Opening wpd files in Macintosh Office 2004

I have a number of old wpd docs. Is there any way to convert them within Microsoft Word for Mac? Or some other way? Thanks,

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
have a look here for a recipe: http://www.usao.edu/infoservices/macwpdconverter.html
It involves downloading AbiWord, a free text-processor program.
Good Luck

  • No file locking in office 2004 with local user

A user shares his home folder on Mac OS X 10.5.8. This user has a Excel file open in Office 2004. When an other user opens the same file using AFP file sharing there is no message warning the user the file is being modified by the local user.
All software is up-to-date. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
This problem does not occur in Office 2008 with 10.6 clients.

  • How to open .snp files with Microsoft Office 2007 installed? It works with MS Office 2003 but not with MS Office 2007!

I have MS Office Pro Plus 2007 installed on my computer. I also have MS Office 2003 installed on another computer. Snapshot viewer is installed on both. My work snapshot files works with MS Office Access 2003 but not recognized by MS Office Access 2007. It would not allow me to save them either! Is it a problem with FireFox (3.6.8)? However, I do not have problem opening them up using IE7/8 on both computers. Any ideas? Thanks.

Are you clicking a download link from an email message on an OWA or webmail site? Do you get the open/save dialog for the .snp files? In that case, you should be able to associate them with the Snapshot viewer. If Firefox does not remember this and you have to do it each time, it usually indicates that the server is not sending a specific content type, just the generic "this is some binary content" content type.

  • Office for Mac 2011 - can't open old files

I am currently on Mac OS X v10.6.8.  I recently installed Office for Mac 2011.  I cannot open some of my old files.  I think the ones that use the old file names, e.g. .doc and .xls, rather than .docx and .xlsx.
Can anyone explain how I can open these files in my Office for Mac 2011?
    Many thanks!

The free LibreOffice will open them, and it's the most cross platform office program (Linux, OS X and Windows versions)

  • Should I uninstall Office 2004 for Mac after installing Office 2011 on new iMac ?

Replacing an aging G5 with a refurb 2011 iMac. The G5 has Office 2004 on it. When I migrate to the new iMac, do I need to move the Office 2004 to the new machine to not lose any documents ? And then unistall it on the new machine once I have Office 2011 on board ? Do I bother uninstalling it ?
Haven't had to migrate to a new computer in a while, so any suggestions are appreciated. I also have TM and a clone of the G5.
    Thanks.

This is exactly what I did. After downloading Office 2011 and opening some of my old Office 2004 files to make sure they were ok, I trashed the Office 2004. Everytime I opened an old file it asked if I wanted to save it the the new Office. I did. It's been three years now and all my old files work perfectly.
    Good luck with yours,

  • Microsoft Office 2004 crashes

    Hi all.
I encountered a strange problem with my MS Office 2004: when i try to save file the program crashes and the following messages appear in the console log:

I can't understand how the MS Word is related with DivX and QuickTime at the file saving stage... The problem appears with any file's content and even with empty file
My MS Office 2004 has all patches and updates. I will appreciate any suggestion in solving the problem.
    Thanks.

It appears that the DivX encoder is Intel only and installs itself at a low level in the OS. That is causing PPC applications such as Office 2004 to crash. You would probably only see crashes in PPC-only applications such as Office 2004. There could have been some issues when you upgraded to 10.5.3, but those problems are entirely due to your 3rd party system extension, not 10.5.3.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Can't open .cwk files in Office 2004 - Help

Hi, imac intel 24. Running latest software. I have several .cwk files from back when. Now, I can't open them. I believe they are spreadsheets but Office 2004 won't open them. Any ideas? I always get an error saying I need a 3rd party app. Thanks in advance.

Word 2004 can open AppleWorks word processing documents. I have never been able to get Excel to open an AppleWorks spreadsheet though I've seen a couple of other users say they could. Nothing other than AppleWorks can open AppleWorks draw, paint or database files.
You can try icExcel from Panergy Software which can open AppleWorks 5 & 6 spreadsheets. It doesn't save as Excel, but will save as text.
The best option I can think of is to get AppleWorks for your Mac. It will run very well on an Intel Mac.
Since this question is really about opening AppleWorks files, the better place to post would have been the AppleWorks forum. When a question is about using Office, I would normally suggest posting in the Microsoft newsgroup, but I doubt you'd find many users who know anything about AppleWorks.

I have office 2004 on my Imac.  Cannot open .xlsx files.  Anyone know of a patch for this

Mac users using Word 2004 who receive a Word 2008 for Mac, (or Word 2007 for Windows) document, will not be albe to read this without having the Open XML Converter installed, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.
    Go to this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
and click on the right under Most Popular, 'Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0.2'
This opens a window at the bottom of the page. Scroll that to the bottom and click on English.dmg, and it will download for you as a disk image, which can be installed in the usual way.
After installation you can open and read .xml formatted Word 2008 documents in Word 2004.
Update: This link  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976831  takes you to a newer version 1.1.3 (released Nov 10, 2009).

Visit  Microsoft  at this site download converter.Install drag XML file and it creates a standard .doc, .xls or .ppt copy on your desktop.
Its free and works a charm.
NO need to spend a penny/cent

  • My imac was running snow leopard and was upgraded to Mt. Lion. My Microsoft Office for Mac now will not open.  SO since my Office was 2004, I just purchased Office for Mac 2011.  Do I delete the icons before loading Office 2011 OR after I load 2011?

Upgraded my Imac to Mt. Lion and now the Microsoft Office icons will not open WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, or ENTOURAGE.  I just pruchased on Ebay
OFFICE 2011 since my old version was 2004.  DO I REMOVE THE OLD ICONS BEFORE LOADING OFFICE 2011 RO AFTER I LOAD IT???
    THANKS, DR PEPPERMINT

Office 2011 will install in a separate folder. But do not install Office 2011 until you remove Office 2004. It comes with its own uninstalled located in the MS Office folder. Only use the uninstaller to get rid of it. Then install Office 2011.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Word in Office 2004 OS 10.3.9 crashes every time I open a document...?

    Hi,
I"m not sure this is the appropriate forum for this, but I thought I'd try here...
I've been running Office 2004 on my G4 for many with no problem. I do very little, occasional Word documents and some Excel. I've stayed at OS 10.3.9 for ages, since I'm stuck there because of my Pro Tools hardware. I change nothing with my system unless something goes wrong. At some point about six months ago, for no apparent reason, every time I tried to open any Word document on the Mac, I would get a message from Word saying that corruption was detected in the document, and would I like to attempt recovery. I click "Ok", then Word crashes. This happens on any and all Word documents. These documents open fine on other computers, Mac or PC. They are not corrupt. But I suppose something is? I Googled around and tried a fix deleting the "FontCache(11)" file from Microsoft/Preferences, but that didn't work. I installed the two major service packs for Office 2004. No go.
If anyone has any tips for what to try next I'd appreciate it! Thanks - Steve

There should be some kind of evidence of the cause of crashes, in general
within the system's Console utility; where logs of several types activity are
located. These may be hard to decipher since they are written in geek.
    You may try something other than Office 2004, for the occasional document;
since Open Office or Neo Office is updated more often and they are free.
Also consider a second hard disk drive where a later OS X version can live.
Fonts may be a fair place to look; since they can be a cause of odd behavior.
However in an older system, other things may be at work to make a problem.
Not sure what else to say; except the symptom includes use of MS Office...
The Console logs (or in some cases, see System Profiler's log files) may
be a way to see if there are any clues left behind, from the crashes.
Do you have a backup clone of the computer and its contents? It may be
a good idea to take some time and investigate the issue(s) and maybe go
into the computer and do housekeeping. With a complete backup you could
check the computer's hard disk drives, and move everything on/off the Mac.
The holistic approach can help, if one has time to do several things at once.
    And carefully, in any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!
