Opening Tiff in ACR vs Opening in PS

I found something disturbing about how one opens a Tiff (and possibly jpeg).
If one inputs a tiff to ACR, makes adjustments and clicks done, then subsequently opens the now adjusted image by choosing CS3 in Bridge, that file will open WITHOUT the new adjustments. If you open in ACR, then tell it to open and not simply "Done" it comes with the tweaks. When you do it that way, you see in CS3 "Reading Camera RAW Format" before the image opens. Using Bridge to open straight into CS3, that info item doesn't show. This is also true if you open the file from "Open" or "Browse" in CS3.
We need a flag to allow us to open w/o reading CR or with it. I have several images I had to screw with in CS3 because it seemed the tweaks in ACR for the tiff image was inadequate, which was rather confusing. Many times I finish an image late at night, say done, then reopen the next morning to print, and go straight to CS3.
What other traps for the unwary exist between these methods of opening?

I don't know, either I'm not understanding the problem or else I'm not technical enough to realize what is going on. Here is what I did:
Opened a tiff image in Camera Raw and significantly cropped it. Clicked Done.
Right clicked on the image in Bridge and chose to open it in Photoshop.
On my computer it still opened in Camera Raw because I have chosen to prefer Camera Raw for JPEG and tiff images.
Closed Camera Raw without making any additional changes, the image is still cropped.
Did a shift/double click to open the image. This time it opened directly into Photoshop, bypassed Camera Raw, and it was still the cropped image.
However, the thumbnail image in Bridge never did reflect the crop that I made. The preview window showed the cropped image, but the thumbnail never did change. This just seems to be an ongoing anomaly that I haven't figured out.
Like I said, I have chosen the options to prefer Camera Raw for JPEG and tiff images. But everything seems to be working the way I expect it to work.

  • Help: Can't open TIFF in ACR from bridge. ACR not an "Open With" choice

    Hi,
I have a TIFF file on my OS 10.4.11 desktop. I open CS3 Bridge and select the file ( A TIF from a scan generated in SilverFast AI Studio) I right click the file and the drop-down menu shows me CS3 as an "Open With" choice but I do not see ACR as a choice. I choose CS3 and it opens in CS3. As I have TIFF and JPEG files as a default for ACR when I choose a JPG and CS3 it opens in ACR... why not this TIFF? Could it be that as it was scanned with a bit depth of 48 ACR can not interpret it?
How can I add ACR as a choice in "Open With" so that when I right click any image file on my Mac desktop I see ACR as a choice?

I actually slightly prefer the NikonScan software to Silverfast's so I only use NikonScan with my Coolscan and scan to 14-bit RGB Tiffs.
For the larger format film, I use Silverfast with the Epson 4990 and do the same thing.
Then I open the resulting Tiffs in ACR 4.4.1 (hosted by Bridge) to do any preliminary color- and tone- corrections before proceeding to Photoshop.
I have not found a need for HDR when working from Color NEGATIVE film (but I do remove the ridiculous Shadow/HL clipping that these scanner software manufacturers seem to program into their default settings!) and I don't use "slide" film.

  • Opening TIFF in PS vs ACR

I just had a job printed for me on a large format printer. I sent tiff's that had been opened in ACR for a last minute check for noise and sharpening. No file needed attention so I exited.
At the agency, we opened each file to examine it. All except one opened in PS, the exception opened in ACR which the operator, after asking a couple of questions, went on to open it in PS. However, a problem occurred at that point. My files were set at 360 dpi. His ACR was set to open in PS at 240 DPI. It wasn't until I got the prints to my client that I realized one of them was grossly over sized. In the ensuing discussion with the print maker, with both of us scratching our heads as to who did what, remembered that one file opened in ACR. Sure enough, when we checked the oversized file it was 240 dpi and the rest 360.
From now on, I am going to supply finals in .psd, to avoid such occurrences. But then again, why only one opening in ACR? On my computer, the files are starred and would open in ACR. Had all of them opened at his site, I would have flagged it. Preferences on his computer do not have jpeg or tiff checked to open in ACR.
    He runs Mac, I'm PC.
I ask this because there are times I would use a vendor in another state, and what these folks do is print WYSIWYG, from the file submission. In this case a 20x30 printed 30x45.

  • Open Jpeg and tiff in ACR as a choice

It would be nice to be able in choosing wether to open jpeg and tiff in ACR using right mouse click menu. AFAIK now you only can set preferences to open these files always in ACR or never.

  • Having Trouble Opening TIFF Files

I'm having trouble opening TIFF files into Camera Raw. I have checked all my settings in Adobe Bridge and everything seems to be saying that TIFF files should open in Camera Raw when I click on then int and then into photoshop when finished editing in camera raw.
I'm trying to open 32 bit HDR images saved as a TIFF file into Camera Raw, and there seems to be nothing I can do to get them there. I have tried everything I can think of. When I right click on it (cmd click I'm on a mac) the option to open in camera Raw isn't there. I have tried clicking and dragging the image into Photoshop to try and force it maybe to open into Camera Raw, and I have opened photoshop and tried opeing it up from mini Bridge. In mini bridge I have the option to open the image into Camera Raw when I click this nothing happens.
I'm not sure what else to try I'm on CS6 and Camera Raw 7.0 .

    Alright I'll try that thanks!

It might be that you need to update camera raw to version 8.3 by going to Help>Updates from within photoshop or bridge.
(i don't remember exactly in which version of acr that was added, but probably after version 7.0)

Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW. How can I correct the problem?

What kind of TIFFs?  Are they multi-layered, for instance?  ACR will not open layered files.

Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW - PS 6

Sorry I'm taking to along, but I checked a few things using ACR 8.6
Saved a png as an 8 bit tiff, then to 16 bit. Changed the background layer into a floating layer, all opened in ACR.
It was when I added an adjustment layer, that it no longer opened in ACR.
Now what can I recommend? If you have Lightroom, you can Import and work on your layered tiffs that way. I hope this is a viable alternative for you, because I think ACR does have a problem with layered tiffs and I don't really know of any workaround, but you are free to explore.

  • Opening tiff photos in Adobe Camera Raw

I can not open my tiff files / photos in Adobe Camera Raw.  I am using CS6 that has been completely updated with all the current updates. I go to Bridge, highlight a tiff thumbnail photo and go up the file drop down menu.  The open in raw selection is grayed out and I can not select it.  It works fine with jpeg files, and I can open raw files without problems.  It just won't work with tiff files. I have gone to preferences and selected the option to open all supported tiff flles but this did not work either.
I have uninstalled Photoshop and Bridge and reinstalled it and updated it all again and it still will not let me open tiff files in Camera Raw.
    Any ideas?

I am more apt to beleive the issue is with the tif files themselves. Not all tif files are equal. It depends on the compression, bit mode and so forth. Can the tiff files be opened in photoshop? if so, then that just maybe the problem. if not, then the file itself maybe corrupt. But I am leaning towards the settings used when saving the file.

  • Lightroom won't open TIFF or JPEG files to CS5

Recently upgraded to a new iMac. This morning when I tried to open a TIFF file from Lightroom 3.4.1 into Photoshop CS5 I got a message saying: Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at /Volumes/Drobo1/Photos/2011/02-14-2011 Yellowstone/Yellowstone-0641-Edit.tif for editing.
    It will not be opened.
The only way Lightroom will open a TIFF or JPEG image to CS5 is if I tell it to open a copy of the image with Lightroom Adjustments. If I say I want to edit the original or a copy, it won't do it.
If I go into CS5 and open the TIFF there, it works fine, so the problem doesn't seem to be with CS5.
Lightroom WILL open RAW files into CS5 without any error message.
I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, which was upgraded yesterday and am wondering if that's the problem since I could open TIFFs on the new computer before.
    Phil

Do you have full permissions to the DROBO folder the files are in?  I'm a Windows person so I can't tell you how to check this, but upgrading a OS and then things not working might be related to permissions where the files were created with a profile on the previous OS.

  • No longer capable of opening TIFF or JPEG in Camera Raw

    Hi,
I was able, initially, to open TIFF, JPEG and even PSD files in Camera Raw , but today I installed an HP image application that came with my iPAQ and have found that I no longer can open these files with Camera Raw from Bridge (or from anywhere else for that matter).
what can I do to restore the previous behavior?
I am doing this now to see: open Control Panel and click on Photoshop CS3 and select reinstall. I don't know if this will work. Any ideas?

I think this is a problem caused by memory fragmentation during the use of Bridge and Photoshop. I find that right after I start the two programs everything works the way it should. But then things gradually start to bog down, and eventually the TIF or JPEG images will not open in Camera Raw. When this happens I generally turn to the "Open As" option in Photoshop knowing that things will be better tomorrow. And they usually are. I think this is probably a problem that is more common with Windows users than those who are using a Mac. I believe Adobe concentrated more on the recoding for the Mac than they did on verifying everything for Windows users. Apparently "real" Photoshop users only work on a Mac. Those of us who are on Windows are just wannabes. :)

  • Can't open Tiff in Camera Raw CC

I have checked the Camera Raw preferences to open jpgs and tiffs in Camera Raw.  I have the Bride CC preferences set to Bridge CC for jpgs and tiffs.
I c n open jpgs in Camera Raw, but I can't open tiffs in Camera Raw.  I must be doing something wrong.
The settings for jpgs and tiffs in Windows file association are identical.
The settings for jpgs and tiffs in Bridge preferences are identical.
Yet, I can open jpgs in Camera Raw, and I can't open tiffs in Camera Raw.
    Any suggestions?
    Lynnea

Can you, from within Photoshop, choose File - Open As, then choose the TIFF file, and set the selector over on the right to Camera Raw?
I know that you'd really like to set up to open them automatically through Camera Raw, but this could serve as a workaround.

  • Cannot open JPEGs in ACR via Bridge

The strangest thing has happened recently. Where I used to be able to open a JPEG file in Camera Raw 6.3 when viewing in Bridge (CS5) it now defaults to opening them only in Photoshop (CS5). My preferred processing workflow is: Adobe Bridge > Camera Raw > Photoshop. But now the middle step processing in ACR is no longer happening automatically (I can do it manually but that's a hassle). I triple checked all my preferences and they are still set up to open JPEGs in ACR as the default. I use a Nikon D700 & D7000 and the NEF (RAW) files open fine in ACR, but not the JPEGs. I am using the Mac versions.
Has something changed with how Adobe is supporting JPEGs in ACR or am I missing something.

This is a workaround rather than a cure............................. for cs5 users............
If you are unable to open .jpg files in adobe Camera RAW from Bridge and the Preferences have been set correctly in Photoshop Preferences, and all avenues have been exhausted or you are getting the error message in Bridge when you right click, or  ctrl + r, or go to the ‘Open in Camera RAW’ button at the top of Bridge  and also Getting the error message :
‘Camera Raw Editing Is not Enabled, Camera Raw Editing Requires that a Qualifying Product has been Launched at least once to Enable this Feature’
And Bridge does open up RAW files OK
    Try this
    1.        In bridge, hit the ctrl + Alt key together and double click the .JPG image, this should open in Camera RAW (but only the one image clicked, not multiple files.
    or
    2.    Open Photoshop
    Go to File.....
    Browse in MIniBridge.........
    Browse for folder containing images..............
Find image, right click and open in camera RAW
(if you wish to open multiple files,  when a number of images have been selected,  the Camera Raw menu disappears when you right click), however, hold down the Alt + Crtl key together (Windows) and double click any of the highlighted images, they will all open in Camera RAW as they should do.

  • Opening files in ACR from Lightroom

I am looking for the way to open JPEG and CR2 files in Adobe Camera Raw from Lightroom.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You can't, or at least not easily. Would you like to explain why you want to do that? Remember that the Develop module in Lightroom uses the same processing engine as ACR, so not sure what would be gained by being able to open files into ACR directly from Lightroom.

I have a Mini.mac using OS X 10.3.9 and am unable to open TIFF files. I am particularly interested in opening TIFF attachments from my E-mails. I have downloaded Graphic Converter but can't get it to do the job, neither will Preview. Can anyone please tell me whether there is an easy way to make my machine open TIFF files? And if so, a simple explanation (because I'm a simple man) of how to do it would be greatly appreciated.

kbwolf, you'll probably want to go to http://www.mactopia.com to do a search for issues with PowerPoint, Excel and Word as those are Microsoft products.
