Opening one particular desktop folder fails when it immediately closes

Hi. Working on a Macbook Pro from 2008, and I have one folder on my desktop that just today refuses to open. When I double click on it it flashes the window too briefly to see the contents, then the whole screen goes blue for a half-second, and the finder reappears. Restarting the finder or the whole computer doesn't help. I can copy the folder to another drive, but when I then try to open it on the other drive, the same thing happens. Haven't had a chance yet to try verifying the drive.

Welcome to Apple discussions.
If the finder is the problem, trashing the preference file (com.apple.finder.plist) and restarting will usually fix it.

P.S. If the folder is, somehow, corrupted, restoring it from an earlier TM (if you use it) version will also fix the issue.

Try this. Open one of your files. The window that contains your picture is named at the top. Command click on the name and you'll see the entire path starting with its name and then moving to the folder, the folder it is contained in, etc all the way to down to the hard drive volume name. This should tell you where to find the folder.

Have you tried: click Firefox button > New Tab > New Window '''''OR''''' CTRL+N '''''OR''''' File > New Window (if using the Menu Bar)
Once open, Firefox locks the Profile that is in use and you can not open another window with that Firefox version and Profile combination using the Windows Desktop icon or the Windows Programs list.

Skype is not ŕesponding when I open one particular...

I sent a picture to one of my contacts a few days ago and since that time I can read instant messages when I open a conversation with this person, nothing else. I can call,or send messages to others without any problems, but when I open the conversation with that one particular person, my Skype isn't responding at all and I have to end it using the Task Manager. Can you please help me? Can I delete that picture somehow,or what can I do?

Your old history is still saved in the main.db file in the renamed folder.
Open the Skype_old folder. Find now the folder named as your Skype name. You should see there the file with the name main.db (you may see just main but with the description Data Base file). Copy this file and paste it to the corresponding location in the new Skype folder.

"Open method of Workbooks class failed" when opening Excel file via Internet Explorer

(apologies, I posted this first to the general Office 2010 forum, but then realized this was probably a better spot to post)
We have an Excel COM add-in installed on users' PCs. This add-in responds to workbook open events by opening a particular XLA file (also deployed to the PC) to make certain features available. This process works flawlessly when Excel files are
opened locally - but when a user attempts to open an Excel file from an IE link, we get the following error: "Open method of Workbooks class failed". This is happening on the line that is trying to open the XLA file. This only happens
when launching an Excel link from IE - works fine in Chrome or Firefox.
I have found several posts on this topic, but no solutions:
1. This post (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/office/en-US/73c96005-84af-4648-b103-32b677205be3/open-method-of-workbooks-class-failed)
is the closest to our problem. In this case, the "answer" was that the user may not have access to the 2nd workbook being opened. But in our case, we're opening an XLA that is on the local machine, and I've confirmed that it is not
corrupt and accessible (read & write, just in case!) to Everyone.
2. This (very old) post (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/open-method-workbooks-fails-excel-hosted-ie-t965608.html)
seems similar, but is talking about opening Excel inside of IE. This is not what we're doing - the link is supposed to (and does) open Excel outside of IE. Interestingly, Excel.exe is being launched with the "-embedded" flag, even
though it isn't running in the IE window. When launching Excel by opening the file locally, Excel.exe is run with the "/dde" flag instead. Clearly the "-embedded" mode is what is causing the problem. I could change the
links on the web page to use some JavaScript to open Excel differently... unfortunately, the links are actually generated by SharePoint (the Excel files are in a SP repository), so this is not really an option.
3. This Microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268016) talks about problems opening an XLA directly from IE... but this is the case of a link pointing
directly to an XLA file, not opening a regular workbook that in turn opens an XLA, as is my case. In fact, this article specifically points out in the "More Information" section that "End users do not normally open XLAs; instead they open
an XLS that (if needed) loads one or more XLAs during startup." ==> precisely what I'm trying to do that is giving me the error!
I've replicated the situation with a very simple COM add-in (created in VS2010 using VB.Net) and a very simple XLA file (does nothing, just pops up a message in auto_open). For anyone wanting to try it out, here is the exact test case:
1. In Excel, create a simple XLA file containing only the following code, and save it in C:\TEMP\dummy.xla:

3. Build & publish this add-in and install it on the same machine as the XLA created in step 1.
4. Create and save an empty Excel workbook (I called mine WayneTest1.xlsx) - save it locally (on your desktop), and put a copy somewhere on your web server (I put mine directly in c:\inetpub).
5. Create an HTML file with a link to that workbook, saving it to the same web server location - here is mine:

6. Double click the workbook on your desktop (from step 4) - opens fine, I get the "workbook open" message, following by the "Auto Open fired" message.
7. In Internet Explorer, navigate to the HTML file specified in step 5 and click on the link - when prompted, select "Open" - I get the "workbook open" message, following by the error message "Open method of Workbooks class failed".
Here are a few things I've ruled out / tried so far:
- Unchecked all the "Protected View" settings in Excel, made no difference
- Unchecked all the "File block settings" in Excel, made no difference
- Made sure dummy.xla was open for read & write to Everyone
- Made sure the web page was in Trusted sites and set the security level to Low for those sites in IE
- Tried making the local desktop file (step 6) readonly, made no difference (i.e. launching it locally still worked fine)
- Tried using Excel 2013 - made no difference
Any ideas / suggestions?

I get the message "nothing to display" or "no region or audio file selected" After much research on the web, I believe this is a permanent bug. Does anyone have a good work-around for this type of work. We record live 16T band rehearsals constantly and would love to be able to break individual songs out of the large file and be able to use the sampler. Thanks in advance for your ideas! Cheers.

Another thing - if I copy one of the tracks to another track, then the sample editor works on the copied track. I don't want to have to copy 16 tracks to new tracks to be able to use the sample editor on a project. Thanks again.

DW CS3 crashes when opening one particular file

I'm using DW CS3 on Mac OSX. I have a huge website built in php. Today after making minor changes to a page, adding one recordset, DW crashes every time I try to open just that page. Everything else is working okay. Can that page be corrupt? Cause?

It also applies to multiples of 8192 bytes.
BTW, you should log into the Web forum and edit your last reply to remove your email address before the spambot email harvestors pick it up. You'll also want to be careful of that when replying by email.

I am not able to open one particular iMovie project - help!

I spent 18 hours editing a video, then closed imovie so that I can continue the next morning and wanted some memory management to happen. Now when I restart iMovie I can see the project in the list but open project button at the top is grayed out and double clicking puts the cursor on the name as if I want to rename it. Reading some other forums, I have tried deleted some files so that iMovie recalculates/adds those files to the iMovie project but that didnt help as well. I am still able to see the event in the bottom half of the screen with the rejected/chosen parts intact but cant load the project on the timeline.
Previously while loading I had chosen to copy the video files from original location to iMovie project and then move the original files to a USB drive and have confirmed that the mov files iMovie created for the project is there.

The individual file has become corrupted somehow.
Happens often to users who work across a network, opening or saving a Photoshop image file to a server.
You're going to have to resort to your backup.

Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work. It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

Can't Open One Particular Website

For some reason, I can't seem to open retailmenot.com on my macbook. I have tried it on chrome, safari, and firefox. And none of them could open the site. I have tried to empty my cache and browsing history, but to no avail. I have tried with anonymous proxy like anonymouse.org or Browser9.com, again gives me messages like can't find the page or it is unavailable.

I can open that site no problem with Safari 5.0.4
Since you can't access the site on any of your browsers, you might want to try restarting your router.
And try OpenDNS.
Open System Preferences - Network then select the Advanced tab then select the DNS tab.
On the left click +
Add these numbers exactly as you see them here.
208.67.222.222
Click + again.
Enter: 208.67.220.220
Click OK.
Restart your Mac. See if that makes a difference.

But with FIREFOX, i can open www.lifewave.com (main international website) but if i write my personal site extension /theartofalignment, i either go to a site called Association of Hawaii (same company, different personal extension???) or it does not open and send me above error message

Photoshop Action That Only Opens One File Type

I want to create an action that only opens one particular file type, performs some changes to it, then finds all the others of that file type. I can do everything else and use the Image Processor to run it, but I can't find any way to tell the action to only open .GIF files and ignore everything else. Am I just missing something obvious?

Another possibilty besides perhaps using a script, is if you have the latest photoshop cs6 version from the cloud, which allows conditional actions.
However, since i'm not on the creative cloud i don't know, but maybe someone else that does have the cloud version can comment.

Deleted Desktop Folder

I acciendentaly deleted the desktop folder and when i try to ge tit back in trash it is not like a core folder or something like that, it also does not have the small special folder icon. How could i get these back?

I have lost all desktop folders (on right of screen) - which also includes the Hard Drive icon.
Preferences folder is also not listed under Apple image on left.
I tried reinstalling 10.5.7. No help.
The start up folder has a ? on it!

In one case, when I opened a particular folder, the song was not listed, even tho' the song is there when using Windows Explorer. This happens with mp3 and mp4 and just wav files. Some audio are accepted, most are not. I get that codec is not installed error message, too.

Adding media directly to the media folder does not make it appear in the library. iTunes doesn't really 'look' at that folder except to go to specific files when you call upon them from a library. You have to drag new content to each user's library, that is assuming each user has their own library.
