Opening up a FCP project in an older version of FCP

I started working on a project in FCP 7 and now I have to finish it in an older FCP! Is there anyway to do this without recapturing the whole thing??? Any advice/help would be appreciated! thank you!

I'm not kidding. It's easier and cheaper to upgrade the other machine.

  • Problems using projects created in older versions of iMovie

    I have a few projects created in older versions of iMovie, as far back as version 2 as well as more recent versions. Most of those projects are finished and I want to burn them to DVD again, but a couple of them could bear a little touch up editing. These projects are precious movies of our kids and hard to replace. Although I could probably find the original video, I put many hours of work into creating these projects.
    In any case, when I open up an old project, I get a warning that goes something like this: "The project was saved with an older version of iMovie. Opening it in this version will cause it to be upgraded, which will make it unreadable by older versions. Are you sure you want to open it?"
    I clicked okay, thinking "sure, I don't need to play it in an older version. I have iMovie HD."
    However, now when I play my old iMovie project, there are a few problems. For example, one original movie's title was over black. When I play the movie, I get a completely white screen and no title. Also, in another movie, when viewing the movie in full screen, the transitions were replaced by a black screen (although the transitions were there when I viewed the movie in the iMovie window). Basically, there are problems cropping up here and there.
    I need to do some more experimenting with all this to more fully understand how many problems there are. I don't know if the projects I opened in iMovie HD are now "broken" since I "upgraded" them with iMovie HD (when prompted to save the project's changes when quitting, I said NO, don't save changes).
    I don't know if I should use older versions of iMovie to view and burn to DVD these projects. (I still have iMovie 2 and 3, but not 4 or 5. I don't know if older versions would even work on my Quad G5 with OS 10.4.7.) I also don't know if the older versions of iMovie would work with the current version of iDVD. How can I tell which version of iMovie was originally used for a given project? How can I find iMovie 4 or 5 if I need it?
    I also wonder if projects I make with iMovie HD can be opened by future versions of iMovie, or if I should export them as Quicktime or something to be safe.
    As I start to look into this further, I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, and experiences that you may be able to offer. I need to get these movies back to their former selves, when they looked good!

    (when prompted to save the project's changes when
    quitting, I said NO, don't save changes).
    Excellent! That should leave you in pretty good shape. More below.
    I don't know if I should use older versions of iMovie
    to view and burn to DVD these projects. (I still have
    iMovie 2 and 3, but not 4 or 5. I don't know if older
    versions would even work on my Quad G5 with OS
    10.4.7.)
    The old versions of iMovie will run just fine in today's OSX. (But not iMovie 2 if it was the version that ran in Classic instead of Mac OSX.)
    I run versions 2,3,4,5 and 6 today. Problems are minimal.
    I also don't know if the older versions of
    iMovie would work with the current version of iDVD.
    That's not a problem unless your old iMovie projects contain chapters. If you tell iMovie 3 to create a new iDVD project, it might not work. You might not be able to transfer the chapter information to the newer version of iDVD.
    (I just tested iMovie 3 to iDVD 6 and everything worked just fine.)
    Except for iMovie 2, all old versions of iMovie stored a small QuickTime reference movie in the project folder. If you can't get an old version of iMovie to play nice with iDVD, drag that movie into the iDVD window.
    How can I tell which version of iMovie was originally
    used for a given project?
    Drop the project file (discussed below) onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock. The version of iMovie that last saved the project is shown in the first few lines of the project file.
    iMovie 5 used an entirely different project file format, the pList format. The top of the project file will look like this in TextEdit:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    How can I find iMovie 4 or
    5 if I need it?
    eBay?
    I also wonder if projects I make with iMovie HD can
    be opened by future versions of iMovie, or if I
    should export them as Quicktime or something to be
    safe.
    We can never assume any new version of iMovie will be able to understand all features of a older project. It's always smart to make a backup.
    There can be problems Apple can't anticipate. There may be third-party software used to create titles, transitions and special effects, plug-ins not installed with the new version or (more often, incompatible). The fonts installed on our Mac may have changed too. There's lots of features that can't be anticipated. I've never had a problem converting projects, but I never use third-party add-ons and special fonts.
    As I start to look into this further, I would
    appreciate any comments, suggestions, and experiences
    that you may be able to offer. I need to get these
    movies back to their former selves, when they looked
    good!
    My guess is it should be possible to restore the projects back to their original state.
    Note that when imovie 5/6 converts an older project, it does NOT create a true iMovie HD project. Instead of creating an iMovie package, it retains the project FOLDER format. It places new iMovie HD elements inside the old project folder instead of converting it to a package.
    When converting the project it changes the old project file name to "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project", then creates a NEW project file with the plist format, having the name "Sample Project Name.iMovieProj". (There may NOT be the .iMovieProj extension.) When you save the new project, it adds a new project file "Sample Project Name.~iMovieProj". Note the tilde. The tilde file is a backup of the project file as it was when last saved in iMovie HD.
    For our purposes, ignore the iMovie HD project files. We'll use the file ".iMovie2Project" to restore the project. (The extension is the same for all old versions of iMovie, not just iMovie 2.)
    • In the Finder, Duplicate the entire project folder. Work on the copy.
    • Open the project folder in the Finder.
    • Discard the "Cache" folder, the "Shared Movies" folder, the "Audio Waveforms" folder and the two iMovie HD project files. (Some of those items may not yet exist yet because you didn't save the converted project.)
    • Drop the "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project" file onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock to get the version. Close it.
    • Remove the ".iMovie2Project" extension, if you want.
    • Launch that version of iMovie. Drop the "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project" file icon on the iMovie icon in the Dock. With luck, the project should open normally. It's possible any third-party plug-ins used to create the project may not be available. If they aren't available, there might still be problems.
    • Move your unconverted projects to folders that say which version of iMovie created them. To open them in the future, drop the project icon on the appropriate version of iMovie.
    If all this fails, there is another way to do the editing you want. That is to import the project.mov file that's inside the converted project folder to a new iMovie HD project. That will deliver the video and audio of the original project as a single clip. Use that to re-edit the project. The name of the movie is "Sample Project Name.mov".
    (The movie is a QuickTime reference movie, with no video and audio of its own, just pointers to the files in the Media folder. So long as the Media folder hasn't changed, it can play the original project as last saved.)
    Importing the project.mov won't work with iMovie 2 projects, however, for iMovie 2 didn't store a project.mov file in the project folder.
    Even if you end up importing the project.mov, you still may want to "unconvert" the project as described above.
    Hope I haven't skipped a step. Let me know if you bump your head on something.

  • Encore Projects built on older version does not open in new Encore

    I have built many projects on older version of Encore 1.5.
    They will not open in CS5 version of Encore.
    What is a poor guy supposed to do? How can I open these Encore files and make another copy? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.

    Also, are you on the same platform with CS5, that you were on with 1.5, or did you perhaps switch to a Mac?
    Good luck,

  • CS6 project readable in older version

    Hi,
    Is there a way I can export a version of a CS6 project, so that that someone with a older copy can view it.?
    I thought I read somewhere there was a way, but couldn't find it.
    Thanks is advance.
    Michael

    It was mentioned before. Following is a copy of what was in the reference, although I do not have the reference:
    Since PrPro project file is an XML document, you can open it up in any script editor (e.g. in Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit) or just text editor, find Version="25" in the fourth row and replace it with Version="24":
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <PremiereData Version="3">
    <Project ObjectRef="1"/>
    <Project ObjectID="1" ClassID="62ad66dd-0dcd-42da-a660-6d8fbde94876" Version="24">
    Although in most cases this works just fine and much better than exporting to FCP XML or whatever, bear in mind: no warranty, everything is at your own peril.
    Note:    Version "25" is PPro 6
                Version "24" is PrPro 5.5
                Version "22" is likely PrPro 5 or less

  • How can I get the Index tabs to show for each page that is open in the window like on the older versions. I close a window and it says I have tabs open but the tabs are not visible. How do I set it like the older versions? This was easy to manage

    The index tabs were on some kind of toolbar just below the bookmark toolbar and you could see what was open in multiple tabs. I'm not referring to rolling over the Firefox icon for the Windows 7 thing, that's a pain. These index tabs were in plain sight. No matter what I try in Firefox 8, they won't appear.

    the tabs were move to above the navigation bar, where the menu bar was. They hardly look like tabs there, but you may have turned off the tabs bars. View (Alt>V) > Toolbars > Tabs Bar
    I think the solutions would really prefer though would be
    You can make '''Firefox 8.0''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • 9.0.1 won;t allow a pdf to open without locking up; I want an older version

    After downloading 9.0.1 I can't open a pdf I was previously able to open. Even worse, once I try, everything on the page becomes immune to my cursor and when I close the browser and try to reopen, even hours later, I'm told Firefox is already running.
    Since I don't even like this version already, (doesn't show progress of download) what I really need to know is how to get the previous version back.

    Tried it on both 9.0.1 and 3.5.17 after I dumped the new one. Still doesn't work but it might be the particular pdf giving the problem although it opens just fine on Chrome and IE. Guess I'll make Chrome my default.

  • Cannot open my PPRO CC project anymore

    Hello everybody,
    Premiere Pro CC crashed during my work on a big project (french TV show). When I tried to reopen my project, Premiere start normally, begin opening the project (orange bar loading) and when the orange bar is approximatively arround 20% of loading, Premier hangs and nothing happend. So I can't open my project anymore.
    - I've checked my Auto save and they are too old to start over from
    - I tried to unzip my corrupted PRPROJ file (rename XXX.zip and extract, then add .xml extension) and open the extracted xml in XML Wrench. Run the integrity tests in XML wrench and everything is ok.
    - I tried the MAC software "Pro Maintenance Tool" from Digital Rebellion to repair my project. The software tells it's repair but the new project doesn't open, exactly as the old one...
    - I tried to import the corrupted project in a blank new one -> start loading then freeze
    - I tried to open the windows corruped project in a Mac version, on an other disk, without medias : same problem.
    - I'm trying to scan the delete file in my project folder hoping that PR has left some footprints of any temporary files while saving my corrupted project, before the crash...
    I'm completely lost and can't afford to spend more time trying to recover my project. Does anybody have an idea to save my life ? ...
    My corrupted project can be downloaded here : http://we.tl/B2SsrfApdQ
    I home someone can help me... otherwise I will have to redo all my work
    THANK YOU !!
    noar
    My configuration :
    Premiere Pro CC 7.1
    Windows 8.1
    PS : Why my autosave are so old ? From yesterday... It's configured to save every 15 mins and keep 20 copies. I've got only 5

    noar,
    I have completely flushed my machine of all things adobe, including flash and acrobat. I first followed this page for the cleaner tool, which I have used before:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation -problems.html
    Choose clean everything for all adobe products.
    I also used (for mac):    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows. html    to remove flash player...not certain if that was necessary, but I figured there are likely some shared directories that I would be deleting, so I let the adobe product do the job before I did it manually.
    From there, I went as far as removing all adobe system/user libraries. I first copied those files to a seperate drive prior to deleting them.  I also copied the media cache files prior to deletion so that my footage would not need to re-conform on reopening the project files. I am osx, so the paths will differ, but I believe from memory, that the adobe library filestructure is very much the same on both platforms.
    From there, I ran a disk utility (defrag), recycled my machine, re-installed creative cloud, then premiere, after effects, photoshop, bridge, extention manager, and audition.
    After the full re-install, my saved project files (pre-'undo' crash, or reopened from crash and saved) opened much faster than before, peak files and conform files ran much faster. The software is much more responsive.  I have not experienced an 'undo' issue as of yet and i will certainly update if I do. However, the Adobe QT32 Server is still on lockdown, so that will take further involvement with the adobe engineers to understand what that issue causes or doesn't. Also, the copy I had saved of a 'crashed' file tried to open just the same, so I'm considering that file corrupt and have removed it from my system, as well as all associated autosaves.
    Hopefully you are back to editing! What's your show called?
    Cheers.

    Help! I can't restore projects from an older version of Aperture. Does anyone know how to work around this please?

    from an older version of Aperture
    Which older version? An Aperture 3 version or an earlier version?

  • Since upgrading to the newest version of Firefox, it crashes upon opening everytime. I have tried re-instaling it, as well as creating a new user profile with no results. Older versions seem unaffected.

    Firefox 6.0.1 crashes upon opening every time. Have re-installed older versions that work fine.

  • Sync fail - files accessed via app always older versions

    Hi, I have a 2TB My Cloud device and various Android devices running the My Cloud App. I have the app set to auto-sync every 120mins however when accessed via the app my files are always older versions, often by a couple of months. The time stamp suggests sync has occured but when I open the file it is clearly an older version.  No other error messages or obvious issues. Any ideas? ThanksStuart

    Welcome to the WD Community,
    If you access the drive directly from a pc, are you able to see the recent versions of the files?
