Opening second tab

I am new to Macs and started on the Beta version of Safari. The latest update has installed version 4, but there is an annoying omission - where is the convenient little cross to open a new tab? It appears only after two tabs have been opened, but it would be much more helpful if it were there from the beginning as it was in the Beta version. I hope someone at Apple is reading this - please add it asap.

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
In Safari final, go to the View Menu>Customize Toolbar. At the top you'll see the "add tab" indicator. Just drag it to the toolbar, then select "done".
I use Command/T keys to quickly open new tabs. I find it faster than moving the cursor to the toolbar.

  • Opening second tab, no address causes download speed to drop from 160 kbs to less than 5 kbs and sits there doing nothing, does not happen with IE, why is this

after firefox updated from 27 to 28, when i download a file, play music, watch a video, or run a speed test, normal speed is about 160 kb/s (dsl connection 1.3 Mb/s) - just opening another blank tab (not any address) or try to open another page like google search page, download speed drops to less than 5 kb/s - downloading stops, and second page does not open, why is this happening, it does not happen with internet explorer and the version of IE i have is out of date,
history/cookies all clear automatically when close, i have disabled all add on, run malware, adware searches - show no problem, norton antivirus is up to date, i have spent hours on phone with ATT isp and connection is showing no problem - if i run a speed test it shows good, if i try to run a speed test and open second tab - speed fails and speed test will not even finish, ATT suggested I try the same thing in IE and there is no problem - so it appears to be an issue with Firefox 28

What is the CPU load when this slowdown happens?
Are you using a specific driver in Windows to mange the internet connection that might not get enough processor time to run properly?
It is also possible that other (security) isn't able to do its work and takes additional CPU time.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem if starting Firefox in Safe Mode didn't help.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Terminal hang on opening second tab

    hi,
I hope this is the right forum.
Since I upgraded to 10.5, my Terminal keeps crashing as I open a second tab or a new window. This doesn't always happen, but when it happens, this behaviour will continue until I reboot OS X. Then it may be gone for a while or, if I'm unlucky, not.
As a power-terminal-user, this is very disturbing. It even happens with non-OsX-Terminals like iTerm or Terminator. On opening a second terminal window, there is no response from the window and according to top the terminal application I opened the second tab in has an average CPU usage of 99%.
There is no .profile or something, I tried it with bash and zsh as a standard shell, there's no difference.
    Please, is there a solution?

I am having this problem too, but only if I run a certain program that leaves a lot of hanging processes around. Other symptoms I noticed:
    * Many processes owned by root called "login". I see that there is one even when it's working normally, but I was getting something like 10.
    * Typing common commands ("ps") in an existing terminal window caused some sort of kernel-level loop that could not be killed.
Even reboot hung, so I have been forced to power-down, twice so far.

hello, you can set the page that will show up when you open a new tab manually - enter '''about:config''' into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up), search for the preference named '''browser.newtab.url''' and double-click & change its value to any site you'd like ('''about:home''' is the address for the default homepage).

This can also be a problem with the files [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
Delete [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
You will have to redo App Tabs and Tab Groups after deleting sessionstore.js.

  • If I have a pinned homepage; How can I keep Firefox from opening a second tab. None of the answers on this site help at all

I have a local html file on my system that I use as a homepage in Firefox. This homepage has a list of links that I regularly use. I have this file homepage pinned in Firefox. Every time I open Firefox not only do I get my pinned homepage, I get another tab with the firefox homepage opened and focused on.
All I want to load when I open Firefox is my chosen homepage. That is it. How do I stop this second tab from opening?
None of the older questions and answers on this site seem to work. Why is this so hard. It works in Google Chrome out of the box but I'm migrating away from Chrome because Google decided to break my extensions without my permission by not allowing third party extensions to be loaded, only ones listed in their store.

I do not see why it should not work for you. I have just tried doing that and it works for me.
First of all double check what is shown on your list of home pages. Firefox may be set to open more than one home page, each one as a separate tab. The listing separates the tabs with a pipe symbol | (Often the key above the Ctrl key)
    * See [[How to set the home page]]
Another possibility is that you have set Firefox to restart with the tabs from the previous setting.

  • If I want to open the same website in a second tab and press Ctrl+T and start typing the website title or URL, why does Firefox 4 insist on switching to the first tab? Is it possible to turn this off?

I regularly need to open the same website in two tabs, to be able to view changes made between opening the first and second tabs. In Firefox 3.x I could press Ctrl+T and start typing the website title or URL, which would be auto-completed by Firefox. This enabled me to quickly open the same website in a second tab. Firefox 4 does not do this, instead it wants me to switch to the existing tab. This is not what I need.
Of course it is possible to open the same website in a second tab via e.g. a bookmark, but this takes more time and effort. It would be great if I could select Firefox's behavior in this situation.

To create a duplicate of an existing tab in Firefox 4, do one of the following:
*middle-click the icon on the left end of the URL/Location/Address Bar
*hold down the Ctrl key and drag the tab until a small arrow appears at the border between tabs, then release the mouse button, then release the Ctrl key.

When I open a second tab in Firefox, it does not go to my home page. Instead it goes to a page that displays what looks like a collection of pages (or links) that I have visited in the recent or distant past. I would much rather have it go to my home page which is much more useful to me. I have tried to change this in 'Options' but with no luck. Please fix this.

  • How do I stop Firefox automatically opening and forcing me onto a second tab with a Google sign-in every time I open Firefox?

Every time I open Firefox to search for something - it automatically opens a second tab and forces me to that tab. On the second tab is the Google account login. I now avoid using Firefox if I can because I cannot shut this off.

Does this also happen in Safe Mode? You can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
    * Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
