Openoffice and PC?

Hi, so I use openoffice to produce some word documents and then I want to send them to my sister who has a PC. There are various options in the "save as" area and I don't know which one will work when she goes to open the document on her PC. Most of the time she says it arrives in some strange format so I try and try again... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi solveitwithshana: I assume your sister is using Word or similar program on her PC. If so it should have no problem opening, viewing or editing a .DOC or .RTF file. Those options should be available from your Save-As list.
Good Luck

    Hi sulezyf,
    OpenOffice and Word documents have the same extension i.e .doc
    You can convert the pdf to .doc format.

  • Apache openoffice and libreoffice

    I have seen that Oracle has given openoffice to the Apache foundation. One question I have is if the libreoffice fork still necessary. It was my understanding that Oracle prevented good development of openoffice and claim too much control. But now? What's the main reason to keep to have two versions?

    They also use different licenses, so i doubt the 2 will merge again.
    You may be right but I can't prevent me to think that this is sad. How business users can be so different to individual users in regards of an office suite? (M$ sell basically the same office suite to both clients, apart some differences that do not justify a new product). As for the license, do we really need two projects for that? The LGPL as well as the apache license allows proprietary linking...
    I wonder if Linux distributions (and archlinux in particular) will now ship openoffice again. I thought after the fork that Libreoffice will have been just the continuation of openoffice while openoffice itself will die (recalling the Xorg fork of Xfree86). But now? We can't just say that the Apache foundation do everything wrong as we may have said with Oracle.
    The distros didn't all ship with OpenOffice before; Ubuntu and OpenSuSE both shipped with go-openoffice. Anyway, the OpenOffice brand took a pretty big hit, so I don't see any distros switching back.
    As far as licensing is concerned, Microsoft does make different versions of Office - Student, Professional, etc., targeting different segments. Feature segregation won't really apply here, so I am also not sure I buy the enterprise-consumer split either.

  • OpenOffice and Thunderbird

    Some time ago (a few months maybe), Thunderbird stopped letting me open OpenOffice document types by double clicking the attachment.
    Anyone know why this behavior changed and how to fix it? Obviously being able to open attachments by double clicking is very handy. I don't even know if it's Thunderbird's fault or Openoffice's fault at this point.

    Thanks! It looks like Ubuntu comes with most of the stuff I need
    already on the image. Since you are an Eclipse user, is it safe to
    assume that Eclipse runs ok on it as well?

  • OpenOffice and Rdb ODBC

    I have the Oracle Rdb Driver v3.0.2 installed on a Windows client and a User DSN connection established in the ODBC Data Source Administrator control panel applet. I can query successfully with clients like MSQuery, Excel (with the SQLREQUEST() array function), and my terminal emulator (SmarTerm 9) which comes with built-in SQL functions. However, with OpenOffice 1.0 and 1.0.1, which comes with a query builder similar to MSQuery, I cannot get a proper list of available tables once the connection is made to the remote database.
    There are 3 log files on the client which offer some clues, but it is not clear (to me) whether the Oracle driver is faulty, or it's OpenOffice that's the problem. Buried in two of the logs are SELECT statements which appear to pass invalid SQL syntax to the database, causing it to return no table names.
    The first log is generated by the ODBC Data Source Administrator itself when Tracing is enabled. It's name is SQL.LOG by default. The other two logs are CLIENT.LOG and RDBODBC.LOG, generated by SQL/Services and the driver, respectively. The first, SQL.LOG, contains the following lines at the point where OpenOffice is requesting the list of tables:
    scalc fff01057-fff017d7     ENTER SQLTablesW
              HSTMT 0314028C
              WCHAR * 0x00000000
              SWORD 0
              WCHAR * 0x00000000
              SWORD 0
              WCHAR * 0x0323FFE8 [      -3] "%"
              SWORD -3
              WCHAR * 0x0314067C [      -3] "VIEW,TA"
              SWORD -3
    scalc fff01057-fff017d7     EXIT SQLTablesW with return code 0 (SQL_SUCCESS)
              HSTMT 0314028C
              WCHAR * 0x00000000
              SWORD 0
              WCHAR * 0x00000000
              SWORD 0
              WCHAR * 0x0323FFE8 [      -3] "%"
              SWORD -3
              WCHAR * 0x0314067C [      -3] "VIEW,TA"
              SWORD -3
    The second log, produced by SQL/Services on the client, shows that the '%' wildcard has been changed to '% '. Here's the SQLTablesW call in that log:
    ROUTINE LEVEL LOG at 11:19:43 on 07-Sep-2002
    ----SQLSRV_PREPARE
    --------SQL STATEMENT
    ------------len: 233, value: SELECT '',rdb$flags,rdb$relation_name,rdb$system_fl
    ------------ag,'' FROM rdb$relations WHERE rdb$system_flag=0 AND rdb$relation_na
    ------------me LIKE '% ' ESCAPE '&' ORDER BY rdb$sy
    ------------stem_flag DESC,rdb$flags ASC,rdb$relation_name
    PROTOCOL LEVEL LOG CLIENT: write (logonly) at 11:19:43 on 07-Sep-2002
    ----PACKET LENGTH: 245
    PROTOCOL LEVEL LOG CLIENT: write (logonly) at 11:19:43 on 07-Sep-2002
    ----PACKET ID: 3, PACKET SEQUENCE: 0
    --------SQLSRV_PREPARE
    ------------SQL STATEMENT
    ----------------SQLSRV_COUNTED_BYTES, len: 233
    --------------------len: 233, value: SELECT '',rdb$flags,rdb$relation_name,rdb$s
    --------------------ystem_flag,'' FROM rdb$relations WHERE rdb$system_flag=0 AND
    -------------------- rdb$relation_name LIKE '% ' ES
    --------------------CAPE '&' ORDER BY rdb$system_flag DESC,rdb$flags ASC,rdb$rel
    --------------------ation_name
    --------END OF MESSAGE
    Finally, the RDBODBC.LOG driver log shows a similar change to the LIKE clause of the SELECT statement:
    .0X00700138: SELECT '',rdb$flags,rdb$relation_name,rdb$system_flag,'' F
    .ROM rdb$relations WHERE rdb$system_flag=0 AND rdb$relation_name LIKE '
    .% ' ESCAPE '&' ORDER BY rdb$system_flag D
    .ESC,rdb$flags ASC,rdb$relation_name
    I'm no ODBC developer, but perhaps someone can suggest why the spaces are being added?
    Thanks,
    Alder

    Unfortunately RDB and Oracle are two completely different animals, so I'm really out of my element.
    My wild, uninformed, shot-in-the-dark guess is that this has something to do with Unicode. When Unicode data is encoded as UCS-2 (Windows default encoding), ASCII characters are stored in two bytes, [ACSII value][00]. The ODBC Driver Manager is supposed to know whether a driver supports Unicode and to translate Unicode data passed through it to ASCII if that's what the driver needs. Perhaps the translation isn't happening properly here...
    If you look at the SQL.log file for the applications that work, I'm going to guess that you see the function SQLTablesA (ASCII version) being called, rather than SQLTablesW.

  • Lxde, openoffice, and fonts

    I am trying out lxde and love it (after tweaking .fonts.conf to match what I used to set in Gnome)... Only problem is now the fonts in OpenOffice are way too skinny (also jagged) and it doesn't appear to be following my .fonts.conf file. I tried playing around with the .fonts.conf file and some other tweaks found in the wiki but it still won't fall in line with other GTK apps (even export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome). go-openoffice seems to respect my settings better, but without sub-pixel rending (adequately beefy fonts but very jagged). I prefer using the openoffice-base, so I'd prefer get that back to what it was in Gnome- appearing the other GTK apps.
    Anyone have any avenues I should pursue?
    Thank you for any help.
    EDIT: Also noticed Google Chrome is acting like OO- skinny rough looking fonts. Not a big deal, I usually use Firefox anyway...

    Thanks for the heads up on the wiki in OpenOffice. I did already have an Xdefaults file, so added to that. Anyway, tried each one until I had all the recommendations in various config files- still the fonts are too skinny (even after restart).
    EDIT: Logging back into Gnome everything is fine... Arghh, I wish these font settings would be more universal and consistent

  • OpenOffice and Star Office

    Hello together,
    for several reasons i need to open StarOffice / Open Office files written in my oldfashioned Win2000 PC, especially spreadsheets, in Apple works. I tried to save them in StarOffice as excelsheets Version 5 or Version Win97/XP - but AppleWorks still crashes down or gives no response after several minutes.
    Has anybody had the same problem solved? Or any glue what to do? Data is about 23.000 music tracks from a database of Tangomusic.
    And no, i'm so happy to get rid of microsoft-stuff, there's no alternative for me to install MS-Office

    Merci beaucoup Yvan,
    for this question i see the reason in your answer.
    But i tried also other documents with only 160 rows/5
    columns. Is it also a problem, when in a spreadsheet
    file are more than one registers/tabs/spreadsheets?
    (sorry, i don't know the correct English word).
    But the idea of installing OpenOffice was also
    helpful: i will use StarOffice, if possible. My
    experience with StarOffice was a bit more stably.
    StarOffice isn't available for the Mac. On the Mac you've got a choice of OpenOffice or NeoOffice/J. Both are based on OpenOffice. The difference between the two is that OpenOffice for Mac can only run in Mac OS X's UNIX environment (aka X11). This means it cannot do the usual things you'd want to do with a Mac OS X program such as print or use your fonts. In contrast, NeoOffice/J integrates well with Mac OS X and behaves more like a Mac OS X program.

  • Openoffice and kde4 open/save dialogue

    Now that I've got this beautiful KDE4.4 desktop those dreadful gtk open/save dialogues have got to go!
    Followed the wiki but installation of gtk-qt-engine-1.1-2 rendered soffice useless - so no go there.
    There is Firefox of course but I'm hoping that there will be a 64_86 version of firefox-kde-opensuse in AUR soon. Audacity is another offender and I'm sure there are others...
    Oh, if only there were a one-for-all solution to these eye sores

    For the standard openoffice to get the KDE integration you need to have the command
    export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=KDE4
    somewhere that's getting sourced - I have it in /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh since that was mentioned in the install message. When I tried out go-openoffice a while backI think it needed the same thing or else keeps the default gtk-style.
    For gtk-kde4 I had Systemsettings - appearance - gtk syle and it gives me some drop down menus which can be set to "Use current KDE style"
    I have noticed some things look a little more KDE-like than others - for instance gimp barely looks different than it did under standard gtk styles.

  • OpenOffice and X11

    Hi,
    I just purchased a MacBook Pro. I installed X11 and then Open Office. When I run OO I have to also open X11. This brings up an xTerm window and the OO writer.
    My problem is that I do not know how to get back to the Mac window. I am stuck on a blue screen and can only restart to get back to Mac screen.
    Thanks

    Joe
    Forget OpenOffice.Install NeoOffice.No X11 needed.

  • OpenOffice and Scalable Graphics

    I've been working on a document for an RPG I'm designing, and I want to embed a diagram into the document.  Problem is, OpenOffice.org Writer won't let me embed svg files into my documents.  Dia, which I've been using to create the diagram, doesn't export to any of the vector graphics formats that Writer is able to embed.  Even worse, OpenOffice.org Draw can't import any of the vector graphics formats that Dia can export.
    What do I do?  I don't want to use raster graphics, because they don't look very nice when they're scaled.

    Well, I opened the SVG file in scribus, and it didn't import correctly.  I also tried opening it in Konqueror, to see if I could export it to postscript, and my entire system slowed to a snail's pace.  Konqueror slowly rendered the image as a series of gigantic letters, laid on top of one another.  It seems that Dia can only output broken SVG files, so I'll need to find a different method.

  • Openoffice and awesome 3

    When I use openoffice in awesome 3, scrolling through any document causes awesome to switch desktop, I have no clue what is causing this.

    I am running a dual head setup. If I run OOo on monitor2 in tab x and open any menu in OOo (menu bar or right click), then monitor1 switches to tab x as well.
    Happens since my last system update but neither OOo nor awesome3.3 were updated. And there are no special settings for OOo in rc.lua. I'm quite confused...
    edit: I just noticed Duologics link... anyway strange to me that the problem pops up right now...

  • OpenOffice and ePDFViewer only print in red, GIMP is fine

    Hi, I have this strange problem with my printer. When I try and print something with either OpenOffice or ePDFViewer they print in red. If I convert whatever document I want to print into pdf, open it in GIMP and print from there, no problems, grayscale the way I want it. I've tried printing with the settings specifically set to Grayscale but OO and ePDF still screw up. Anyone have an idea of what's going on?
    By the way it's an "HP Deskjet D2430" and I'm using the "HP Deskjet d2400 Series hpijs, 3.9.4b.10" driver.

    if that's the case, did you try printing from acroread instead? (judging from the info gathered from your link)

  • Openoffice and font rendering

    Hi,
    Does anyone know if it's possible to have openoffice render my fonts the same way as fonts are being rendered in other programs? It obviosly doesn't seem to care about the .fonts.conf file, but instead seems to have it's own rendering technique, which gives me very bad font rendering. I don't know why Openoffice has chosen to do it's own font rendering, but is there anyway to change that?
    The only option for font rendering in Openoffice is turning antialiasing on and off from a certain font size, but there's nothing about autohinter or subpixel hinting etc.
    Regards,
    Simon

    It's not any font in particular, it's all fonts that are being rendered differently than in other programs, and this can only be due to the fact that Openoffice for some reason has its own way of rendering fonts. I don't know why and I don't know how to make it render fonts the way other programs do.

  • OpenOffice and LC_*

    Today I was fiddling with the locale of my arch machine, I have set locale=pt_PT.UTF-8 in rc.conf and I've added /etc/profile.d/cust_locale.sh with
    export LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
    export LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
    because I want to see messages and application menus in english but want other things to be properly set to my locale, however I don't like my locale's decimal separator, I prefer a decimal point instead of a comma.
    The output of locale is:
    > locale
    LANG=pt_PT.UTF-8
    LC_CTYPE="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
    LC_TIME="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_COLLATE="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_MONETARY="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
    LC_PAPER="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_NAME="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_ADDRESS="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_TELEPHONE="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="pt_PT.UTF-8"
    LC_ALL=
    which confirms that things seem to be properly set and other programs (such as galculator) seem to honor this setting, however the openoffice from the repos does not seem to like this combination of LC_* and insists on using a comma as the decimal point, I have tried deleting openoffice's config directory and starting it again and there is no change.
    I haven't found any _recent_ bug reports about this so can anyone using a similar configuration confirm that LC_NUMERIC is not honored?

    i had the same problem, but reinstalling packages with pacman didn't helped me
    on strace i saw that openoffice before freeze opens ~/.recently-used
    i've try:
    chmod 0400 ~/.recently-used
    and now OpenOffice works fine
    if you want to make
    chmod 0400 ~/.recently-used
    every time when you open OpenOffice just write that line in /opt/openoffice/program/soffice script
