Opening PKG

While installing Photoshop Elements this morning I erroneously typed in the wrong serial number. When I tried to open the application it shut down due to the wrong information. I manually trashed all files on the hard drive that had anything relating to Adobe Photoshop 4.0 in order to be able to install the program freash. Evidently I unwittingly erased some other important file because now, when I try to activate the Adobe installer, I get this message:
"There is no default application specified to open the document "Adobe Photoshop Elements.pkg"
Have I erased some important file from my Mac system? If so, which one is it, and how can I recover it or re-install it?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Install the UnArchiver and try again.

There is no Installer.app in the Utilities or Applications folder, there is one in the System/Library/CoreServices.
If yours is not there, then you need to:
1: Backup your data off the machine to a non-TimeMachine drive and disconnect all drives.
2: If you have TM, try to restore the Installer.app from the TM drive and reboot. See if things work.
If the above doesn't work, your going to have to re-install just OS X 10.6 (and bundled programs) from the disk by holding c and booting off the 10.6 disk and simply installing OS X. Then software updating to 10.6.8.
This will replace all bundled programs and OS X, not touch your files (backup regardless) and most third party programs.
Some third party programs will have to be reinstalled form original sources because they install Kext files into OS X and thus kicked out by the 10.6 reinstall form disk.
All should go well, however if you boot to a gray screen or other freeze, reboot holding the shift key down, then update all your third party software to be current to 10.6.8.
Another method is to re-install in to CoreServices the Installer.app from the 10.6 disk using the extraction program called Pacifist from CharleSoft, then running software update to get any updates for Installer.app.

  • 10.3.9 combo update, - opening "pkg"

I have downloaded the combo installer. when I open the disk image, I end up with updater...pkg. What App. do I use to open a "pkg" and get started. Currently, "Pacifist" wants to open it. Also, is it best to update from another HD or is it ok to update my current startup Drive? Thanks!!

    Hi nuthinbutmacs
This post seem to be overlooked. Allow me to attract some linkers.
If you use Software Update, it would automatically install the 10.3.9 combo.
Is there any reason why you are doing it manually?
All packages should have as their default application Installer. Go to a .pkg file and use Command + i to open the information window. Where it says Open with: choose Installer., and Apply to... Change all.
That will return Installer to be the default application to open .pkg's
Your final question about where to install from.
Install the Update Combo on the Drive you wish to update.

  • Cannot open .pkg files in OS X 10.4.11 or run installer

I recently had to repair disk permissions & verify disk in Disk utility from installer disk. After I did this the only issue I have is opening a .pkg file or running installer. The installer window flashes and closes and does not run. I have right clicked to choose to "open with" installer and same thing happens. I have tried to locate installer from some of the other thread postings to open manually but same thing happens, nothing. This is not an isolated .pkg file, at first I was under the assumption that it was a corrupt file download but it is every file .pkg that I attempt. Any help? Thanks.

  • Cannot open pkg in dmg file am told the download has been

    Mavericks upgrade?!
I download a driver from Epson, open the dmg file OK, then open the pkg file OK, and am told the app has been installed sucessfully.
    BUT
I cannot find the app anywhere, so cannot use my Epson Stylus Pro 3880.
Epson has given me an Apple driver to download, but again nothing to be seen or used once the file has been downloaded.
Christmas is coming, the time is getting short.
I want to get some photos printed
    Or
    I'm in shtuck !

Depending upon the nature of the software there may be no application to open.  It might just be a component that appears when you choose a printer to print to from within the print interface for the application you are using.  That's how a typical driver acts.

  • Can't open .pkg files. Going mad, please help!

I'm trying to open an edirol driver with a .pkg file type but the icon just expands and then nothing happens. Same thing happpens with other .pkg files. I've opened with Installer, tried creating a new admin user, copied to desktop but to no avail. Is there anything else I can try short of Archive & Install? Bit scared of trying that. Please help.
    Thanks.

    Prince of Wales:
I just downloaded the file in Firefox. In the download window I clicked Open and the file was expanded on my desktop. I located the folder and double clicked. I then double-clicked on the .pkg and it opened the installer and was ready to run the script to see if the software could be installed on my computer.
I suggest that you try downloading the file again and see if a new download makes a difference. Incidentally, not that it should make a difference, what browser are you using? Have you had difficulty expanding and installing any other downloads.
    Good luck.

I just bought a used ipad and wiped it and downloaded v 7.1.2 of the mac OS.
this is my first ever Apple product, and I'm trying to download MS Office on it to use for school.
i Have the .pkg file on my Drive but I am unable to open it and run the download. I get the error : "you do not have any apps that support this file type. Unable to open."

There are alternatives to M$ Office on the iPad.

  • Can't open .pkg, can't find installer

I'm trying to install new drivers for a M-Audio recording interface, the file is a .pkg, and I can't find Mac OS Installer. What can I use to open it, or where can I find a download for Mac OS installer? I don't even know why my computer doesn't have Mac OS installer.. I just installed Tiger only 5 days ago.

It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder. If it isn't there you can do a custom install of software from your install discs (no need to do a full OS install). You can't download it from anywhere.

  • Cannot open pkg files

I am trying to install Neooffice and Macscan, but when I double click on the pkg file I get a notification stating:
Ther eis no default application specified to open the document "MacScan Installer.pkg".
    Choose
    Cancel choose application

There shouldn't BE an "installer folder" but an application:
"/Applications/Utilities/Installer.app" (if you are like me you may have the extensions hidden)
I can't imagine how you ended up with a folder called installer with a Filemaker trial in it, but evidently that somehow replaced your Installer.app program, which would explain why .pkg files won't install.
Try extracting Installer from your install disk with Pacifist:
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
It downloads as a dmg file which mounts and then you just drag it to your Applications folder.

  • Can't open .pkg files

  • I can't open my .pkg files

Well my problem is simple. I have an Intel iMac and i bought Toast Titanium.... Well... i accidentally set my .PKG or packages file to open all the files which is a problem because that means now i cannot open programs that people had made and i cannot install any apps at all... i want a way for my .pkg to open back with finder or watever the application it uses.

.pkg files are normally opened with the Installer.app which is located in Applications/Utilities. To reset Installer to be the default app for .pkg files, highlight a .pkg file from a Finder window and choose Get Info from the Finder menu. In the Get Info window go to the Open with pane and select Installer from the pull-down menu. If it isn't offered as one of the apps to Open .pkg files, select Other and browse to its location at Applications/Utilities to select it. After Installer is the chosen app press the Change All button to make Installer the permanent default app to open .pkg files.

  • .PKG files won't open

So I downloaded some shareware recently and out of nowhere .pkg files can't be recognized and I can't install anything. It just gives me an option to choose an application with which to open it. This comes after cleaning out my hard drive of crap I don't use. Did I delete something by mistake that recognizes those files or can I just tell the OS which program to open .pkg's with? I'm not sure which program that would be, by the way

    ^I didn't delete any system files---only applications that I didn't use.
I don't see the installer program where you say it is -- is it under a different name than installer in that folder or, if that isn't the case, is there a way I can re-install it from the Mac OSX disc? Thanks for your help

  • Have problem installing .pkg

I can't open .pkg files. When i double click it, it says which application i should use, but i can't find the installer app from finder. So what should I do? Maybe someone could recommend some other utility to install .pkg.

You need Installer.app & it should automatically open files with the ".pkg" extension.
To resolve this, first make sure Installer.app is in the CoreServices folder (path: System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app). If not, either reinstall Snow Leopard using your installer DVD (it won't erase your files) & updating it to current versions, or you can try using Pacifist to extract the app from the DVD & place it into the CoreServices folder.
Once you are sure the app is in place, highlight any .pkg file in Finder & open the 'Get Info' window for it. In the "Open with" section of the Get Info window, select Installer (which may require choosing the "Other…" item & navigating to it). Then click the "Change all …" button below that (if necessary) to associate the app with all .pkg files.

  • UsrVol_sftfs_v1.pkg size limitation (App-V 4.6 SP2)

    Hello
Im currently using App-V 4.6 SP2 Client and the applications are installed using the msi. The sequenced application is a trader application and has different functionalities.
During one of the functions which was working correctly previously the application started giving a disk full error eventhough there was 130 GB free space on the machine.
On checking more it was found the size of UsrVol_sftfs_v1.pkg in folder under "%Appdata%\Soft Client\" had grown upto 1.97 GB.
Is there any size limitation on UsrVol_sftfs_v1.pkg file? If yes what is the limit and is there any official documentation for it as i could find it in the white paper as well.
    Thanks in advance
    Sujit Jadhav

Apparently there is no public info about the .pkg's max size.  As far as I can remember discussed values ranged from about 120 MB up to 4 GB.
Anyway you could try to identify _what_ is blowing up the .pkg and to avoid that beeing in the App-V Package (either by telling the application that it should store certain data on a different location [like Appdata] or by excluding certain folders from
the App-V package [so that this data gets written to the local disk]).
PkgView by Tim Mangan is small and free and should do the job: http://www.tmurgent.com/Tool_PkgView.aspx
Application Virtualization Explorer Professional by Gridmetric / Kalle Saunamäki can open .pkg files as one of its features: http://www.gridmetric.com/products/ave_editions.html (not
sure, but the free Trial could be sufficient).

  • Bootcamp program? and Anime Studio 5 Installing help.

    Bootcamp program.
    Hi i downloaded bootcamp.
    I have a mac book.
When i try extracting the .dmg file
and when the new finder window opens. The .pkg icon didnt show up. It wont open and says choose application to open it.
I can read the readme files. But it wont open the pkg.
Also it is the same problem with anime studio 5.
Can you suggest anything to help me.

The application to open .pkg files is the 'Installer' ...located in your Applications/Utilities Folder. Hopefully it hasn't been deleted ...and to make it the default application to open .pkg files simply do a 'Get Info' on any .pkg file then got to 'Open with...' and make the 'Installer' the default application for this file.
