Opening PDF in AI CS4 - cuases type kerning to be off.

I noticed that when I open some PDF files in AI CS4 some of the type kerning (Spaces between some letters) is not the same as the original PDF file.
I found another way of bringing PDF files into AI CS4 that holds the kerning.
Open a new AI file, place the PDF, go to the OBJECTS menu/FLATTEN TRANSPARENCY/ High Resolution (not necessary just my choice).
The file will now have editable text that does not have any kerning issues. The only draw back was all the clipping masks. I just selected them with the direct select tool (white arrow) and clicked the delete key twice.

> The only pdfs that should be opened, and edited, in Illustrator are pdfs saved from Illustrator itself...
and with Include Illustrator Editing Capability turned on when saved. These files are actually dual format, with the PDF and AI file data saved separately within the same file. You would be editing the AI portion of the file, not the PDF portion.

  • Opening pdf in Firefox

Ok...so my wife's a scrapbooker and opens alot of PDF's online via FireFox to view designs. Last night she clicks on a link to open a pdf and for some reason chose to save it rather than open it. And then she selected to "Do this automatically for files like this from now on". Well, that was a mistake. Now when we click on links to open pdf's (and other file types, I presume) it always prompts us to save the file and does not give us the chance to open it. How in the world do I go back to opening rather than saving? I've used Finder, found a local pdf file, set things up to always use Adobe Reader to open pdf files but that doesn't do the trick.
    HELP! PLEASE!
    Thanks!
    Jim

Here's the answer, provided by a teacher friend that works with my wife:
Make sure you have closed Firefox
Go to Hard drive click on the house that has your name by it
    Click on Library
    Click on Application Support
    Click on Firefox folder
    Click on profiles folder
    Click on iiosuk5g.default folder
    Find the mimeType.rdf file
Drag it to the trash (It regenerates itself when you
    relaunch Firefox)
    Relaunch Firefox
    It should now be reset.

  • Can't open PDF files with IE10.

I cannot open PDF files with IE10. I had other issues, as well, with IE10 so I went back to IE9. Then it was suggested that not updating to the latest edition of IE could lead to security issues and sure enough my computer was hacked shortly thereafter. Now I am back with IE10. How do I change the registry to be able to open PDF files?

Please try turning Enhanced Protected Mode OFF in IE10 and see if it makes a difference.   Navigate to Internet Options, select the Advanced Tab, scroll down to the Security section, and uncheck the box that says "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode".

  • Why can I not open PDF-files in InDesign CS4?

    Hi,
Well then, as I wrote in the headline... Why can I not open PDF-files?
I get a notification that says that either the file is already open (which it's not) or it is missing a plug-in thingy for this kind of file.
So, how do I know which plug-in thing I should chose from Adobe which will solve my problem?
Could it be enough just to update the program? I tried with 6.0.6. upgrade but it wouldn't even open up. I'm not so good at this type of computerproblems (choosing upgrades, plug-in etc.). The program is not upgraded for a long time, unless it do it automatically, but I think we've chosen it not to....
    Please help!

  • Photoshop CS4 Freezes when opening PDFs

When I drag two, 2-page PDFs onto Photoshop CS4 to open them, PS opens one page of one PDF and then freezes. I can replicate this every time I try.
Once PS freezes it takes a little patience to get it to force quit.
    Any advice?

Not to dig up the past, but I've been having this problem since a couple of months ago, and I have an idea about what might be causing the bug. It IS a bug.
My workflow involves taking hundreds of PSD and PDF files for product packaging and converting them to 3D and 2D product shots. We have to supply retailers with high-res JPGs of our distributed products. Most of the original files have crop marks, color bars, etc.
In the past, all I had to do was drag my files, whatever they were, to the dock. I would typically work in batches, pulling up 10 or so files at once, cropping them, and then running an action, depending on the general format. Pretty much every layout is a different size, or using a different template, or what have you, so using an action to do the actual cropping is completely out of the question. Cropping in Acrobat is horribly implemented, so that's out of the question.
One day I started doing some image processing as normal, and photoshop opened the first PDF, rasterized it, and then became completely unresponsive. Well, let me specifically qualify that. It lets me continue using any application other than photoshop, and it will let me click on the menus, which will drop down from the menu bar, but you can't select any commands at all. They aren't grayed out, they just don't respond. The behavior is exactly what you would get if you had a dialog box open, but there isn't an open dialog box. There SHOULD be (for the next PDF), but it isn't there.
You can't "quit" or close that first PDF or anything. Some commands will try to function (scripts) but fail and say "Sorry, something major happened, and I can't continue" (yes, that's really the error message).
OS X doesn't think that PS is locked up. PS doesn't think it is locked up, but it won't do anything at all. It only happens with multiple PDFs being dragged to the dock or opened through "file/open." In fact, if you select 30 PSD files, 10 JPGs, 5 EPS files, 1 PDF and 10 Illustrator files, it will work just fine. 2 PDFs? locks up.
I've found one way to get around this bug, and it might work for those of you with this problem. Use the File/Scripts/Image Processor tool to rasterize your PDFs to PSD files as an intermediate step, and then you can open them in Photoshop. If you need something other than pg 1 of a multipage document, you'll have to edit in acrobat first to get rid of unwanted leading pages.
That's been my work-around for a few months.
I just recently moved from my Mac Pro to a new MacBook Pro. I did a clean install, and then ran migration assistant to move my stuff over to a new account.
Everything went well, but the photoshop bug appeared to follow me to a new machine. I was very frustrated.
Then I realized what had changed around the time of this bug originally showing up: I'd added a second monitor!
So, thinking I'd figured out the bug and how to get around it for real, I just disconnected my external monitor and force-quit Photoshop. Opened it back up, and the bug is still there in force, even with one display active.
    Here's my info, to clarify:
    Original machine with the bug:
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 ghz (4 core 2007 model)
    8GB RAM
    320 GB velociraptor (system drive)
    1.5TB RAID 0, 900 GB free (scratch)
    10.5.7-10.6.6 (bug never went away)
    2 NEC 20" LCDs
    CS5 Design Premium, fully updated
    New machine, also with bug:
    2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2.0ghz 4 core
    8 GB RAM
120GB SATA6 SSD (system drive, primary scratch), 70 GB free
500 GB stock HDD (in the optical bay, storage drive, secondary scratch), 250 GB free
    10.6.7
    1 NEC 20" LCD + built-in hi-res display

  • Illustrator CS4 stürzt beim öffnen einer PDF ab / Illustrator CS4 crashes while opening a PDF

    Hallo liebe Community,

    in english:
    Dear community ,
unfortunately the phone support can not help me (product is too old ), so now you are my last chance !
    Now to my problem :
I have been using for several years Adobe Illustrator CS4 to edit PDF files .
Recently I had to install "FontExplorerX " and since this moment I have the phenomenon that I cannot open PDF files with Illustrator.
The illustrator starts normally and I can work normally with other file formats, but when I try to open a PDF file the program freezes and I can not do anything. The creation PDF files works normally.
Of course, I uninstalled the "FontExplorer", but the problem remained .
Also, a reinstallation of Illustrator, including deleting the preferences did not help.
The knowledge-base says that you can delete the default settings of Illustrator, which I also tried, unfortunately without success.
Now I do not know what else I can try. Maybe someone has an idea what else you could try?
Here is some information about the system :
    - Win7 x64
    - Adobe CS4 Design Standard
    - Illustrator CS4 version 14.0.0
Thanks in advance for suggestions and tips!

I repaired permissions using my computer disk utility AND from my install DVD. Still not working! I also did a PRAM, that I read about on the internet...

  • Using Maverick, error message: Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Receiving error message using current Maverick version: "Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).".  Is fix the same as on previous OS versions?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Fireworks CS4: could not open the file. Unknown file type

Hello, this is the second file created with Fireworks CS4 that can't be opened. I'm using the same Fireworks installation that created the file. The file is a 1.2 MB file containing the pages of a draft for a new website.
When I click on the file in Windows Explorer to open it, Fireworks tries to open it, but it can't. Instead, an alert pops up with this message: "Adobe Fireworks CS4 Could not open the file. Unknown file type"
Working with Windows Vista Business, Adobe Web Premium CS4 suite
I already tried opening the file, to no avail, with:
-another computer with Windows XP Pro SP3 and the same Fireworks version
-another computer with Windows XP Pro SP3 and Fireworks CS3
-another computer with Windows XP Pro SP3 and Fireworks MX 2004
    Please help.

I tried to find a solution for you by using:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=error%20opening%20file&cat=su pport&product=fireworks
but I couldn't find anything.  You may want to give it a go  :-)
Can you open the file in another program, maybe an earlier version of FWs, or Photoshop or even Illustrator if you have it?
Not sure if there's a configuration folder that needs to be renamed and when FWs restarts it re-writes the config file... that's something to has to be done with DW when 'funny stuff' happens.
    That's the best advice I have, I'm sorry  :-(

  • How to edit a PDF in Photoshop CS4

    Hi there,
I'm having some real trouble trying to figure out how to edit a PDF in photoshop cs4. So i need to edit/change text, move things around, that type of thing.
    I work in Windows.
Could someone give me a bit a low down on how this is done?
    Much appreciated,
    Victoria

You can open them but you will totally rasterize everything.
PDFs are not intended to be edited. They are a final format but as
mentioned you can use Acrobat for some minor text edits or use it to
extract the images to Photoshop for further editing.

  • Opening PDF in Illy...

    Hello,
This is something that has bugged me for some time. When clients give me PDF's asking me to change the text, I end up writing it all out again which is annoying. Is there a way of connecting all the text boxes up so I don't have to spend half my day writing T's & C's??
    Hope this makes sense,
    Cheers.
    Craig

What an awful workflow. Your clients should be sending you native files if they need changes made. PDFs are not meant for editing. Illustrator’s ability to open PDFs is a convenience and should not be seen as a viable way to edit and save the file. You should ask you clients to send the complete file, along with any links if they need you to make changes.
That said; you are at the mercy of the format. Since PDFs are not meant to be edited, text is not stored in the file in tidy logical blocks and columns. The format does not even support kerning, which is why you sometimes see a new text item formed within a line of text.
I believe if you search the forum you can find a script by James Talmidge (aka JET) that will help you. Try "script type combine" also try searching for terms specific to your problem, like "pdf text edit".
The only additional help I can offer is a rick I have used when backed into this corner. Select all the text objects in one block (e.g. one column) and copy. Create a new text frame by dragging out out with the Type tool. Paste. Now position the frame over the existing type and resize the column width to get the correct line breaks. You will still need to format the text to get the correct leading and paragraph spacing. Some minor tweaks in line breaks may still be necessary.

  • Windows Explorer can't be set to use Acrobat to open pdf

I have CS4 with x64 Windows. Because Acrobat 9 crashed at least every 10 minutes and it has downgraded features (for example, you can no longer replace a page in the Pages window by dragging a page from another document and dropping it onto the page number), I reinstalled 8. The only problem was that I had to start 8 before double-clicking in Windows Explorer to open a pdf file, or else Windows starts up 9. So, to take care of that, I uninstalled 9, but then the pdf printer disappeared. So, I did a repair install of 8. Now Explorer will NEVER open a pdf. When I do Open With, or when attempting to set the Open With in Folder Option / File Types, I select the 8 version of acrobat.exe but Explorer just ignors the selection, as if I had just cancelled out of the Browse... window. 8 works fine when I drag a file from Explorer and drop it into Acrobat. I'm sure there's a fix lurking here somewhere. Thanks in advance and Help!

I would suggest uninstalling Acrobat 8 and then reinstalling Acrobat 8.  Hopefully this would set your file associations correctly.  Good Luck!

    Hi adityabhargava01-
My first suggestion is to upgrade to the most recent version of Firefox by going to this link:
    http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
My second suggestion is to read this article on how to many your preferences on how Firefox deals with PDFs and all other file types:
    [[Options window - Applications panel]]
    I hope that helps!

I can no longer open pdf files when clicking on a link such as: shown in troubleshooting info.
It used to work on earlier version when I had XP, now I'm Win7Pro and using version 5.0.1 The links work fine with Internet Explorer. Help, please.

Type in '''about:plugins''' into the location bar and press "Enter", at the the top is a line for plug-ins test pointing to [http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ mozilla.com/plugincheck/]
You should have Version: 10.1.0.534 for adobe acrobat but you have two older versions instead. If the one does not replace both you may have to disable the really old one, or remove through the control panel.
