshop 1.1 on a PC running Windows XP. I can't open a Lightroom image in Photoshop CS2 through the "photo" menu because the menu selection to open an image in Photoshop is dimmed. Also in "Preferences" in the "external editors" tab it says "Photoshop not found." My Photoshop is on the same drive as Lightroom. Am I wrong in assuming LR should open an image in CS2?
In a related matter I opened a Photoshop customer support case about this, but did not receive a reply. Is this typical of Adobe? Isn't this the kind of question they should answer even without a paid support plan?Richard,
What I did when faced with a similar situation was to go to Control Panel, and select Add or Remove Programs, then select Uninstall or Change for Adobe Photoshop CS2, then when prompted whether to Uninstall or Repair, choose Repair. This will fixup all the registry entries that appare to be missing from your system.
Works for me at least.

Can't open RAW images in Photoshop
I purchased a new computer. It runs 64 bits. I have CS4. Since uploading it to my computer, I can not open RAW images. I have downloaded the most recent updates.
I have been using the 32 bit photoshop because I could not get my NIK filters to work in 64 bit. But I can't open any of my RAW images. I can't open them in either 32 or 64 bit.
I have version 5.0.0.178 of Camera Raw. I only know this because I can see it under "About filer.... Camera Raw". I cant find any camera raw filters in adobe/plug-ins in either version of photoshop. I have a huge photoshoot tomorrow. I NEED to open RAW images. HELP!! Regular Support is down for the next few days.If you look at this list: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html
You will see you need Adobe Camera Raw 4.6 or later.
As Chris says, update either maually from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4681
Or use the Updater from PS help. -
Photoshop Elements 7 Editor crashes upon opening any image
I have been trying for 2 days to get my Photoshop to work.
I've used PSE7 for years, no issues. Suddenly yesterday, every time I try to open an image in the full editor, I get the "Photoshop has stopped working... check online for a solution or close the program" message.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling PSE7, rebooting, as well as plenty of other fixes I found on here. Nothing has worked.
I'm on Windows Vista 64 bit.
I tried to call Adobe customer support ALL DAY, since 9am. Between hours of hold time, being told I have to leave a call back number that never gets called back, and getting hung up on by the rudest customer service rep in the history of the world, I am at the end of my rope.
I'm a professional photographer and graphic designer, and I've now lost 2 full days of work time and cannot get a single answer on forums or help on the phone from Adobe. I'm seriously losing it.
Can someone please help me figure out what happened to the program I was perfectly and completely happy with for years so I can get some work done?
Thanks,

Opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9
When opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9 (File -> Open or File -> Open As), the Adobe Camera Raw dialog do not open.
Instead I get a window with a progress bar and the text "Reading Camera Raw Format".
The image then opens in the Photoshop Elements editor.
I have tested this with raw images both from Canon EOS 1000D and Samsung WB2000 cameras.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this issue.
I run Photoshop Elements on a HP netbook running Widows XP and with an Intel Atom N450 / 1.66 GHz processor, 2 GB ram and a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.Unfortunately you can't see the raw converter in PSE 9 on screens less than 800 px tall, which means not on netbooks. PSE will automatically convert it for you, but that dialog box and a few others, like the Advanced Downloader window, will not appear.

Photoshop CS5 64-bit crashes when opening an image; 32-bit works fine
This is a bit of a tricky problem, but if I start up Adobe Photoshop CS5 64-bit, it runs alright. But the second I choose an image and open it, I get "Photoshop has stopped working..." and Windows tries to find a solution.
However, the 32-bit version of PS CS5 works perfectly.
On my Mac Mini, however, which ONLY HAS Photoshop 64-bit (Creative Suite 5, Snow Leopard, latest updates), images open and edit fine.
On my PC, I also had this same exact problem with the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4.
I read in a few forums that it might be a corrupt font, etc., but I have no idea why a corrupt font would be affecting how Photoshop 64-bit opens an image, especially if I don't even get a chance to edit the image or anything. The images I've been trying to update are JPEGs.
I have all of the updates installed on my PC regarding CS5. It's completely updated. I am really stuck. I'd like to be able to take advantage of the 64-bit technology and put that version of Photoshop to use, but I can't.
Thanks in advance. I'm willing to try anything at this point. Here you go, copied straight from the event viewer console.

I did my best to recreate it to look the way it looks in the console, so nothing should be confusing.
Also, @Chris Cox- I do have the most recent beta driver installed for my onboard graphics card, which is an Nvidia GeForce 6150SE, maybe that could be causing it. I will uninstall it and install the most recent recommended release from Nvidia's site. -
Photoshop CS3 crashes when opening an image
When I open an image by double clicking on it when Photoshop CS3 is either open or closed, it crashes. If Photoshop is open and I attempt to open an image by going to "file" then "open" is still crashes. If I go to "file" then "new" a new doc will open. If I switch users on the same machine, images will open. I did an A&I and had the same issues. I also removed Photoshop and did a complete reinstall and am having the same problem. I verified and repaired the disk permissions. I also removed my printers and made my default Adobe PDF 8.0. I've installed a trial version of CS5 and images open fine. Nothing had changed since the last time I used it. Here's the crash log:

Starting an action by opening an image in Camera RAW
I am currently using Adobe CS3 Design Premium with Windows XP Pro as the operating system. The computer is a self build and has 2GB of RAM, 450GB of onboard HD storage and 6x500GB of external HD storage.
As a photographer I frequently end up with anything between a 100 and 300 RAW images after a days work and convert them to DNG, Tif and JPEG files.
With CS2 I ran an action which opened the image in Camera RAW which then enabled me to make adjustments before opening the image in Photoshop and completing the other elements of the action. Since upgrading to CS3 I have been unable to create a similar action and having read the "knowledge based" information and looked through the topics in the forum have failed to find anything that is of help. As each image and the conditions under which it has been taken differ it is quite important to make corrections in Camera RAW before completing the action in Photoshop and fixed settings applied by Camera RAW would be inappropriate.
It is always possible that I am making a fundamental error in writing the action but given my previous experience it seems unlikely. Incidentally I usually bring up the images in Bridge and then select the best images to process and start the action from Bridge.
I should be very grateful for any help in resolving this problem>It is always possible that I am making a fundamental error in writing the action but given my previous experience it seems unlikely. there's your problem...when you start the action recording from Photoshop you'll need to actually open a raw image FROM Photoshop not from Bridge. Don't know if this changed from CS2>CS3, but that's the only sure way of recording an open function...from within Photoshop. Then in the Batch you'll still need to override open so the open will open the image with the parameters already set in the image.
