Opinion question

So, I "took the plunge", and decided to buy my first mac. I decided on a Mac Book Pro. So I go to the apple store, and pick out the 15" MBP with the glossy screen. I take it to check out and it all looks good. They apply my $200 student discount, but they can't do the expedited checkout, because I have a miniature credit card. So they put me in the big line.
Finally, when it's my turn to check out, they guy is asking me some questions (he was ecstatic that I was a grad student in CS that decided to switch to Mac). Anyway, he stops checking me out and tells me to hold on a sec and returns from the back of the store with another box. It's a refresh. Exactly the same specs, except with the matte screen. So at first I'm ambivalent, because I've had many laptop issues with dead pixels before, and "refresh" scares me. After he re-re-re assures me that it's treated as a brand new product, and all return / warranty stuff applies, I decide to go for it. So instead of $2500, I pay $2000, $200 student discount, $300 refresh.
The laptop is in perfect condition, no dead pixels, no dents , no scratches. The question of opinion I have for you guys is the following. Do you think it's worth it to take the screen I like less to save the $300. I do like the glossy better, I think it's brighter and richer. On the other hand, it's not like I love glossy and hate matte. The matte screen is nice, and I don't at all dislike it. I know this is a very subjective question, but what do you guys think. Should I save my $$ and stick with the screen I like slightly less, or should I take it back and tell them that after thinking it over I want to pay the extra $ and go for the glossy. I have until Jan 7 to decide.
Thanks for your input,
Rob

I just bought a MBP last weekend. I looked at glossy, compared it to the matte, and bought the matte--and that is after reading many posts about the "grainy" effect of the matte screens. Here's what I think about that. Its all blown out of proportion. The MBP line has much brighter screens than any previous Mac laptops. So, you are going to see the matte overlay more than if it was dimmed a little bit. Dim the screen by maybe 20% and that "grainy" effect disappears. I also think the whole "grainy" thing is so "diffuse" an issue, no one really knows if there screen is a problem. A dead pixel is a dead pixel. Nothing subjective there. Banding at the bottom of the screen is banding. Not much subjectivity there (mine has it, but barely, and I don't really care). But "graininess?" I wonder how many people heard that, then looked at their mattes screen, and said to themselves, you know, now that you mention it.... I did this same thing to myself. Then I hooked up my MBP to my beautiful external 22" matte finish monitor, loaded two Pics in PS CS3, slid both around, and notices almost no difference--especially when I turned down the brightness on the MBP screen.
Now, having said all that, one of the main things I do on my Mac is digital photo editing. I would say I have a pretty picky bias against a bad screen (and have had a few--not on the MBP). This screen is so much better than the screens on my two previous iBooks, and on my son's PB 12" it isn't even funny, and that is despite having noticed that, if I wanted to think it was grainy, I could say it was. I think any matte finish LCD screen, with brightness turned way up, will end up looking grainy.
This reminds me of the argument that surfaces in D-SLRs, where camera companies have to balance good sharpening against noise. More sharp equals more noise. Less noise means softer shots. Apple decides to issue a brighter (and probably more expensive) monitor so its easier to see during the day, especially with a glossy screen competing with glare, the tradeoff being graininess at such bright levels. People notice the screens are much much brighter, but also more grainy. They take their MBPs to the genius bar, and so on. I for one am glad Apple gave me the choice: bright screen for office work during the day (who cares about graininess--I can see the screen more easily for Word, email, Safari), dimmer screen in my home office during the day and night (when detail matters, and I want the screen dimmer for more accurate color rendition, and easier to deal with when using Logic). Thanks Apple. Its about balance and choice.

  • Simple opinion question from a newbie about IDE's

I have been looking around for the best architecture for a n-tier client server app. I have been using the jsp/servlet architecture for a while, and have recently found out about web-start . There seems to me to be a great advantage to be able to maintain state on the client, as opposed to having multiple roundtrips to the server.
    My questions are:
    1) What is the easiest (i.e., any open source tools/ide's?) way to build a full featured gui for a desktop application that will connect to servlets or web services and can be deployed via web-start? I would prefer a gui builder with many available widgets - are there any out there?
    2) what is the difference between JNLP and web-start?
    3) How do you bind gui controls (swing/swt/whatever) to the data? I.E., I used to work in Borland c++ builder and there were data-aware controls. Does java have any similar controls that can be bound to a datasources?

    1. I'm sure there are a few out there, but the ones I've tried created crap code, so I usually roll my own.
    2. Java WebStart is the name of the JNLP implementation that comes with Sun's JRE (but the two are often used as synonyms). There are other JNLP projects, but most of them seem to be dead.
    3. I'll leave this to someone else.

  • Opinion question re: storage of media

I have very little space left on my mac.  I would like to reclocate my photos to an external hard drive to free up space.  Currently I have two external hard drives, both 2 tb, and a time machine that I think is filled.  Would you keep both photos and movies on one hard drive and use the other hard drive as a backup, or would you separate the movies on one hard drive and the photos on the other and let time machine back up both.

Keep ALL the media on one drive and TM on it's own drive. NEVER NEVER NEVER mix a backup drive with any storage. The reason being is if/when that drive crashes you will have lost all the data and backup! For the media drive you may need a high speed drive and bus. The only reason I can think of for a high speed drive would be if you put photos on it and do lots of editing on them in something like Aperture, Photoshop etc...If that does describe your needs get a 7200RPM drive AND use the fastest bus your computer has. This will probably be Firewire or Firewire 800 depending on what iMac you own. If this does not describe your needs as long you keep the media (movies, photos & music) on one drive and the TM on a separate drive you're good to go.

  • Opinion question: best car adapter?

I'm thinking about getting a car adapter for my mini (the thing that transmits thru the radio, if it's called an adapter)...does anyone have any opinions about which one is a good buy and works well? I have a cd player in my car with AM/FM and while I love that (birthday present to myself last year!) I'd like to be able to use my mini for long trips as well.
    Thanks!

Monster's iCruze is the way to go if your car will accept it. I'm having 2 issues with it right now: Monster seems to have discontinued it and there is no longer any support on their website, and the cable that connects the iPod to the iCruze becomes damaged even with normal and careful use.
But as far as sound quality is concerned, you won't beat it.

    Hi All !
I did install your browser on XP pro as administarator. I did allow to my firewall all protocol's that it need to browse. But i can't use it on limited user. This limited account is my default system account on XP. An administrator i am using for configuration, installation and unistallation only. The big problem that safary can't browse to any page on limited user.
So, why i need browser that can't reach any web-site ? Very secure- yes, useful - no
More about security: i didn't find any extention/plagin for full contol on scripts on each page(like NoScript in firefox), cookies( coockiesafe in firefox), refferer (refcontrol in firefox)on each site ,SecureLogin (in firefox)
    Other things that i didn't find :
online translator for different languages, spell check for other languages, advertisement blocking on sites and google, bookmarks recorder.
Suggestions: if you want really that safary will be the best browser in the world :
    1.enable running on limited user
2.full support for firefox extensions( at least those, that i did mention )

Put Safari v. 3.1 on a PC. Never used a Mac so I know nothing about its OS or appearance. Been looking over these posts and cannot figure out if I am lacking features that did not install or if features are not available in Safari.
One example (there are many), the address bar has no pull down arrow to access already entered URLs. Is this normal?
One other annoyance, with FF or IE, once I've visited a URL that requires an ID/Pass (or other data box entry), when I return, typing in the first character calls up the ID and loads the Pass, or performs similarly with any data entry. Not Safari: always got to retype the entire string. This normal?
I guess my problem is not knowing if Apple's description of Safari's features on v. 3.1 are identical in the Mac as well as the PC.
By the way, I am trying Safari because FF (which I have been using for at least three years) is slowing to a crawl - even in Safe Mode with all extensions disabled. Safari far exceeds FF speed but, then too, Safari seems to be a skeleton of a browser.
    Thanks, Monk

  • External Hard Drive Questions

This is more of an opinion question.
I have a MBP with an 80GB hard drive which always seems to be full up. I also have a 250GB hard drive which is nearly full up. The 250GB is not used for backup, i have all my photos and big files on there and none of my files are actually backed up
I was thinking about getting another 500GBish hard drive and using it for more space and also time machine - can it be used for both? Can anyone recommend a good cheap hard drive?
How well does time machine work with laptops? would i have to plug it in every night? does it have a sort of separate trash kept on my computer which is only deleted when i plug in the Mac to the External hard drive. Or is anything i delete without the external hard drive attached deleted forever?
Or, is it worth the hastle and cost to upgrade my MBP internal hard drive?
    Thanks very much

okay so what would a cheap hard drive from PC World be like - like this Western Digital Elements Desktop 500GB 3.5" - although i imagine that link will probably time out.

I think i want to stick with Time Machine just because it looks so flash and easy to use really, plus i would have to pay for Super Duper
I dont really feel confident switching the hard drive myself, i tried doing the RAM once which is alot easier and i competly messed it up and had to take it to an apple store. How much would an apple store charge if i asked them to do it?
Would it be okay to have time machine running at the same time as also having separate media on the same hard drive? How much space would time machine take up?
Thanks very much for your replies

  • Easiest Question - Should I use some BI Object?

This potentially is the easiest question here.
Before I spend tons of time and effort learning BI to see if I can do something, I thought I'd just throw out a query here.
I'm creating an Interactive Form that the user will fill out, when they are finished they will press a 'post' button that will create a simple xml or flat file of the information and send it to the necessary parties.  However, the business wants to 'report' on this information as well so they feel we need to put this data into COPA. Another collegue opted for an SIS structure or something like that. While both of these will work (the COPA option is the least desired) I thought, 'we don't have BI, but maybe I can post that data directly to a cube or something??'.
    Hence the query.
Should we just simply post to an SIS structure, low overhead, pretty easy...or should we somehow put it in BI, lots of overhead, lots of learning because we do not have it, but scalable and positions us for growth.
    See...just an opinion question.
    Thanks,
    Greg

I hope this is the possible solution for your query.
    1. Go to SICF and activate this web service: u201C/sap/bc/srt/rfc/sap/QUERY_VIEW_DATAu201D
    2. Go to transaction WSCONFIG and enter service destination u201CQUERY_VIEW_DATAu201D and enter variant u201Cquery_view_datau201D and hit enter. Currently, there are no released services so create a new service.

    6. Enter external alias u201C/sap/bw/xml/soap/queryviewu201D and enter description u201CSAP BI Web Service u2013 XML Result Setu201D
    7. Specify your security and user ID on the u201CLogon datau201D tab.
    8. Specify u201C/sap/bc/srt/rfc/sap/QUERY_VIEW_DATAu201D under the u201CTrg Elementu201D tab.
    9. Save your external alias.
    10. Go to transaction WSADMIN -> Goto -> Administration Settings. Ensure that the path to your J2EE is specified here and save this.
    11. Find your web service and choose the u201CWeb service homepageu201D
    12. Login to your ABAP system from the Web Service Navigator
    13. Choose Test -> GetQueryViewData to test this service.
    14. Enter and Infoprovider and Query and send the request to test this web service. Note: If the query has mandatory variables, those must be passed in the parameter. For thesake of this test, use a query without variables.
    15. Ensure the request and response are successful.
    16. If you have issues, make sure you activate your Web Service and Interface in SE80
    17. Here is an example of how to pass parameters for filter values using WEB API commands. We are passing the FILTER_IOBJNM=0D_CHANNEL and FILTER_VALUE=3.
    18. Here is an example of how to pass parameters for variable values using WEB API commands. In this case,we are using a selection option variable. We are passing the following parameters:
    VAR_NAME_1=DISTGOP
    VAR_OPERATOR_1=EQ
    VAR_VALUE_LOW_EXT_1=3
    VAR_VALUE_HIGH_EXT_1=5

  • My questions before purchasing...

I want to purchase the new iphone 4, but I have some questions that I need answers to first so that I can make sure it's a good idea
    1. Is it still possible to have individual plans tack on an extra line with ATT for $10, basically circumventing the family rate? We don't use very many minutes, so it would be nice to save the extra $20 if we can...but it's not the end of the world if we are forced to go with the lowest family rate.
    2. Can you do email and calendar cloud syncing without using mobileme? What other options are there? (I do use google calendar, but my email is privately hosted)
    3. This is more of an opinion question that I'm curious about- do you think your iPhone has improved productivity in your personal or work life in any way? How so?

    Here are the steps:
Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores
Tap your Apple ID at the top, then tap "View Apple ID".
Sign in.  You will see "Country/Region" there.  Change it.

  • AMD/ATI driver problems on a Dell laptop with attached dual monitors

I have a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with a docking station for two additional monitors. I'm shooting for a "big desktop" setup, with my laptop display and the two external monitors forming one large multi-monitor X screen.
When deciding which video driver I'd need, I did the usual:
    $ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Venus XT [Radeon HD 8800M Series]
Which is weird, because the M4800 isn't shipped with 8800M cards. Rather, it's shipped with the AMD FirePro M5100 Mobility Pro (see above link) (also, too many "Pros", AMD...).
I tried the open-source driver, but I couldn't get both my external monitors working in tandem, so I went with catalyst-test, since the non-beta version of the proprietary driver doesn't support the 3.13 kernel (or my alleged 8800M series card, for what it's worth).
My display setup using catalyst-test is still far from ideal. My dual (horizontally adjacent) monitors reset to cloned/mirrored desktops after every reboot, and my machine refuses to show three monitors (dual monitors + laptop display), even with the 2GB of dedicated RAM in my graphics card (see above M4800 link). There's other miscellaneous annoyances as well.
Using hardinfo, I see that my VGA driver thinks it only has 256MB of RAM... which doesn't align with the M4800 specs. Is there a way to change this value?
Just today, I found the catalyst-firepro driver, which I think might be the correct driver for my laptop, at least given the specs on the M4800 from the website.
There's also the option of not using my AMD card at all, and just using the Intel graphics on my laptop. (I had to disable hybrid graphics in my BIOS to get any AMD-specific drivers to work). I'd like to steer away from this, due to the performance loss, but I'd be willing to make the change if the pros outweighed the cons.
As I see it, I have a few options:
AMD/ATI open source driver: Can't seem to get two monitors working, much less three...
catalyst-test: Any two monitors will work together, but not three. Other annoyances.
    catalyst-firepro: Have not tested yet.
Intel open-source driver with AMD card disabled: Have not tested yet.
Can anyone who has had similar issues and/or hardware offer a best course of action which has worked for them? I know we're supposed to avoid "opinion" questions, but I think this is grounded enough in the scientific method to merit some helpful responses.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    clfarron4 wrote:
The last option to me is screaming catalyst-pxp at me, because that's one of the few options if you have integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card.
Let me get this straight: Can you disable the either or both of the Intel/AMD graphics in the BIOS settings? If so, but don't want to disable either, you might want to look at the hybrid graphics section of the wiki.
I know about powerXpress and I think I'd like to avoid it. My experience with hybrid graphics on other Linux distributions is that it's rather unstable or just plain unsupported. If someone can convince me otherwise, given their experience with hybrid graphics on Arch/Linux, I might reconsider.
I'm fairly certain I can enable either of my GPU's separately, but I'll have to check for sure next I reboot my PC.
The last option I mentioned because I thought the Intel drivers might be more robust than the AMD drivers, which have don't have a sterling reputation when it comes to supporting Linux (compared to nVidia anyways, who I know in the past have had good Linux support).

  • Updating my Mac's firnware WILL IT AFFECT MY iPod?

Okay I just bought a new 80 GB video iPod and have filled it with plenty of purchases from the iTunes Store, which I am now in the process of backing up. I started a similar thread like this earlier saying I had not backed up my purchases yet and didn't want to risk downloading an update that causes problems. -- earlier thread(s) to date though were in the Mac Mini board
I remember Security Update 2006-001 on my older Mac the 12' PowerBook G4 killed Safari. I had to do a clean OS reinstall of the operating system and then reinstall major upgrades that do work like Mac OS 10.3.9 and QuickTime 7 over again.
I remember iTunes 6.0.2 broke Disk Utility on my PowerBook and hearing it had problems in Windows too. Was wasted time trying to fix it -- I did eventually bit should not have had that problem
I remember iTunes 7.0.0 would not work -- iTunes would open and then freeze or crash automatically.
I have an 80 GB video iPod now with iTunes 7.0.2 and don't want to risk this firmware update ruining my iPod. Since I started the earlier thread I have begun to back up a good number of my iTunes purchases. Should I still hold off on the update?
It is a firmware update for the Mac Mini released about a week ago -- it said it was supposed to fix a problem with a delay when you wake Mac Mini from sleep that it takes a few minutes longer than it should. Its the Mac MIni EFI firmware update.
Now I have backed up my purchases but don't want my new iPod getting screwed up.
I know Apple recently released a new firmware update for at least all Intel based Macs and I have an Intel based Mac Mini at home with Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8 and I don't want to install it if it causes problems. The Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 in general was a major headache as iot broke Safari I had to reinstall OS X from scratch -- this was Mac OS X Panther though on a PowerBook G4 I have -- and that had OS 10.3.9 -- anyways it caused serious problems and I don't want to risk installing a defective upgrade again.
iTunes 6.0.2 for Mac and Windows also had problems -- I have a PC at home also with Windows and heard of problems Windows users had with that update. On my Mac iTunes 6.0.2 broke Disk Utility I had to delete the chess.app file for the chess game to make it work again.
iTunes 7.0.0 was also a major headache as iTunes would automatically crash as soon as I opened it or freeze up and not respond in which case I had no choice but to force quit iTunes.
I don't want to take another serious risk. If the update Mac Mini EFI Firmware Update version 1.1 -- which according to Software Update is 1.9 MB is safe I am willing to download it but only after getting a second opinion.

    Question is resolved!

You might. If you have a FireWire port, get a F/W drive. F/W 800, if you have it, is of course better than F/W 400. F/W 400 may be slightly faster than USB, in theory, but in practice it's often slower and less reliable.
If USB, get one with it's own power supply. Taking power from your USB port can be "iffy."
And your TM drive should be 2-3 times the size of what it's backing-up (the data on your internal HD). That varies greatly, of course, depending on how you use your Mac.

  • Camera Suggestions Part 2:DVX100 or HDRFX1

A couple months ago I posed the question of whether Final Cut Studio or a new camera would be more beneficial with my limited budget. Most suggested I go with the camera. Now, I'm posing another opinion question: Panasonic DVX100 or Sony's new High Def HDRFX1?
A little info: I'm a high-school student who really enjoys editing/writing/shooting/directing short films. I also make videos by commission so I can afford new equipment. I'm running the below computer with Final Cut Pro 4.5 (HD). I'll use the camera for personal use (my own short "films") and my small "business" which consists mainly of sports video editing, graduation/wedding videos, and small advertisements. I don't have an HD television.
I initially wanted to go the with Panasonic DVX100, until recently I started considering the Sony, especially with the emminent switch to all-HD. I have a pretty tight budget, but should soon be able to buy either camera (or if you suggest, a similarly priced camera.) This board has given me so much guidance, I felt it would be the best place for help. I've researched both cameras fairly extensively, and unfortunately neither jumps out as being much better than the other. I really like the "film" look, but that's not a completely critical factor.
Thanks in advance for your responses, and I really respect everyone here's opinion.
    JC

Upgrade to FCP 5 and get an HDV camera. An HD camera will produce better SD footage due to oversampling and you'll be ready for your first HD project when requested.
HDV takes the same disk space as DV since it is 25 MB/sec. It does not do real 24p but has a "Cine look" The new Panasonic HDV camera will do real 24p but it will be more expensive.
I like the Panasonic HDV camera best.

    ALso look at the JVC

The HDV format is highly compressed and you may see blocking in fast moving objects since the GOP is 12 frames.
As you know, the future is HD and I wouldn't invest too much more money in SD today.

  • How to backup NAS Drive to Time Machine

My iMac, early 2009 model has a 1TB HDD which is now full with a few GB to spare, but not enough for any kind of video edited etc.
So, I purchased a NAS drive to use as an external storage device, so I can move and free up disk space on the iMac..... An other reason why I got a NAS drive instead of a regular external drive was because the WD My Cloud let's me create my own Cloud storage and also stream audio, image and video files directly to my TV, eliminating the need for an Apple TV or to keep my iMac/iTunes turned on.
Anyways, my issue is, I need Time Machine to backup my NAS drive and I don't know how to do this. Because once, I delete the files off my iMac, TM will not be making any future backups of the files I've moved.
There has to be a solution, any script/software? Any commands I can enter into Terminal for TM to see and backup my NAS?
ONLY IF, it was easy as upgrading the iMac ram, to upgrade the Hard Drive, I would have upgraded the internal HDD instead.
    Please help, urgent.
    Thanks in advance.

My question now is, is it worth keeping the NAS My Cloud drive and backing up My Book to the NAS My Cloud drive instead of to Time Capsule ?
Or shall I just stick to backing up to TC ?
This is more an opinion question.. IMHO the WD MyCloud will not be as reliable as the TC.
Apple build stuff with lots of tricky bits and one of those tricky bits is when you try to use non-apple products they simply have more issues.. Apple do not support TM to a WD mycloud.. they support it to a TC.
If you want reliable backups.. use CCC to the MyCloud or the TC.. that is not a problem.
Or use Time Machine to the Time Capsule.
If I needed to recover a file, I would use the TM backup.
If I lost a disk, I would use the CCC backup to restore it.
They are different.. they have different strengths and for reliability with Mavericks in particular.. I would rate CCC as top of the class and TM as the dunce in the corner.
So IMHO for the $40 cost of CCC I would do both. It is not hard.. nor expensive.. and if your data is at all valuable to you.. the extra cost is fairly small. You already have all the hardware.
