Opening pdf files on iMac ?

When trying to open PDF files on my Imac it shows error and when I check the file it is empty?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and check the box marked
Allow Plug-ins
Then click
Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

I'm using Mac OSX 10.9.2 and latest version of Adobe Reader on a Macbook Air. I've tried Preview, Pages, Mail, PDF Signer. All give the same error message.
Here's what the folks at PDF signer told me a couple of days ago:
That PDF document was created using Adobe LiveCycle Designer and contains
proprietary Adobe data (known as XFA forms) that is not part of the PDF
specifications. This PDF document will only open in Adobe products (Acrobat
and Reader), all other PDF viewers/editors are unable to open these kind of
documents (e.g. it won't open in the Mac's "Preview" application as well).
Unfortunately, Adobe uses this to promote their own products instead of
providing the information and tools for other PDF engines to use these
    documents.

That makes sense Dennis.  I did that but was unable to find Adobe Reader in my Applications folder.  Of note though is that after a restart, the problem seems to have gone away.  So, disaster averted.  Thanks for responding though.  It's nice to have help on this stuff.

  • Opening pdf files on websites to fill them in on the website

With my iMac I can open and fill in all pdf files from websites using OSX 10.6.5.  On my macbook pro using 10.7.5  or later safari will no longer open pdf files on websites and just gives you a blank black page.  I use these all the time on sites from the IRS or other taxing agencies and fill in the forms and save them or print them.  I have not upgraded my OS on my desktop because of this.  Why is this happening and how do I fix it if it can be fixed.  I talked to someone at applecare and they said the fuctionality was no longer in the operating system to do this and I can only download the pdf files.  That is not sufficient because these are fillable forms on their websites.  All businesses use this function and if apple really wants people to use their computers for business I would hope that their not so monumentally stupid as to write this out of the newer OS.  HELP

  • Setting preferences when opening pdf files in Safari

Safari opens pdf files using Preview in Safari, which is fine. However, I would like the pdf files to be auto sized to the window, and displayed with continuous mode off. These are my preferences if I use the Preview program. Instead, pdf files are always opened in continuous mode, and not autosized.
I can't seem to find a way to change the default settings for displaying pdf files in Safari. Any help?

I understand. Preview via Safari is new in OS X Tiger. Apple has a history of building improvements/new features with each rendition of OS X.

  • Failed to open pdf files

    Hi,
I guess since the latest os/safari upgrade, the application has failed to open pdf files on several occasions. It's one of those files that you have to download then I guess the safari or adobe reader opens it... The beach ball keeps spinning and safari has to be force quit. I have the latest safari and adobe reader.
    Can someone please help, thanks.

Why not let Safari/Preview handle your PDF files? Tiger offers this alternative. To do so, remove the Adobe Reader plug-in from your Internet Plug-in folder (may be in either your Main or User Library folder). When Safari encounters a PDF file, it will then automatically open the file in Safari using Previews PDF format.
Another alternative (which includes removing the Adobe plug-in) is to use PDF Browser Plug-in. This plug-in is freeware for private use.

  • Safari is closed when opening pdf. files

My IMac can’t open pdf.files when I try to open them from Safari. I have installed Adobe Reader, but I only get a black page and after 30 seconds the Internet connection is cancelled. I get the following message: “Safari was unexpected closed. The problem could be Updating Plugin-modul.”
(I can open pdf saved on my IMac.)

    Hi Mikael,
It sounds like the Adobe PDF plugin is acting up.
Remove this file to allow Safari to load the PDFs natively (it doesn't need a plugin to display PDFs):
    Hard drive > Library > Internet Plug-Ins > AdobePDFViewer.plugin
