Opening Raw files saved as DNG?

Having had some great assistance in the Elements HowTo forum I can now load Raw files to Organizer and edit them with ACR 5.2 ( I'm shooting them with a Panasonics FZ28)When I save them I get two options .DNG or .dng
Whichever one I use (and I'm not sure what the difference is?) I cannot open them again as DNG or dng files in organizer for subsequent selection and processing.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
ps I'm using Elements 6 with Windows XP

If we are both talking about Programs/Photoshop Elements 6.0/Plug-ins/File Format as the correct location ,Yes. If there is a separate plug-in for opening a DNG file as opposed to opening a Raw file into the Organizer and subsequently Editor I'm not so sure then.
Following Barbara and Paige's advice I had downloaded ACR 5.2 as a zipped folder ,moved the original Camera Raw 8BI file out, unzipped the folder and moved 5.2's 8BI file into its place. Should I have moved/downloaded anything else?
ps I have tried opening the files from Windows, right clicking and looking for ACR in the Open With list but it isn't listed.

I can't open RAW files from new Sony Alpha a6000 camera in PSE 11 camera raw editor. Is there an update that will allow me to do this or do I need to always use DNG convertor?

You would need to update to PSE 12, or just keep using the DNG converter. Your camera requires ACR 8.4, which isn't compatible with PSE 11. It's also not compatible with PSE 12 if you are running Vista or XP.

  • Why does Bridge open raw files (ndg) in Raw window even though the 'Open in Photoshop' option is...

I don't understand why in Bridge there are 2 choices, -1- Open raw and -2- Open in Photoshop and yet both choices give you the same result--The raw window opens  with PS below it. After having worked on my raw NEF files I save it to dng. My thinking behind this, is that I alreay have done what was needed and would now like to start working on it within Photoshop. It seems that the only way to automatically open it directly within PS is if I save it as a tiff, psd or jpg. But since this is not what I want to do then why must I add extra steps as opposed to just opening it hwere I want. I mean the 2 choices are there, so why not do what it is being asked?

If I may step in in this discussion, I always use DNG but never have used ACR to achieve this result.
As Curt stated the changes made in ACR to a Raw file (or for that matter a DNG file) are undoable without problems.
My workflow (using Canon CR2 but that is not important, let's say a dSLR generated Raw File) is to use Photodownloader in Bridge (not perfect by far but still the best and easiest way for me).
I connect my CF card using a card reader and let Adobe Photodownloader do the work.
    Inhere I use several options:
    - convert the CR2 file to a DNG
    - back up the original CR2 on a separate disk
    - rename the DNG to yyyymmdd (shot date) and sequence number
    - add a metadata template for copyright to all the DNG files.
Sorting out the keepers I open the DNG in ACR and either hit Open (for open directly in PS) or use save as Tiff or PSD depending on next step in development or simply hit Done to apply changes and leave it for later use.
The advantage of having both ACR in PS and Bridge is huge. The only difference between both is that by default PS has the Open Button selected and Bridge (open in Camera Raw) has the Done button selected, thats all.
But here is the good part, you can use both simultaneously! For example have PS in film strip mode with multiple files selected and when changes are ready hit Save as start the process but locks up PS itself. Switch to Bridge and use Open in Camera Raw and start with the next job while ACR PS is still running in the background
When I open a DNG in PS using ACR in either PS or Bridge I continue developing with actions and fine tune with layer mask, brush etc etc.
Sometimes use Save As for PSD with the layers still active (huge files) when needing to revisit or not quite ready. But mostly I use an action to flatten the files and save as PSD.
Both DNG and PSD are ending up in my archive, my clients receive whet they want, PSD, Tiff but mostly jpeg and resized.
When having the job finished and every once in a while I clear out the original CR2 files from Back up because in all the years I use DNG (at least 5 years) I never had to use the original CR2 instead of the DNG that is thoroughly backed up as is the original PSD.
But since disk space is cheap you can choose to keep them.
An other option is to include the original raw file in the DNG but I would not recommend that because the file size is getting almost twice as big.
The biggest plus side for me using DNG is that the xmp data is written directly to the file while original CR2 or NEF needs an xmp side car file next to it with this data.
However saving changes to metadata is taking a bit longer to a DNG then to an XMP side car file, depending on system resources and time this never been a real problem for me

  • Cant open RAW files from Nikon D300S

I have a Nikon D300S.  I can't open RAW files in Adobe CS4.  Screen message is 'Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document'.  I understood from this Adobe website that the fix was to download Camera Raw 5_5.  I've done that and the same screen message appears.  What am I doing wrong / what do I need to do to fix the problem.   If you can list a step by step process in the plainest terms possible then that would be appreciated.  Thanks

Firstly thanks to all who are trying to assist.  I appreciate your spending time on this.   Hopefully this additional info will help:
    (1) the camera is a Nikon D300s.  I'm not aware of any model details beyond this   It was bought c9 months ago.
    (2) I bought Adobe CS4 before buying the Nikon D300s.   I've used CS4 to convert RAW files from my other cameras - a Nikon D2H and a Minolta Dimage - without any bother at all.
    (3) CS4 is loaded onto my Windows based PC in to the Windows 'Downloads' folder.  I'm not using any Mac computers.
    (4) The procedure I followed to upload the Adobe files was:
    (a)  I clicked 'Help' - About Plug-in - Camera Raw.  Info on screen says 'Version 5.0.0.178
    (b)  In looking at the Adobe support web pages (I can't now find which one it was) it indidated I should check for updates.  I downloaded and saved  Photoshop_11.0.2_mul_AdobeUpdate.  Its filed in my 'Downloads' folder in Windows.
    (c) I used the Adobe search engine using an enquiry "CS4 Camera Raw Updates'.  This produced a page with box at the top and 2 headings 'Digital camera raw file support' and 'Adobe camera raw and DNG convertor downloads'.  Under this second heading there are choices to click for Widows and Mac OS.  I selected Windows.  The result produces a list of Updates / Programmes.   I selected Adobe DNG Convertor 5.5 update and Camera Raw 5.5 update and downloaded both into my Windows 'Downloads' folder.  I chose these because according to the list info they were relevanf for the Nikon D300s.  I attempted to open a photo taken from the D300s in Raw and the photo would not open - the usual '......not the right document' message.
    (d) from Forum contributions I then deleted version 5.5 of both files downloaded at (c) above and installed version 5.7 and then tried to view the Raw image again, Same result.  This is the up to date position as at this post.
Have I missed a step somewhere? eg should there be a step forcing a link from the downloaded updates to CS4 or do the downloads automatically link to CS4 when the download is complete?
Any furhter help you can offer is appreciated.  Thanks.

  • I am unable to open raw files from my Canon T1i in Adobe Camera Raw of my version CS3 of Photoshop.  I have tried to update my ACR by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe website but I am still unable to open raw files, just JPEG.  Is there a way to use

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3.  When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files.  I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file.  I spoke with a representative from Canon who said that I could not update CS3 and that I should subscribe to the Cloud.  I would prefer to use my CS3, if possible.  Can anyone advise me what to do?

The T1i was first supported by Camera Raw 5.4 which is only compatible with CS4 and later

  • Unable to open RAW files in CS6 after update

    Hi all,
I have Photoshop CS6 and have been able to open my D4 Raw files with no issues using the Camera Raw version 7.1 plugin.
Yesterday I upgraded my Mac OS from Snow Leopard to Yosemite (a big jump I agree) and proceeded to update Photoshop to the latest version as well as installing Adobe DNG Converter 8.8.
I am apparently still using the same 7.1 plugin version as I always have but I am now no longer able to open any RAW files through Photoshop as it displays a message saying 'files not recognised' when I try to open them.
Have I skipped too many updates? Do the latest Photoshop CS6 updates leave me unable to open RAW files? Am I being pushed down the CC route?
Could anybody offer any help at all as I have a wedding to edit but cannot open any files!!! Stress!!!
I backed up my system through Time Machine before I did the update but im not sure if I restore that I will still have Yosemite OS running.
Any help or advice really is appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Phil

Camera RAW should be at version 8.8 for CS6

  • Photoshop Elements 9 and cannot open Raw files from my Canon EOS 1000D camera.

I am using Photoshop Elements 9 on a Windows 7 based PC and would like to know why I cannot open Raw files produced by my Canon EOS 1000D camera.
I have checked the version of the plug in as 6.5 for raw files which is supposed to open .cr2 files and should be compatible according to Adobe site info.
    any ideas for next move.
    Mick

    Hi,
According to all of Adobe's charts, the Canon 1000D should be supported by the basic PSE 9 even without updates. When you said you checked the camera raw version in PSE, did you do that by going to the Help menu and selecting About plugins -> Camera raw?
The Canon 1200D requires ACR 8.4 which is only compatible with PSE 12 - so for PSE 10 your brother would need the DNG converter.
I can't find a sample raw file to try (I do have PSE 9). If you want to upload a sample file to dropbox and give me access, I could try it on my system.
Have you tried opening one of your files on your brothers system?

  • How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

    Andy,
In the simple and short form, what happens with the ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module is that it gets updated with regularity, to accommodate the camera mfgr's. changes for their newer models. That ACR works within the host program, such as Ps, PsElements, Lightroom, etc.. At a point, Adobe ceases to support older host program versions. When that happens, the user has a few options:
    Upgrade the host program version
Use another host program, such as PsElements or Lightroom
Use the free DNG converter, per Curt's suggestion. That is not host program dependent
Glad that the DNG Converter works for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How do I open raw files from my Canon 6D in Photoshop CS5.1?

Just tried to open raw files from my Canon 6D in Photoshop CS5.1. An error message appeared: "
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.
Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information." Is there a simple solution?

You cannot, nor will you ever be able to open your Canon raw files directly in CS5.1.  Your camera model requires at least ACR 7.3 which only works with CS6, or Lightroom 4.3.  There will be no further updates for CS 5.1 ever.
Your choices are (1) to upgrade to CS6, or (2) to download the latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter, currently 7.4, and convert your Canon raw files to raw DNG files that you can then open in your CS5.1.
You should also know that the rendering in ACR 7.4 is far superior tou the raw conversion in ACR 6.x, so you would be leaving a lot of image quality on the table if you go the (free) DNG Conversion route.

  • Unable to open raw files from canon d70 in elements 12 help

hi. just purchased elements 12 as i was told it would open my canon d70 raw files. have installed elements 12 and done the update from the update box in elements but still it wont open raw files. any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is probably a way to hack your system into work with ACR 8.3 using the plug-in ZIP file from this page and copying it manually to the specific folder where it needs to go:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/camera-raw-84-support-policy.html#To%20run%20Came ra%20Raw%20on%20Mac%20OS%2010.6,%20Windows%20XP,%20or%20Windows%20Vista,%20remove%20the%20 8.4%20plug-in%20and%20manually%20reinstall%20Camera%20Raw%208.3
Download the 32-bit version of ACR 8.3 from the page, above.
Unzip it to the file Camera Raw.8bi.
Copy that new Camera Raw.8bi over the top of the existing one in this folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 12\File Formats
Then install the DNG Converter 8.3 as mentioned in the page, above.

  • PSCS3 10.0 Extended/Camera RAW 431 updted--can't open RAW files

    Windows Vista 64 Ultimate
    CS3 10 Extended
I manually installed the new RAW 431 update per instructions:
To install with Adobe Creative Suite 3 or Photoshop CS3:
    1. Exit Photoshop CS3.
    2. Open My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
    4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
    Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
I might add too that in Vista 64 Ultimate OEM version the file location above is INCORRECT. In fact, the location doesn't exist.
    The file is located in:
    Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
I re-downloaded the file twice to make sure it wasn't corrupted and checked the file size on both versions, which was identical.
When I try to open any raw file, even those converted using the new DNG converter, I get the message "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."
Reinstalling Camera Raw 4.0 that shipped with CS3 solves the problem.
I've purged every cache Adobe and Bridge has with no solution.
[BTW, before I installed the 431 version of "Camera Raw.8bi" I renamed the original version "Camera Raw.8bi.BAK" and left it in the same directory. I reversed this method when going back to the original 4.0 version.]
    Thanks for those who help.

Any ideas or do I need to move to another software to open my Canon files? Also, converting to DNG gives the same error message. 431 is not working on my system.
I'm not passing judgment here, but I need to get back to work on my Canon 1DS MKIII files, and Adobe isn't cutting the mustard any longer for us. If we can't get it working in the next day or two, I'll need suggestions on a RAW converter that will actually open RAW files.
