Operating temperatures on Macbook Pro 15" (Mid-2009)?

Hello people. I have a quick inquiry. I searched google and there were no definite answers regarding this issue, it's all a matter of opinion to many people. What is the safe range for operating temperatures for a 15" Macbook Pro (mid-2009)? Before having installed SMCFanControl, my temperatures ranged in the mid-high-60's (degrees Celsius) when doing intensive work (itunes, google chrome, playing CS: Source on Steam for Mac, Transmission).
After installing SMCFanControl and cranking up the fans to a 3700rpm my temp is now 43-46 degrees C. Is that at all normal/safe?
Sorry I'm just used to my old custom-built PC were my temps are in the mid-30's C. My MacPro 6-core is also about the same, mid-30's C.

I do not remember the exact specs, but if you go to Intel's web site you can look up the design specs for the mobile core-2-duo cpu's. They have a critical operating temp of 100 degrees centigrade (or very close to thereabouts, somewhere between 100 and 105 as I recall).
So, running at 60 degrees is well within the designed operating specs for the chips. My MBP routinely will get up to 80-85 degrees under intense load (number crunching in R for example) and it seems no worse for wear after nearly a year and half of such use.
Your MacPro has much larger cpu heat sinks (since it can) as well as a much larger volume of airflow past them. Even so, start pushing all your cores to 100% with some massively RAM intensive applications, and even it's temps will rise quite a bit (I used to see my work 8-core Xeon MacPro get up into the 70-80 degree range under really heavy load).
And, as mentioned, your machine has thermal shutdown features built into it and monitors several key components internally. Intel designs their mobile chips for higher thermal stress, and they also publish specs and guidelines for manufacturers to follow when installing them in their system designs (eg. air flow, heat sink specs and so forth).

  • Installing OSX on brand new HDD on Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2009

I have installed a brand new solid state hard drive in my macbook pro 13" mid 2009.
I replaced the old hard drive because it was failing.
Now that I have the new hard drive installed I am struggling to get OS X installed onto the new hard drive. I have ruled out using a USB enclosure on the old hard drive to do the transfer because it was failing.
I do have the original OSX snow leopard start up disk. I have tried using this to install OSX onto the new HDD but it would not work.
I think it might be because the new HDD is unformatted?
I have also been into disk utility to try to resolve this but this does not work.
I have tried partitioning the new HDD but I get an error message "Partition failed .... POSIX reports: The operation cannot be completed. Cannot allocate memory".
I have also tried the restore function in Disk Utility to restore the disk using my time machine backup disk, but I get the error "Could not erase target - Operation not permitted"
I have also tried to restore the HDD from a time machine backup, but when I try to select a Destination it says the "disk does not have enough space to restore your system"
Any suggestions on how to solve this would be much appreciated

I assume that you have an original Leopard installation disk or a white retail Snow Leopard disk.
Start your MBP with one of these disks holding the C key down.
Commence the installation process until you get a display with the menu bar on top.
    Click on UTILITIES.
From the drop down menu, click on Disk Utility.
    Select Disk Utility>Erase.
Format the SSD to 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.
    Continue the OSX installation.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro 17" (Mid-2009) Randomly Getting Stuck in Sleep Mode when Unplugged

Hey guys, this is my first time posting so please excuse me if I do anything wrong. Here's the issue:
I have a Macbook Pro 17" (Mid-2009) that has had an issue with the whole computer shutting down at random, but only when unplugged from the MagSafe power adapter. Upon scouring all the forums and discussions I could, I haven't found anyone with the same exact circumstances as myself, hence this post. Let me explain.
Many say it's a battery issue. That can't be, because this has been happening for months, and after I finally got my laptop repaired a few days ago, it still occurs. I had sent it in for a logic board failure, but consented them to fix any other parts that weren't functioning properly. Upon the return of my machine, I found that they installed a fresh hard drive, new battery, new logic board, and a new speaker on the right side. This must mean that neither the logic board nor the battery are the issue.
What else can this point to? Again, it only occurs when the Mac is unplugged from a power source, and it doesn't totally shut down. It goes half way, essentially stuck in sleep mode. The white indicator light on the front freezes, and the power button has to be held to fully turn the laptop off, then pressed again to reboot. It can last anywhere from a single minute to a few hours before shutting off again, and it's always the exact same circumstance, no matter what kind of computing I'm doing at the time.
Note that while no one else has found the solution to lie within resetting the PRAM or SMC (in the discussions I read), I still need to try that tonight and see if it affects anything.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean

Macs are having problems with SSD drives. The root cause is the OS X journaling file system. The Apple-written SATA controller driver can saturate the bus at times, inhibiting performance. Some manufactures are even selling special "Mac" versions of their SSD drives that are slowed down on purpose to compensate for this problem. Unfortunately, the problem still exists in Snow Leopard, from what I've read.
Also, I read that Apple has secretly slowed the recent new laptops down (3.0GB/s to 1.5GB/s) to compensate for the problem.

  • What is the right charger for a MacBook Pro 13"  mid 2009 model?

What is the right charger for a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2009 model? I have two chargers for two different Mac and don't know which is  thankswhich. I'm really looking for specific details such as voltage/watts and all the rest to idenify my charger.  A link to where to web page where I could purchase the correct charger would also be very useful. Many thanks.
All help much appreciated. THANK YOU

Both power adapter I have are different (at the magnet end) from the one in link.
Earlier adapters have T shaped connectors, which Apple later changed to the L shape, presumably to make them more abuse-proof. Either one is fine and the one you are using will not damage your Mac.
Retina MBPs and new MBAs use a completely different MagSafe 2 connector which will not fit (without an adapter).

  • Macbook pro 15" mid 2009 model display "freeze", please help!!!

I have a Macbook pro 15" mid 2009 model which all of a sudden startet "freezing" everytime i restart it, opens spesific programs, etc, and it is really starting to bug me! Sometimes it takes me 15 minutes to start the computer, and then freezes for another 5 minutes when i try to start i.e word.
I currently have the Mac OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard).
Could this be fixed by a software update of some sort? If not, how can i fix it (if possible at all)?
    Thanks!

You have provided some good basic information, but I'll need more in order to address our question.
    1. When did you notice this problem? Relatively recently, or have you been having this problem for a while?
    2. Can you correlate the problem with the installation of new software? Which software?
    3. How much RAM do you have? If it's 2gb, that's probably not enough - 4gb is ideal for your unit.
    4. Do you update your MBP with software update? Have you updated your browser and plugins?
    5. Have you cleaned your MBP? Recently, an increasing amount of users have seen improvement by getting dust from your unit.
    6. What programs cause you to freeze, or this happen with all applications? What happens when you notice the freeze? Do you see a spinning wheel? Does the display freeze? Be as specfic as possible.
I realize this is a detailed homework assignment, but answer as completely as you can. This is an answer to your issue - it's just a matter of narrowing things down.
    Post in this thread!

  • HT4628 No Wi-Fi on Macbook Pro 13'' (Mid 2009)

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro 13'' mid 2009. I've done every update since I bought the Mac.
I've been having huge problems with the wi-fi on the Mac lately.
Every time I restart the Mac, the system does not load the wi-fi. Nor do I see e.g the battery power and other
Items don't load either. I have to restart the Mac several times 10 to 15 times until the wi-fi signal is shown on the login screen and all the other things work again as well.
I had this problem as well on Lion.
My question is, what could be wrong and how can I fix the problem?
Help would be appreciated...or does anybody have the same problem?
    Thanks!

    anybody helps me???

  • Steps in upgrading HDD to SSD on Macbook Pro 13 Mid 2009

I need help in upgrading the RAM and Storage in my MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2009. I have bought 8GB Memory and 512 GB SSD from Crucial.com. I have watched a lot of Youtube Videos on how to install them but I am afraid I am still missing some things I need to do.
I have created a back up on an external drive and have been updating it regularly. I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did).
Is there anything else I need to do? How about the OSX? Do I need to create a back up for it? Or is it part of the back up I have on an external drive?
    Please help! Thank you.

" I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did)."
    Check this out:
    http://macintoshhowto.com/repair/back-up-computer.html
Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:
    http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/512GB-M4-and-2009-Macbook-Pro/td-p/7805 6
It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
    I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.

  • Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2009: back light problem

    Hey guys,
I was hoping you could offer me some advice.
My 13" Macbook Pro from mid 2009 has been having some backlight issues. Sometimes, after opening the screen, the backlight won't turn on. If I shine through the Apple logo on the back with a torch, you can see the log-in screen, so I'm pretty sure the problem lies with the back light.
I have tried ressetting the SMC and PRAM, yet that hasn't helped. The only way to get the backlight to turn back on is to remove the cover, unplug the battery, hold the power button for 5 seconds, plug back in the battery, put the cover back, and then turn it on.
So far I had to do this every 2 months or so, yet now the screen seems to die more and more often. As you can imagine, it's quite a pain having to go through this process over and over.
Again, any advice to fix this issue would be fantastic.
    Thanks!

I appreciate the response, but my issue does not appear in the linked article as a reason to reset the SMC. Resetting the SMC seems like something too radical to fix something that should "just work". My MBP generally takes too long to wake up or doesn't wake up at all. If it doesn't wake up, I hold the power button and restart. Very annoying, since my wife can resume work on her PC faster coming out of Windows 7 hibernation mode.
    Thanks, Apple!

  • Tried to upgrade HD in Macbook Pro 15" mid 2009.

Tried to upgrade HD in MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009.  Upgrade HD is WD 1TB (WD10JPVT).  Installed from scratch in a USB container.  Within that container the disk boot and ran fine.  The problem started when I installed in the computer.  The disk boots fine, but runs EXTREMELY slow.  I have reset the system management controller and PRAM.  Any suggestions?

That could explain the lag. Go into Disk Utility, click on the storage DEVICE (above the Macintosh HD volume), then check how it shows up in the specs on the bottom of the window. MUST say:
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
If not, you will have to repartition (click on the Options button, may need to delete the current partition) and format again. No other way.

  • Macbook Pro 17 Mid-2009 Freeze during Wifi Time Machine backup

I have a 17" Macbook Pro 17" Mid 2009 model, running ML 10.8.2, 8GB memory. I am backing up the system to an Airport Extreme shared disk with Time machine over Wifi using the 5GHZ band. My system has all-of-a-sudden started locking up completely during backup. No mouse movement, and everything frozen -- even the clock. The only way I am able to back up is directly connecting via ethernet to the AE, or by attaching a USB disk.
The system has been working for over a year to the AE TM, and at first I thought it was OSX 10.8.3, so I wiped out and reinstalled from scratch and the system still locks up on 10.8.0. So far, it's only over wifi. I also tried during my troubleshooting, using Carbon Copy Cloner to a Sparsebundle image over Wifi with the same results.
I can access and copy files from the AFP hosted disks on the AE with no problem. So it seems to be something in Rsync and the Wifi drivers that aren't jiving.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

I see nobody is reacting to your problem.
I have (almost) the same problem, but with 10.7.5.
Not only Time Machine freezes up (over WiFi and USB-connected), but also my Music downloads (everything else works fine) to my iPhone 5 (with  iTunes 11.1) and also Spotlight (indexing for minutes and then freezes).
All these 3 actions (which usually take longer than anything else) freeze up after 3 to 15 minutes. Never the same, always different durations. Very annoying.
On the other hand: ever since I disabled Spotlight, my MacBook Pro A1286 is as fast as when I bought it in 2009.
This all happened suddenly, out of the blue. No added software, hardware. No changes in prefs.
I had my hardware checked. I have done a memtest. All the tricks in the book. To no avail.
Aopple techs tell me to wait till Maverick......some solution ;-)

  • I bought my MacBook Pro in Mid 2009, Can I still purchase insurance on it?

I purchased my MacBook Pro in mid 2009 and just yesterday I began having problems with my trackpad.  I have to press down really hard on the trackpad so that I can click something. I didn't spill anything on it and it just happened all of a sudden. I don't have insurance on it can I still purchase it now?

Do you happen to know how much I would be charged to take it into an Apple Store to have my computer checked out or have my trackpad replaced.  I can't even talk to someone on the phone because just to talk to someone they are charging me $50.
