Opinion needed on ram.

This is a ram manufacture that I found on Ebay, http://stores.ebay.com/OMNI-TECHNOLOGIES. They offer two types of ram that are compatable with the Mac Pro. One is called Optival and the other is called Hyperfomance. Could some one check their store and let me know which sticks match the ones that come with the Mac Pro system. I now I am asking alot, but I dont want to damage any thing by not using matched sticks. I will soon be making the switch to Mac and this will be my last system for a long while. I just don't want to screw it up.

Also search the net under <Optival> without the chevrons. The postings under that are mixed some report errors per Sys prof some say good, some say ready replacement and others say the are friendly on the phone. The mfr (?) Optival are apparently in Florida so you should be better able to track them than I from here in Ultima Thule. The specs on the website of the vendor ,Omni Techologies, gives the right specs.
THEY SAY about your pacage: 4.0GB, Apple Spec Certified, DDR2 PC2 6400, 800MHZ, ECC Fully Buffered, 24 Pin /Gold lead, DIMM 256 x 4, 16 chip, 8 Byte, CAS 5/4, 7.5ns, 1.8v.
The ILLUSTRATION showsthem to have substantial heatsinks and a post (but on another ram module) shows the giving the reply that they use the same heatsinks as Apple. I don.t think Apple make heatsinks and they (Apple) use various makers so you work out what the heatsink reference means.
P.S. there is a US phone number 800-805-8655 on the Omni Technologies page I don't know a phone number for Optival. Ask for the mfr phone on number given, which is said to be for support and advice. They do not seem that cheap to me at $2609.99 for the package you mention but you are getting 16GB.
The Omni page gives it's address as " Our postal address is 1515 N. Federal Highway 300 Boca Raton, FL 33432. We can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] or you can reach us by telephone at 561-750-2484."
I have no personal knowledge of them. I would let you make the experiment.

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 on mid-2009 Macbook Pro (683MB RAM used, 81.67GB free space), do I need additional RAM to update to Snow Leopard?
I was told I can update to Snow Leopard without adding RAM but just read on another discussion thread that someone with the same age Macbook Pro that I have was told to purchase more RAM then update to SL.

  • Help me explain the need for RAM? Please???

Hi, I work on a G5 in my new job as a 'Mac operator' (I'm in pre-press). At first I thought this has to be one of the original G5's that had issues, because it is pretty slow for a G5. So I decided to check the profiler and see just what my little Mac is made of. I must say my jaw hit the floor and my two co-workers were probably thinking I had just had a stroke.
    Without further ado, the specs:
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 900 MHz
Now you see why I need help? I have to wait for Quark to draw palettes ALL the time. I'm usually running InDesign, Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop, Suitcase, Thunderbird, Acrobat (the real one), and connected to FTP. Switching apps takes forever. I told my supervisor that it needed more RAM and she said, 'we can burn some stuff off and give you more room if you want'. So that's what I'm dealing with here. Anyone explain it for someone like that??? PLEASE? I've now dubbed the G5 "Smalls" - as in, "You're killing me, Smalls!"
Thanks so much for any help that leads to Smalls and I getting more RAM.

You don't have Universal Binaries yet. That hurts a lot. And the programs you use love memory, and Rosetta needs a GB too.
Your Mac would run some of those programs faster than Windows box IF you were to use Boot Camp, install Windows XP, and the windows versions.
There are some sites with benchmarks of programs and comparing MacBook Pro vs others.

512MB of memory is minimum of what OS X requires. Most users found 1.5GB to be the 'sweet spot' for general purpose.
CS2 gets along fine with its own 3.5GB, and best with 7-8GB of memory - as OS X uses memory cache first before needing to use scratch.
You can show them how many swap files there are. just do a Finder Go To (command shift g)
    /private/var/vm/
that would be one way. Monitor real and virtual in Top and Activity Monitor.
    Monitor disk usage.
    Ask for a 150GB Raptor!
Quark is coming along with a new UB version. CS3 is still about 9 months plus away.
You really really need a G5 Dual or Quad Core, with support for more drives and 8-16GB RAM.
there is no reason NOT to max out the RAM in your system!

  • Does my MacBook White 7,1 need more RAM?

    Hi, I'm Federico from Argentina.
It's my first post here. First of all, sorry for my english, hope it's not so bad.
I am photographer and digital retoucher, so, as you might imagine... I use a lot Photoshop (CC).
I'm thinking that I need to upgrade my Macbook to 8gb (now I have 4gb) because my OSX is running slow, and it's affecting my workflow (upgrading to MB Pro is not a chance... no budget for that...).
In the Activity Monitor when retouching in Photoshop memory pressure shows in yellow (Mavericks).
Beyond that, here's my EtreCheck report, I think you may find it useful for troubleshooting my problem.
    Thank you so much!

Yes, you need more RAM, but more imprtantly:
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / [Startup]: 249,2 GB (3,45 GB free) (Low!)
Your Mac is running on vapour! You are risking data loss and a fouled-up system. You urgently need to move files (not applications) to an external hard drive, to leave at least 30GB free.

  • Need more ram on 10.4.11, what can i safely dump?

need more ram on 10.4.11, what can I safely dump after saving on x-ternal h/d?

OS X 10.4 is Tiger, and 10.4.11 is the last release. It's been stable for quite some time, so I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to it. The next operating system upgrade would be to Leopard 10.5, and with a MacBook you could probably upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.
When upgrading within an operating system release, ie 10.4.10 to 10.4.11, you don't typically have issues. When going to the next level of operating system, that's where you can run into issues with printer or other drivers and/or programs that need to be updated to run with the newer operating system.  With the exception of losing the OS X classic environment when upgrading to 10.5 Leopard and losing the Rosetta emulator (which runs PowerPC code on Intel platforms) when upgrading to 10.7 Lion, for the most part, the upgrades are pretty straight forward.

  • Do i need extra RAM to install adobe design standard cs5.5

I have an iMac bought mid 2010 snow leopard 10.6.8. I am looking to buy adobe creative suite design standard CS5.5, will I need extra RAM?
    I hope not!
I only really need photoshop, illustrator and indesign, so my other question is can I just install these from the package?
    Please help anyone!
    Thanks.

No, I am saying the three programs that you want to use in the suite, if you are planning on using all three programs (at the same time) then it is possible your system could slow down, then a RAM upgrade will help.  Give it a try it may work out okay.
Yes, I know how to backup separate things on to another external hard drive.  Just connect the hard drive make sure it is formatted for use as a Mac hard drive. Open disk utility and click on the hard drive at the bottom of the window it will show you the partition map scheme, it should be GUID Partition Table.  If not then you should format the hard drive but clicking the erase tab and the selecting Mac OS Extended (journaled) from the format drop down box.  If you are going to use the drive to transfer files from Mac to PC then you should select MS-DOS (FAT) the only problem with this format you will not be able to copy file larger then 4GB.  Then just open the find and drag and drop folders and files to the external hard drive.

  • HT1342 so how do i know if i need more ram? (upgrade from snow- mt. lion)

Here is the mac that i have. I want to upgrade from snow l. to mt, lion when it comes out. articles are saying that i will need 4gb even though the updae page says 2gb. how do i read the activity monitor to see if i need more ram for the update? or do i just need to wait, install teh update, and then check? I want to get this all done in the next month so help would be great!

2 GBs is the minimum required. 4 GBs or more would be better. Your model supports up to 8 GBs.

A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • How do i know if i need more ram

mac is running slow, how do i know if i need more ram?

Well, how much RAM do you have? Post back what you have.
Another possibility is that your hard drive is getting too full - the Mac OS needs a minimum of 10 - 15% of hard drive space free and available at all times. So, click on your hard drive icon once and hit Command and I on the keyboard. In the resulting window, post the results: space available, used, etc.

  • My Macbook is very slow, do I need more RAM?

I have checked the Activity Monitor as advised on the forums here and it says 16.3MB free.
It's around 5 years old and I've just upgraded to 10.8.2
I have no idea what this means but I also saw that this number is important?
    Page ins 5.92GB
    Page outs 6.88 GB
My question is do I need more RAM and if so how do I go about doing it?
    Thanks!

Yes, you need more memory. While 2GB is the minimum for OS X 10.8, many have found that 4GB is needed for general performance.  For what you run, you can see this in your page in/outs. Page outs generally should be no more than 10% to 15% of page ins. More than that can really slow the system down as it writes pages of memory to the hard drive while making space for something else to use memory.
OWC and Crucial are two vendors that sell quality memory. Your user guide for your MacBook will tell you how to install the new memory.

  • Why JSC 2 now needs 1GIG Ram instead of 512MB for EA?

    Hi all,
What's the difference between JSCreator 2 and Early Access edition that require not 1 GIG of ram?
I'm skeptic of installing JSC2 bcz of this.
    thx.

ok, that's a Ooooohmm.. I didn't think my question would spark such a buzz..
    javaswed,
I'm sorry if I offended you with my question.
what are you doing in the J2EE department if you dont have 1GB ram in the first place ?.
I'm just starting to learn Java and Creator 2.
if you dont have 1 GB ram your hardly a serious developer anyhow.
Well actually I'm not new to programming, I finished a computer class and mainly did HTML in Dreamweaver since 1999. And I don't consider myself a serious developer I guess here you're right. You will be amazed what my current PIII 450Mhz with 400MB ram can run on Linux. It load's JSC2EA on XP SP2 with another 35 processes running in 2:27 mins. I manily need for learning, tutorials etc. By the time I go for a production i'll buy myself a new pc.
the comp hardware costs really is about 0 compared to what a software developers sallary is..
I'm not a "Software developer" and you should remember that not everybody live in the USA. I'm 24 y/old and the truth is i'm in the bottom of the tire now and the days of working 1/2 hour a day and making $1.5k from advertising are gone.
    Times change...
so if you cant affard a decent comp, something is major wrong.
Maybe. Time will tell. I could have bought myself a new pc, I just decided to invest the money in something more important.
You should also be aware of that the generall sweet spot for client performance has recently moved from 1 to 2gb of ram.
this is something you should understand...
I sold pc's on my last job, I do understand it :-)
And really, arguing about these tiny amounts of ram for a developer machine is silly.
Actually arguing about anything is silly. I didn't come to start an argue. :-)
I came to look for help.
I wish you all of the best. :-)
Everybody, thank you very much for your kind comments and warm welcome!
    vspurlin,
Thank you for your comment you actually answered my question. I will be able to run The new release of JSC2 on my pc for a learning purpose and tutorials for the time being.
It may be a good idea to show on the minimum system requirements, The actual MINIMUM of ram required to run the program, lets say for learning and recommended minimum for production work. Otherwise in my opinion 1GIG requirement may deter a lot of people "planning to replace comp" of touching JSC2 in the first place.
    Thanks again, :-)
    Valentine.

  • This is the regular status of the memory of my macbook pro. Do you think I need a RAM upgrade?

    Hi there,
I'm hoping to seek the expert views of the community here.
I have a MacBook Pro, Late 2011, 17 inch. Running latest version of Mavericks. Speed seems to have slowed somewhat, perhaps since I upgraded to Mavericks, but not certain about that. Based on my research of the Apple communities, I suspect that I may benefit from a RAM upgrade.
Attached are a few screen shots to assist:
Based on what I have researched in the community, the fact that I have used 3.99GB of 4.00GB, and have used 5.63GB of Virtual memory, seems to suggest to me that I have well and truly maxed out my RAM. Also there is a high number of read ins/outs (but it had been a wheile since I last did a restart on the MBP (if that has any effect on these numbers here).
I have also read that my model of MacBook Pro is upgradeable to 16GB of RAM (2 x 8GB).
Thoughts and views from the community would be greatly appreciated. Will additional RAM help the speed and performance of my MacBook Pro?
    Many thanks.

More RAM is always a Prudent move...

It will certainly help with Performance.
Macs can be very Fussy about RAM...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...

It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it....

  • All things being equal, does 4th gen quad core i7 (2.5GHz) need more RAM than 5th gen dual core i5 (2.7GHz) for same tasks?

Bought mid/late 2014 15" MBPr with the i7 2.5GHz and 16GB RAM. I'm within 2 week exchange period at Best Buy, and thinking of switching to 2015 13" MBPr with i5 2.7GHz and 8GB RAM for battery life and weight, and they don't offer the upgraded 16GB RAM option for any 13" models.
Needs to be Best Buy because of gift cards
Use docked at office 75% of time vs 25% out of office, so portability and battery life are nice to have but not as important as if I had 8 hour flights on weekly basis
See appeal of having 5th gen i5 in 13" vs my 4th gen i7 that will be updated this summer
Not a gamer and don't use Final Cut or other video editing, but I tend to leave several applications open and usually have between 1-3 GB free RAM of the 16GB total at any time according to my Memory Cleaner readings
Therefore, worried that 8GB is a non-starter as simple math says that I would have shortfall of 5-7GB RAM based on above readings, but wondering if dual core i5 will use RAM more efficiently than quad core i7
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Also to note, would like this to last 4 years, which was reason that I bought the higher spec'd model even though I don't run games or video editing
