Opening Quicktime Files no longer launches Quicktime Application

I recently did an 'Archive and Install' after the latest version of Quicktime started to cause me problems. The 'Archive and Install' took me back to Quicktime 7.2. After updating the QT ap I am now back to Quicktime version 7.3.1 on OS X 10.4.10.
The problem now is that when I attempt to open a Quicktime file by double clicking on it, it will not open (If the Quicktime player is not open at the time it won't even launch). As a workaround, I am opening Quicktime files by using the 'Open' command directly from the Quicktime player menu.
While I am still able to get work done, navigating through multiple folders from the Quicktime Player menu is a huge pain. Any ideas on what went wrong and how to get things back to 'normal'?

Reinstall QT v7.3.1 from the full installer, repair permissions & restart your computer. See if that resolves the issue.

  • Chrome and Firefox no longer launch quicktime

    Hi,
    I tried to watch some trailers at apple.com. The larger ones which are .mov files no longer automatically launch quicktime when I click the link.
    I can copy the link, then go to quicktime and say open URL, that works fine, so files and quicktime are OK.
    .mov and mp4 are both file types are both set to open with quicktime
    This worked a couple of weeks ago, I have not changed anything except for some apple software updates.
    Any idea what is happening?
    Chrome shows up to date version 13.0.782.220
    Firefox 6.0.1
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

    I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one having this issue lol.  I was starting to get really frustrated with this.
    I took my Macbook to the Apple Store for another issue and asked the rep about this.  He simply implied that it was probably a business decision on Apple's part.  He even downloaded Firefox on one of his Macbooks while I was right there with Lion installed, same thing happened, it wouldn't launch Quicktime.

  • Can I get the name of the jnlp file used to launch my application

    Does anyone know if there is a way to get the name of the jnlp file used to launch the currently executing code?
    Essentially in the code below a way to set myAppFileName without hard coding the string. i.e. code could exist in a utility class used by many jnlp applications.
                String myAppFileName = "myApp.jnlp";
                BasicService bs = (BasicService) ServiceManager.lookup("javax.jnlp.BasicService");
                String url = bs.getCodeBase() + myAppFileName;Seems reasonable that if the jnlp API's know about the codebase that maybe it could hold the file name somewhere too? I hope, I hope ....
    Thanks

  • I can't set Firefox to open PHP files with Firefox (in preferences- applications-php files) Firefox won't accept anything but "always ask" and Preview. I want to preview php files in Bbedit and that requires that Firefox can open it.

    with an open php file in Bbedit (Macintosh) it was possible to preview appearance by chosing "Preview in.." in Bbedit's "Markup" menu. This called Firefox to open and display the file. Now, doing this continually repeats a "Open with (choose)" request.

    Unfortunately this solution doesn't work for me for local files (on my computer). Still I can only choose to open in Notepad or "other". It seems that I can select Firefox, but it won't do anything when I actually select it.... I did NOT have this problem with the previous version of Firefox (before 6.0.2). The only thing that's changed, is the Firefox update from yesterday (September 28th, 2011).

  • Quicktime files won't launch - ask for an obsolete version of the QT app

    I just bought a MacBook Pro (OSX 7.3), copied everything over to it, including apps, from my Powerbook G4 (non intel; OSX 10.5.8).  Now none of the mp3s on my MacBook will open when I click on them;  the error message states that I must have Quicktime 7.2 which is not on this machine (and indeed it's not).   The MP3s will however launch from within the Quicktime 10.1 app that came in when I updated the MacBook Pro software.
    So  - how can I convince my MacBook to make Quicktime 10.1 my default mp3 player app (and not QT 7.2)?

    That worked - many thanks.
    But the Get Info drop-down selection box was still headed by  "Quicktime" with the old logo (v7.2) as default.  In the list of alternative apps below was Quicktime with the new logo (v10.1).  I made that the new default as you suggested, so all's well.
    But evidently my computer still thinks v 7.2 is around (and v 7.1 and 7.6) - maybe in a library somewhere - since they're still appearing as choices in that Get Info dropdown menu.
    No problem I suppose, but curious.

  • Double clicking a file won't launch the application.

    I have a problem with Quark 4.11 and Acrobat 5.0.
    When I try to launch the apps by double clicking on my file icon, Acrobat tries to launch but does nothing and Quark gives me a -39 error.
    This happens on all files.
    File I create and files that I receive from customers, so I know that it is not a single damaged file.
    Acrobat has been doing this for several months but quark just started 2 weeks ago. Quark started doing it just after I rebuilt my desktop.
    I should mention that I can open files from within the application or if I drag the file icon on top of the application icon.
    Short of reinstalling the apps, whan can I do?
    Can I zap the pram?
    G4 AGP Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hello Jack,
    In addition to advice already offered I would try allocating more memory to the 2 applications in question. If unsure how to do this...post back.
    Secondly, do a sherlock for Quark.....see if you have several alias of the original app. I would try to only have 1 or 2 aliases.
    Try the memory thing first......Error -39 is a ROM related error. It pertains to "end of file error". I must admit I don't know what that is.
    Also you could try closing a few apps. Then see if the files open the job correctly. This is not a fix but would indicate a memory issue. Lastly be sure you have enough free space on the HD. It could be time to back up and remove some items on the HD in order to create room....HTH........Jim

  • Any idea why this desktop file won't launch the application?

    I have been trying to get this desktop file to work so I can launch epsxe faster. However, it does not do anything when I try to run it. Mind you I do have the permissions and group set correctly. Here it is:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Name=ePSXe
    Comment=Enhanced PSX emulator
    Exec=/opt/epsxe/1.9.0/epsxe
    Icon=/opt/epsxe/logo.jpg
    Terminal=false
    Type=Application
    Categories=Game;

    You REALLY do have permissions set correctly? Mind posting a "ls -la /opt/exsxe/1.9.0/"? Have you tried setting Terminal to ture? You could run it in the background with &. Also, have you tried reading the manual pages for your PSX emulator?

  • Quicktime File Association problems

    I have two machines, a Intel G5 running OS10.5.8 (Quicktime 7.6.2) and a G4 tower running OS9.2.2 (Quicktime 5). Whenever I create Quicktime videos (.mov) and transfer them via USB they are unrecognized by the higher OS and Quicktime. The only way to access them is to bring up the G4 in target mode on the G5 and use them from that hard drive. Copying them to the G5 and ejecting the G4 HD results in the Quicktime files not being recognized.

  • Change All / Get Info issue. How to set which application  opens a file?

    Hello,
    I would like to be able to set which application opens a specific file, but cannot get the 'Change all' option in the get info to stick, or to have scvope beyond the immediate folder. For example: whenever I download an.xml file and try to open it the application it defaults to is 'Property List editor' - so I have to go into 'get info' and set the application that I want to use to open the file. Let's say - Textmate. That file will then remain set, for the length of that session anyway - but clicking 'Change all' will not mean that the next file downloaded will default to 'Textmate', or that any .xml files outside the folder will open in Textmate. I have to set them all manually, which gets to be a drag.
    I once had a little open source app. that I used to set the preferences as to which application opened a specific suffix - which worked with some, some of the time... but after a clean install I lost it - and can't remember what it was called. Anyway, it didn't entirely solve the problem, only lessened it.

    I know that what I posted may have been what you have been doing, but wanted to double check.
    I don't know to what application you are referring but application/file type association is done by Launch Services. Potentially this can become corrupted. You can use Onyx (free) utility to rebuild LS, but in doing so you will lose all non-default associations.
    As with any problems, I would also make sure you have run disk utility to verify and repair your drive, and repair permissions on your computer, before doing any other actions. It's surprising what that can clear up. You can slo just try starting in Safe mode, then restarting normally and see if that helps.

  • Audio and video not in sync when exporting to Quicktime file

    I use a digital camera to shoot video, which is in .avi format. I then import the clips into IMovie HD (selecting all the clips and dragging all at the same time into IMovie). If I play the video from beginning to end in IMovie, the audio and video line up fine. But, when I 'share' to Quicktime file, the longer the video is, the more out-of-sync the audio and video become.
    I didn't have this problem when I used a mini-DV cam and imported using a firewire cable (in real time).
    Any ideas as to how to get the audio to sync up with the video once it's shared as a Quicktime file? I've tried .mp4 and .mov, and I have the same problem.

    Anything here help?
