Opening pictures in Preview 2.1 hangs

I'm trying to open eps files in Preview 2.1 and the application seems to be hanging in the "converting to pdf" stage, i.e. before it opens the picture. This is also happening with Graphic Converter. It sounds like something is wrong with the OS. Any ideas where the problem is?
Thanks,
Sue Lange

littleshoulders,
If you were here right now, we'd be hugging each other. I just solved the problem and we would neither have of us figured it out any other way other than sheer, unbelievable luck.
Tossing out the .plist thing did nothing. I also created a new user in which to try preview (a hint from a different post). That did nothing as well.
Old eps, new eps, none of them worked. What changed? I'll tell you. I spent about ten hours last week troubleshooting my LaTex installation. It was one of those sessions where you grasp at anything to try and figure out what's wrong. At one point I put a font file, fmex.pfb in the highest fonts folder. That didn't fix my LaTex problem so I moved on trying the next inane idea and forgot all about that stinking weird-*** font. Today when you had me check the other file fomats I realized it was a postscript conversion, i.e. OS native processing problem, and it was probably caused by one of the thousand weird things I tried last week with that ******** LaTex installation. Have you ever retraced 1000s of steps? I imagine you have and so know how much fun it is. Anyway it just so happens that out of the thousand things I tried, I remembered exactly two; one of which was that I put that stinking little weird-*** fmex.pfb font in the highest library folder and left it there to rot. Not only did it rot but it took the os postscript converter with it. It has now been removed to a better place where it can rot in **** for all I care because preview works again. I guess everything does boil down to font problems.
Hang in and hugs from across the miles.

  • Raw files for nikon d810 not showing a picture in preview. Have  camera raw plug in 8.6.0.250 . File will open in raw but no picture ahead of time.

Are you referencing Apple's Preview application or the Preview panel in Bridge?  Huge difference.
Try purging the cache for the offending folder(s) through the Tools menu in Bridge.

  • Preview won't open pictures....or anything

So I randomly noticed just the other day that all my pictures on my computer won't open with Preview. They've randomly been set to open with Illustrator. The weirdest part is I can't even open the pictures with Preview even when I drag them to the preview icon, control-click and choose "open with" won't let me choose preview, AND when i have Preview already open I can't open any pictures when I go File-Open. Keep in mind these are ALL pictures that have been opened with preview before. Any ideas, suggestions as to what is the problem? Any feedback is appreciated.

    Hi Neil,
    Try deleting this file: com.apple.Preview.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if Preview behaves.
By chance, did you save the Illustrator files to a format that Preview cannot read?
You can try right or control clicking one of the image files, click Get Info. In the Get Info window. Click where you see: Open with. Click the pop up menu. If Preview isn't listed, then click Other and browse to the Preview application.

If you are on Mac Salah’s first tip may need to have »click "Change All"« added to permanently affect files of the specific file format.

  • Can't open pics in Preview since Mountain Lion install

Hi - I use Preview to open my iPhoto pics and then save them at a smaller resolution for using on my web pages, blogs, emails etc. It's a bit cumbersome but it works. Now, since I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook (so it will sync documents with my iPad) blow me - I find I can't open files in Preview! I get a box headed 'icloud for Preview.' The text then says: 'You can move your existing documents to icloud by dragging them here from the finder or other apps.' There's then an option to cancel, and a greyed-out box saying Open, but of course I can't open anything! It means, really, that I have lost the ability to edit my pictures with Preview. Is this right? And is there anything I can do about it? Also, I notice my iPhoto icon has disappeared from my Finder so I can't open iPhoto from there. It's all happened since the Mountain Lion install. Can anyone help, please?

I don't know about your Preview problem and I am interested to see responses about it.
When you say no iPhoto in Finder. Do you mean iPhoto is not listed in the Applications folder? If you do a Finder search on iPhoto is it found. Mine is in "Bobs HD>Applications

  • How do I save a picture in "Preview" to the desktop?

    Hello,
Now that I'm using Lion, I'm having to re-learn several things and right now I'm trying to figure out how to save a picture to my desktop when I'm in "Preview". In Snow Leopard, all I had to do was go under the File menu and choose, "Save As". However, in Lion, that feature is gone. Instead, it says: "Save A Version". I have no idea what that means. When I am viewing a photo, if I select "Save A Version", I do not see anything happening. Maybe it is saving my photo somewhere on my computer, but if that is the case, I have no clue where it is being saved. What I want to be able to do is "Save" the photo with a name that I choose to give it (not the default name of the picture as it was emailed to me), and I want to be able to save it to my desktop. In Snow Leopard, choosing "Save As" would bring up a dialogue window where I could accomplish these things. So my question is: How do I do this is Lion?
    Thanks!

Open your picture in preview then select file>duplicate then go back the file menu and then select save, the save options window will open you can choose to save it to the desktop.

  • Updated my Macbook Air to Yosemite and now IMessage won't open pictures

I updated my Macbook Air to Yosemite a few days ago and since then IMessage has been acting up. It won't let open pictures now. A picture comes through titled "IMG_2882" but when I click on it, it comes up with a description of the image - the type of image, when it was last modified, etc. I click the 'Open with Preview" option and nothing happens. I'm regretting updating to Yosemite now. Is anyone else having this issue? I have no idea how to fix it. Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thank you!

If it is the third party apps crashing - try downloading another app - any free app is fine. See if that resets the other apps.

  • Originals won't open in iPhoto, Preview, Photoshop; Corrupted files?

I am using the latest version of iPhoto 6 (6.0.5, I think).
I have 2 external Firewire hard drives. One is for backup. One is for my music and pictures.
Everytime I would start iPhoto I would get "rebuild thumbnail cache". Knowing this is not normal, I used the latest version of Backup, and backed up to an external hard drive.
Now the external hard drive with the music and photos has failed completely (I think the circuit board is fried, but that's another story).
I restored my iPhoto library from my backup, to my computer's main drive. I checked permissions, and none required fixing.
Now all of my pictures are corrupted. The thumbnails show, but neither the originals nor the modified picture files will open in iPhoto, Preview, or Photoshop. I get the infamous "unknown or invalid JPEG marker type" error.
And I have rebuilt the iPhoto database several times to no avail.
I have 13500 pictures in my library, including the birth of my daughter and 3 years of her growing up. There must be a way to fix this.
    Please help!

Sorry to hear of your problems.
Right now I would concentrate on getting the pics back, and figure out the iPhoto part later.
Select one of the pics in the Finder and try change the file suffix: if it's pic.jpg, then try pic.JPG or .jpeg and see if that helps.
Try open the pics with Graphic Converter, which seems to be less fussy about things. You can download it here: http://www.lemkesoft.com/
BackUp (if this is the Apple App we're talking about) creates a pkg file. Can you see the one you restored from? Right click on it, and choose 'Show Package Files. Inside you'll find a .dmg file. This contains the actual files. Mount the dmg and see if you can find the files inside it. Can you view them in Preview?

  • Copy and paste pictures from preview to ebay problem

    Hi.
I am creating adverts on eBay with my macbook and when I copy and paste a picture from preview, into the body of the advert it works fine and displays fine. I then save the advert and go to view it on my mac and all displays ok.
However my problem is when I view it on anything other than a mac. The pics just show up as a small block with a strange symbol in it.
    Anybody got any ideas?
It seems daft that I can create an ad on a PC and you can view pics no matter what machine you use, yet when I use a mac it's not the case. I hope it doens't mean I have to keep using my PC.
So you know, I have tried it with the picture file being a ".png" file and a ".jpg" file and it made no difference.
    Thanks
    Mark

Sorry to disagree but this isn't right.
I copy and paste on my PC and it works just fine to view on anything so if what you're saying is right then it would surely do the same on a PC.
Aslo it IS saving the image in the body of the ad because if I view it on another mac it displays correctly.
I'm not sure what you mean by you upload the pictures at the end. I want to type a bit about the product, then have a picture, then type some more and maybe put some more pics. Like this
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180637405596&ssPageName=STR K:MESELX:IT#ht1600wt1141
    or this
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180635082165&ssPageName=STR K:MESELX:IT#ht1266wt1141
The only difference here is these were created on a PC.
I must add on thing though. When I'm trying to add the pictures, I have them open in "preview" and I crop them by using the instant alpha cutting tool. Then I copy and paste it. I've even tried savingit as a jpeg file and a bmp file and makes no difference.
    Thanks

  • I'm trying to find a way to move pictures from Preview to iPhoto. Tried "rebuilding  library"...nothing happens.  Help!

I'm trying to find a way to move pictures from Preview to iPhoto. Tried "rebuilding  library"...nothing happens.  Pictures ssomehow wound up in Preview after I needed to do a clean install (Snow Leopard) and moved files from an external drive. Help!

If you saw the images with Preview in the other iPhoto Library, than try to open iPhoto with that Library:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505
If the Photos are there, replace the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder with the one from the external.  (posted by Keith)
    My response:
The pictures don't appear in Preview in the other user account.  They also don't appear in the external drive (!!!????).  I discovered I can get the pictures into iPhoto by saving from Preview to the desktop, then importing into iPhoto, but only one at a time.
Clearly the files are on the hard drive somewhere, but where?  The  'iPhoto library" icon that appears in my Pictures folder is a "package" which can't be opened on it's own....it's only able to be  imported into Preview.
This feels like the Twilight Zone to me.....

  • Pictures in Preview Drawer...Where's the drawer???

Okay, this does it. Note to self: Buy Dummies book for operating system!
I use a lot of pictures and sort them using Preview...in the "drawer" mode, meaning that they appear in a thumbnail and I can scroll up and down to see all of the pictures.
All of a sudden, the drawer is missing and each picture opens separately. I certainly don't remember changing any preferences, etc. I did have to use Adobe Acrobat a couple times when a .pdf would not open properly in Preview. I read a couple earlier posts, so I ran Disk Utility, etc.
Can someone tell me how to get the "drawer" back. And this "Dummy" is hoping you know what I am talking about!
Geez....it's the little things in life that are so frustrating!
    Thanks!

    Hi Mickey560,
This is a bit after the fact, but I wanted to mention that this may have been a matter of just resetting the toolbar in your Preview app. I'm not sure why resetting the PRAM settings would correct the Preview drawer missing problem but it sounds more like your drawer was just hidden.
The settings held in PRAM are listed at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
so I'm not sure why that would have corrected the problem (?).
When you opened Preview was the "Toolbar" for Preview visible? Was the icon for the "drawer" visible in the toolbar if the toolbar was visible? If "this" was the problem all you needed to do was go to the "View" menu (in Preview app) and select "Customize Toolbar" selection. This would allow you to drag the "Drawer" icon back to the Toolbar. Or if the Toolbar was missing you just needed to select "Show Toolbar" in the View Menu.
Sorry if that was not your original problem but just wanted to let you know if the problem ever arises again.
All's well at this point, so I guess this is moot, but just in case for your future information....
    good luck,

    Hi Afiniki,
If you are having issues with your iPad opening picture files slowly  and becoming unresponsive while photo browsing, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPhone -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
