Opening windows encrypted flash drive on mac

I had to encrypt my flash drive on a windows computer at my work, and now I can't see any of my files on it when I open it with my mac! Is there no way you can switch between the two?

  • Best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

format flash drive in Exfat for transferring files between Mac and Pc.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro

In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro?

To do what? Yes you can connect a USB flash drive to the system and if it has the Recovery HD files on it you can boot from it. If it has the OS X install files on it you can boot from it. If it is large enough to contain a Time Machine backup on it you can restore your system from it.
So what do you want to do with the USB thumb drive?

  • Saving and Opening files from Flash Drive Mac to Windows Computer

    Hi!
I recently purchased a generic Flash drive (2gb). I am having problems saving things on it. Sometimes when i drag a file to the flash drive icon it doesn't load properly or transfers well. I try opening it and it says: "FILE ERROR
Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." Some documents do open well. I also tried opening files on a windows computer and it says it has to be formated. I format it and of course everything deletes.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks

    OK. I did.
But here is the problem, it still doesn't save certain file on the flash drive. Most of the files are either jpg.,cwk.,pdf., or mov.
The mov. won't even play. It works fine when i save files from a windows computer, but not when i save from my mac.
I really have no idea why its doing this. I am aware that certain file can't be opened from a mac to a window, but i just don't know why, when i place a file into the flash drive icon and try to re-open it, it says the error message again (On my mac).
    Thanks.

  • Nano as a flash drive between Mac and windows

I intended to use the nano as a flash drive. I use Apple at home, but have to use windows at work. My other flash drives have no problem moving files between both. But when I connected the nano at work, Windows gave me some initialize message. Would that delete my data on nano? I just disconnected and wait for your help.
How can I use the nano as a flash drive between my mac and windows at work?

Check what the iPod's format is; if the iPod nano is in Mac format, it can't be used on a PC which doesn't have third-party software such as MacDrive installed onto it. Initializing or restoring your iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Formatting a USB flash drive for Mac OS X Leopard & Windows XP

I'm pretty new to Mac, so forgive me if this seems a very basic question.
How do I format a USB flash drive so that it can be seen by both an Imac running Mac OS X Leopard and a PC running Windows XP?
If one or other machine can't see the drive it makes transferring files really frustrating.
    Your advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can either use Windows or OSx to format the flash drive to FAT32. This will allow you to read and write from OSx and Windows. If you just bought the flash drive then double check before you format as it may already be formatted to FAT32.
Use Disk Utility from OSx to format your flash drive OR from windows, click on *My Computer* and then highlight the drive letter and choose File from the top menu and then Format.

  • Hybrid flash drive: Bootable Mac, but still readable on Windows. Possible?

I love the idea of having a bootable OS X installation thumb drive, but would also like to use another partition on that same thumb drive to transfer files between Windows machines.
A bootable OS X drive must be partitioned GUID Partition Table (GPT) - but every time I've tried to read a FAT32 partition on that drive under Windows (even if I've wiped the drive, and that's the only partition there), it's failed to even see the drive.  Very frustrating.
It appears that Windows boxes can only see drives with Master Boot Record (MBR) as the partition scheme; GPT completely stymies most such machines (e.g. photo-printing kiosks in drug stores).
So: Is is possible at all to have a single thumb drive with multiple partitions, which contain one partition which is bootable on the Mac, and another partition which can make files visible to Windows machines?

Glad to hear that newer Windows versions don't suffer this limitation - but I have yet to see a Windows machine in common use in the expected environments, which is running anything beyond XP.  Again, my main examples would be photo-printing kiosks in stores, and similar. "Lowest-common-denominator" certainly seems to apply.
And, agreed that flash drives are incredibly cheap - but I really didn't want to carry 2 around, if I could use a single one.  I have been investigating possibly using a dual-sided implementation, such as:
        http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FPYLHY/
I had seen some references to "hybrid MBR" recently, but they were always accompanied with significant caveats regarding reliability.  If you believe this might be worth pursuing, though, I'm game for trying.  Any pointers on step-by-step guides to result in a drive in the form needed?
    1) Bootable OS X Lion install/recovery partition
    plus
    2) General data partition (I do not care about bootabillity into Windows)

  • Transferring photos from a USB flash drive to Mac Lion

I managed to salvage some photos from my old Windows Vista laptop and get them onto a small flash drive, before my laptop pegged out.
But when I plug it into the USB port on the Mac, I dont see any Icon and no recognition of it.
How do I find it and get the photos into Iphoto ? or is it not possible to transfer photos from a flash drive to a Mac ?

you open finder it's the dark blue and light blue 1/2 faces
there you go to the usb drive and mark the photos and copy them to where you wish
on the mac hd and then add them to iphone should you wish

  • When to format a USB flash drive to Mac O?

I use thumb drives to transfer files from on computer/location to another, and never had a problem with drives that formatted FAT-32. Should I have been formatting these drives to Mac OS? Under what circumstances should a USB flash drive be formatted to Mac OS? What's the rule of thumb (no pun intended)?

File formats aren't compatible based on filesystem. It's just data to the filesystem. Compatibility is at the application level, which is where the files are opened and read. Any file can be put onto any drive, assuming it is within the filesystems limitations (i.e. FAT32's 4GB size limit).

  • Flash drive on Mac Mini

Got an unusual error command with a flash drive on the Mac Mini -- "Needs mass power or plug into USB port"
Yet the flash drive worked just fine on a much older Mac Book.
    What's up with that?

Some cheaper large flash drives abide by the Chinese 7W standard, which isn't actually a standard, but just a common breach of standard that the Chinese have been doing. This is when instead of drawing 5W for normal operation, they draw 7. This used to be the cause of many a bug and problem on Windows of old, as one port drawing 7w could deprive other ports of power and even damage the USB ports altogether. When hardware manufacturers, (including Intel, who make much of the newer Macs) realized, they made many othier desktop products able to handle 7w each but simply limited the laptops to 5w per port for power efficiency.
Seeing as every Mac barring the Mac Pro line is composed of mostly laptop grade parts (Apple likes the power efficiency, and it gives them more room to design), most if not all current Macs are limited to 5w of power.

  • How can i open windows extension .contact on my mac

I had all my contact on my pc, but it was infected by virus and it doesnt work anymore. I'm trying import the contacts from my flash drive to my mac, but it does not work. the files are unreadable. I guess because of the extension .contact. What can i do to get my contacts?

Download the free version of Flip4Mac.  If that does not work, do a Google search for players that will open a .wimp file on a Mac.

  • U3 flash drives on mac OS

how can we avoid delays and bugs/problems on using U3 capable USB flash drives on a mac?
am planning to buy a 4gb flash drive and most of them now comes with the U3 technology, would i be encountering a lot of problems with it when i use it on a mac?
    thanks.

You will have no problems using that drive with a Mac. The only thing is the U3 applications only run under Windows, so they won't launch on your Mac. No big deal, the storage of files will still work just fine.
