Opening "Preferences" folder will crash the Finder every time!

On my 24" iMac with OSX 10.6.5, opening User's "Preferences" folder will crash the Snow Leopard Finder every time! This will happen even if I try to open a saved "Preferences" folder on an external drive.
On the brand-new 27" iMac also with OSX 10.6.5, the same thing will happen, but less frequently.
Is there way around this annoying problem???
Thanks for the help!

Problem solved thanks to a tip on the internet:
Fetch 4.0.3 preference files were causing the Snow Leopard Finder to crash constantly. Removing the files from both iMacs and the problem went away immediately.
Since I couldn't open the Snow Leopard folder containing the Fetch prefs files long enough to remove them, I used a MacBook, running Leopard to remove the files through the network.

  • I am having difficulty opening my iPhoto on my macbook. Every time I try to access it, it freezes or the application will just not open at all. What can I do to open it successfully?

I am having difficulty opening my iPhoto on my macbook. Every time I try to access it, it freezes or the application will just not open at all. What can I do to open it successfully?

Select iPhoto in the Applications folder the type Command+i to bring up its Info window.  That will tell you what version it is.
As a first fix attempt do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Selecting any file as 'Open With' crashes the Finder and worse than this...

This is happening w/ ANY file on my system & quite a pain if I want to open something in quicktime 7 instead of x.... can't do it. So then I open QT 7 & try to open it that way & doing it that way only crashes QT instead of the Finder.
I just ran DiskUtility this morning..
So, I open up TextEdit & then try and select 'open file' and again.... TextEdit crash (*further detail below). Apparently, the only way to open my files is to double-click the doc. themselves.
*When the 'Open' pane comes up, it automatically has the Desktop place selected & then GarageBand & iTunes in the top half (GarageBand selected) & down below it says 'Loading GarageBand songs...' so, it appears to be stuck and I have no choice to select anything else.
    Ideas on what to do?

how do you move fonts to the desktop... they only 'copy' & it won't let you delete it from 'library'.
The fonts your looking to drag to the Desktop are in your Home directory. Are you sure you chose /Users/yourname/Library/Fonts?
    coffeemugger wrote:
if it's corrupt & pinpointing is hard....is there a way to do something to open up permissions for all my software so i can just bail and go w/ the new administrative account w/ out having to do license keys all over again?
You can do that without worry about licenses or permissions on apps by dragging all the folders within your present Home separately to your new Home folder. i.e. Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, etc.
a friend said in the past people have had crazy stuff w/ more than 1 quicktime version on their puter & they had to rename one of them... but this is affecting more than 1 program & crashing the finder ... but thought i'd throw that in for the heck of it.
You can rename or delete QT 7. The only problem is that it will probably re-appear on the next update. I'm not sure if it will help though.

Yes, I am connected to the Internet through my wifi. Everything is working fine with the e  eption of youtube.  I have reset all Internet settings and have tried synching to iTunes followed by rebooting.  This is all the advice I have found although none of it has been helpful.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Maybe find a local who can translate for you. I don't know what to tell you for dealing in another country for service on your computer.
I can offer you something you can do if you want to give it a try. You'll need a backup of your data in your Home folder because you need to erase the drive. You'll also need a solid, preferably fast, internet connection.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
    If the box marked
              Keep login keychain unlocked
    is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

    I had this issue. I went to c:\program files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\
I renamed my plugins folder to plugins.old.
It recreated the Plugins folder and all was good again. I have since reinstalled the plugins I've been prompted to install.

  • HT5137 I made a purchase with my debit card on The Simpson Tapped out game, And now my game won't open. It just kicks me out every time I click on it. How do I fix this problem with out deleting my app?

I made a purchase with my debit card on The Simpson Tapped out game, And now my game won't open. It just kicks me out every time I click on it. How do I fix this problem with out deleting my app?

Personally, I would never use a debit card online, for security reasons.  If your card gets hacked its your money that is stolen.  At least with a credit card it is the card providers money that is stolen.
Anyway,  I would delete the app and re-install.  If you paid for the app in the first place you will be able to re-install free of charge.  Also, the app should allow the in-app purchase to happen again as it should recognise that you have already purchased it previously.
Finally, it might be that the 3G doesnt have as much ram as more recent models of iphone and you may have applications running in the background that are preventing the app to function with the in-app purchase unless you shut down any apps eating all you memory that are running in the background.  Shut-down these apps (and the simpson tap out app) by exiting to your home screen and double-tapping the home button to show what apps are running in the background.  press and hold any of the open apps until it starts shaking.  close all the apps down.  exit then re-launch the app.
    good luck.

  • Is there a way to have a book open at the start every time?

I'd like my eBook to open at the beginning every time it's launched fresh—is that possible or is it always going to open up at the last visited location? Is there a preference in iBooks author or something? Or in iBooks itself on the iPad? I don't see it. The "Videos" on iPads have a preference to start at the beginning or start where you left off. Just wondering if the books have something similar.

What you're talking about is the default navigation that is part of iBooks, so no, it doesn't appear you can force a restart from open, sorry.
Your reader would need to navigate there each time they leave the book.
As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

My macbook pro is probably only 2 months old and there is a buzzing/grinding noise coming from the left side of the laptop every time I open it.  It may buzz 5 times in a span of 30 seconds then not make the noise the remaining time that it is open.  I have read that it may have to do with my fan or HD.  I am under apple care for a good amount of time but am wondering if this is a mjor issue.  I would not be able to get to an apple care center in the near future due to being at school.  Should I be worried or will it last by the time I am home in 2 months.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up
If you are still concerned you can take it into the Apple Store where they can hear it to be sure

  • I used a terminal command to show the Library in the User folder, and now the Finder is behaving erractically.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the show library terminal command?

I used a terminal command in Lion to show the LIbrary in the Users folder, and now the Finder is behaving erratically, hanging up and becoming almost paralyzed.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the terminal command for show Library.  The command I used was:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

Showing the Library folder will not cause the problem you've described. Nevertheless:
    chflags hidden ~/Library
will hide the folder. To reveal the folder:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Note, there is no "/" after Library.
