OpenJPA support for MaxDB?

I'm not finding anything on the internet that shows that MaxDB will work with OpenJPA. If it isn't supported, is there a persistance abstraction like OpenJPA (or Hibernate which unfortunately does not have an acceptable license so we can't use it)?
      Thanks,

Hi Chris,
yeah, that note needs a small change (UTF-16 changed into USC-2).
Indeed, a 2TB DB under UTF-8 needs about 3TB under USC-2. So yes, one would need more space for MaxDB, but the TCO is not only dependent on the cost of the SAN. Easy admin, being reorganisation free are only a few of the examples which can drastically lower the TCO of a system. That added to the low cost of the MaxDB software itself <i><b>can</b></i> make a difference.
Because of other topics, which I cannot go into and currently have a higher priority, the UTF-8 support is planned long-term.
I'm not sure if this is allowed, but this (german) article is quite an interesting read:
<a href="http://www.computerwoche.de/produkte_technik/storage/581295/">http://www.computerwoche.de/produkte_technik/storage/581295/</a>
With the Unicode / ASCII mixture I just meant that for example a Unicode WebAS contains ASCII data aswell. Another example: in MDM there's an explicit distinction between the ASCII and UNICODE data. Our interfaces support all three (ASCII, UTF-8 and UCS-2).

    Hi Clovis,
currently, SAP does not sell MaxDB support to non-SAP customers.
You might want to take a look at the ODMG, maybe they can provide what you're looking for: [Open MaxDB Group (OMDG) u2013 The User Group|http://www.open-maxdb-group.org].
    Other option: this forum.

  • Unicode-UTF8-Support for MaxDB?

    Hello,
according to general information MaxDB just supports UTF16. If one is
facing the decision to migrate an Oracle 9.2 Non-Unicode-DB to either a Unicode-UTF16-MaxDB or a Unicode-UTF8-Oracle-DB, the answer probably would be to go for a Unicode-UTF8-Oracle-DB because the SAN costs used should be app. half of the MaxDB-SAN-costs.
Is UTF8-Support soon ready for MaxDB?
    Thanks for your reply.

  • MaxDB support for SAP XI 3.0 SP 18 (NW04)

    Hi,
    I need an advice.
We are using SAP XI 3.0 SP 18 (NW04) on MaxDB 7.5.0.046. Because of some issues with the database we are considering upgrading to 7.6. However, it is not clear if MaxDB 7.6 is supported for NW04.
    service.sap.com/pam -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NetWeaver 04 suggests:
    1. tab Database platforms
SAP KERNEL 6.40 64-BIT UNICODE  Maintained until 31.03.2013; MaxDB
supported database version: MaxDB 7.5 64-BIT
    2. tab Process integration (PI/XI)
supported database version: MaxDB 7.6 64-BIT
QUESTION IS: which tab (1,2) should I trust regarding supported database version for XI?

    Hi Lars,
I understand that its a clumpsy over here, but i already have raised an OSS message and SAP said, that they cannot support this issue with backint. If you can provide me with an email id, i can send you the log files which would be easy to read.
My issue is that am not able run backup for maxdb of content server 640 using the backint tool.
I have created the configuration file and the parameter file as per the specifications from http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/a9/8a1ef21e4b402bb76ff75bb559a98a/content.htm and http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/50/075205962843f69b9ec41f34427be7/content.htm.

  • Professional uses for MaxDB (Survey?)

    All,
I'm trying to decide if I should invest time in getting familiar with MaxDB.
In searching dice.com for example, there were only three matches - statistically insignificant.
So beyond personal enjoyment, or skunk-works IT development (i.e. not used broadly as support to an end-user system), can some of you say how much MaxDB professional activity there is?
Since SAP uses DB2 for its own IT operations, I suspect MaxDB is a balance to over-priced DB's, but not a commercial contender. (Not debating any technical merits).
And I am distinguishing MaxDB as a non-SAP install DB, that is, used as a true development platform.
I would appreciate direct answers, as well as pro/con synopsis.
My hope is that being skilled in MaxDB may be a niche career, but not so niche as to be fruitless.
    Thanks to all who respond.
PS. My past includes time as a Oracle DBA/Forms developer, so I'm not worried about my ability to learn MaxDB.

Yes, we do, and we have been doing so for half a decade by now, without too many problems. We're a German SME working in the field of dedicated document and drawing management for mid-sized and large construction projects and, so far, are happy to have most of the larger construction companies at least in Germany among our customers. So far, we run something next to 200 significant projects on our system, serving something next to 10 millions of documents with pretty complex metadata structures attached to them, hosting something around 1.5 TB in file data and > 10 GB in a MaxDB database instance. Numbers not that much impressive to a large-site system administrator, I guess, but not bad for a mid-sized company.
    > And I am distinguishing MaxDB as a non-SAP install DB, that is, used as a true development platform.
    > I would appreciate direct answers, as well as pro/con synopsis.
    Pros:
    - Generally, after running it in production throughout these years, I have to say that MaxDB is, technically speaking, a pretty "friendly" platform, easy to get started with, easy to get work done. Install it, create a database instance, read through the documentation (which is rather good) - period. Comparing things to Oracle especially, the learning curve to get acquainted with tools and technologies is way less challenging.
    - Tooling, both talking about the "old" (DBMGUI/SQLGUI) and the "new" ones (DBM Studio) is pretty straightforward and usable, and so are the command line tools. Especially important to me is GNU/Linux support on both servers and clients, and, again, here we do not have any trouble running MaxDB on CentOS (server) and dev workstations (Ubuntu).
    - Runtime management is a pretty straightforward thing at least in our environment, also talking about things like backup/restore or keeping a "standby" instance which is reasonably up-to-date.
    - The MaxDB crowd in this forum, even though not knowing answers to all your problems, generally can be considered pretty kind and helpful.
    - Of course, compared to Oracle DBMS, pricing and licensing is an interesting aspect especially running in load situations on "large" machines. It's a straightforward, robust, usable DBMS that just works.
    Cons:
    - Only technical "con" I can think of: MaxDB generally falls short in terms of support for most of the "newer" development technologies and toolings. Overally, no matter whether talking about JPA 2.0 / EclipseLink, Ruby On Rails, Grails or whatever of these new "buzzwords" you might come up with, I have continuously experienced MaxDB to be way more of a problem to get started with than, in example, Oracle, mySQL or JavaDB (I'm a Java developer so this is my primary environment).
    - SAP platform strategy related to "non-SAP" customers doesn't seem all too clear to me honestly. Looking at that, I see MaxDB obviously being developed mainy with the focus of serving as a "batteries included" database for SAP solutions, leaving the "community edition" and its users merely as a "side effect" which is not supported in any way whatsoever. From that point of view, as posted here a couple of times before, sometimes I wished SAP to provide a slim, sane package of licensing+support affordable for small and mid-sized companies... At the moment, the only "commercial grade" support I found is Infolytics in Cologne, Germany, who are, off-heart, extremely good at doing so.
    - Compared to, in example, an Oracle 11gR2, the amount of technology that comes with the database itself is way more limited: Looking at things like Oracles Database Filesystem, integrated full text indexing (including things like soundex() / fuzzy searches), the "XMLDB" feature which is pretty neat, the integrated Java runtime (allowing in example the database to directly expose data access components via SOAP / web services) and so on, you might find out that MaxDB functionality is way more limited. If you just want to have a reliable, stable RDBMS, this is something you can merrily forget about. Then again, in some situations it is additional value provided by the database in case of Oracle which might keep you from having to either develop solutions on your own or throw in additional third party stuff i.e. for full-text indexing.

    Kristian

  • Disk Volume cost for MaxDB 7.6 and 7.8

    Hello, everyone
I heared that MaxDB 7.8 uses UTF-8 to save characters while 7.6 uses UTF-16. Therefore I made a comparasion to prove this.
To be disappointed, the result did not support it. The experiment procedures were as follows:
    1. Create a DB with same disk volume size(30MB) and log volume size(20MB) and default char code as Unicode.
    2. Create a table with only one column of varchar(200) unicode.
    3. Insert 6000 lines of records to this table.
    4. See the data area of percentage filled.
    5. It showed that the two were nearly same and  7.6 was even less than 7.8.
So, I have the following questions:
    1. Does Maxdb 7.8 use UTF-8 to save characters?
    2. What are the feature lists for MaxDB 7.6 and 7.8?
I was asked a sap service marketplace account to login. Is this kind of information so secret?
    3. If Maxdb 7.8 uses UTF-8 , how to configure to use it?
Any reply will be highly appreciated!

    Hi,
As per the Wiki link http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/MaxDB/FAQ, section:
Bigger development request (e.g Unicode UTF-8 or page compression) that would have required man-years of effort in SAP MaxDB, are either already available in SAP In-Memory Database or will be done there
So, seems UTF-8 is not yet there in MaxDB 7.8.

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.

  • Why no SyncML-support for Harmattan??

I've used SyncML on my N95 with memotoo.com for years. Worked very well. I took it for granted that SyncML would be supported on the N9. But alas, it isn't. I find that really incomprehensible. Worse yet, CalDAV syncing with memotoo doesn't work - I don't know who's to blame for this, but on the desktop it works flawelessly so I do have a suspicion. Even worse: there is no way to sync contacts using CardDAV.
MeeGo (the true MeeGo) has SyncML-support out-of-the-box. And the N9/N950 does have SyncML-support for bluetooth.
Yes, contacts syncing is supported for Ovi. And Google. And Facebook. But I do NOT want to use those services, because of grave privacy risks and because they use yet again some proprietary protocols.
I wonder, what where they thinking at Nokia for NOT supporting some well-known open standards??
(While I'm ranting: why is there ^%@$ Facebook and GTalk-support over XMPP, but no self-defined XMPP account?? Yes, you can add such accounts from the terminal, using mc-tool, but really that's just a kick in the teeth. And where's UPnP/DLNA-support?)

Hey Guys, Did you figure out any way to do PIM sync via SyncML on N9?
I am struggling to get things moving as I come from N8.
N9 just doesnt have any way to sync calendar, tasks with Ovi. Same with Notes.

  • ISE 1.2.1 support for Yosemite?

Hello all, just curious. I see in the release notes for ISE 1.2.X that support for Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) was available via patch 12 on the ISE1.2.0 train of code. That said, I see nothing in the release notes stating any support for Yosemite for any of the patches for ISE1.2.1, the latest being patch 3 released 1 week after ISE 1.2.0 patch 12. Can anyone please advise if Yosemite is in fact supported on 1.2.1 with patch 3??
Thank you very much in advance for your help
    Jeff

    Jeff,
    OS X 10.10 is supported in ISE 1.2 p11, 1.2.1 p2 and 1.3.
Patch 12 for 1.2 and Patch 3 for 1.2.1 fix other issues for OS X 10.10, and I recommend updating to the latest patches for these fixes.

  • Apple Support for FCE HD - $200 per call???

i had what was probably a minor issue with editing in final cut express hd today. So naturally, i called applecare. They told me that it had been past the 90 days given to us for support from the point of purchase. Fine. However, the apple support representative went on to tell me that Applecare does NOT support pro applications and that i have to pay $199 per incident? I paid $299 for the product itself! Last i checked, i-pods were selling pretty well and i don't think steve jobs needs that money! Is apple serious? Where do they get off charging $200 for a ONE TIME PHONE CALL? Just because FCE HD is a "pro" application, apple can't assume that everyone who purchases this product is a "pro" from the start!
Where else am i supposed to get phone technical support for FCE HD??

These forums are here to give you technical advice. Admittedly it is not over the phone but it is FREE and lasts for ever.
Also you will have the collective knowledge of numerous people not just the one "expert" you happen to be speaking to.
