Opening RAW files in older CS3

I have an older version, PS3 Extended. I have always opened RAW files with no problem. Recently, a friend with a newer camera and newer version of PS gave me some RAW files to open, and my CS3 says "Could not complete your request because it's the wrong kind of document". I am wondering if the problem could be that I have an old version of PS? Thanks.

You need the DNG Converter to open a batch of newer raw files. If you need to do this regularly, you might need to think about upgrading or using Lightroom.

Couldn't open RAW files in Bridge Cs3

Hi,
the RAW files (CR2) cannot be opened/developed with using Bridge CS3. When I double click the file (CR2) in Bridge, it just gave this prompt in Photoshop, "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
I used to be able to open Raw files in my friend's G5 using Bridge. When I double click the file, it will automatically open the Canon Camera Raw with settings for me to adjust before I develop the picture. However when I tried on my own computer, it came out the prompt I mentioned above.
Please advise what is the problem with my Bridge. Do I need to reintall the whole of Adobe suite?

first check again the right location of (only one!) ACR plug in (see post 3 of this thread for details)
Then quit Bridge, in user library go to preferences and manual trash the plist file for Bridge (com.adobe.bridge2.plist), restart again with option key and again reset prefs.
If this is still not working create a new user account and check if Bridge is working correctly in this new user, if so your user account is corrupt and you should do maintenance for the OS (Archive and install).
If still no luck go again to the user library/cache/Adobe/BridgeCS3/cache. This cache file can grow to the enormous portions, check the size and if you wish make a copy for back up. Then delete this whole cache file by dragging it to the trash. Again delete plist file and again restart option to refresh prefs. By deleting the cache file you will need to recache all your folders so it is a very hard way but it worked for me several times.

Opening RAW files with Bridge CS3

When I try to open a RAW file from Bridge CS3 it defaults to Mac Preview and does not open Photoshop Elements 6 RAW converter. If I open a RAW file outside of Bridge it work fine. Bridge requires the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw to be installed. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4581 Adobe states that this is the latest version of camera raw compatible with PSE-6 Mac. Others may have additional information.
As to the issue of defaulting to Apple software, this issue is usually a configuration problem wherein certain file extensions are granted permissin to be summarily opened by a given program. ((Right clicking any given file, then choosing "open with", and selecting a given program is a work around, but to avoid this step, you need to reconfigure your program settings.)) This is the Windows file path/solution, I am not familiar with Mac. I am confident that the issus is the same

You need Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). Go to the download page and download the last vesion for CS3, believe it was 4.6.
Be aware that each version of Photoshop has its own series of ACR.

That would require ACR 6.3 which shipped with Photoshop CS5. Your best bet is to convert your Raw files to dng format and then they should open in CS3.

I have never had troubles with photoshop before, but since I installed windows 7 and reinstalled CS3, Photoshop is no longer able to open camera raw files! When I attempt to open one a window pops up stating: Could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document. What on earth is going on?! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I downloaded Photoshop CS3 and when I open a raw image a screen called "Photoshop Raw Options" appears. It asks the dimensions, channels, and header sizes. I don't know what to fill in those boxes. I work on a Mac. Help

When I removed CS2 the procedure also removed Adobe Gamma. This is a little utility that enables you to do a very basic monitor calibration. I had been using it, so this caused a little concern at first. But then I used a program that came with my video card so I haven't had a need for Adobe Gamma. Other than that, I had no problems.
Be aware that Camera Raw is updated about four times each year. You need to watch the forum because it is a good place to find out about the updates. Alternatively, in Photoshop if you go to the help menu there is an option to check for updates. It might be a good idea to run that about every three months. If there is an update available it will be installed for you.

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3. When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files. I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file. Sorry, yes this is Microsoft Excel. The Microsoft XP has Excel files denoted as xl, the later versions of Microsoft Excel are denoted as xls files. The later verions of Microsoft Excel open the xl files OK, does Excel for Mac not able to do this?

CS3 - Cannot open RAW files

I am new to the forum. I just purchased a new PC w/Windows 7 (64 bit). CS3 was reinstalled on the new PC. Now I cannot open RAW files. In the simple and short form, what happens with the ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module is that it gets updated with regularity, to accommodate the camera mfgr's. changes for their newer models. That ACR works within the host program, such as Ps, PsElements, Lightroom, etc.. At a point, Adobe ceases to support older host program versions. When that happens, the user has a few options:
Upgrade the host program version
Use another host program, such as PsElements or Lightroom
Use the free DNG converter, per Curt's suggestion. That is not host program dependent

Can't open RAW files in CS4

I recently bought the 5d mk2 and I cannot open RAW files. Had no problem with my 20D but 5D does not work. Tried to put new plug in into the plugin folder but it says that it is not recognised by windows or there is an error in it. Anyone help?

The only other thing I can think of is that when you installed 5.7 you put the older version in a location where it should not have been. If you are keeping an older copy it cannot be anywhere in the Adobe folder structure. It's best to just get rid of it completely. You can always download another copy if necessary. I know, this is a dumb question, but are you certain you are using Photoshop CS4?

ACR 6.7 would be for an older product, PS-CS5 or PSE10 or PRE10.
What does Help / About Plug-ins… / Camera Raw… show in PS-CC for a version for ACR and is there more than one version of ACR in the Help / About Plug-in list. Help / About Plug-in is what I’d do on Windows; I’m not sure if the menu path is the same on a Mac or not.
