Operating system for Lightroom, your opinion

I am 66 years old, still working, use a computer for all of my work.  Our IT department despises Windows Vista.  I use Lightroom and Photoshop CS3 at home mostly, using Windows XP.  I am purchasing a new PC, not the most up to date, dual core, 3 GHz, 4 GB RAM.  It will be coming with Windows Vista installed, but I can downgrade it to Windows XP.  I know, I should have bought a Mac, but I'm not going to change at this point in my life.  My question is whether I should downgrade to XP.  I have heard a lot of horror stories about Vista, but I have also read that many people like it.  I'm not into gaming, don't need a speed demon.  What would your recommendation be?

Just a few things:
1) When are you buying the machine? If it is from a major producer, if you wait a couple weeks, you can buy it with an option for a free upgrade to Windows 7.  That, however, absolutely applies to Vista machines only.  Based upon the leaked Best Buy pricing memo (if real), other upgrades from existing copies of Vista will be quite affordable as well.
2) Will the machine you are planning on buying ship with the 64 bit version of Vista?  If so, Lightroom runs natively (and very well) on the 64 bit verison of Vista but is not usupported on the 64 bit version of XP.
3) Vista gets a bad rap mostly from people who do not run it.  It amazes me how an OS that was as despised as XP was in its first two years, and is still insecure and (at times) unstable has become a crutch for people. If the Vista development cycle had been shorter and Microsoft hadn't made a series of Vista PR blunders early on, I doubt you'd hear nearly as many Vista complaints.  I also take IT comments on the subject with a huge grain of salt since many IT people refused to pay for the obligatory courses to be Vista certified. I was both amused and annoyed to have an IT person last year tell me things that were wrong with Vista that were simply not true - they were also made a bit uptight when I then explained to them why they were wrong since all they could do was spew the equivalent of auto repair technician blather that I wasn't supposed to understand.  From my perspective of a couple years of use, Vista is a superior OS to any version of XP if run on a modern system.    With that said, Windows 7 (really the next version of Vista) is superior to both Vista and XP.
4) Leaving aside drivers for some legacy peripherals, when Vista was released people did have problems finding drivers for some system components but that is no longer the case (hasn't been since SP 1).  One thing to keep in mind though is it is starting to be the case that people are now having trouble finding drivers when trying to downgrade Vista systems to XP.  In the world of technology, XP is ancient and people can't always find working drivers for some components, or they have to employ work arounds to use some newer SATA drives. Take a look at the HP forums if you want to see some of the fun some people are having getting XP to work properly on systems that were designed for Vista.
Given all of the above, it is pretty obvious what my advice would be:  buy the system with Vista (preferably the 64 bit version).  After you play with it a bit, you will probably realize it is a) easy to use, b) has some nice UI improvements, and c) is very stable.   Of course, I would then suggest upgrading to Windows 7 when available, since it is an impressive upgrade to Vista.  I run the Windows 7 64 bit RC on my primary machine and (minor beta quirks aside) remain impressed with it across the board.  It is faster and more efficient, with an enhanced Vista-based interface, and Vista's stability and security....

    Hello,
That means it can find the Hard Drive, or can't find the things needed for booting.
See if DU even sees it.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Go to your home screen, and then press the volume down or up button. It should say Ringer instead of volume. If it doesn't do that, try going into the clock app and try it there.

Leopard doesn't work well with G5!!
If you have tiger, stay with it, its solid. There is no reason to use leo at the moment!
There is nothing you cannot do with tiger concerning audio.
When its time to upgrade, you can do, but who knows.....
    Cheers Eddie
What FUD. Seriously. Plenty of people on this board are running leopard with no problem. My leopard is solid, and it runs logic and reason.
Leopard worked fine on my G5.
As for the comment about leopard not being able to run tiger....well, that's kinda mind blowing.

I downloaded the latest operating system for my iPhone 5.  It worked fine for about two minutes then the phone requested a password number to continue. Each time I inserted numbers, which were incorrect, the phone would lock up for a certain period of time.  Now, it says “iPhone is Disabled”.  It said to “Connect to iTunes” which I did, but iTunes does not recognize my phone.  If I scroll the face to the right, it goes to the phone number face and says, "No Service". Can I do something to make the phone work?

The "internal operating systems" for a Centro is stored in ROM on the device.  To reload it cleanly, simply do a Hard Reset:
How to Hard Reset a Palm Centro.
Go to http://kb.palm.com and enter the number 45050 into the "Solution ID" box.

it doesnt support the operating system for mac? adobe premiere?

    Hi,
which version of Premiere Pro are you trying to install? Also check your system compatibility for Premiere Pro CC as suggested by John. If you are trying to install CS6 or any of the previous versions then you can check the compatibilty from this link. http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/system-requirements-premiere-pro.html MAC OS 10.6.8 should work with Premiere Pro CS6, if your system meets the rest of the criteria. For Premiere Pro CC, 10.6.8 may not work. Check your OS if its a 32 bit or a 64 bit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696

  • Certified operating system for Oracle Identity Management 10g (10.1.4.0.1)

    Hello,
I have a question regarding the certified operating system for Oracle Identity Management 10g (10.1.4.0.1)
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/files/idm_certification_101401.html
    - for an Intel EM64T 64 bit machine
for the application server database it is stated that we need
    Windows 2003 R1 (64 bit OS)
and the application server platform is certified with
Windows 2003 R1 with SP1 or higher (64 bit OS)
an installation of application server platform + database on a single Intel EM64T with Windows 2003 R1 with SP1 is not certified ? or with other words, if I add Sp1 to 2003 than the application server database is not on a certified platform ?
    thanks

    Hi Florin
My guess is that you are looking at the Oracle Identity Federation certification section in the link for the IDM certification.
The IDM certification for windows is in par. 2.3
For a 64 bits machine it specifies that you need Windows 2003 R2 to run it. And it is only certified for an Oracle database version 9.0.3.1. The footnote says:
    Oracle Database includes Oracle 9i 9.2.0.8, Oracle 10g 10.1.0.5, Oracle 10g 10.2.0.1, and Oracle 10g 10.2.0.2
so I would go for the latest Oracle database version 10g 10.2.0.2. However the link with the Oracle database versions only notes an Oracle database version 10.2.0.1 available for Windows 64 bit. A quick lookup under the certifify tab in metalink shows that Oracle 10g R2 is certified for Windows 2003 10g R2 and that there is a 10.2.0.2 patch set that can be applied upon the Oracle database 10.2.0.1 base release. Don't forget to apply the latest CPU after this is done.
I have this from the documentation links you added in your question. I have not installed IDM 10.1.4 on Windows 64 bit myself.
    Cheers

Is it possible to run two different versions of Apple operating system (for ex. 10.6.8 and 10.9) on a MacBook Pro, either on the same disk or from an external hard disk? If so, where would I find the details? (In order to be able to use the older applications no longer supported in 10.9)

If you want to add a second partition to the internal drive (in Disk Utility, select the drive, then open the partition tab and just click the + button), you should first be sure that you will have enough room to accommodate whatever the second volume will be. I am currently doing this for Snow and Mountain Lion.
To get to whatever volume is not the startup disk, restart and hold down option/alt at the chime, which will bring up a selection of the two volumes. Use the left or right arrow keys to select it and then hit enter/return.

How, specifically, do I download the latest operating system for my Mac laptop?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, follow the Core Duo instructions, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
