Opening older Logic Sessions in Logic 8

With the constant stream of upgrades we seem to all have to pay for these days, I'm probably not the only one who has old logic sessions dating back to version 4, if not earlier!! So tell me this.... why the bloody **** do Apple want to make life so difficult!! I have to revisit an old mix down and I can't open it in Logic 8. Not only that but it tells to open it in Logic 7 (which I still have the install disks). v.7 is no longer on my MAC as I had to do a clean install thanks to some amazing firewire problems! But now I can't install v.7 on my MAC without installing over v.8!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone know how i can solve this inconvenience??
R

I've had the same problem.
It drives me batty why Logic 7 would have the ability to load older projects, but Logic 8 doesn't.
What possible reason would there be for removing this basic functionality from the program?
All previous versions of Logic have used a "converting song into ver. xx format" warning for situations like this. But I can't remember any previous version of Logic that was simply unable to load older projects. Shameful. And most un "pro".

  • Best way to open a Protools session in Logic 8

I am going to be mixing a set of 5 songs tracked in Nashville in Protools, not sure if it will be HD or LE yet. My question is what do I tell the engineer to export from Protools so that I can open each song in Logic 8 and see all the tracks and their regions perfectly so that all I have to do is start mixing.
Of course I have imported waves for each track but never an OMF session. Is it faster/ more efficient for the tracking engineer to export an OMF or for him to bounce each track to individual .wav that start on 1.1.1.1 . THanks

One more thing, I have found out the session will be recorded into PT HD. Can PT HD bounce off line like our fantastic LP 8. or do engineers have to sit back and watch the clock and get richer... ha
Actually, the consolidation process does happen "offline", it isn't a bounce per say, it just consolidating, or merging the sections of audio into one contiguous region, starting from bar 1.
So it does happen relatively quickly... you don't have to sit through a song in real time.
I can give specifics if you need them, but Ive yet to meet a PT engineer that didn't know the drill...

  • Importing Pro Tools Sessions to Logic Pro

I'm just getting my feet wet in Logic but was wondering if there is any good step by steps out there to help import and open Pro tools sessions into Logic.
    Thanks, Chris

This one always seemed to be an issue. As it's said in previous post, I bounce each track seperately, plus if i was mixing externally and want to keep some of the signl proccessing then you can record an effect, or just record a mix of that soloed track, then bounce it. Import audio into Logic, then quite useful is a function of 'strip the silence' which seemed to be working quite well dealing with precise cutting out all the silences to get rid of all the background noise. Obviously not an ideal way of file interchange, but there are ways to get you way aroud things.

The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

  • Wondering if possible to open Logic sessions in Soundtrack Pro?

Hi there - operating Logic Studio - wondering if it is possible to open Logic sessions in Soundtrack Pro like it is possible t open garageband sessions in Logic?

No not possible but you can send an audio file/region from Logic to STP for editing and back again.
STP does not support MIDI. Logic projects could contain MIDI regions and software instrument channel strips. This would not work!
Export your track from the logic project to audio files and import them into STP as a multi-track project.

  • Logic Crashes whenever I open a particular session.

Right, I've just come up against a bit of a wall. I was preparing a logic session to transfer to pro tools for a final mix, the audio interface that logic was working with was a digi003 rack. Stupidly without thinking I opened pro tools which of course took control of the 003 and caused logic to promptly crash.
The problem is that now the particular logic session I was working on won't open at all. Every time I try it just crashes. I have a back from last night but I've done about 8 hours worth of work since and really don't want to lose that.
    Any ideas?

try, doing doing one or all four of the following"
Remove all components from the component folder, before running logic
    disk permission repairs,
    get Disk Warrior run that
use an earlier version of the song,
occassionally, a song file gets corrupted, so you will have to use an earlier version,

  • Opening Logic 9 sessions in Logic 8/Express and vice versa

I'm working on a college assignment in Logic Pro 9 on my laptop. I need to be able to bring my work into to college and work on it there also. But the computers in college only have Logic 8 and Logic Express.
My Logic Pro 9 sessions wouldn't open in Logic 8 or Logic Express in college. What do I do?
I need to be able to save work in Logic 9 and work on it in Logic 8 in college and work on stuff in Logic 9 on my laptop that was saved in Logic 8.
    Any advice?

I can easily open my Logic Pro 9 sessions in Logic Express 8... no big problems. Only the lack of Spacedesigner/Delaydesigner. They will be greyed out and simply not work in LE.
Do you get an error or so?

  • Issues opening older sessions

    Hi
I have problems with logic not recognizing audio files from older (much older) then v6 sessions., in fact some of my audio files do not even look like audio, the info shows a UNIX file and it is black.
Some one just told me that it is possible that these files resided on a DOS formated hard drive in the past with the windows version of Logic or older version in general., whatever the case i need to open sessions and even after i tried using audacity to import these audio files as RAW and then create aiff files from them again logic still will not accept them., and since i heard this i looked at my 30GB of esx24 files and allot of them are also UNIX black icons and when i try to open them with the esx24 it just stalls for ages and this is own created sample library and will not load
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers

    Hi gilapuki,
Actually Logic 8 can open projects going back to Logic 5.
From page 140 of the Logic Pro 8 User Manual:
    "Opening Pre Version 8 Songs
You can open Logic Pro 5, Logic Pro 6, and Logic Pro 7 songs in Logic Pro 8. When
loading a song or project created in a pre-version 8 Logic variant, the format will be
converted to the version 8 format. A Save As dialog will open, allowing you to save the
project with a new name. The original version song will be retained."
And yes that is a mistake that they refer to Logic Pro 5 as the "Pro" was not added until Apple bought emagic and released Logic Pro 6.
If you try to open a song from an earlier version it will give you an error message telling you to open it in Logic 7 and save it so it will open in Logic 8.
    Cheers

  • Problem transferring Logic sessions

I have 2 Mac Pros with Logic 8 and 9 on both. One Mac is a 2008 model with the Harpertown processor and the other is the new Westmere model. When I create a Logic session in the Westmere setup and transfer that session to the older computer, Logic won't open. It quits each time. Everything created on the Harpertown runs fine and sessions created in the Harpertown open and run on the Westmere.
Does anyone have any idea why the Westmere created session won't open on the Harpertown computer?
    Thanks!

  • A way to upload and downed complete Logic sessions

Hi, if I wanted to transfer a whole Logic session to someone else using Logic I used to put it on my Idisk public.
He could download and open it. Simple.
Now Idisk disappears I'm trying to find another way to do the same.
When using dropbox I need to upload track by track (after having bounced everything), so that's not a solution.
Dropbox won't upload the Logic session as 1 item.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
    Many thanks.

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

  • Porting logic sessions between studios

    Hi,
I work with Logic Pro 7 at my home studio along with the studio at my workplace. I'm trying to figure out how to take session files back and forth between the two without having issues of missing audio instrument files, etc.
btw, both studios have the same software plug-ins (Kontakt 3, Vokator, Spectrasonics Atmosphere, etc.).
One issue I have is that when I "consolidate" a Logic project into one folder, it doesn't save 3rd party plugin settings in the folder (it only saves Logic-related plugs like EXS24).
Does anyone work in this type of situation?
Do you have any suggestions to make porting Logic sessions between two locations easier?
    -Michael

I believe the "Save as project" function is the best thing for that situation. Like you said, it won't automatically save 3rd party plugin settings, but you can always save a 3rd party plugin (in the plugin window), and then copy the file from (from user/library/app support/logic/plugin settings) into your project folder. It would be nice if "Save as Project" included that, but it's still pretty useful for consolidating elements of your project.

  • Opening a MIDI file in Logic - a problem

Is there a way to open a MIDI file in Logic without Logic automatically assigning instruments to each track?

    Donald:
First of all many thanks to you and other contributors to this thread.
Here's a summary of what I've learned so far:
When you open a MIDI file, all the data concerning meter and tempo are retained.
When you import a MIDI file data concerning meter and tempo are lost.
In the unlikely event that you don't care about retaining meter and tempo data, the simplest thing is to drag the MIDI file into the Arrange page of your template. If this method gave you the option of retaining meter and tempo data, it would accomplish just what we'd all like - - a simple way of moving a MIDI file into a Logic template... I suggest writing to Apple with this suggestion. You can do this by going to the feedback page of the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/logicpro.html
If you want to retain meter and tempo data then you can open the MIDI file while holding the option key down. (Thanks Donald!!)
This eliminates the loading of the EXS instruments Logic has decided are appropriate for your MIDI file.
However, when you go to the mixer page, you discover that you cannot create "software instrument" Channel Strips because they are grayed-out on the channel strip menu.
To fix this, you need to import the Mixer layer of the Logic template you've created for whatever virtual instrument plugins you intend to use. (In my case the multi channel Vienna Ensemble (VE) plugin and Kontakt. You do this by looking under the "import Environment" selection in the Options menu of the current environment.
You then import the Mixer level of the Environment of your Logic template. (This template should have a multichannel channel MIDI instruments wired to Audio Instruments.)
This will give you two mixer levels in the environment - - and the imported one will lack some important elements such as Output 1-2, Master, Click and PreListen.
To move these to new Mixer page select them all, hold down the option key and switch to new Mixer page. They will move to the new mixer page. Return to the now empty original Mixer page and use the "delete layer" command available under the flip menu on the upper left corner of the window.
Then you can reassign the tracks in the arrange page to the appropriate channels. (e.g VE 1 1, VE 1-2, etc.) However, the assignment menu does look a litle funky, since, in my experience, there are two VE 1-1s, VE1-2s etc.
The advantage of using multi-channel virtual instrument which works as both plugin and standalone is that you can create a pre-existing template with all your instruments loaded in it and save it. Thus if you were working with a VE Standalone as the playback device for Finale or Sibelius and you save it, you can, after instantiating VE as a software instrument in Logic, open it and it will have all your settings.
There are other alternatives - - you can open the Logic template you've made for working with multi-channel virtual instrument plugins and then - - without closing the template - - open the MIDI file. This will result in a dialog box asking if you want a new Environment or to copy the Environment of the file that is already open. If you do this you will get a result similar to what I've described above, but it will be a little weird in wholly different ways - - which you can clean up to a greater or lesser extent.
If only things were more simple: Ars Longa, Vita Brevis, I guess.
Again I suggest writing to Apple about this on their online feedback page. If enough people do this, things might be improved in this regard.
