Opinion of Mail?
How do you people like the Mac mail?
I am having a hard time trying to like it.
I was used to Microscam's outlook and express.
Also It worked with my Palm pilot, Mail doesn't sync.
I hate to not use it since I am trying to become an Apple deciple
thoughts?
FWIW, I'm an I.T. manager and have used and supported a ton of Mac and Windows email clients for a number of years. And I use mail.app. Why? It does the job and works well with Address Book, iCal, and Spotlight. The only folders in my mail are Inbox, Saved, Sent, and Junk, and Spotlight will find any of my 3000+ messages in a couple of seconds.
I'm very familiar with the software that you have been using. Most of my users are on MS Outlook, the most used mail client in business, and the bane of my life. It's big, bloated, and working in close cooperation with Internet Explorer has become, IMO, one of the greatest security risks in the Windows universe - Sorry, can't discuss MS software without going into a rant
In any event, when I used Windows at work, I preferred Outlook Express, and later Thunderbird.
When I first moved to Mac, I tried Entourage, but I didn't like its calendar and address book so I gave up on it after the first week.
Thunderbird is a great client, and is getting better every day. But it doesn't work with Mac Address Book, and I am constantly syncing To Do's, iCal, and Address Book with my Nokia. Any email client with a standalone Address Book doesn't make the grade. (and its search isn't as good as Spotlight)
Eudora has announced it has stopped development and will become part of the Thunderbird client at some future date, so there is little to be gained from evaluating a product thats at the end of its life.
mail.app, while not perfect, is widely used, and can be extended with a number of add-ons and hacks. I've hacked mine to display plain text only, and use the GPGMail plug-in. Hawkwings.net is a good source of info and add-ons if you decide to stick with mail.app.
Every tool isn't a perfect fit for everyone so you may want to try some different clients. Keep in mind, however, that it may be difficult moving saved messages from one client to the other. So plan ahead and browse this forum to see what might be involved.

Gmail making Mail app run slowly!
I have been teaching my fiancé how to use his iBook G4 (for more than just writing school papers.) He has a Gmail account that I have set up to work with the Mail app on OSX Panther. He now has a bad opinion of Mail because the app is really really slow to load up his new messages, (lots of that spinning wheel action!) and it makes his computer respond slowly to everything. Sometimes we have to force quit the application just to make the computer usable again.
I have set up his computer to my .Mac email and my other POP mail server, and neither of those accounts make Mail behave like that. Anybody have any similar experiences with Gmail? Any suggestions? Should we download Gmail's app instead?

Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference. -
After over forty years in IT I am actually a platform agnostic however I have come to expect some developmental maturity across all products, especially in generally ubiquitous apps such as email. I am using OS X 10.8.3 on a 2013 build Mac Book Pro and am very happy overall. Is Apple planning on fixing the various problems with Attachments in Mail or are they relying on third party fixes and workarounds?
My apologies if I have caused offence, not my intention. I was unable to view attachements but have since discovered an addon app which solves the problem very neatly. By way of explanation my frustration comes from Apple appearing to indulge in client lock in as do Microsoft - this practice was "invented" by IBM and only served to irritate clients and inspire excellent work arounds by third parties - much the same as I notice with Apple. I thought Apple would have outgrown this after the IIe vs BBC but I see this is not the case. I have recently upgraded to Mavericks and have no problems with Mail but am now unable to transfer material from Mac Pro to Ipod unless I use the icloud - something I do not want to do for a variety of reasons, not the least being able to transfer MY data without the use of an unsecured transition area. I am very happy with the quality of the Mac Pro but less than happy with the restrictive practices of Apple; I realise Microsoft have similar practises but they are not as completely disruptive to what are generally simple operations commonly required when using computers.

I need an opinion and/or advice about sending auto mail !!!

I'm creating a web application using servlets and few HTML files for user interface. What I have already created is Login.html page allowing user to enter username and password and there is a link that takes the user to registration.html page where he/she can register in case he/she is not a registered user already. All this information (user's personal data when registering) gets stored by some servlets to MS Access database. Once registered user he/she can log in and another servlet checks the database for username/pass provided. Once logged in,user is provided with a page that allows him/her to choose date (dropdown menu) and time (checkboxes) and once the user does this this date and time(s) are stored to database again. Now,I have already done this much but what I still need to do is to allow user to select other users from database who he/she wants to meet with-not all users registered (not sure how I'm going to this) and then I need to write a separate servlet that would check database every 2 hours for example and if it finds overlapping meeting time for any group of people it would send an email to all the members of this group informing them about the meeting time and date. What I need from you guys is advice how this could be done, what mail server I should use, what could be a problem, best way to do it...just personal opinions if you have one. first of all thanks 96472834 for your answer. Now, since I don't really know much (embarassed to say anything) about java mail I would ask you or anyone else willing to answer few more questions. Let's say I do this the way you suggested and I'm one of the people who are supposed to meet. Now, when I get that email, what does it say-where it comes from, what is the email address it comes from. Also, what do you mean by saying "your program should be reusable". Sender Mail Adapter - forcing content as an attachement
Hi all,
We are using the Sender Mail Adapter to pull emails from the inboxes of some users of an exchange server. We use the Mail Package option.
We have noticed that the content of the emails are by-default added as attachments when there are no real attachments to the emails. However the content is not added as an attachment when one or more attachments are present in these emails.
Is there a way of forcing the Sender Mail Adapter to always add the content as an attachment and keeping the other attachments as well? and of course maintain the Mail Package message type as the main payload...?

In your opinion is it possible to force the Outlook Exchange server to add the content attachment every time? I mean by doing some configuration on it...?
The reason why we would like to do this is because when - in the content tag of a Mail Package message - we have MIME message parts that are of content-type text/html we are having problems in decoding the html back to a readable format.
To do this we use the apache QuotedPrintableCodec Java class.
This works fine when the content type of the message is just text/plain but we get an exception when we try with text/html.
The exception we get is:
org.apache.commons.codec.DecoderException: Invalid URL encoding: not a valid digit (radix 16): 13
I don't know if this is because of the two character sets we have in the payload (utf-8 and iso-8859-1) or if it is for other reasons...
If you could help me figure out how to forward any HTML email to another system in a readable format it would be great.

Send PDF form to e-mail as attachment with a PHP script on the server

For several days I've been searching though the internet looking for a solution, a quite simple one in my opinion, but I got a little desperate not getting any result I want.
Okay. The Situation.
I have a PDF form to order sandwiches and drinks.
The PDF has serveral area's and columns where customers fill in the amount of the products they would like to order.
At a position of a field, the kitchen can almost blindly see what products a customer ordered.
Therefore, when someone fills in the form, I want to send the filled PDF by e-mail to the kitchen's e-mail adress. And important: the PDF in the kitchen's mailbox should be completely identical to the form the customer filled in.
So, I have an Order button in my form. I set the action as 'Submit a form'.
In the settings under 'Enter a URL for this link' I used just some PHP mailer script I also use on my website contact form.
IF I check 'HTML' under 'Export Format' the PHP mailer works fine. I receive an HTML e-mail listed the ordered products.
BUT
I do want the original filled PDF in my mailbox instead of an HTML e-mail.
So, for 'Export Format' I checked 'PDF The Complete Document'.
But then my PHP mailer script doesn't work anymore.
It gives errors like 'no valid e-mail adres' , etcetera etcetera.
Who has a solution?
Who has a working standard PHP script for me what just sends the kitchen an empty mail with the original PDF as attachment?!
There is no need to use any database or other more complex functionality. Just mail the filled PDF.You can submit whole PDF format as long as you enable usage rights on the PDF.
Normally Adobe Reader users can only submit the data, XFDF, FDF, XDP, XML.
To enable usage rights on the PDF you will need to use Adobe Acrobat Std/Pro.
As for the PHP Script; it depends on your PHP web server capabilities.
The script will be slightly different, if the server uses PHP Mail or PHP PEAR.
Just attach the submission to an email and send.
If the client is submitting the form from a standalone pdf reader app, you can also respond with a success or failure FDF \status message; otherwise, you can redirect to a success / failure URL.

Reply-to-all mails not going into discard folder in IMAP mailbox oracle 11i

App version : 11.5.10.2
OS : Solaris 10
We have a running prod system on which IMAP is configured in the workflow mailer. It has been observred that some users do a reply-to-all (or attach images as attachments )when they receive the email from IMAP and these emails are accumilated in the IMAP mailbox inbox and are not moved automatically to the discard folder. This caused mailer to hang and stops the mails from going forward.We then manually check for such faulty emails and then move then to discard folder and bounce the workflow mailer.
We have scanned the metalink and google notes but have not seen anyone facing this similar issue. Also referred to the metalink note 275182.1 which suggests to set the expunge settings in the inbox but they are already in place.
please suggest.

Thank You for your response. I did review the mailers logs but did not find anything significant. Also we guys are new to workflow so we are stuck. I am adding below the log file from the last 20 mins. please have a look and share your opinion on the same.
Also , please tell me exactly what is supposed to go in the DISCARD folder. ? Or do we need to create any rules in the outlook mailbox to care of the replies.

*My* frank opinion of the N900
*My* opinion of the N900
I know there are a few threads about that address this but I felt that it wouldn't be so bad to restart the conversation once in a while.
I got my N900 a week and a half ago and am right in the middle of deciding between these 3 choices:
- keep using the N900
- go back to my N97 and keep the N900 in the hope that within a few weeks/months Maemo and apps will vindicate us
- go back to the N97 and send the N900 back and wait for months until Maemo gets updated or even wait for the next Maemo device.
Here is in summary my opinion of the N900: it's a great device/computer but it's a lousy phone. I am kind of critical of the phone below even though I really like it and really want to use it more. So please read with that in mind.
What makes me optimistic is that all the problems I will be mentioning can and most will be fixed by software updates. We are not talking about dismal memory or scratched lenses like the N97 or wobbly sliders like the N95.
So please be kind, here goes my N900 impressions/opinions:
Hardware
++++
- Solid build. It's huge and heavy but, surprisingly, I don't mind too much. It strikingly contrasts with N97. this is a taste thing.
- Keyboard is great. Much better feel than N97.
- Humongous amount of RAM (for now. Once again, aslight dig at N97)
- Device does not fit in my Columbia khakis' phone pocket.
- I really like the tilt flip of N97 and as such currently dislike the flat slide for N900. I'm sure this is an acquired taste.
- I prefer the keyboard layout of N97 though the physical keyboard on N900 is better.
- Kickstand is flimsy
- I still think MicroSD slot should be accessible without removing battery cover. Yes, it still allows for hotswapping so that's still good.
Maemo
++++
- Multitasking is great.
- Task List shortcut *and* effects are nice.
- Effects in general are great.
- I liked the desktops and widgets.
- I *do* want my portrait mode for everything. This is a huge downer. Everything is in ladscape except the phone dialer.
- Maemo should implement the "hold-the-key-to-get-the-alternate-character" keyboard scheme that is fairly standard on other Nokia phones.
- On the virtual keyboard, why would the '.' not be on the same slate as the alpha? Makes no sense to have to switch to the other slate just to punctuate.
Communications
++++
- I did not think Skype integration would be that important but I love it. SIP and other networks from the dialer as well.
- I goes and gets your contacts' profile info when you are logged in to a network (Skype, Google Talk, etc) Pretty handy.
- eMail app does HTML. And pretty well too.
- Need a way to easily get to the phone app from anywhere.
- No support for network codes *#num# etc...
- No Speed dialing
- No sound profiles! My Nokia 6310 and SE T39 from 2001 did this! **bleep**?
- No Skype video calling (Fring does it!)
- eMail app should allow me to view emails in fullscreen mode.
- The whole message notification system is not very well thought out. If I leave for some time and just unlock the phone, there is not obvious way to tell that I got any new messages. It's only when I do a task list flick that I see that a conversation has resumed. Yes, the notification light flashes but nothing obvious is on the display.
- There is no obvious notification that I have missed calls. Same as message notification above.
- It seems to me that the internet connection is never disconnected. Even when all I have that needs the connection is the email app to poll every 30 minutes, the internet (whether 3G or Wifi) icon never goes away. This could be a huge battery saver if optimized.
- On the flip side, it also appears that if I just turn on the phone, it does not automatically initiate internet connections so then my email does not get refreshed unlees I remember to do it first by hand. Pretty inconvenient if you ask me.
Music Player
++++
- It's ok. Not a big critic so I am neither excited not negative about it.
- A FM receiver on the device but no FM software? **bleep**?
- Creating playlists is not clear. I still am sot sure how it's done after 10 days.

- No support for changing setting when watching a movie. I have some 16:9 movies that it shows at 4:3 and vice versa with no way to change. This makes it useless.

- Browser is very good.
- Love the (albeit limited) gesture shortcuts. Slide from left to hover (ok this one isn't that cool or clear,) slide from right for history, spiral on the screen to zoom in or out.
Maps and GPS

- GPS lock is much faster than other phones I've used. This is great in conjunction with Camera for geotagging purposes.
- I don't know what the Maps application is doing on there. It can't do anything. Search finds almost nothing, directions are barely average and no turn-by-turn. Please at least steal or beg Google to make Google Maps for Maemo.
Camera
++++
- Pretty decent. Better than N97 in my opinion.
- Geotagging is much faster than N97 even though it seems to tag too early so sometimes it's off because it uses the cellular info before a full GPS lock.
- Love the 16:9 mode. I realize one can do it post in Gimp but it's still cool.
- No Xenon flash means photos not as good as N82 in the dark.
- Once again, same problem as with N82, when taking a portrait photo, Nokia decided to put lanyard slot on "top" of the device which makes the lanyard sometime get in the way of the shot.
- Photo browser could be so much more.
Applications

- Obviously, I wish the Maemo catalog of apps were as big as that of Symbian apps but we'll get there, right?

- I think a device of this caliber/price/power should just have office applications built-in. I don't care if it's DataViz or OpenOffice or AbiWord/Gnumeric but it's bunk that we only get a trial of Documents-to-Go. Anyone know if OpenOffice or AbiWord is coming out for Maemo soon?

- This has been talked about everywhere and opinions/mileage vary but for me battery life has been dismal. As a test, I charged it up before going to bed: 9pm and by 7am it said it was half empty. All I had running was my mail checking every 30min and all my "identities" were inactive. No Wifi usage just 3G. It dies by 11am. This was after a week of cycling so that battery had a chance to be normalized.
- Wifi also killed the battery even if it was not connected all the time. This is a known bug so it should be fixed soon.
- For a > USD500 device, it's stupid that I don't get a full User Guide in the box.
- Why do they insist on Ovi store. It's **bleep** for Symbian phones, it'll be **bleep** for Maemo.
As I said, some of these are already on the Maemo bugs database, some are widely known issues and some are just personal preferences that may or may never be remedied.
I hope it helps people who are thinking about getting the device and I am hoping that the feedback I get here will help me decide whether to return mine or not.

hSo it appears that almost none of the firmware fixable items were addressed in Maemo 5/PR1.1. Out of the 23 issues I had that could be fixed via firmware (10 were either hardware or other issues that were not), only the #6 got a partial (and unofficial?) change: you can now browse the web in portrait mode by keying in ctrl+alt+o on the keyboard. Still waiting for another update I guess. I really do miss the phone, it just did not make sense to own and tie up that much money in a device I will not use as my primary phone. although the < USD450 price at Dell is very very tempting ;-)

Why can't I open word docs from mail anymore?
Am on 10.8.2 on Macbook Air and doc and docx attachments tell me to choose application to open the doc with and won't open when I choose "Word"
These used to be opened automatically by Word, not I have to manually choose Pages as the only option

Set up mail.app on my laptop.
When i send messages from my laptop, doesnt show up on my gmail account, when i check from the web.
also, setting up mail.app on my mac mini, and doesnt import sent messages from laptop, how do i sync? using imap worked better for the mini. using pop for the laptop. thanks.
Message was edited by: jareddddddIf you have a POP account, you can send mail to yourself, but Mail will not retrieve it. I've tested that many times myself, so I speak from experience.
My opinion is that you should stick to a POP account, skip the iPhone thing (you don't need yet another gadget, do you?), and just login from your Mac(s) and leave the mail on the server if you want all your computers to be able to have the same messages.

I have been using an iPhone and iPad to access my work emails via our MS Exchange server for a number of years now with no problems at all. I recently replaced my home PC with an iMac (first Mac I have owned) but cannot get it to communicate with the exchange server. I've checked and re-checked the information on the iMac and my iPad - I even deleted the mail account on the iPad and input the details concurrently with setting up on the iMac - but the Mac will not access the exchange server.
I receive the message "The Exchange server "---------------" rejected the password for user "------" Enter you password again or cancel." I am using the correct password. iPad and iPhone are logging on using that password fine. iMac just ends up repeating this message.
Our IT support at work assure me that there is no reason from their end for it not to work, and reasonably point to it working using the iPhone etc.
I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can provide a solution to this basic, but extremely frustrating, little problem.iPhone and iPad use a different way of accessing the server.
I don't know the exact details, but we are using Zarafa instead of Exchange and have the same problem:
iPhone and the likes can connect to Zarafas z-push interface, which is some identical interface to the native Exchange interface, while the desktop e-mail application tries to interface with the web front end (via http) of the server.
These are completely different setups and it depends on the actual installation of the server to get this going.
So, you will most likely need different access parameters for the desktop - and the web mail feature has to be enabled on the Exchange server.
In my opinion using the web mail interface is just silly. On the other hand, the native protocol has less features comparedto the web front end, so you are somehow stuck with sins of the past.

How can I receive mail not addressed to me?
This is a security question. Have any of you been receiving mail not addressed to you?
Lately, after the installation of MacOSX 10.4.10 on her G4 PowerBook, a family member has been receiving letters in Apple Mail not addressed to her. Had they arrived by mail, they should have been moved to her Junk Folder by her junk filter.
At first this alarmed me greatly (well, it still does): I removed her computer from the internet & performed examinations for break-ins; for I believed these letters were not mailed, but inserted into her inbox. Because she doesn't believe in security, I was limited to examining logs, and scanning her computer in firewire target disk mode. Both MacScan and ClamXav revealed nothing.
Puzzle 1: About a month ago, there appeared a finder image (happy blue face) at the bottom of her desktop (which is a unique grey-green designed by me). This disappeared in a day or two, at 5:00p on the dot, suggesting an application was involved. When I checked the logs at the exact date & time of desktop photo switches, there was an hiatus (which could have been natural).
Puzzle 2: Today she again received a letter not addressed to her, but to '[email protected]'. (I sent a letter from a mail alias to this address, but it did not appear in her mailbox.) The letter, by the way, was a phish from Germany, so I reported it immediately to Spam Cop. An addendum to this question contains the header of this letter, with the real person's name replaced by [email protected]. (Nothing here need be removed by a moderator.)
Has anyone an explanation for either of these puzzles? I think they're both important. (Before the internet was released upon the public, Postmasters would read the recipient and subject lines of dead letters, then forward them to whoever they thought it was for. 'Krystal2' has no relation to 'correctname', so that's unlikely.) Also, my wife has allowed me to secure her computer better, and no problems similar to 1 or 2 has ever appeared. Sorry, migraine over the holidays. Thank you: you're right! The reason I don't get any like this is because the SPAM must apparently use RFC822. This protocol appears deprecated. It appears stamped on some mail initially sent by Apple, but not others.
Thank you very much, for these have been concerning me. I'm used to seeing my name stamped by each relaying computer. A test letter I sent from my local ISP with a BCC to myself at a school across the country stamped my name at each step.
Your first sentence is slightly ambiguous. In my opinion, any problem whose only explanation at the moment is a security breach is then a security problem, and should be treated immediately as such. The Finder's image is still one.

Recommendations for interface problems in ical and mail?
Generally my impressions of 10.7 are positive... the full screen views are great and navigating among screens is super easy. It makes the screen on my 11" MacBook Air feel much larger.
But there are two major steps backwards in the two apps I use most: mail.app and iCal.
mail.app 5.0 - In mail.app 4.0 when a thread was selected, the /closed/ thread items would appear in the message browser. In mail.app 5.0, it is only possible to "preview" the a thread if you click on the small number adjacent to the thread in the preview pane. This previews the content of the thread, but does not mark the messages as "unread".
However, if you miss that little number icon (and accidentally click on the thread itself) the messages open in the message pane and they are marked as "read" automatically. So, this means that if I delete a message above a thread that contains unread messages, that thread becomes selected immediately and the messages are marked as "read" (even though I did not read them).
This makes it almost impossible for me to prioritize my email, I miss important emails because they're marked as "read", and I'm constantly hitting command+shift+U as I gingerly navigate my inbox.
iCal 5.0 - in iCal 4.0 there was a left pane that allowed users to select calendars /and/ see a simple "month preview". These were two very useful features, which allowed me to turn on and off calendars with a single click and see how upcoming weeks/months looked. In ical 5.0 there is no simple month view option (nor can one see two or more months simultaneously except in the cluttered "year" view).
Am I missing some buried setting that will return the 4.0 features I'm missing? Are there any suggestions (other than switching to other software) that folks can recommend?I completely agree. The conversations view in Lion Mail is pretty confusing and the whole read vs unread thing doesn't really work well. And the Unread smart mailbox doesnt update in real time anymore. But the bigger issue is iCal, which in my opinion is a total disaster. I am really shocked and angry at how bad iCal and the Address Book are. These are crucial apps and Apple has just thrown us a steaming pile. After all these years these apps should be beautiful shining examples of great software.

Why are Apple Mail and Addressbook not listed?
In Support, neither Apple Mail nor Addressbook are listed on OS apps. And if you go to Feedback > Product Feedback, there are 31 apps listed, but Apple Mail and Addressbook are not listed there either. Mac OS X is, so you need to use that for these apps.
But I think the lack of listing is not so bad, but is indicative that Apple doesn't seem to embrace these apps the way it does it's other OSX built in apps. They are basically good apps. I use them as my default apps along with iCal in order to always be in sync with the latest OSX release/update. I used to use 3rd party PIM apps but then had to always wait until they released their update to be in sync with the latest Apple OS. After awhile I realized the smarter approach was to use Apple's software as much as possible since they will be designed to work with the latest OS upon the release of the latest OS.
But the built in apps: iCal, Addressbook and Apple Mail, while sufficient, are not full featured robust apps like their 3rd party competitors. I have to assume some this is financial since they are included in the OS where as 3rd party apps cost $40 and up, plus upgrade costs after a certain cycle lifespan.
Personally, I never want to use a calendar, contact manager or email 3rd party clent again so that I am fully in the Apple family with hardware and software all made to work together.
If the reason these type apps are not more robust is because Steven didn't feel we needed more, or because there are only so much design and programmng resources Apple can apply to essentially "free" apps, I would welcome a paid for "Pro" version of these apps to pay for more features.

My Mail syncs, I don't know why yours doesn't. All the folders on the left of my Mail App are identical on all of my Macs and my iPhone.

When I click on a link in Mail, Safari crashes on my MacBook.
I'm running OS X 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.2, on a Mac Book 1. I've tried checking for software updates, ran disk permission repair, and cleared my cache. It doesn't happen every single time I go from Mail to a website, but about 90% of the time today, Safari has crashed when I clicked on a link in Mail. I get the same error message every time, which I'll post at the end of this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't really know what the problem is, and I don't have any other ideas.

UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.
