Opening .rar files

I tried opening a .rar file with no luck. What program should I get to open these zipped files. I want something free. Or maybe there is something on my iMac that I'm not aware of.
Regards, Pat

There's a freebie here I've used. Has worked for my use so far (for the few times I've needed to open a .rar file). rar is rarely used on the Mac, so there's little support out there for it.
Stuffit also opens RAR files. The item linked to above is the only way to create RAR archives on the Mac. That is, from the Terminal as a command line only application. There has been no one yet that has written a RAR utility to create such files from the GUI that I've been able to find.

  • Open .rar file in nokia 5800 ??????????????

Hi there, I have one problem with my nokia 5800. When i am trying to install .rar file in my mobile, it says the phone is not  compatible with this file. So that why i am not able to install any theme in my mobile. So someone pls help me.

petrib, you obviously haven't downloaded many themes in recent years.
Most popular and quality thememakers (even one of the most well known, pizero) out there now distribute themes in ZIPs or RARs because quite often there is more than one version of the theme (changed icons and default icons). The zip/rar keeps the versions together when other sites link to the themes.
Personally I open the zip/rar on a PC then send the required sis/sisx files to the phone using bluetooth.
There is one application that allows you to open rar files on the phone but it requires signing and I am not sure if it can be open signed or not.

.exe is a Windows only Executable, and can't be opened on a Mac, unless you have Windows installed.

  • FIREFOX OPENS RAR FILES INSTEAD OF DOWNLOAD

I'm using Firefox 21. When I try to click in a rar file link, firefox opens the file instead of download.
I've tried to change in "Tools->Options-> Aplications" the actions taken by the browser depending of file types, but there is no case for rar files and I cannot add it.
    Anyone can help?
    Thanks in advance

This can happen if the server isn't configured properly and sends the file as text/plain.
You should be able to verify this in Tools > Page Info > General
*Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden "Menu Bar" temporarily.
In such a case you can't left-click a link, but need to use the right-click context menu and use "Save Link As"

  • Can Stuff It Expander be used to open .rar files?

I've got some .rar files on my computer. When I try to open them it asks me to tell it what application to use to open it. I thought the Stuff It Expander opens those, but I don't know how to find it in the Finder.
I don't have this problem with Zip files, it automatically uses the Stuff It Expander to open it.

Not the free version of Stuffit. You can use The Unarchiver or any of the numerous free utilities that can handle RAR archives - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How to unzip/open .rar file?

    Hello guys,
I have just received a download I have purchased. (I have purchased audio files for film score editing, so the resulting files should be audio files).
But the downloaded file I have received is 700 mb .rar file.
When I double click it, it tries to open DivX converter, but I only had a trial version, which is now expired.
Is there any other way of unzipping/opening this .rar file? Ot is DivX the only application?
Thank you so much for your help.

Hello, I am not positive but there may be a command line option to un-rar items. I use an App called Macpar deluxe
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/Site/MacPAR_deLuxe.html
From the menu bar of Macpar, choose process the unrar. It will then let you search for the file. If you have a .ro1, .ro2..... it will highlight the start rar.

  • Stuffit 10 opens rar file to folder..... now at dead end....... anyone?

Stuffit Expander 10 opened a rar file but then after opening the created folder, I click on install and/or setup and stuffit seems to be the wrong program to open folder. I can't seem to choose anything that will open this file.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've never seen a .rar with Mac software inside. It's mainly a Windows archive file format (even if Stuffit can decompress it). So, go back to whereever you downloaded it from and check the system requirements...if it doesn't say Mac (in any variety) you probably can't install it.
The primary archive formats you'll see for mac software are:
    .dmg (disk image/OS X)
    .img (disk image/classic)
    .bin (bin hex/classic)
    .hqx (stuffit/classic)
    .sit (stuffit/both)
    .sitx (stuffit/OS X)
For command-line/Terminal/X11 software (a lot of which is compile-yourself) you might also see:
    .tar (tape archive...not actually compressed)
    .bz2 (bzip 2, a unix-type zip file)
.gz (gzip, another unix-type zip file)
    .tar.bz2
    .tar.gz
For just plain documents, but not usually software you'll sometimes see .zip (from winzip, but it's a popular cross platform compression sceme).
But .rar? I know of it, but have never seen it on a Mac. Also, there's a vulnerability in the .rar compression scheme that can spit out a virus when being decompressed during a virus scan. The virus will not likely infect a Mac, but it can mean your files can become a carrier if you pass the affected one to a PC.
In summary, stay away from .rar's

  • Needing to open RAR files.

I am needing to download some files that are .rar files, but I cannot get them to open on my Mac. Am I not doing something correctly or do I need a special program to open these types of files? Thanks for any advice.

You need Stuffit. It will open most compressed formats, and they offer a free trial, if you just need it for a couple .rar files.

  • Problem opening rar files

I checked various posts on this topic and downloaded both the Unarchiver and Unrarx and loaded them as applications. When I drag a rar file to either of these applications, I get a message
    For the Unarchiver:
The contents of the file Cifob.rar cannot be extracted with this program.
    For Unrarx:
Encrypted file: CRC failed in /Users/carmeljacques/Desktop/Cifob.rar (password incorrect ?) No files to extract
For the Unarchiver I made sure I had selected rar from the "archive formats" list. For unrarx I tried various passwords. I have tried several rar files and consistently get the same message. Can somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
    IMac   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi Carmel,,
Encrypted file: CRC failed in /Users/carmeljacques/Desktop/Cifob.rar (password incorrect ?) No files to extract
In all un-archiving when a message appears with (password incorrect ?) would suggest that the file is encrypted with a 'password'.
The password is created by the archiver and has nothing to do with your own system passwords. The creator of the archive - if they are allowing you to un-archive they must provide you with the password which must be entered by clicking the appropriate button in UnRAR prior to dropping the file onto the UnRAR software.
Methinks you may not have the appropriate password?

  • Can't open .rar files

I just downloaded a podcast in .rar for the second time but it won't unpack. It just says "the file does not appear to be compressed or encoded". ??? I have StuffIt, so why doesn't it work?

Actually, the message "the file does not appear to be compressed or encoded" makes it sound like it's not a .rar file at all. But rather a video file with an improper extension. If you just change the extension to .wmf (or whatever format it's in), does it run?
