Opening Photoshop documents in Finder

hello everyone -- just having a small problem opening image files from the finder in Mac OSX (10.4.6). When I have the hard drive pane open in finder and when to open a jpeg, gif, or photoshop file that are all set to open with photoshop -- the photoshop program will run, however the file I initially double clicked on in finder will not appear once photoshop has started up. It seems as though finder knows to open photoshop when trying to open an image file, but fails to open the image itself when photoshop finishes initilizing. If anyone out there is having a similar problem and could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Background information
If you use the Archive and Install method to upgrade to Panther or Tiger after installing Photoshop in a previous version of Mac OS X, the system doesn't copy the Adobe Unit Types file to the ScriptingAdditions folder. Reinstalling Photoshop restores the Adobe Unit Types file, which enables you to open files in Photoshop.
Do one of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Copy the Adobe Unit Types file to Library/ScriptingAdditions.
Copy the Adobe Unit Types file in the Previous System folder to [hard disk] /Library/ScriptingAdditions.
Solution 2: Create a new ScriptingAdditions folder, and then reinstall Photoshop.
1. Create a new folder in [hard disk] /Library and name it ScriptingAdditions.
2. Remove and reinstall Photoshop.

  • Cannot open Photoshop documents FreeHand?

    Just reinstalled Leopard.
I can no longer open Photoshop (PS) Documents with Freehand 10 or MX Freehand. All I get is a black box or a string of incoherent colors etc.
I use Freehand for creating objects which is harder to do in PS. Likewise I export Freehaqnd items to Photoshop for distribution to my publisher. Everything was working very nicely until after I reinstalled the OS X system.
What do I need to do to restore things to proper working order????

Check to see if you've made a change to your Photoshop preferences. You'll need to save with preview on, no compression.
    What do you mean?
I restored the com.adobe.Photoshop.plist preferences and the com.macromedia.freehand.10.plist using the Mac Time Machine. I used copies from a date when Freehand would open Photoshop documents.
Freehand now opens some small PSDs that are not too large and that were primarily created in Freehand and then saved in Photoshop. Also these files were created while the import function was working.
Freehand crashes when I drag a PSD over the Dock Icon. Freehand also crashes when 50mb PSD files are attempted.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • I can't open word documents from Finder

I can't open word documents from Finder

If you mean "I can't double click a *doc file and make word open" then you highlight the file and do a command-I (or get info).  When the window comes up, change the "open with" parameter.  You can also right click and select "other"

  • "...not a valid Photoshop document" error when opening Mac cc file on PC

I get a "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document." error message whenever I try to open up a PSD file created on a Mac using Photoshop CC on my PC using CC. Other people have been able to open the file from the same location, so the files aren't corrupted. Anyone know how to fix this?

I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to share my experience and solution in case anyone else runs into this.
The other day, I spent many hours editing some photos for a client. I saved them all and closed Photoshop. When I tried to open the .PSDs, they all came up with this "Not a valid Photoshop document" error. I was freaking out. I could see the thunmbnails and previews with the MacOS Finder and could see the images just fine in Lightroom, but couldn't open them in Photoshop CC.
Finally, I remembered that these were NOT supposed to be .psd files! They were supposed to be TIFFs. What happened was, when I edited them from within Lightroom into Photoshop, they opened as TIFFs. However, when I did "save as", I wanted to name them similarly to some other files I had. I clicked on one of the existing files to copy the file name in the Save As dialog to make it easier to name the new file I was saving, but I didn't realize it was changing the file extention from ".tif" to ".psd" as well. The older MacOS (version 9 and earlier) didn't rely on file extensions fo identifying file types, so it didn't hit me right away that this would be the problem. When I changed the incorrect .psd file extension to .tiff, the files opened in Photoshop just fine.
SO... if you run into this "Not a valid Photoshop document" error, try figuring out if it's actually another file type (.jpg, .tif, .png, etc) by either getting the file info from another program or just experimenting with different file extensions. Chances are good that your file isn't actually corrupt, but just named improperly!

  • Photoshop CC 2014 Cannot open .psd file because it's not a "photoshop document"

    Right, straight to the case,
I was working on a very important file at work. I kept saving it at .psd (photoshop), then I also saved it as .esp and .pdf, just to be able to open then in AI.
Anyhow, after some saving, I had the .psd file ready and done so I closed it. Wen't to open it later to find out the it's not a photoshop document.
I've tried to repair it but even the repair apps can't read it. I'm 100% sure i saved it as .psd
Does anyone have a clue here of what could of have happen to it?
This is how it looks like on "finder"
The file is nearly 300MB large.. so there must be something in it? any help would be MUCH appreciated

My first thought is retrieving a backup copy via Time Machine if you set that up.
Krita is a free app that I have seen open Photoshop files that even Photoshop could not open. There you may find the problem layer or flatten it.

  • Illustrator & Photoshop CS3 Freeze When I Try to Open a Document

I have CS3 installed, and just since yesterday, when I open photoshop or illustrator and then try to open a document (just from file-open), the entire program freezes and won't let me click anywhere. I have to ctrl-alt-del to get the program closed. I have restarted my computer numerous times. If I don't have photoshop or illustrator open and go to my computer and find the file I want to open and double-click on it, it will open that document. But while that document is open, if I go to file-open, it then freezes again. Anyone know how to fix this?

That is I take it Pages '06? Which is a bit long in the tooth.
I'm trying unsuccessfully to find the minimum requirement for OSX 10.6, but yours may not be compatible with Snow Leopard.
Your contacts are no doubt using either Pages '08 or Pages '09 which as later versions can open yours but you can not open theirs.
Updating from Pages '06 is a no brainer IMHO.

  • Large Photoshop Document opens strange. Frames Lost?

<Sorry I have no idea if this has been posted before><br /><br />I'm not sure how to describe it.<br />I've been trying to find out what the problem is with my document.<br /><br />I've been animating in HD and i have about 300 frames. Which I've spent 3 days working on.<br />And it normally takes 10 minutes to load the document. (I have plenty of space on my computer)<br />So I decided I would open up the document and split it into two documents.<br /><br />But before I could do that, it opened the document in 3 seconds and ALL the frames are all fuzzy (like a TV with reception problems)<br /><br />Here is a picture. <I can post a bigger one if needed><br /><br />http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o93/xfluerx/photoshop/photoshopproblem.jpg<br /><br />I want to know if this can be fixed?<br />Or if I've lost everything completely.<br /><br />It normally opens fine. But now that's how it opens.<br />I can open all my other projects fine.<br /><br />Thanks~

ah okay~<br /><br />yeah my external hard drive is fine~  I could see the picture of one of the frames in the photoshop icon for the project. But when i clicked on it, it changed to just a plain icon <PSD, PS><br /><br />it did this for both computer and external files.<br /><br />Yeah I thought I might have lost it. Looks like I'll have to start all over and export it to .mov every 5 frames. (Which is going to take forever D= )<br /><br />I hate how photoshop is so expensive and yet it gets alot of bugs.<br /><br />Thanks for the help anyways guys~! ^^

  • Can you open a document in Photoshop cs6 and automatic have it open in print size

I work in 500 photos a day and print size helps me out. is there a way to have the document open in print size to save me a step?

It's possible. That would be called an Event Script. and it would be placed in the Event Scripts Only folder under Scripts in the Presets folder.
Then you would open Photoshop and go to File > Scripts > Event Scripts Manager to have this script run each time you open a file.
The problem is to find a script that already does this or ask someone to write it for you.
    You can ask in: http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_scripting

  • In finder, or say anything else such as downloaded files, I have to push open with in order to open the file. If I simply double-click on a document from finder, it does not open.

Hey guys. I have this problem where when I try to open say a document from finder, I have to push "open with."
Simply double-clicking does not work. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could help.
Another unrelated problem is that when I push to open itunes, it says that it is on a locked disk.
    Thanks

Select a particular download file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window.  In the Open With section choose the desired default application from the dropdown menu then click on the Change All button.
For .dmg files use DiskImageMounter (System/Library/CoreServices/ folder.)
For .zip files use Archiver - same folder as above - or download TheArchiver - MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

Pages crashes when opening any document on iPad 3 Latest version. I tried everything I could find on the net and finally deleted Pages from my device and reinstalled it. Still when I try to create a new document or open a document it just crashes out.

    Try this:
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version
Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder, Pages App. Recently sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) after iOS5 installed.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Rate/review Pages 5.2 in the App Store.

  • Saving a Photoshop CC project from a Mac (in .PSD format) to a thumb drive and trying to transfer it to a Dell laptop with Photoshop CS6.  Will not open...Error message: could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document.

Saving a Photoshop CC project from a Mac (in .PSD format) to a thumb drive and trying to transfer it to a Dell laptop with Photoshop CS6.  Will not open...Error message: could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document.

The file was corrupted somewhere along the way (assuming it was still readable on the Macintosh).
The platforms don't matter, but you still need file transfer that doesn't corrupt files...

  • Has anyone else been unable to click [open] a document folder while in the column view in finder?

Since I have downloaded Mavericks, I am unable to open any document folder in the column view in finder.  When i go to any other view such as cover flow or list, they open.  But when it is in the column view, I am unable to click any folder - or any document for that matter. Can anyone help or atleast tell me I'm not the only one?
    Mike

okay i figured it out. for some reason i had to go to the settings menu and click arrange by name and it automaticaly fixed it. it was weird all of the names were gray, and the color tags were to the left of the folder titles.  i hope this helps if any of you had that problem too.

  • I have been working on a document in Pages 4.3 and now it tells me I can not open the document unless I upgrade to Pages 5.2. When I look up Pages 5.2 the App store says "installed" nor can I find a "purchase" or "install" button.

My OS is 10.9.3.I've been working on a document in Pages 4.3. Now is says I can not open the document unless I upgrade to Pages 5.2. The Pages 5.2 page in the App store says "installed" nor can I find a "purchase" or "install" button. How do I get Pages 5.2?

If you have already updated to Pages 5.2 on your Mac, you may be trying to open the file with a previous version of Pages. If this is the case, you have two versions of Pages on your Mac & are trying to open Pages 5 documents with Pages 4. Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.
