Opening PDF files causes computer to lock up

Whenever I click on any PDF attachment or file, there appears a screen with a heading "ai.icns…" that seems to be trying to open the file and the cursor just goes round and round as though it is locked up.  I cannot close this screen and have to force the computer to quit. It is possible, however, to run other programs.  It's just that the screen I described will not quit.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

My guess is they don't care. Most likely they're illiterate and don't know what a colon is for. They probably think it's a little-used character. Remember: these are the people who don't know the difference between "deprecate" and "depreciate".
I have the same colon problem as you do. But it's not the biggest problem I have encountered in Lion. If it was only that I'd be Mr. Delighted with Lion. There's worse than having a colon - uh -  that won't cooperate. A lot worse, in Lion.

  • I was able to open pfd files before my computer was shut down by a power outage, once power was returned I am unable to open pdf files

I was able to open pdf files before I had a power outage in our area, once power was restored I can not open pdf files.

Chrome uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin.
    To change that see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html
However, Google seems determined that in the near future only their own plugins will be allowed on Chrome...

  • Cannot open pdf files with Firefox's built-in pdf viewer

This just started (I think) with Firefox 37.01. This is on Win7-X64. I cannot open pdf files with the Firefox built-in pdf viewer. If I click on the file or try to open it from within Firefox, it brings up a "opening filename.pdf" message. If I select the "Open with" radio button as 'Firefox (default),' it just keeps looping on this process; it never opens. In Tools => Options => Applications, Portable Document Format (PDF) is indicated as 'Preview in Firefox.' I've never had any other PDF viewer installed on this computer. I've tried disabling all plug-ins and extensions, but it still doesn't work. I searched for solutions but haven't found any for this specific issue.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hello,
Have you tried, to start Firefox in safemode you can do so by following these steps
'''If Firefox is open,''' you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
    * Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
'''If Firefox is not running,''' you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

  • Preview/QuickView of HP Scan Pro PDF Files Causes System Crash in 10.5.5

Ever since upgrading to 10.5.5 on my iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, I have been having problems with PDF files created by scanning documents using HP Scan Pro. Prior to 10.5.5, the PDFs from HP Scan Pro worked fine and behaved like any other PDF. Under 10.5.5, however, opening one in Preview or trying to view it in the Finder using QuickView causes the whole system to hang. Processor usage jumps to >100% and everything on the system becomes unresponsive. Every app causes a spinning beach ball, the Dock will not display, menus will not pull down, and I can't even call up the Force Quit dialog via the keyboard. There is nothing to be done but force-restart the system by holding down the power button.
Looking in the system.log, it seems that ATSServer is the process that is causing this problem. A dump of the relevent log entries is at the end of the message. The "Non-aligned pointer" and "Incorrect checksum" errors just continue forever until the point when I force a reboot.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have knowledge of what changed in ATSServer or PDF handling in 10.5.5 that could be causing this? What is unique about the PDF files created by HP Scan Pro?
    Thanks,
    Drew

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread that I started. I am glad to know it's not just me having these problems.
I have run through all the usual suggestions related to ATSServer problems and problematic fonts: I've cleared caches, checked all the fonts for broken ones, haven't installed any new ones since this problem began, etc., etc.
I've been able to make a few more observations about the problem in my case:
    1. I don't get any crashes while using the HP Scanjet software. I can successfully create a PDF file.
    2. The problem for me only exists on PDF files that I have had HP Scanjet do OCR on and save the text with the image in the PDF. If I scan to create an image-only PDF, it does not cause a problem.
    3. I have now noticed that the problem comes not only when trying to open problem PDFs using Preview or QuickLook, but it also happens when mdsworker, the Spotlight indexer, tries to access the file for indexing. The computer then hangs. I have now had to turn off Spotlight until I can eliminate all the problem PDFs. (The problem only happens with PDFs created since the upgrade to 10.5.5. Older PDFs created with HP Scanjet that were in the Spotlight index earlier do not cause problems.)
    4. These problem PDFs will open correctly in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader if Spotlight is off, but if Spotlight is on opening the file causes it to be indexed and the system hangs.
In Googling for solutions, I've found that people have sometimes been having problems with interaction between ATSServer and mdsworker since as far back as 10.2.x:

  • Please Help!  Can't open pdf files online.

Several days ago I attempted to update my Adobe Reader.  I'm using a MacBook with OS 10.9.3.  I have a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  After installing I received an error which says "internal error occurred"  After reading LOTS of websites, I finally used my Time Machine and reloaded the old adobe version.  It works to open pdf files on my computer, however, when I go to websites, it says that I have to accept the adobe legal agreement before the pdf is opened.  So many webpages are locked because I can't figure out where to accept these permissions.  Firefox will open these same web pages, but the screen is filled with distorted writing, all which basically curses adobe.  I believe your software has a virus and I wonder if you've found a fix.  Please help!

    Hello Pat,
Thank you for your reply, however, when I launch the older Adobe Reader application, it simply opens and does not ask for me to accept the agreement.  When I launch the newer Adobe Reader, I receive an internal error message and then the reader crashes.  I have attempted to re-load the new reader many times, I've deleted all of my old Adobe files including the files located under LIbrary/....  For many days I wasn't even able to open PDF files which are saved on my hard drive.  Using Apple's Time Machine, I was able to restore an older version of Adobe Reader which I can use to open files on my hard drive.  However, with the old reader and with the new reader, I still cannot open files on the internet - many web pages have items that I wish to open (spec sheets for example).  I have to send the links via email to myself and open them on another computer (extremely inefficient and time consuming).
I decided to try using Firefox and what I noticed is that when I try to weblinks that are PDF files, they open with distorted lines of text.  When you read the lines of text, there are broken sentences that say odd things (some profanity) that are directed at Adobe.  I won't repeat the lines here.  If someone from Adobe would please contact me directly (you should have my email information), I would greatly appreciate it.  It's obvious that there is a virus in your software.
I need help ASAP because my computer is my business computer and I'm really at a halt.  I need to have access to spec sheets which I can no longer open - or even download.  Buying a new computer to fix my Adobe Reader is not an option.
    Please help.

  • Cant open pdf files with 9700 bold

Hi guys I need help I had this phone with os 5 and was not allowing to open pdf files even online, I dd upgraded to os 6 and was able to open pdf I ve decided to go back to os 5 cause os 6 was taking to much space. Any 1 can advise which os 5 is good able to open pdf files online. I am currently downgraded to os 5.0.0.862 and I am happy with the space.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Natively, no BB OS can render a PDF file. None.
If the PDF remains as an email attachment (on a BB with a proper BIS service plan), then the attachment service renders the PDF...it matters not what OS level the BB is on.
If the PDF is not an email attachment, then you need a 3rd party app to render the file. With prior OS levels (prior to OS7, as I recall), the Desktop To Go Standard apps were included, but that did not include PDF ToGo...you had to pay for the Premium version to render PDFs. With OS7 (I think), the Premium version was included, so the PDF ToGo app was there, and was rendering the PDF document.
So, there is no OS level to recommend...as no OS levels, in and of themselves, can render a PDF.
    Good luck!

Hi.  I have a Dell PC running Windows 7 64 bit.  I have the latest version of Adobe Reader,  It worked yesterday.  Today I have job training to do that is due tomorrow morning and I can't open PDF files.  I have to open a guide and read it and take a test tomorrow.  I have deleted and reinstalled the application.  I have rebooted.  I have made sure my PDF's are associated with the program.  Every PDF on my computer won't open and I get the same error message.  It simply says Attempt to access invalid address.  How can I fix this?  Thanks.

    Hi Don,
I have seen this issue fixed for some users by modifying the following registry key:
The key is "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" MoveImages
Set the key to 1 instead of 0 then reboot the machine.
In case you still face the issue try the following registry key change:
The only thing you have to do is rename the following key at the REGEDIT, and everything will be fine !!
    BEFORE:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe
    AFTER:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.old
Note: Please take a backup of the registry before attempting this change.
    Regards,
    Rave

  • I downloaded Adobe Reader and cannot open PDF files, can anyone tell me why? or what I need to do.

I am not able to open PDF files or documents.  Why?

Here is my assessment, Claudio.  I know you are revered among your peers and it's very obvious that you live on these forums.  You have undoubtedly helped a lot of people and you will be rewarded in your afterlife for your endeavors here but here's a reality check for both you and Pat:
What lesson did D.Call learn from you?  Likely the lesson was, don't post here or you'll be treated as an imbecile by some hotshot bitwhiz named Claudio Gonzalez.
Did you not see that D.Call said s/he was an inexperienced computer user… and was obviously asking for elementary level assistance?  You were blinded by your belief that your knowledge and expertise is being wasted on anyone who isn’t forthcoming to your expectations.  I merely pointed out that if you think it's such a waste of your time, why dwell?  You should have left Graffiti to work with D.Call and headed off to another thread.  Surely there were other posts requiring your extreme level of higher intelligence.
Think about this:  You don't like it when someone talks down to you as I have here, now do you?  No one does.  Right now as you read this my guess is you are fuming and likely trying to think of a way to smite me.  You can respond to this post in whatever tone or language you choose but I won't take offense.  I’ll be the bigger man… I promise I won't reply so you can have the last word.
When you respond, see if you can take it up a notch and maybe even admit you made a mistake with your corkscrew remark.  I don't think you would ever risk being so disrespectful to D.Call, and most certainly, not to me or anyone else if we were face-to-face.  If you worked in my company, you would be fired for disrespecting my customers.
By the way, do you and Pat have spell check ability?  If you do, you should use it.

  • Unable to open .pdf files after installation of 9.1.3

    Hiya. I'm using XP SP3 w/Firefox 3.5.3 and IE 8.
When I try to open a .pdf file from Firefox (and I assume IE, which I never touch with a 10 foot pole), Adobe Reader opens, but then a blank dialog box (with a graphic of a ? in a bubble) pops up and all I can do is click the "OK" button and it closes Reader completely.
I've restarted Firefox, rebooted my computer, no Adobe products were running when I did the installation, and no errors occured during the installation.
I can open .pdf files from my HDD just fine, only when I try to open them from a browser window does the problem occur.
    Help?

    That's all it does.
Like I said, I can open .pdf  files that I've saved to my HDD, but opening them from the web just does this.
