Opening PSD layers in the timeline.

I have forever and a day opened PSD layers in Photoshop by double clicking the graphic on the timeline. Now nothing. Haven't changed settings or preferences. Not sure what to do. Is it something obvious I'm missing?

Your post is a bit confusing to me since you said; "I have forever and a day opened PSD layers in Photoshop by double clicking the graphic on the timeline."
The normal action when double-clicking a layered PSD file in the Timeline is that it opens in its own timeline since FCP treats layered PSDs as a nested Sequence. They will not open in Photoshop as you suggest. To get a PSD to open in Photoshop, right-click on it and select "Open in Editor."
But I may have misinterpreted want you want to do ... did you really mean "open in Photoshop" or do you mean you want to access the individual layers of the file in FCP?

How to open psd files without the cloud?

I just downloaded Adobe Touch for digital scrapbooking purposes. How can I open a psd file that I've downloaded and unzipped if I don't want to use the Adobe Common Cloud? Ideally I'd like my ipad to have an "open in Adobe Touch" option after I've unzipped the file.

PS Touch can't open PSDs locally. They have to be imported via Creative Cloud (and even then, they are flattened when imported).
I imagine this was a "quality of life" decision since PS Touch can only support up to 16 layers in a particular project. That and maybe the fact that Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements) can use layer masks, which PS Touch doesn't presently have.

I opened a clip in the timeline - HOW DO I CLOSE IT?

Surely I'm not stuck with that clip-specific timeline forever? How on earth do I get RID of the stupid thing? There doesn't seem to be a "close clip timeline" option anywhere.
And while I'm on the subject - as a fairly experienced FCP (pre X) user, I am incredibly perplexed by WHAT USE the clip timeline is. I can use it to select a range that I'd like to add to my main storyline.... BUT having selected the range, I can determine NO WAY to move it into the main storyline. If you can't do that, what POSSIBLE use is range-selection?
This version is just indescribably frustrating to me.

There are back and forward buttons in the upper left that can take you to any previously opened project or item. Cmd-bracket. You can't close the timeline panel, so if it's the only thing you're ever opened it will have to sit there until you open something else.

Opening psd layers in Illustrator

I have a question about the layers I created in photoshop and I would like to open as a vector in illustrator.
The layers in photoshop as a smart object are done in pen tool.
The question is a little confusing, but what I'd really like is to take an art that I created in photoshop pro after effects, as a vector. Only when I open the AE, rasterize all layers and can not work by increasing the elements.
Hence I wonder if I can bring all these elements created in Photoshop vector shape in Illustrator pro.
Without me having to "redo" everything in illustrator = /

Text created in Premiere showing other text files in the timeline and exports.

Hi,
I'm creating slates with text generated in Premiere. For each new slate I am duplicating a text layer, Option + Dragging the duplicate file over the text I'd like to replace, then opening the new text layer in the text editor and updating the information.
Things seem fine at first and then randomly text layers in the timeline will show text from other files in the timeline. If I open the text file up in the text editor I see the correct info but not in the timeline.
The only fix I have found is to delete render files, move the text layer around in the timeline, quit and re-open. But still, sometimes when I export, the export preview window will show the wrong text and when I export the file I create shows the wrong text as well.
It seems like Premiere is getting confused by multiple text files in the timeline and is pointing to the wrong cache files.
Thoughts would be a huge help!

I've had this happen on a number of projects. My media and project files are on a SAN, cache and previews are local.

View audio wave form in A1 and A2 etc in the timeline instead of the Viewer

It's likely this is an amateur question buuut -
Is there anyway to get the audio wave form to show in the Audio layers in the timeline. The only way I've seen to adjust and play with audio is when I double click on one of the tracks and then the audio tab in the viewer will open. I want to be able to see waveform in the timeline and then add or remove markers and adjust from the timeline -
There's got to be some way to adjust audio and play and stop so that you can watch the video and hear audio changes as you tweak it at the same time.

Upgraded to Yosemite now I cannot open PSD files on illustrator. Please help

I recently upgraded to Yosemite on my Mac and now when I open Illustrator I cannot open psd files. The error message I get when I open illustrator is "Error Loading Plugins. PhotoshopImport.aip"
Is there a fix for this? I cannot afford to upgrade my CS4 at this time.

Thanks Larry - the issue is that I need to keep all of the layers (there are a lot of them) and when I save as pdf it flattens the image. Is there no way to be able to open PSD files now that I upgraded to Yosemite?

Aligning keyframes in the Timeline (After Effects)

I was trying to align some existing keyframes in several layers with each other. I was surprised that I could align objects in the composition but not in the timeline. So I did some searching. I found something that might help, but I don't think it's the complete answer. I think it would be great to get other's opinions / suggestions for a better way.
I followed this process:
Open the keyframed layers in the timeline
Selected all of the keyframes
Clicked the Graph Editor button
Set the Snap option (magnet button on the bottom of the Graph Editor)
Manually slide the desired keyframes to line up together
I've seen other suggestions for scripts or cutting and pasting keyframes. Though these should work, it sure would be great if I could select several keyframes and tell them to center-align, left-align or right-align.
Does anyone know of this ability in AE?

I suppose this would be doable with a script, but off the bat I'm not aware of one that aligns keyframes in the manner you describe.

Can't compile with any layers hidden on timeline

Can someone explain what could possibly be going on?
Running CS4 I have a .fla that was compiling fine yesterday. Today I made some slight additions and it wouldn't compile, giving errors saying that various things were undefined. I was starting to go nuts until finally I made all layers in the timeline visible and compiled again. Now it compiles fine.
Just in case it was something Flash itself I created a new file, hid some layers and compiled and it was fine. So it's not the application, just this particular file.
What could be doing this? Why can't I compile with hidden layers?

This happened to me a while ago!
It's annoying.. somewhere in the publish settings theres a checkbox marked 'dont export hidden frames' and if it's checked it'll cause this to happen.

Mouse problems and black lines in the timeline

Hi, I recently bought Premier Elements 9 and updated it after the installation. When I try to open a new project, my mouse is moving around fine, but when i click on the different options nothing happens. I have to move around using my keyboard, and that's a pain compared to using just the mouse. I have a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse with the latest drivers and a Dell XPS 8100 w/ATI HD 5670, 4 GB RAM, lots of free disk space, Windows 7. When i finally manage to open a new projekt the timeline blanks when i move my mouse inside it making it impossible to move stuff around. My mouse works fine in the working space, but when a dialog box opens, it won't let me click on the different options, so I have to use Tab an Enter to make my selections. Does anybody know what my problem is and how to fix it? (I have downloaded and installed all the latest drivers)

As a test, can you by-pass the Logitec SetPoint driver and choose one of the generic MS mouse drivers?
I have an older Logitec wireless mouse and keyboard (replaced by a USB keyboard), and my wireless mouse works fine without SetPoint.
Going back, there were some issues with some SetPoint drivers, and also some MS InteliPoint drivers. For those "bad drivers," going with the MS generic fixed things, until a new Logitec (or InteliPoint) driver came out.
Also, I have seen some mouse issues, when I had several non-editing apps, like MS Outlook also open. Some apps. really steal CPU cycles, even if not active, but minimized. Just something to keep in the back of your mind.

PS - also check for any video, and audio driver updates. Go to Dell, or nVidia, or ATI, and Realtek for the audio, and check. Video drivers can cause some very odd issues, and part of yours seem to be display - the black lines.

What version are you using? Were you editing inside a project, or did you open a clip into the timeline?

Managing which projects are in the timeline.

I'm sure the answer to this is trivial, except that I can't find it. (FCP7 guy finally coming to X)
I open a project in the timeline. Good. I open a second project in the timeline and I get the back & forward arrows to select which one to see. I open another project and I can control-click on the arrows to select which one to see.
But how do I CLOSE a project that is open in the timeline when I have too many open at once? I've done the basic search of the manual and the forum but can't figure this one out.
So the question is really this: IF three or more projects are open in the timeline, how do I close one?

I was not about to suggest compounds or storylines - though come to think of it... just kidding :-)
I understand what you are asking for, but I don't think there is currently such an option.
You can use the "Provide Feedback" command in the application itself to make a feature request.
I would think that going back and forth to erase items from the project navigation history might in the end be a bit clunky, though.
What I was going to suggest, though, is that if this is some kind of template, like a title, it would probably make sense just to create your own and have it there in the Titles (or Effects, or Generators, as may be more appropriate).
For example, if always do the same kind of modifications to a title, like changing font, size, position on screen, etc, then it makes sense to have your own version with all your settings as wanted, instead of doing the same changes over and over.
That assumes that you have Motion, or can have someone with Motion creating that title for you
(you only need Motion to *create* custom titles, effects, etc, NOT to use them)

Open multi-layered PSD & always work on original?

I have two problems with new Aperture.
1) In Lightroom I was used to drag a PSD-File on the Photoshop icon and Photoshop openeded my PSD like I saved it with all my layers and preferences. If I do that in Aperture I just get a small and one-layered version of it. So I always have to click on "show in finder" and then I can open my PSD file from there. Can I change that somehow? I just want to open my original, mulit-layered PSD-file in Photoshop out of Aperture without anychanges or copies.
2) Can I turn these "working copies" ("Arbeitskopien" in german) off somehow? I always want to work on my original photographs and PSD-files without an extra copy of the file whenever I do something.

Select Photoshop as your external editor and PSD as the external editor file format under Preferences->Export. Then select the photo, right-click, edit with Photoshop. This will not create an extra copy of any PSD in the library.
Selecting an orignal RAW-photo will always create a PSD, since Photoshop is unable to read the adjustments Aperture made. This behaviour is probably different from Lightroom, because LR and PS use the same RAW-engine.

Sorry, no. (It was probably done as a mechanism to prevent crashing. PS Touch supports up to 12 layers vs. the hundreds (theoretically thousands) available in desktop Photoshop.)
You can, of course, do the reverse; open a PS Touch project exported as PSD or PSDX in Photoshop with layers intact.

What is the brand/model/settings of the camera recording your video?

For the Frame Rate, was it really 29.97 frames per second and you rounded it off to 29 frames per second? Or,
is the frame rate really 29 frames per second?
If the properties that you just posted are representative of your source file, what project preset did you or the
project set for the project preset? If you are not sure, please tell us the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size,
and Pixel Aspect Ratio under Edit Menu/Project Settings/General.
Still having problems - haven't been able to edit project.
