Opening Saved PDFs

When I save a PDF, say from a website or from an online class, I receive an error message when I go back later to open it.  The error is: "Adobe Reader could not open 'IECA_STI-Brochure-2014.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."
I have version 11.0.6 of Adobe Reader.  I used an Adobe Forum recently because I was not able to comment on PDFs that did allow me to save and reopen.  Based on the responses I realized that my version must not have loaded properly so I redownloaded and now I do have access to the "comments" section with the various icons to highlight or sticky note, etc...but most PDFs are unable to save.  Do I have to redownload again?? Is it still not fully functional?
Thanks,

I first checked that the brochure downloaded fine. Are you downloading to disk so you can open it or are you trying to open in your browser (if the latter, what browser -- not all use the Adobe plugin). The save you are talking about is a browser issue, not one from Acrobat. How are you trying to save -- from the browser save or the toolbar in the plugin?
For future questions about Reader, ask in the reader forum. Your current question is generic enough that the Acrobat forum is probably fine, but this is not the Reader forum and you will likely get better answers over there.

  • Problems opening saved pdf files on desktop

I can open pdf files in Mavericks Safari 7.0, but if I save it to the desktop and try to re-open, I get error messages.  However, if a pdf arrives in an email, I can save to the desktop and it opens perfectly.  Any ideas, please?

If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Unable to open/save pdfs

Since upgrading to Firefox 4.0.1 I am unable to open/save pdfs from citibanks site. I using a Apple Macbook Pro running MAC OX X 10.6.7.
I have no issues saving opening/saving pdf from other financial institutions.

This is not the usual behavior of Acrobat. If it were people would be howling.  Possible culprits: virii and other malware (Some of this subset are in the same work-group, people that work together spread the same files and virii). Incompatible graphics cards (however, new and old machines make this unlikely). If you are all using XP then perhaps the firewall or virus protection being used by the core group of people is the same and is causing interference. If it was only one or two out of many, I'd suspect hard drive corruption or faculty memory but with the numbers you are talking about very unlikely. Bad fonts cause problems and they can certainly be passed around a work group. The last possibility is that for the some number of people the uninstall of the earlier version was incomplete. But again, why just for those in the work group...
Lots of possibilities, but no answers. Sorry.

  • I saw the responses on the page to opening and saving pdfs but it is cumbersome to shut down the function in Mozilla and work around it. Is there a fix coming?

Until the Firefox 23 update I had no difficulty opening or saving pdfs in Firefox, but since the most recent update (Firefox 23) I often get error messages about damaged files when I use the download button and try to open or save files. I've checked with another browser and they open or save fine. I've tried disabling the pdf but it is cumbersome. I am using MSWord 7 if that makes any difference. Is there a fix coming for this?

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select Adobe Reader Plugin for Netscape (or something similar). Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • I cannot open any pdf files that are saved to my computer. Keep getting error 507:507

Every time I try to open a pdf file from a website or through an email it will not let me opne the file. I can open files that are saved to my computer but that doesn't do me much good in some scenarios. I run IE 10 on Windows 7 Home with Adobe Reader XI 11.0.04. I have tried unsinstalling and reinstalling. It works fine for a few days then the errors start again. HELP!

    Thank you Pat!!!

I get the following error when trying to open a pdf file... '*pdf.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read". I am able to open pdf files in IE and other programs.

I am encountering the same problem -- though with .qfx files from my bank. This worked fine in Firefox 31 ESR, but since upgrading to Firefox 33.0, I get the "<name>.qfx.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read" when I attempt to download. (I should add that downloading PDF statements from the same site works fine, and that the qfx downloads work fine in IE and Chrome.)
I tried safe mode, it is still broken. Tried v34 beta, no luck. I reverted to version 31, it works again.
I guess I will stick with the older version until a solution is found...or just use an alternate browser to download my financial data.

  • Plugin for opening a PDF in app but editing & saving outside app?

Hi all, first of all thank you for providing such helpful commentary on the DPS solution so far.
My client is a major publisher of  educational textbooks. They are repurposing content currently to distribute globally and have a sizeable offering of potential digital products. They have been thrilled with the DPS tools so far but we have hit a major snag.
One requirement of their offering is that learners can actually open and edit pdfs (for worksheets and exercises) from within the apps and make annotations, highlights etc. Also fill in text areas, and submit those activities to their teachers via email etc.
I got the PDF opening in-app which we managed to get right fairly easily using the HTMLResources.zip technique which is a URL link to HTMLResources / pdfname.pdf as you know. It is static and cant be edited or saved but viewed perfectly.  So we tried opening the PDF using a link to another app, for example GoodReader, hoping that they could open the pdf in Goodreader and there make changes and interact with it. This also wouldn't work. We tried
    gropen://
method (opens a pdf into GoodReader) but it looks for a file locally on the device (which isn't there obviously) as it wasn't bundled in the folio, and it could find one in the HTMLResources file either using that code I tried gropen://HTMLResources/pdfname.pdf too.
I check the URL scheme for Apple devices, in particular the iPad and iPhone and loads of cool things are supported like the ability to call phones, sms, link to app store etc, but not an option to open a file into another app. so that something like this code is supported:
    ghttp://www.samplepdf.com/sample.pdf
Is there a solution here that you know of, perhaps a plugin thats exists or can be written for this? This client has scores of books and right now they are looking at scrapping the Adobe DPS tools due to this lack of functionality and going the custom app route.
Thanks for your time, any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Eva

Acrobat is only able to work with PDF files. You could convert a jpeg or tiff into a PDF using Acrobat, but I personally would either do a little math to determine if it is print-quality or drop it into InDesign at the size it will need to print and see if it works.
If you have InDesign installed you can use that program to do your layout using the raster images and check their effective ppi using the links panel:
Using InDesign might make most sense for you as you can do the layout for raster images here, and for PDF documents that clients have prepared you could use Acrobat.
The advantages of using both like this are that they have very powerful industry-standard prepress features. These prepress features can do most of your work for you by checking for low resolution images, colors out of gamut, missing links, type embedding problems etc.
More on prepress in InDesign here, this is for CS3, but the process is essentially the same in CS6: (I would skip through to 2:00)
    And prepress in Acrobat XI:
