Opening secure attachment in Firefox

I have a user who has a secure attachment sent to her in an e-mail. Because of the secure nature of the e-mail, she cannot save the PDF locally and open it in Adobe. It will only open on her Mac using the default browser - currently Firefox. It opens to a blank screen.
If she changes her default browser to Safari, it opens fine.
Any suggestions? I have tried to add 127.0.0.1 as an exception to the pop-up blocker and just about everything else. No success so far.

There have been problems reported with the latest Adobe Reader update on Mac.
You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox and use the Adobe Reader program or Preview instead.
*Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader
PDF files may also be found under another entry like Portable document.

My software allows a user to open Attachments. I get a box with the title "Opening message1.txt" which also has an "Open with" radio button. I then click the OK button and my attachment is displayed. However, I also get a second box with the title "Downloads." How do change the Firefox Options to not get the Downloads box?

Even updated to the latest version of Firefox. Still no luck.
I can open an attachment but after I close it, Firefox ALWAYS crashes.
What could I be missing that will resolve this problem?

Weeks of TRASH = FIREFOX 3.66
All three of my computers have been totally worthless since I upgraded to FF3.66. Each are built/configured differently. Each has a different OS. Each has all the above problems. Crashes constantly, RAM & CPU usage on a Q9650 is always near 100%. After screwing around for days I finally came here and found out that I was among a very large and upset group of users. With the last few upgrade I've had minor problems with my selection of add-ons Firefox disabled them for a later fix. I found a new DL today, 3.67 so I installed it figuring the problem was addressed. After installation of 3.67 it still says it's 3.66??
I went to their site to find help from them and couldn't get anyplace until I came here and read about my problem. Thanks for giving me a clear head so I could find a good solution.
My solution was to remove all Mozilla/Firefox products and then install other browsing options. It felt funny because for the first time in years I had to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to find other options. My computer is problem free and fast as usual now.
I wonder how many other users have abandoned them due to this BS?? I for one will probably stick with my new choices now.
YES, Weeks of TRASH = FIREFOX 3.66

  • Can't open my attached files on my yahoo email account unless clearing all history on Firefox - this is maddening!! Help!

Everytime I want to open an attached file on my yahoo email, I now have to clear all the history including: Browsing and download history, Form and search history, cookies, and cache before I can open attachments on my yahoo mail and then I have to re-enter all my passwords, etc.
This was previously not a problem opening any attached files like PDF files or document files.
    Please help!

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

Perhaps if you change your setting here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Applications tab
In the search box, type '''power''' and then pause until the list is filtered. If you have these, try changing the action to "Always Ask":

It's possible that if you don't have Microsoft Office installed, you might not have those listed.

  • I have something attached to firefox called vostaren search. is that you? or have i been hacked?

I downloaded firefox. Later I tried to download open office, using firefox, then found something called vostaren search when I opened the firefox icon, so I removed firefox entirely from my computer, then waited a few days then re-downloaded firefox. Still have the vostaren attached to firefox. Iis that a legitimate part of firefox. or have I been hacked? Is there now a cookie that will cause firefox to direct me immediately to vostaren when I open firefox?

hi friendmozilla, no this is no legitimate part of firefox and sound like an issue with adware that might have been bundled with a download. in order to resolve that please perform all these steps:
    # [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
    # afterwards go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
    # finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.

  • Can't open pdf attachment in Yahoo Mail. Worked in 25.0 not 25.0.1. Still works with IE.

Clicking on a pdf attachment in AT&T/Yahoo Mail results in "a file was downloaded". Used to open the file in Firefox 25.0 and prior. Switching to IE I can click on the attachment and it opens. Seems it could be something in 25.0.1. I cleared my history (cache, cookies) but this did not fix the problem. I disabled the pdf viewed and that didn't help either.

i'm not sure as to what exactly is going on, but it looks like yahoo has changed something on their server that makes certain old url formats dysfunctional - at least quite a number of other users have reported that... so if you have a bookmark for yahoo mail, change its address to the generic https://mail.yahoo.com/, which should redirect you to the current & working url

  • Receiving, opening, saving attachments WARNING long post

In some ways, this post is more of a reminder to myself on how to deal with attachments that I've discovered so far and hopefully it will help some other confused souls. I'm betting that like most people on this forum, your interest in the Playbook is partly motivated by how you can quickly and easily access files on the run to review them and edit them minimally and quickly (oops! forgot to change the boss' title in the memo now!) without resorting to hauling out a laptop, waiting for it to start, load the relevant office program, and then hoping your hotel wifi is strong and stable enough to actually load up a bloated email client to download far too many attachments. If that's your circumstances are like mine, then the PB is clearly a work in progress. I thought that Apple's iPad method of dealing with document transfers was crippled at best; the PB is a quest in hide-and-seek.
Transferring media files (photos, movies, etc.). If you use Windows, I'm guessing you're doing okay. If you use a Mac like me, the BB Desktop will not work for such transfers. You can use wifi to bulk transfer media files from your Mac to the PB, but you lose the rich context (playlists, etc.) that you probably want.
Opening attachments in Mail within Bridge. This one confuses me, but I suppose it works best for the corporate world - maybe. If I open an attachment from an email in the PB Bridge from within Mail, I could select an attachment and tap to open it. The relevant app (Reader, sheet to go, word to go, etc.) opens up a new window and the document can be read. At this point in the RIM life cycle, any documents within Bridge are read-only and cannot be saved/edited, which of course defeats any aspirations of on-the-fly editing. Nonetheless, they are viewable and gloriously so. But it was not obvious to me where the documents were now. If I wanted to, say, review them later, where would I find them? The most rational place I thought they would be would be the Bridge Files icon. However, if I selected Playbook under Bridge Files, there did not seem to be anything, and if I selected BlackBerry smartphone, it was not obvious either. By chance, I muddled through and discovered that under the smartphone choice, if I drilled down through my SD card directory to BlackBerry to documents to Bridge (ah! that's new!) subfolders, I would find all my downloaded documents in this new Bridge folder which is supposedly on my smartphone. Distressingly, I cannot find this same subfolder "Bridge" on the SD card on the smartphone itself.
But this is the where we enter another dimension however! All of the above (2) ONLY seems to apply to emails sent to my GMail account that my BlackBerry - and therefore my PB - is also set up to receive within Mail in Bridge: given that I'm not an IT adminstrator, I'll just call them the non-corporate emails. If I open up an attachment from a message in Mail within Bridge that was sent through my usual corporate email system (in this case, Lotus Notes - yet another story), then the attachment ends up in SD card directory to BlackBerry to documents, but does not go into Bridge. I lack the knowledge or wisdom to fathom why this is different, other than it probably has something to do with the corporate side of things.
Opening attachments from Webmail (e.g. GMail). This one is also a bit bizarre. Although not very easy to find, at least all the attachments from (2) and (3) ended up in almost the same places on my smartphone SD card. But you cannot edit them.  So what if I opened up via the web browser? GMail works quite well actually. When I tapped on an attachment to open it in GMail, it would bring me to a new pane and ask me to save it (Save "1"). It does not necessarily open it however and sometimes I would just get a new blank window. But if I swipe down from the top, I could see the downloads option, and choosing that would show me the attached document and an Open button. Opening it would load the document using the relevant app (e.g. Word to Go) and swiping down gave me another save (yes!) option (Save "2"). However, I had no idea where the attachment was saved. It does not appear under Media, any Bridge folder, etc. Assuming the attachment file type is associated with the app however, if you now open, say, Word-to-Go, well, there it is (finally!). So, the bizzarre thing is that the first save (Save "1") that you are prompted with does not seem to actually save it: only after the relevant app loads it and then you save it again (Save "2") does the attachment seem to actually get transferred to the Playbook's internal memory (somewhere). I cannot figure out the reason why you have to go through this double step. But at least now I can edit them. So maybe the solution is to mirror all my corporate emails to another service like GMail or Hotmail? (I can hear the collective gasps of the security minded types!)
Opening attachments from Webmail (e.g., GMail) within the Bridge Browser. This is maybe the ultimate compromise and combination of the above, and perhaps the situation most of us want to know about when we're on the go, get that ever important email about what was needed yesterday, don't have wifi access, but need to edit the attachment and cannot do it within the regular mail within Bridge. Dismally, this one is a fail - I get the error message "Bridge Browser: Cannot download corporate files."
After fumbling my way through an iPad and pretty much abandoning it for my workflow (although it is very good for other applications), I thought the Playbook would address almost of my needs, particularly since I've used a BlackBerry for the last six years. Personally, I think the PB hardware is fantastic, the form factor is great, and I do not care for or need 1000's of useless and trivial apps, but the implementation of what I consider core functionality is mediocre at best. I'm an academic - I'd grade the Playbook a C- (maybe even a D+ (ouch!) if I was in a grumpy mood).
In the interests of fairness, I recognize that some of the issues may simply be the way my corporate parent runs its business. I toil away under Lotus Notes and use a BlackBerry Bold, OS5, Rogers network, and a three year MacBook Pro.
If anybody has found other solutions or I've simply done something wrong, I'd love to hear. Otherwise, my abode will likely not be this Playbook's forever home.

Hi fochtk... you're welcome (I think! this seems unnecessarily confusing!). I think you're referring to my points (2) and (3) from my original post. In summary, this is what I THINK is happening.
On my BlackBerry Bold 9700, I have two email accounts, my corporate Lotus account, and my GMail account. There is one universal desktop that gathers both incoming emails into one so that I can view all messages at the same time. I imagine that the corporate server for this universal desktop therefore also have all these same messages because all the messages (GMail and Lotus) then show up in Mail via Bridge on my PB.
    A. When in Bridge - Mail I open up an attachment in a mail that was received by my corporate Lotus account, the documents show up on my phone's SD card (I think you mean the memory card, not the SIM card for telecommunications). If I check my Playbook under Bridge Files -> Phone Icon -> BlackBerry/SDCard -> Documents, the attachments are there, and if I check my file manager on my phone, the same attachments are listed in the same subfolder. Interestingly, I was given the option to download them too.
    B. When I open up an attachment in a mail that was received initially by my GMail account, the documents are not given the option to download. However, when I go to Bridge Files -> Phone Icon -> BlackBerry/SDCard -> Documents -> Bridge, the attachments from this GMail destined message are there! Weird, because I didn't create a Bridge subfolder on my phone's SD card, nor can I find a Bridge subfolder on the phone itself.
SORRY. I stand corrected. I just went into Bridge - Mail to double check and guess what... ALL of my email attachments no matter what account they were sent to originally (Lotus or GMail) if they are accessed through Bridge get dumped into this Bridge subfolder that is supposedly located on my phone's SD card (situation B). Maybe situation A was for when I downloaded the attachment to the phone first: I've gone back and forth with this so many times now...
Maybe this Bridge subfolder is a hidden folder tied to your phone so that if you lose your Playbook attachments cannot be accessed? But there seems to be no options to delete these downloaded files. UPDATE! Yes, I should have checked sooner. When you are accessing your phone, use the menu button to select "Show Hidden". It then displays the greyed out Bridge subfolder under Documents and you can then manipulate (e.g., delete) your files from there. This would make sense so that your files are as secure as possible via your phone. Still can't edit the attachments though...
    Hope this helps...

  • Can't open secured documents on windows 7 domain client with mandatory profiles.

While opening certain PDF files we have the problem that the user is presented with a message that he does not have the rights permissions. This happens twice, after that the users gets an empty page with the message the Adobe version might not be up to date. We use Acrobat Pro 10, but this also happens while using Reader 11.0.8. On our windows 2008 terminal services machine this could be fixed by giving the user rights on c:\ to create and remove a file. :O. On windows 7 this doesn't work probably because of UAC. But we've tried every solution to that available on the internet, disabling uac, changing uac options, changing rights on userprofile folders, changing rights on c:\ but to no avail. When using process explorer we can see it wants to create a temp file p328hkl.tmp or something like that on C but it can't and immediattely after is shows the error on screen.
Anyone who also has this problem or solved it? There are no problems with simple self made pdf files/scans but only with certain types of pdf files for which it tries to create a tmp file.
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Hi Brogers,
Thanks for your reaction. We do have AppData redirection in place. We redirect AppData to a share on our data server which works perfectly fine for all other applications. The weird thing is that Reader/Acrobat try to write to C:\ which to my knowledge should not happen, is this maybe a fallback because it can’t write to a different location? Users have full control on their own roaming AppData but not on their local AppData that is made by windows itself while copying the mandatory default profile to C:\.
I might use the wrong term while saying secured documents. I’m talking about a document created by Raet/Youforce a web application for personal administration. The documents can be opened by other viewers than Acrobat/Reader but then only contain the background and not the text. In Acrobat/Reader they do open normally when Acrobat/Reader can create the .tmp file. Otherwise it will not display the file at all. I would attach such a document to see but since it contains certain info I am not allowed to do so.
I hope we can work out a solution for this.

  • How can I set the opening home page of FIrefox to display the current bookmarks. This used to work with bookmarks.html but I understand this file is no longer current.

I wish to display my current bookmarks as my opening home page in Firefox. I do not wish to use the Bookmarks sidebar instead. It used to work to open with bookmarks.html, which was and still is stored in my Firefox profile. However, I understand this file is no longer kept current but is only retained for legacy/compatibility reasons, and that the current bookmarks info is now stored in places.sqlite, etc. Is there a way with the new versions of Firefox to display as a full opening webpage the assuredly current bookmarks? Thank you

    Hi Jaime,
Are you saying, you are getting junk characters in the email attachment? Then pls check the following. Since you want to send Japanese fonts, please pass language 'J' in both  objpack-obj_langu = '3' & doc_chng-obj_langu  = '3' instead of '3' please replace it with 'J'.
Another thing which you may have to check is the SCOT device type. As I understand from my basis colleague, this may also affect your attachment fonts since the emails are sent through SCOT. Go to transaction SCOT-> Settings-> Device types for format conversion. Check whether wrong device type is defined for Japanese there. Hope this helps

  • Is there any wat to print attachments in a PDF Portfolio without opening each attachment individually?

We have a large PDF Portfolio with many attachments and would like to print those items all at once without opening every single attachment. I would think think that this is possible considering I took the files from outlook 2003 and you are able to print an email and its attachments in that program. If anyone knows how to do this, I would appreciate the help.

Re: Is there any way to print multiple attachments from an Adobe PDF Portfolio without having to open each attachent individually?
Portfolios only support the printing of PDF files (more specifically, PDF files whose security permissions allow printing). You can print all PDF files in a Portfolio without opening them all simply by opening the Portfolio and clicking on the print button in the Portfolio toolbar. If desired, you can also limit it to a selection of PDF files.
Unfortunately non-PDF files will need to be opened and printed individually from their respective apps.

  • Using latest version of fireFox to access Think Central, pages will not load and they say that this is a security issue with FireFox?

Teachers in our district are supposed to use www.thinkcentral.com with FireFox.
Some have no problem accessing the lesson plans.
Most when they login click on a lesson plan and an icon shows up that says loading but never does.
If you reboot the computer and login you can open a page once but not a second time and no other lessons will open.
Think Central support says this is a security issue with Firefox.
I have updated FireFox, all the Adobe, Reader, Flash, Air and Shockwave. As well as Java.
I have allowed the pop ups to the think Central web site.
    Any help would be appreciated

Are there any notification icons on the left end of the address bar? If so, please click them to see whether they related to security issues (such as blocked content - shield icon: [[How does content that isn't secure affect my safety?]]) or a plugin requiring permission (Lego-like icon).
Does Think Central have any help pages about this issue? Without an account, it is difficult to explore the issue first-hand.

  • Can not open pdf forms in Firefox

We have pdf qoutationforms that can no longer be opened whenusing Firefox. (The files opened fine till a few weeks ago). When we click the link it just say stopped in the left corner and after a minute or two Acrobat Reader opens up with the following error message "A file I/O error has occurred. The file connection timed out." The file opens fine in Safari and Internet Explorer.
The two forms are here A file I/O error has occurred. The file connection timed out.

I did try the link, it includes 2 pdf s on that page I did successfully load in firefox, and also downloaded to my computer, so that rules out the site being faulty or the pdf file itself.
    * ( small 1MB pdf, it did seem to take a while, maybe the site is slow/busy)
    * see [[Error loading web sites#w_interrupted-or-reset-connection]] - Interrupted or reset connection
    * Are you still getting the error messages you mentioned in the original post ?
As a workaround for that particular form, I note it is merely there to complete details and gives the option of attaching it to an email. You presumably will already be in a position to do that.
Regarding the '''link you quote and the 2 pdfs '''
    # are you able to download them to your computer, can you confirm again that you did that ?
    # do those specific pdf files open on your computer with your adobe reader ?
    # confirm, or otherwise, do other pdf files open with firefox, ''' when those pdf files are saved on your computer'''
    # what version of reader & plugin are you using, is it the latest version (mine is 9, that worked)
    See also
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
'''From what you are saying you appear to have a problem with the plugin.''' If you are unable to open the pdf with firefox when it is on your computer it is unlikely firefox will open that pdf on the webpage
