Opening the HDrive with Mac booted from System disk? Any help please?

Is it possible to open the HDrive and look/search for files inside it
while my Mac is started from manufacturer's system disk?
(It seems to me I can do just system reinstall and use dusk utilities but have no way to see what is in the HD)
I am a novice and any tip from experienced users is welcome!
My MacBookPro has OSX 10.6

I started with opening Terminal and
following line appeared :

next to it I entered as you told me:
/sbin/mount -uw /
and clicked on return (here I don't know if it is right thing to do ) and got this :

followed by another new line:

( I tried to to type lines as accurately as possible because I can copy them in Terminal but have nowhere to paste them - the laptop in question works only when booted from CD.)
So, from this point I don't know how to proceed - where to enter the line you recomended: cp /Users/stephanie /Volumes/Backup/stephanie
and what are the exact steps to perform...
Also I don't quite understand what is "Home folder" -is it the administrator account folder which I named when installed the system for first time?
In my computer it is named "steph77"
Also some extra info that may assist you:
My external drive is named "LaCIE" and is plugged in the MacBook.
My internal hard drive to which I want access is named "MacHD" and my account
steph77 is inside it.
Can you help me with the steps to accomplish my task?
It is my first time meeting with command line and am a bit lost but very determined to learn it!

It's almost impossible to say whether it's the battery or something else. If you're running 6.0.1 and you've done a restore and set it up as new, there are no other software updates to try.
If there's no Apple Store near you, contact Apple Care. If you can't wait for a replacement phone, you may be able to get an express replacement (they ship you the replacement before you ship them yours, but they will put a hold on your credit card until yours is in their hands).

i burn a DVD with verified iso with MD5 with Nero Express

i use burn image , of course and
i have a Sempron +2400 with asus a7s8x mainboard
and i download all 5 file for DVD x86 and then i copy /b all this files.
when computer boot from cd the screen is bleu with Solaris ................ v.20 message and after 1 second message became

AAAARGGHH - I posted to grumble about the "new" iTunes, [which is still a load of garbage], but cos 100s of people feel the same too, my mailbox is FULL of threads to the post.
I have reset my e-mail preferences to NO for ALL notifications, with a conspicuos lack of success. So i use a junk filter to stop them, but I ain't pleased. Can anyone explain how I can get the system to work right [I know, I can guess what you are thinking, expaecting anything from Apple to be user friendly is a long shot.... but at least on can try!]

G5 will not boot from system disk or from Tech Tool Pro 5

Hi everyone - Having a bit of trouble and hoped I might find some answers here.
I suspect my system drive was having some issues as it sounded like it was being taxed and strained as I would open up applications from it. Upon verifying the disk using Disk Utilities, the test would stop short with the following message:
First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered
Filesystem verify or repair failed
In addition, an error message came up (in red) on the disk utility screen as well saying:
Volume header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
Normally from here, I'd start up the computer from the Tech Tool Pro 5 disk (holding down C key upon restart). But when I did this, the computer never responded. Instead, the power was on but the screens went black and the computer went into a very quiet "idle" mode.
After about a minute, the fans began ramping up pretty high (and loud). This went on until I finally had to manually shut down the computer by holding the power switch down for a few seconds. I didn't know what else to do. Those fans were not coming down (not even after 10 minutes).
Anyway, I pushed the power button again and held the C key down. Still, nothing.... The fans stayed idle, for a little while and then ramped up again just like last time. I hit that same dead end and powered down the computer via the power button.
Is there an alternate way to boot the computer from Tech Tool Pro or the original start up disks? I'm having no luck, here.
I'm on my way into town to purchase a new internal drive (something with about 1TB of space) so that my pro apps can swim a little instead of being being bogged down on a 250G drive.

The Install disk has version 10.4 on it. I have also tried booting from my OS 10.5 disk but with no avail.
However, here is an update on my plight.
Apple tech says that after hearing the symptoms, he thinks that one of the processors is shot. Being that my particular model of G5 (dual 2.7 processors) is a liquid cooled machine, it's possible that some sort of leak has formed and has either taken out a processor or has caused a processor to overheat. He says that this model of G5 has been known to do that. In this case, nothing will boot which makes me think that my original system drive may actually be okay. I'm taking it in for the tech to look at it and just be sure that's the problem. However, if it is a dead processor, the part alone would run $799 plus labor to install it. Frankly, that's just too much for me to pay to keep this old G5. I'd rather put that money towards a new or reconditioned Mac Pro 8 core or quad core machine.
I've owned several Mac computers in the past and perhaps this is the frustration talking but it seems that no matter how diligent you are in maintaining your Macintosh, these machines only seem to last about 5 years before something majorly wrong happens (mother board, processor, etc). Can I expect this same, limited time frame from a new Mac Pro? I mean, am I just being paranoid?

I need want to run Disk utilities on my mac. Have done this before using system disk and holding C etc.
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard it no longer sees my system disk.
Restart holding down C with system disk installed...and mac just boots-up normally!
Can anyone suggest what the problem is?
NB: Ultimately I want to run the disk utility to check that the Hard Drive is healthy after install.

You get the picture....holding down the C key expecting to see the install software option and all I was getting was my desktop. I tried the option key and no joy there either. I was beginning to think it was the two Mac superdrives installed in my mac which are a nightmare. They only seem to be able to read mac disks!!! all a bit incestuous. I found out via the forums that the Sony DVD RW DW-D150A have taken up a lot of airtime. Still pondering what I can do about them...they were fine and the 2nd drive has never really been used. Apparently they are a rebadged NEC burner but they suddenly decided to get choosey about what disks to read....anyway sorry I am losing focus.
Stuck the Snow Leopard disk and instead of restarting or holding C I just clicked on the desktop icon and pressed the install 10.6 button. It huffed and puffed and chugged away turning my screen blue and then grey and finally coming up with a box with two options...install 10.6 or Utilities. Pressed utilities and I was in familiar ground...Disk First Aid!!!! Ran the verifications and repair buttons and a few fixes and job done....a healthy report on the state of my HD.
To be fair the small booklet does say... to install Snow Leopard insert your installation disc and double-click install Mac OSX. I guess I am so used to using previous versions of the OS and pressing C etc hat I did not realise I could access the utilities/First Aid the same way. Took the best part of my day to do this and if they had put in a 3rd paragraph in the booklet to say access Utilites/First Aid the same way my life would have been a whole lot easier.
Now scared to upgrade to Lion as I really am not enjoying the mac experience at the moment....too much depends on my mac and software working without having to worry about technicalities or IT. It’s just not my bag. Thanks guys for the suggestions and your time. I am interested on your opinions with regards to the two superdrives! I have stuff on old DVDs and it just doesn’t see them but it used to...why? My fault for buying two of the buggers I suppose.

I like many others have major problems with my Ipod, we downloaded the Itunes 6 , removed it, went back to 4.9, connected the Ipod, everything got erased. ( but it was still on the computer thank goodness, anyway now I can't put anything back on to my Ipod, it say "Ipod cannot update. The required file cannot be found"

OK - Looks like your iTunes is working and has the songs you expect in it. No need to uninstall iTunes.
Are the Playlists on the iPod only, or are they in iTunes only, or are they on both? Are they populated with the songs you expect?
You can save the Playlists by 'Exporting' them individually to a PC file. Within iTunes, select (highlight) a playlist, go to File==>Export Song List and save the file to a 'Playlists' folder that you create. Save the playlists as a .txt and an .xml file (do both for each playlist: data redundancy is good).
Do you have the original photos that are on the iPod? We will have to Restore the iPod and all data on it will be erased. As you have all the necessary music on iTunes, all we would be concerned about are the photos. Or anything else you haven’t mentioned.
As long as you are satisfied with the state of your iTunes (all music and playlists present and accounted for), then you can comfortably Restore the iPod and place it all back on the unit. Restoring an iPod will not impact your iTunes. It just clears off the iPod's HD and replaces the operating system with a fresh copy. This should correct your inability to download any additional music to the iPod.
Before you proceed with the Restore below, make sure that you have copies of all the data on the iPod so you do not lose anything.
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software (if you already do, skip to *)
You also need to install the new Updater software (if applicable) by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
After rebooting, run the Updater.
* Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version and format your iPod's hard drive.
After the Restore complete, re-register the iPod with iTunes, choose your syncing preference and place the music back on the iPod. Do whatever it is you do with the photos (I just have a mini, so no experience with photos), and you should be good to go.
Post back if you have any questions. Especially if you are unsure of anything before you perform any additional processes.

Satellite boot and recovery disk issue, help please...

Well here is the issue. My satellite is a few years old, all the sudden it quits booting. Gets to the starting windows xp mode then crashes and repeats the process. So I thought, well..I will just install my recovery disks..
Well, thanks to whatever reason, and its frustrating as anything..I get a wrong machine error. Wont allow me to install my recovery disks. Call toshiba, they say my warranty expired have to go pay a service rep.. Arrgh..
This was bought brand new and it is the correct machine..
Anyway..when I get wrong machine i do get:
Installation process aborted/failed!

I am assuming, there is something I can type there that will have it reconize my machine.. Any ideas?? Toshiba was no help. Or.. If you have a idea on how i can boot this thing without the recoery disks.

New iphone 5 setup with icloud backup from 4s iOS5.1 (HELP PLEASE)

long story hopefully an easy fix....
on wensday my power supply went and had to ship computer across country to Puget Computer Systems as we weren't sure if it was power supply or mobo...luckily it was power supply.
i daily backed up iphone 4s with itunes (10.7) as i do all music manually, playlists, etc. have like 3,000 plus songs, videos, audiobooks, mail aaccts and about 48 apps.
so next day (sept 19th) apple comes out with iOS 6 which i update my 4s to with no problem. I wanted a day to play with it to learn my way around.
next day i wait in line for 8 hours overnite and was #2 in line at apple store for my ATT 32gb white iPhone 5. while at apple store I get my icloud backup which gets all paid music,apps, etc since itunes version 10.3 (i always did both backups so as not to lose my contacts more than anything.
I have other paid stuff that is in library on computer along with audiobooks and about 2700 more songs.
my icloud backup put the playlists on iPhone but not most of the music for them as lots were ripped from my cd's.as i double them up making a copy on iPhone and a copy on itunes.
So I have been using iPhone 5 with no problems just don't have all of itunes library on it. My computer is coming back this week how do I plug in iPhone 5 via USB (which will be seen as new phone even though it has same name) and use my existing iTunes 10.7 library which the backups in iTunes still has iOS 5.1.1 on it?
There must be an easy way of doing it as i don't want to wipe off iphone 5 again as i don't see any purpose my library is all organized perfectly. I know my way around windows 7 pro 64 bit pretty well just don't know what itunes is going to say once it sees "joe's iPhone" again and installs the usb drivers and icon for it. what will it ask in regards to library and how do i use it with previous iOS on it?
