Opening resolution of a photo

I'm sorry to bring up basic questions...feel I have used photoshop for long enough to know these things...obviously not!!!
I am trying to piece together a mock magazine cover using photos and text.  If I open a photo it automatically sets it at 72pix/inch.  I understand that to print quality text, the resolution needs to be a lot more.  Is this photoshop settings or my camera?

How, exactly are you opening the photo and in what format is the photo (e.g., raw file, JPEG, etc.)?

  • What program do I need to change the resolution of a photo?

What program do I need to change the resolution of a photo that is currently a low-res .jpg? I previously had photoshop, but it did not transfer to my new Mac Lion - and it is too expensive to repurchase. Curious if there is there an alternative option? I cannot open hi-res files anymore, and would love a solution. Thanks!

  • Resolution of Imported Photos

I've just finished importing a whole ton of old photos from my old PC to my mac, they're sitting on my desktop. When I open them with Preview, they appear at their full resolution, problem free. As soon as I import them into iPhoto, the resolution suddenly drops to about 240x320.
How do I change the settings so that the resolution of these photos will remain as high as they were when taken?

First off, I should correct my error. The resolution is 270x360. Now when I import photos for some reason, they appear to be working at the regular resolution, but I still have a problem: here's what happened.
I ended up playing around with iPhoto (when I first tried to use it) deleting and re-importing photos multiple times to try to learn how to organize them properly. Once I thought I had them organized properly, I deleted the folders containing the files off my PC thinking that I was fine and dandy. iPhoto then refused to open any pictures because it couldn't locate them.
I realized that under preferences ("advanced" pane) the program was not set to copy files into the iPhoto library when they were imported. Even so, I could find all the photos in the library, it's just now they are at reduced resolution. I assume I just retrived the thumbnails from iPhoto and that my photos are gone? Is there a way to retreive them?

  • Resolution of New Photo

Using PS Elements 11 on Win 7 computer. Some photos I open are displayed at 72 ppi resolution. Other photos open at 180 or 300 ppi resolutions. What determines this? How can I specify the ppi resolution to always use when opening a photo.  Thanks.

    Normally, the camera determines this.
But, there is no point in changing the ppi when opening a photo. It is a totally meaningless waste of time. If you have a photo at 72ppi, and change that resolution to 300ppi, you have the exact same photo, not a pixel changes.
The only time the ppi might be useful is when printing, and even then, you don't really need to change it, you can simply specify the desired print size (e.g. 4x6 inches) and that's what you will get.

  • How do I tell the resolution of a photo in a PDF?

Newbie question: when I'm viewing a PDF, how do I tell the resolution of a photo? My current strategy is to open the PDF in PhotoShop, crop out the photo, and view the resolution. How do you do this in Acrobat? Thanks.

You can use Acrobat Pro's Preflight tool to give you that information. It's under the Advanced menu, it can also be found on the Prepress toolbar.
In the Preflight dialog there are several built-in profiles including one called "List all images" (expand the category called PDF Analysis). Double click that profile or select it from the list and click the execute button. In the results window, you can expand the item that says "Resolution of color and gray scale images is higher than 0". A list of all the color and grayscale images will be displayed as well as information about it. This includes the page it is on, dimensions, resolution, and colorspace. The profile name "List all bitmaps" will give you that info for bitmaps. There are several other profiles that will list images below a certain resolution, you can create your own profiles to customize it further.
Please note: depending on your document, you may need to increase the number of results so that all images will be listed. To do this, click on options in the Preflight dialog and select Preflight Preferences.

  • How do you change the resolution of a Photo?

In iPhoto, how to you reduce the resolution of a photo in order to reduce the file size? This makes it easier to email because of the smaller file size?

    Let's say I have a photo with a resolution of of 3264 x 2448 pixels.
Tat's not a measurement of resolution, that's the dimensions (length x breadth) of the photo, expressed in pixels.
Resolution is a vague term most used to describe the density of pixels - i.e the pixels per inch.
    1) I want to edit it and reduce the resolution to 1024 x 768 pixels.
No, you want to reduce the dimensions of the image to 1024 x 768
    2) Do this within iPhoto without using the export feature thereby keeping the edited photo in iPhoto?
You can't. It can only be done on export. Why? When you edit a photo iPhoto preserves the original and makes a copy of the file containing the edit. As most people reduce the dimensions, file size or resolution for a specific purpose (to upload it for instance), it's thought best to export it, upload it nd then trash it.
Of course, you can simply import the export back in, if you have a burning need of it in iPhoto.

I can see my thumbnails for my events in iphoto, but when I click to open the folder, no photos show up. However, when I hover over the thumbnail, it shows the flicker of images
that should be inside the folder, as well as # of images in each folder. It also occasionally says the following when I try to even open iphoto:  "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." So, I am scared to hit "upgrade" for fear I will never recover any of the images as the wording in this quote seems odd. The photos are not in the trash. Did I lose them all? Do you know if/how I can retrieve them?

    iPhoto 08?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list.  I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

Hi Ive moved photos but they appear as duplicates in iPhoto.   When you try and open them it says Photo can't be found.  I have thousands.  How do I get rid of these images?
Also I have many duplicate photos (from backups)  It would be great to be able to remove all duplicates at one time, like in Itunes.
    Can this be done?

You moved what photos from where and to where?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Can't open any of my photos in my iPhoto library anymore

I haven't been able to open any of my photos with iPhoto recently. They exist as photos in a separate folder on the HD. And when I tried to move them into iPhoto folder I get a message that the photos are not readable and yet I can view them in the Preview window.
It was working perfectly until this problem came up.
    Any clues anyone?
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I think I have the same problem. I can't upload pics from my camera any more either. The funny thing is, when I make a new account and log on to it, iPhoto works just fine. I'm pretty sure the whole problem started when I downloaded the latest updates a week ago or so. It kind of upsets me that these updates would mess things up and you'd think that Apple would of, or does know this. Do I need to reinstall iPhoto from disk? I bought my laptop in Jan. and my 90 tech support just expired, I guess all electronics bread right after the warranty.

    Hi,
The D810 requires Camera Raw 8.6 or later - the latest version that is compatible with Photoshop Elements 12 is Camera Raw 8.5 as far as I can see.
You need to either buy a new version of Photoshop Elements or use the free Adobe DNG converter.
