Opening ps files in illustrator cs5, created with GMT

Hi!
I use illustrator to edit my ps files created with GMT (Generic Mapping Tools). It was not a problem on my macintosh but I cannot open them with my new PC.
My OS is windows 7 - 64-bit.
When I open these GMT generated ps files the colors are changed and lines are shifted when compared  with the original ps image (which I can open and view in GSview, a  postscript viewer, with no problem). It seems that the opened ps contains the figure twice.
I tried different configurations:
- It works on windows XP 32bit with illustrator CS
- it works on mac OS X with illustrator CS2
- it does not work on  windows 7 64bit with illustrator CS3 and CS5
Thanks!
Julia

Hi Laura,
I have the same problem with CS5... and no previous versions to convert my files!
Did you find another way?
Thanks!

  • Opening eps files  in illustrator cs3, created with GMT

I have been using previous versions of illustrator (10.0, 11.0, 12.0) to edit my eps files created with GMT (Generic Mapping Tools) with no problem.
I have just recently installed CS3. When I open these GMT generated eps files the colors are changed and lines are shifted when compared with the original eps image (which i can open and view in GSview, a postscript viewer, with no problem).
My current work-a-round is to open these eps files with illustrator 11.0 (which I have installed on another computer), save the file as an AI file (version 11.0), and then open this file with illustrator CS3. The file then displays correctly.
My question is this, what has changed with the CS3 version of illustrator that does not allow me to open eps files created with GMT (Generic Mapping Tools). Older versions of Illustrator open these files with no problems.
My OS is windows XP - 64-bit. My older computer running illustrator 11.0 is winXP - 32 bit. I bought the newer Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Standard because I was having trouble installing the older version of illustrator onto my 64-bit machine.
    Thanks!

I have problems opening some EPS-files that I downloaded from Shutterstock. Their support person told me to contact your support. I’m using Illustrator CS5.1 on a PC. When I try to open the files Illustrator's suddenly not responding and I have to close the program to continue.

    Hi Lotta,
Will it be possible for you to share with me any one of the EPS file with which AI is crashing ?

  • Opening Raw files in Elements 6 created with Panasonic FZ28

I'm new to this but hope someone can help me with the transition from editing JPEG to Panasonics RAW2 files. I'm not able to open the files and get a message saying the file is not supported by Elements however the Adobe website says it does support the FZ28. I've downloaded the latest version of the RAW/DNG editor but to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Paige, Thanks for the reply. I did go to the Plug In info via Editor and yes I had downloaded version 5.2. I also saw in the forum that I should remove the 8BI file and replace it with the new one,did that. As I have an Athlon 64 processor I tried the Win 64 version , no luck here. I should add I am no expert re computers so probably approaching this from the wrong direction!
Later i saw that the FZ28 has a problem and tried the suggestion from Adobe in downloading the DNG converter,no luck here either. Each time whether Raw or Dng it does not recognise the files. I'm wondering if it's just too early for the FZ28 but others must be using it.
Thanks for any suggestions and hope you have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year

Try telling students who barely have two nickels to rub together these days that they have to outlay $400-500 dollars every year to be able to keep up to date with the programs at their schools. I can barely get these kids to package their files properly and now they have to remember to export their files to idml and remember to put them in their folders before they copy it onto their external hard drive to bring it home to work on. Is it really necessary to update every bloody year and charge these kids so much to upgrade. And this time only for a .5 upgrade?  A lot of these kids have parents that are sacrificing every thing to pay for their kids college education. What message is adobe sending to these kids? That the study of graphic design is only for the rich who can afford to upgrade every year. Have a heart in this economy.
Your points about the hardship of expensive learning materials, and the extra work involved in saving to IDML, are all valid.
If/when online applications come into common use, some of the issues may fade away, because the newest and older versions will always be available for a user to choose from.
In the meantime, perhaps some of these suggestions will be useful:
    * Adobe's volume licensing plan (VLP, I think) and transactional licensing plan (TLP) have been mentioned in this forum, in regard to the option of buying licenses for earlier releases. My thought is that your school could "freeze" their installations at a useful recent release, to extend the useful life of a student's own purchased educational copy. Search Google for terms like "InDesign volume license transactional license" without quotes. Also, perhaps someone who knows more about these options will jump in here.
    * Unless there are compelling class needs for the new features in new releases, there's no need to upgrade. Depending on the course's level, some features wouldn't be needed for lower-level classes; for the higher-level classes, use the newer software.
    * If possible, allow students to install DropBox, or other  online storage software, on the school computers, so they can save files remotely, and access them from any Internet connection. This won't eliminate the saving to IDML step, but it can eliminate the copy-to-transport-media step, simplifying things a bit. There may be security and other IT issues here to be worked out.
    * For students who intend to enter the design career, it may be less expensive to buy an upgradeable non-educational license, or even - shudder - a subscription. Subscriptions, I believe, can be activated and deactivated for specific periods, like rental cars, so, for example, if/when a student graduates and takes a job where the employer provides the software, or the student doesn't need the software for a semester or quarter, the subscription can be idled, and there's no cost. If the student becomes an independent designer, the subscription can be reactivated when there's work to be done. I believe Bob Levine once posted a comparison, on this forum, of cost-to-license InDesign, for subscriptions vs. other licensing methods. Bob?
Sometimes folks compare the ongoing cost of software and upgrades to other industries and careers that don't seem to have the same issues. However, the tools needed in many industries and careers are no longer so static, as in the past. Carpenters who worked with manual tools could use hammers, screwdrivers, etc., until they wore out or broke, but  the introduction of electric nail drivers, screwdrivers, and drills forced production carpenters to upgrade their tools. Perhaps the increased output of mechanized tools balanced their increased cost. Draftsmen's triangles, T-squares, pens, etc., don't need upgrades, but there have been about 20 AutoCAD software releases for them to keep up with.
Recently I had to replace my 1991 stick-shift car with a "new-to-me" 2005 model. It's like all the newer cars I've rented at times - automatic everything. I've done most maintenance and repair on the old one, and I always carried tools in case something broke on the road, and I could fix it myself. The new car is a disaster; the only fixing and maintenance I might possibly do is change a flat tire, add fuel, window-washer juice, oil, power brake and steering fluids, wash the exterior, vacuum the interior, set radio-station presets, and change the battery in the remote-control device that opens and locks the doors, and activates the entire computerized beast. There's nothing for me to do but open the doors, get in, turn on the engine, and aim in some direction.
Mechanics, whose basic-level wrenches and ignition-timing strobe lights were capable of doing an amazing range of tasks over decades of model changes, now need annual expensive software upgrades for the computerized tools that troubleshoot and maintain the modern rolling computers that have replaced cars as some of us knew them.

  • Placing Photoshop file in Illustrator CS5 - why doesn't it work?

I frequently place Photoshop files into Illustrator CS3 without issue.... the PS file places right into the file with transparent surroundings.
I just upgraded to CS5 and for some reason, I "Place" the Photoshop file, but nothing shows up in Illustrator.  I must not have a preference set correctly.
    Can you help?
    Thanks.

Hi Matthew - thanks for taking the time to check this issue out for me.
I have just uninstalled Illustrator CS5, because I need to get things done - and reverted back to CS3..... however, I did duplicate a file to demonstrate what I'm doing.
I created a sample file with a very simple, non-descript  green vector shape.... then, In Photoshop, I created a yellow image that says Photoshop Placed File.  I gave it a dropshadow...
I then went back to Illustrator and selected 'File/place'..... and selected the photoshop file described above.  I then placed it on top of the green vector image in Illustrator CS3 and it layed on top fine - with NO white box around it as a jpg would do.  PLUS, the black dropshadow fades nicely over whatever image color you place it upon.... it 'gradually' lets the vector color below it show through as the fade diminishes to 0%.
NOW - I tried to 'place' a file into Illustrator CS5 in this same manner.... and I get absolutely nothing!  The Raster photoshop image doesn't even show up in Illustrator CS5.  This is where I was at when I started the topic.
    Any ideas??

  • Import/Open SVG Files in Fireworks CS5!

    Hey,
I really need to import/open SVG files in Fireworks CS5. I have been searching the Web for days now, but I can't find anything. The reason for this is that I get thousands of files sent to me in SVG format that I needto incorporate into my designs made in Fireworks. I solve it today by opening the files in Illustrator, copy each one of them, paste in Fireworks... WTF!
So please tell me someone made this easy for me?
    Many thanks!

I also have this problem. I didnt exatly find a solution, however here's the way i learnt to use .svg without losing editability in Fireworks.
    1. Download Inkscape as suggested by Joyce Evans Erb. Here
    2. Open the SVG file you need to work with in Inkscape.
    3. Go to File > Save As and select .eps (Encapsulated PostScript)
    4. Open the saved .eps file in Fireworks.
Now you might get a bit of unnecessary space around the file but it should work out just fine.
Also, if you havn't already go check out thenounproject.com . It's a great resource for us Fireworks types.
As a final note, i'd just like to plead with Adobe to put a bit more effort into Fireworks. It's a great program that i feel is being dragged along with the suite. (Hope to see some really awesome stuff in Fireworks CS6.5 *wink* )

  • Placing Photoshop files in Illustrator CS5 results in wrong percentages of spot colors?

When placing a native PSD file into Illustrator CS5 that includes different percentages of spot colors they will be different than what was specified in Photoshop. The spot colors are overlaying CMYK to create a see thru look.
For example if the spot color is 40% it will end up being 16%. 100% will stay at 100%, but any other percentage will be different than what is entered in Photoshop.
We are able to see the difference when creating a PDF or when the file is output to our high end printer. It can also be visually seen when putting an Illustrator CS4 and and Illustrator CS5 side by side.
I can take the same PSD file and place it into Illustrator CS4 and it retains the percentage that is entered in Photoshop. All percentages match the percentages that are entered in Photoshop when a PDF is created or printed to our printer.
I have tried saving the PSD file out as a Tiff file and a DCS2.0 file and get the same results in Illustrator CS5.
Is there a bug in Illustrator CS5 or should we handle our Spot Color Scans a different way? We never had this issue with any previous version of Illustrator.
Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Mike,
I understand what your saying but I should have mentioned that the Spot Colors are actually overlaying the CMYK in Photoshop not in Illustrator CS5. When this scan gets placed in Illustrator the Spot Colors values are different. There is no art below the scan in Illustrator. Hope this makes it a little clearer on what were trying to do.
Also remember that it works just fine in any version of Illustrator before CS5.
    Thanks

  • Cannot open indd file in either CS5 or CS5.5

I downloaded CS5.5 on my laptop this afternoon. I then opened a CS5 file, worked on it, then saved. Now I cannot open the file in either CS5 or CS5.5. Is says InDEsign may not support the file format, the file is missing, or it is opened in anaother application. Does anyone know how I can open this file?

    Just to be clear:
It won't open in either version. I created the file in CS5 (school computer lab), worked on it in CS5.5 (on my personal laptop connected through the server), then tried to open it on a school coputer using CS5. The file will not open.
Once you edit a CS5 file in CS5.5, it becomes a CS5.5 file and you will not be able to open it in CS5.
Make sure you are running the version you think you are, and don't double-click the file, but actually use File > Open from within InDesign CS5.5.

  • Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software

Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software (For example from Solidworks).
When I try to right click on a JPEG, a notice window appears written: "Windows Explorer has stopped working - Windows is
checking for a solution to the problem" and then the notice box disapears, the desktop appears and I can continue working.
From the other side - If I try to save as JPEG a screen of Solidworks (like a view of a part) the Solidworks falls but the JPEG
is created (I can see its name in the directory I created it).
I can open the JPEGS with the Paint software if I want but not with the Windows Photo Viewer.
I have the feeling that the Windows Photo Viewer disapeared from my computer - just a feeling.
    I will appreciate your assistance.

  • How to open .dwg file in Illustrator 6?

I am unable to open .dwg files  in Illustrator 5 & 6 on my new Macbook Pro (OS 10.7.4). I get an error message "the plugin cannot be initialized for the lack of the initialization file "ADINI.DAT"." This computer  had AI transferred using Apple's Setup Assistant.
I can open the same .dwg file on an different MacBook Pro in both AI 5 & 6 (the AI installation here was by disk).
It looks like I may need to remove & reinstall AI on the newer computer. But before I do that I'm wondering if there's an easier way. What do I need to do to be able to open .dwg files using AI6?

    Reinstallation is the simplest solution.
You may want to be a tad clearer in the future regarding version numbers. It'll simply help get answers faster. Illustrator version 5 and version 6 are drastically different than CS5 (version 15) and CS6 (version 16).

  • Can I open psd file made in photoshop cs3 with photoshop ps2?

Can I open psd file made in photoshop cs3 with photoshop ps2? Thanks in advance!

Actually you can open a CS3 file with smart filters in CS2
the only problem is CS2 will not understand the Smart filter and flatten it.
If you leave the smart filtered object alone in CS2 save the file and it should still be a smart filtered object in CS3
