Opens but no window

When I open Safari. The black arrow is below the icon in the dock. I get the Safari across the top. But no window. No safari window in the right side of the dock. I've reset Safari. Emptied the cache. I've thrown out the com.apple.safari.plist and restarted. And it still will not work. Luckily I have Firefox so I could get here to post this question. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks, Dave

It seems I'm going to have to re-install the software.
You can certainly try that, but it may not solve anything. You can either do an Archive & Install with Preserve Users and Network Settings, or you can just reinstall Safari and then use Software Update to get the most recent version for Panther, which is 1.3.2.
If you choose to reinstall Safari only; this is what you need to do:
1. Quit all running programs.
2. Repair Permissions.
3. Insert your Mac OS X install/restore disc, navigate to the Optional Installs folder (if there is one), and open the Optional Installs.mpkg file.
4. Check the box to install Safari and run the installer; quit when done and eject and disc.
5. Use Software Update to bring your system current.
6. Repair Permissions.

  • Pages opened but no window appeared

    Hello,
I have problems with Pages 5.1
I tried to launch the program. It is opened but no window appears. when I clicked on the Pages icon on the dock, the menubar on top of the sceen is well the menubar of Pages. I also tried to open some documents of mine and start new document but no window comes up. When I looked in the menubar >Window I can see list of documents I tried to open + untitled documents. Even if I tried to click Bring all windows to front, nothing happen.
Does somebody have any solution to this?
Apparently it's not only Pages but also Keynote that manifests this behavior.
    Thanks in advance.

How many displays do you have?
    Are they all turned on?
Are your documents minimised to your Dock?

  • Safari 5 Opens but no window comes up? Even after I click open new window.

So i downloaded Safari 5 form the update and then from the full download install.
    My problem is...
    Safari opens.
    but no window opens.
I go to the top I click safari and go down to "Open new window"
    Still nothing.
    I click to quit safari.
It says "0,1,2,3 windows are open in safari do you want to quit anyway?"
(depending on how many times I clicked to open a new window)
but even tho it is sayign windows are open my computer doesnt show them anywhere.
    any help people?

    Hi,
Try launching Safari from your Applicatioms folder instead of the Dock.
    If that doesn't help ...
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • Facetime opens but the window doesn't appear?

Facetime opens but the window doesn't appear. I am capable of accessing the setting a preferences from the top bar but the window is still not there. The green light for the camera also turns on. I am running mountain lion with the latest updates on a macbook pro with retina display.

Yeah. Apparently there was a hardware malfunction. I took it too the apple store and they replaced the top clamshell. The repairs would have cost around $750 if it wasn't under warranty. I recommend buying AppleCare when you can.

Yosemite, messages, preferences are grayed out. It opens but the window for messages is blank. Can't click on anything.

    Hi,
You appear to have the wrong end of the stick as they say.
Just starting your computer needs certain Fonts to be present to display the text you are likely to see.
Most of those needed to do this are in the Hard Drive icon/System/Library/Fonts.
Some apps require different Fonts  and in the case of Messages this is AppleGothic (all one word) and is found in Hard Drive/Library/Fonts.
You would normally use the Apple App called Font Book to check these Fonts are working properly.
Prior to the Yosemite version of Messages (still called Messages 8 like th Mavericks version) you could change the Font use in the actual Messages in the app.
On a Character or word or Sentence basis there was the Format Menu.
There was also a Pane in th Preferences called Messages that let you choice the Font, the colour of the text and the  colour of the balloons for Out going Messages and also Overriding the incoming ones.
You can no longer do this as the Preferences Pane and the Format Menu have gone.

  • IPhoto opens but the window doesn't!

Latest version of iPhoto and it opens but the window doesn't. I've reinstalled and my photos are all there in the library but there is no window? Any ideas?

Yes the files does recreate itself immeadiately. This is new information:
The Rainbow BOD happens and I can only force quit the app.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Mail app appears to open but no windows will open in ML

I updated ML last night and my mail app will not open the main reading pane window , I get the menu bar and I can get the compose window to open but not my inbox or my mailbox folders window , not sure if the update has anything to do with it but worked fine before that.I also saw a new or different option on one of the dropdown menus that I have not seen before "rebuild mailbox database" If I remember correctly. As I said earlier the only window I can get to open is my compose window , I have restarted and even turned completley off and restarted with no success , I have not tried deleting the .plist yet because I was hoping no to have to. Any help would be appreciated.......Thanks in advance

    Which app icon is missing?
Are you sure it wasn't moved?
Have you checked on another page or in folders?
Does it show in spotlight search? (Swipe down from the center if the screen)
    Check your restrictions:
    Settings > General > Restrictions
You can also try resetting your Home Screen Layout:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout
    Delete it:
Settings > General > Usage > select the app > Delete
    and redownload:
Open the App Store > Updates > Purchased

  • Firefox opens but no window comes up--no new window, tab, etc.

My iMac, OSX 10.9.4, opens Firefox so I have all the tabs running across the top, but no window will open. None of the top selections brings a window up--new window, new tab, private window, bookmarks, history, view--nothing.

There is no window, or the window is blank?
Occasionally the Firefox window will get off screen. Here are three different
approaches to getting that window into view. One of them should work!
'''Firefox Window "off screen" — Arrow Key Method'''
If you know that Firefox is off to a particular side, you can use the arrow keys
to move it back on screen. You only need to move it far enough to be able to
click the title bar and then you can drag it the rest of the way.
Make the Firefox tile active on the task bar and press this key combination
    to start moving the window:
    Alt+Spacebar > M
(To clarify, that's Alt+Spacebar to open the window control menu, then the
letter m to start moving the window.)
Press the arrow key for the direction you want to move the window, e.g., press
the left arrow key to move the window left. Press the Enter key to complete the move.
'''Firefox Window "off screen" — Maximize + New Window Script Method'''
If Firefox is nowhere to be found but you know it's out there, try this method.
Make the Firefox tile active on the task bar and press this key combination to
    maximize the window:
    Alt+Spacebar > X
(To clarify, that's Alt+Spacebar to open the window control menu, then the letter
    x to maximize the window.)
    If that works, try this:
    (1) Copy the following line of code to the clipboard (it's all one line...):
    newwin=window.open(window.location.href,"_blank","width=640,height=480,menubar,toolbar,personalbar");newwin.moveTo(0,0);
    (2) In the maximized window, press Ctrl+Shift+k to open the web console.
    (3) Press Ctrl+v to paste the line of code next to the caret (») then press Enter to run it.
A new copy of that page should open in a window positioned at the top left of the screen.
    (4) Switch back to the maximized window and close it first, before doing anything
    in the new window.
'''Firefox Window "off screen" — Remove Settings File'''
If you can't move or maximize Firefox, you can rename or delete the settings
file that stores the last window position.
    (1) Open your currently active Firefox settings folder (AKA Firefox profile folder).
From the Start menu (Run box or search box), paste this into the search box and press Enter:
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
This should open a window showing one or more Firefox profile folders. If you have multiple
folders, look for the most recent. Click into your profile folder.
    (2) If Firefox is still running, right-click it on the Task Bar and Close all Windows.
    (3) Wait a few moments for Firefox to finish updating files in your profile folder, then rename
'''localstore.rdf''' to something else, like localstore-bad.rdf or localstore.old.
Alternately, you can delete the file.
    (4) You're done with your profile folder and you can restart Firefox now.

    Hi Mariah ~
It's Shaunn, the original poster. Thanks for your posting. I'm glad I'm not the only one that's having this problem.
Now that you mention it, I'm having the exact same problem on Facebook as well, when I play Family Feud.
I wish someone would investigate and post a solution to this problem. No-one from Playlist has responded, and no-one "Officially" from Firefox either.
So Mariah, I appreciate you and your post.
If you find anything out...from anywhere...would you please let me know. You can post it right here and I'll get an email from Firefox.
I'll do the same for you.
Enjoy your day and good luck.

  • When I download something from the Web, the "Downloads" window opens, but the window remains blank. Before it used to at least show the name of the file and I could open the file from the "Downloads" window. Is there a way to get this functionality back?

I'm running Windows XP which is updated to latest version (which I think might be Service Pack 3, but not positive.) Mozilla Firefox is version 5.0. I tend to use Google as my search engine so most of the stuff I download comes through sites found through Google, which is also updated.
At some time in the past (maybe a few versions ago) when I would download a file from the Web, the "Downloads" window would open and in the window would be displayed the name of the file I was downloading or had just completed downloading. I think I used to be able to then click on that file name and the file (or the installation file if needed to start the new program) would open. I am currently using Firefox 5.0 (the "About Firefox" screen says this is up to date) and when I download a file or document, the "Downloads" window appears on the screen as it always has in the past, but it remains blank, i.e., nothing appears in the downloads box. I don't remember making any configuration changes, etc., that may have caused the window to remain blank, but I could be mistaken. I know how to find the items I've downloaded (My Documents / Downloads) and can usually guess what the name of the downloaded file might be, but it used to be much easier when something (anything) showed up in the downloads window.
I'd love for someone to tell me about a simple fix for this. I'm willing to be quite embarrassed that I did something I shouldn't have.'''

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

  • ITunes 11.1.5 (64-bit) tries to open, but freezes Windows 7 (64-bit)

Even when it does manage to open, it instantly becomes unresponsive. Browser and other computer tasks become unresponsive. The task manager takes longer that usual to open when it does open. Had to shut down processes in task manager to take control of the system back. Had to force shut off PC twice because at one point the pointer and touchpad functions became unresponsive. Uninstall and re-install results in the same. It started when I dragged 146 re-tagged songs to the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder. At the moment I have over 32,000 files in iTunes.
I used Mp3tag to re-tag the mp3 files I tried to drag in. Although these songs where in iTunes while they were being tagged, I only retagged titles and artists, I didn't even add images to the mp3 files so I don't see why it would be too much work for iTunes to classify the previous versions as missing (as it always does) and just add the new files as it always did.
Of course this retagging process could have nothing to do with what is happening. I went back and extracted the songs from the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder (yes they were still there, all of them) and set them aside in a different location to see if it relieved iTunes from the workload, but no change. I tried uninstalling and installing an older version (11.1.3) but it didn't work. I uninstalled and tried to re-install 11.1.5 but the same thing is happening.
I just tried to view a CD I put in my PC with the purpose to rip it, and iTunes did the same thing.
I run Windows 7 (64-bit), with 70GB of storage available (of 449), Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor, and 8GB of RAM to work with.
    Thanks ahead of time.

    Hey pippin73,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like the third-party plugin may be impacting the performance of iTunes:
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430
There are several ways an add-on can cause iTunes to act erratically, such as those listed below:
    - Loss of iTunes functionality, such as the Visualizer
    - Distortion or irregularity in the iTunes interface
    - Slow performance
    - iTunes won't open or quits unexpectedly
    - You see this alert while syncing: "... cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."
If you see the above symptoms or other unusual behavior, you can disable any third-party plug-ins by opening iTunes in Safe Mode:
    - OS X: Hold down Option-Command.
    - Windows: Hold down Shift-Control while opening iTunes.
If opening iTunes in safe mode resolves your issue, see the above resource for steps you can take to minimize impact.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Compressor opens but no windows appear, then hangs

hi, i just used compressor, went back into it for a second job and the compressor load pop up appeared and the menu appeared at the top but none of the windows appear, happens on opening from the menu or from sending a clip to open in compressor. never had a problem with it in the past. I have followed some advice found here including trashing prefs, trashing a bunch of files in an apple support document, even reinstalling compressor and motion but the problem persists. Any ideas?
    thanks in advance

I should add that the destinations/settings window does appear when i activate it from the windows menu, but absolutely nothing else activates. Compressor then hangs and always requires a force quit (which doesnt always work)
please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Applications open but no window ?

hi, I'm running 10.5.1 on a MBP. It has been running fairly well until recently. Whenever I open key applications (Safari, MS word) I do not see the actual window.Only that the application is open. The problem seems to be spreading to other applications. I feel like I've got a virus or something. Thanks for any advice in advance.

    Hiya,
I am running 10.5.1 on my brand new iMac, and I have the same problem. The applications launches (the little light in the dock turns on) but does not display. I just log off and log on again and applications launch properly again.
I was using Mail once and suddenly it disappeared, a 'victim' of this annoying problem. The application is still responsive when you cannot see it, because I was able to check for new mail and hear the feedback sounds indicating whether I have mail or not.
The programs that do not display the most for me are:
    - Mail
    - Microsoft Messenger
    - iTunes
    - Safari
I have all software updates installed, and I am not using Spaces.

  • IChat will open but no window shows

iChat has unexpectedly quit. Buddy list will not appear or any type of login screen. The tool bar across the top will show up but there are no ways of opening anything (everything is in grey). All updates are up to date on this computer and a copy of it was given to me by a friend over Blue Tooth and this will not open either.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
So in the iChat Menu bar you cannot get to Preferences in the iChat Menu or see any Screen Name listed in th Windows Menu ?
Many items will be grey if there are no windows as a front window is needed to change many items.
However it is possible to Login with Buddy Lists being Hidden (Use the red Button/blob) and then iChat Restarted. iChat "Remembers" that the window is not On view but does still list Logged in name in the Window Menu (Use Listed Keystrokes to bring Window in to view)
A Copy of what was given over Blue Tooth ?
