Opinion Wanted: 2.26 Ghz 13" MBP or 2.53Ghz 13"MBP???

Hi,
I'm looking to get a new MacBook Pro, and was wondering if you think I should get the 2.26 Ghz version or the 2.53Ghz version, or somewhere in between(upgrading the RAM or hardrive on the 2.26Ghz)
Here's what *I'm going to be using it for*:
Essays for school, web browsing, all the programs in the iLife '09 suite, and a little Final Cut Express.
Please let me know what you would recommend,
Brandon

Any of these will work. Final cut is the most demanding thing you have listed. and both of these would be well above the requirements.
With that being said I would recommend using your student discount or buying a refurished model. Both should come with a copy of iLife. If you dont own a copy of Final Cut Express then this site has it for $99.00 http://sfsubookstore.com/catalog/productinfo.php/productsid/445300
I would upgrade to 4gb of ram as it's the best performance for the ammount spent. www.macsales is a great site for aftermarket ram. As for a hard drive I would get the macbook with the cheapest drive and upgrade it later. Remember you will need a 2.5 inch 9.5mm sata II drive for a upgrade if you are saving allot of video. If you plan on buying apple care you have untill your warrenty is up to buy it. Some student book stores have even better deals on this. BE CAREFULL ON BUYING THIS FROM EBAY. If they dont send you the sealed packaging and it does come with packaging then you are buying a generated code that will register but once someone else buys the real code from apple you will loose the money you spent and possibly left with no option of even buying it. You may also want to consider a laptop insurance policy that covers accidental damage and theft from a company such as www.safeware.com.
System Requirements
A Mac computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, Intel Core 2 Duo, or Intel Xeon processor
For AVCHD: A Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of RAM or more
An AGP or PCI Express graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme; or an Intel GMA integrated graphics processor in a MacBook or Mac mini computer
Some FxPlug filters are not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors.
A display with 1024-by-768 resolution or higher
A DVD drive for installation
Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
QuickTime 7.2 or later
500MB of disk space to install Final Cut Express and LiveType
Additional 500MB to install LiveType content

Today a see several current prices for Adobe CC offerings  other then this special offer

I'm pretty sure "the current price of the offering" means the price at the time they renew, as opposed to the "current" price (meaning today).
I'm not a lawyer though, so I could be 100% wrong.

• MBP(Leopard) has ALL music (Amazon, my own CDs,etc) in iTunes. I do NOT want to use in new MBP(Yosemite). Now, iPodTouch64 is now stuck at "plug in to iTunes" screen. Can I plug it in to my old MBP without fear of losing ALL?

My iPod64Touch is frozen at that screen, with no way to get to settings. I have even pressed the top (on/off) button and the button at the bottom (front) at the same time, and it just returns to the frozen screen. Let it drain, recharged, and get the same screen. I'm sure this is Apple's way of forcing me to send all my 6674 items to my new MBP(Yosemite), and know it will not include my Amazon purchases and personal CDs that are on the old MBP.  I don't use videos, photos, or anything other than music on the iPods.
ITunes on the old computer, under Devices>Device backups, shows:
iPodTouch 64 ------------------------------------12/24/14 9:33pm
iPodTouch 64 - Feb 14, 2015 7:07pm ----12/24/14 9:33pm
I use this device in the cars only, and have played it many times until last week, when I got the frozen screen after disconnecting from my husband's car. The CAR couldn't have tried an update, right? I forgot about Sync, didn't I? I've now checked the box to "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically". Why didn't I see that before now? It's possible that the update was so large, that the iPodTouch wouldn't take it and just quit, without completing the update, but left me this unresponsive screen.
So can I safely just plug the USB from the iPod64 into the older 2008 MBP and update it from there (WITHOUT DANGER OF LOSING ENTIRE COLLECTION)? Make it simple; I'm 74 and not as savvy as I used to be! I tend to zone out with long descriptions, but if you have to....fire away...between hubby and me, we can usually figure it out.
I haven't migrated from older to newer MBP or to iPad4 yet because I wanted to be selective in doing so. I am offloading all my photos, digital art, documents and important Applications onto separate thumb drives, before upgrading the old MBP, and will probably backup the whole thing on a new external backup drive, too. Then, will upgrade to Snow Leopard (the last update the 2008 MBP will take), and use it almost exclusively offline.
I have a 'Classic iPod' that I purposely haven't updated since the last of '14. All purchases from all sources are on there (as on the '08MBP) and I want to keep it that way. We keep it in players and do not plan to update it or play anywhere else, except perhaps with headphones or through the tuner occasionally. I'm assuming it is safe from the same fate?

• 2.16 GHz 15" MBP or wait for the 17" MBP?

So I'm at the mall today with the wife when we happen to go into the Apple Store so she could look at some iPod stuff. I'm playing around with a MBP when the guy tells me that they just got in a shipment of 15" MBP's in all three processor speeds! What luck!
With all the shipping delays for the MBP's, I just couldn't pass it up, so I ended up leaving with the "Ultimate" version: 2.16 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 256 VRAM and a 100GB 7200 RPM drive.
So here's the deal:
The 15.4" inch screen is awesome and big enough for what I do (Logic Pro sequencing), but to me a 17 inch screen would be desirable as well. It's not an absolute must by any means considering I have a 20" Dell LCD display that the MBP will be connected to 60-70% of the time, but all things being equal, if given a choice between a 15" or a 17" configured exactly the same, I'd take the 17" just for the extra screen real estate. So although I'm EXTREMELY tempted to, I haven't opened the box for my new MBP yet because of the recent rumors of a possible 17" MBP being announced during the Apple Birthday event. The 14-day return period for my MBP ends April 1st so assuming they actually annouce a 17" model by then, I could return the 15.4" unopened for a 100% refund by April 1st and then turn right around and order the 17".
The question:
Given the current MBP supply issues and the availability (or lack thereof) of an 8x SuperDrive to go in it, realistically what are the chances that a 17" MBP is made available in April?
What would you do in this situation: Don't open the 15" and wait until April 1st to see if a 17" is announced or forget the 17" and stick with the 15"?

Thanks for the replies, guys.
The more I think about it, the more I think I'm gonna just stick with the 15". Sure, a 17" would be nice, but I've already spent way more than I should've anyway. Like I said earlier, I don't do any graphics-intensive work or gaming so I really don't need a 17" LCD - especially with a 20" LCD to connect it to. Besides, even if a 17" was announced, it would obviously be more expensive and would extend me even more than I have already. I've fed the credit card too much as it is!
I hate to admit it but the truth of the matter is that this is yet another case of me being greedy again; I do this with EVERY technical purchase I make; from iPods to TV's, I ALWAYS want the latest & greatest, the biggest & best and I'll try to find every way I can to justify it - even when I really don't need it. It is for that reason alone that credit card companies absolutely LOVE me. It's messed up being cursed with AFFNTS (Always Fiending For New Toys Syndrome). It's a disease, I tell you!
In my case, the 15.4 is screen is big enough for OCCASIONAL PORTABLE web surfing and Logic Pro music work. Like I said earlier, the MBP is gonna be sitting on a desk and connected to a 20" LCD display at least 70% of the time (probably more than that). I don't travel so the most I would ever be portable would be moving from the desk to the bedroom or the living room when my wife wants to use our other PC - and that would only be if I deem it safe to have my MBP out around my hyperactive 22-month old son who tries to grab everything he sees!
The bottom line is the 15.4" is fine and I think I'll stick with it. I wouldn't be settling in my mind either because I actually had my heart set on the 2.16GHz 15.4" model in the first place until I played around with a friend's 17" PowerBook and started thinking "Wouldn't the extra 2" of screen real estate be nice?" That's how the drama always starts...
Anyway, they'll no doubt drop a 17" inch real soon (maybe in April) I'm sure and I'll probably be upset for a minute, but I'll get over it. Frankly, I just picked a bad time to start craving for a Mac. As such, I've been seriously obsessed with this whole Intel switch and debating when and what to buy ever since January (which is waaay too long) and I'm tired of thinking about it.
I got an awesome machine right now and that's good enough for me. So without further delay, I'm gonna pop the box open and start enjoying the fruits of my labor!
Now I just hope its defect-free...
Thanks for the opinions.
Ken

• Purchase Question: MBP Retina 2.3 GHz or MBP 15in 2.6 GHz? As much input as possible preferred.

I want to purchase a new MacBook Pro since mine is from early 2008 and needs replacing. I know some stuff about computers, but definitely not enough to make an informed decision, so I was wondering if anyone could help me decide between these two models: the new MacBook Pro with Retina display (the cheaper one with 2.3 GHz) or the updated MacBook Pro 15in with 2.6 GHz. I just wanted to know which one would overall be better, run faster, hold the most documents/files, etc. I mainly use my laptop for personal usage, such as social media, movies, music, and I use Photoshop & Lightroom in an editing capacity also, but really for personal use, not professional.
So if anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for upgrades I should possibly purchase when ordering my laptop, that'd be helpful as well.

It's actually easy to install and purchase parts on your own.
Many on the forums recommend Crucial or OWC to get RAM from, I'll be picking up an 8GB kit from Crucial at some point for my MBP. Apple actually has an article instructing you on how to install your own RAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270 (I should add, for 2011 models and up, 16GB can be used, but is not stated/supported by Apple on that support article)
You can also buy any 2.5 inch drive and fit it to your MBP. It's also relatively easy to install. Additionally, you can (for sure) void your warranty and remove the CD drive to have 2 HDD's in the MBP. Any problems you should run into your parts (memory or HDD) need to be dealt with by the manufacturer and not Apple. For example, if your new drive fails, don't take it to Apple without reinserting the original drive.

• Upgrading RAM & HD on my 2.33 ghz C2D MBP, suggestions/opinions?

So I'm looking to upgrade my MBP 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, to 4 GB of RAM and also upgrading the internal drive to a 320GB 7200 rpm and I wanted opinions from people here.
I've been researching these upgrade options the last few days and came across a lot of people talking about the limitations that the system will have in regards to the utilizing all 4gigs. Apparently it will register all 4, but will only utilize 3.2 of the total 4 gigs of RAM.
Now I don't think it's that wise to install different sized pairs of RAM sticks, so I'm probably just going to go in for the full 4, but I'm curious to know that if the system does register all 4, but is only using 3.2, is it possible that certain software will still be able to utilize all 4 gigs of RAM?
Also, when talking about the internal drive, would it be better to stick with the 320 gb @ 7200, or for just $50 more, get a 500 gb @ 7200?
I do a lot of video and audio production and live performance, but I'm wondering it's worth the extra money to get more space, when I'm just going to be back it up anyway, since it is a portable. However, 500 gb's would be the same size as the external that I'm also looking to get, which makes me wonder if I should get the 320 gb and stick with the 500 gb external. So at least that way, I can keep dumping things, when my internal gets full. Cause I think if I have an internal that is 500 gbs I might get too used to have a lot of data on here.
Right now, I'm using a 160 @ 7200, so either one would definitely be nicer that what I have now. And some of the reasons I'm changing it, besides the capacity, is because it's seems to make a bit of noise at start up and I'm a bit paranoid it will be going soon. This beast has last a while, seen a lot of travel and been through **** and back, but it's never failed me. I kind of hate to change it, but also need to upgrade my OS and figured it might be a good time to just get everything up to date.
SO YAH, I hope that makes sense some how to everyone and that some of you could give me some possible opinions. I'm probably going to take my MBP down to Tekserve later to get this started, but wanted to see what people here thought. I always enjoy these forums, and value a lot of what I read here. So let me here it!

I cannot say for a fact, but from everything I know/understand about Macs and computers, I'm confident the answer is "no."

Unless you've found some sight-unseen deal on a 320, you should be able to get a 500 for less than $50 more.

But until it is backed up, more storage is nice. And if for whatever reason you cannot backup to the portable HD, that extra room could come in handy.
However, 500 gb's would be the same size as the external that I'm also looking to get, which makes me wonder if I should get the 320 gb and stick with the 500 gb external. I suspect that will be true. HDs are kind of like garages, storage sheds, and basements; the bigger they are, the more stuff they seem to collect. But as far as a HD is concerned, I consider that a convenience, not having to throw things away until/unless I 100% know they're junk.
Right now, I'm using a 160 @ 7200, so either one would definitely be nicer that what I have now. And some of the reasons I'm changing it, besides the capacity, is because it's seems to make a bit of noise at start up and I'm a bit paranoid it will be going soon.
Sounds like you depend on it for income, so being proactive would seem to be a good idea. I know of people who replace a HD every three years regardless of its "health."

• Wanting to link my 2011 MBP to HD TV

I have the new MBP 13" and I want to link it to our HD TV so that we can put photos and videos etc for friends and family to see.
Can you tell me the bits I would need to make this happen please?
We have a Samsung TV at the moment...if that makes any difference.
Thanks, Zoe

You will need the following items:
Diaplayport - Hdmi adapter
and
Hdmi cable
However, those are just examples of what you need. You can buy another hdmi-cable that is longer. The modern HD TV's have Hdmi inputs, so I believe that won't be a problem.

• MBP 2.5 gHz vs MBP 2.4 gHz Display Difference

Has anyone notice the 2.4 gHz MBP screen looks (in terms of color and appearance) like the 2.4 MacBook (not Pro) screen. My friend has a 2.4 gHz MBP and I have the 2.5 gHz MBP and there is definitely a difference in screen brightness and appearance

The part number for the panels in all the new MBPs, I am told by an Apple rep, is the same. What they don't tell you, however, is that the there are different manufacturers of the panels and that it is a lottery as to which panel you will get. Using Colorsync Utility, I was able to determine that mine is a 9C85 - the other is a 9C84. The 9C85 is made by Taiwanese manufacturer Chimei and the other is made by either LG or Samsung.
As you all know, when you buy a LCD TV, you will choose one model over another even if the specs are the same - it all comes down to personal preference probably borne out of the quality of the manufacturing process. So the MBP you see in the store, may not be the same as the one you take home.
I don't know about you, but I do not believe that Apple should get their parts from different manufacturers for such an important component. Everybody loves the screen in the MBA, myself included. At least it comes from the same manufacturer - AU Optronics. The one you see in the store, is the one you will get. Apple probably can use one manufacturer in this instance because of volumes. Volumes or not, I'd rather wait for the best screen, rather than be lumped with something from a Taiwanese company that I would never knowingly by a product from - I thought when I was buying my new MBP, that it was made to the highest standards in ALL respects.
The screen, after all, is the thing you look at the most.
Imagine if Apple started using different manufacturers for the CPU - why should it be any different for the screen?

• OPINION WANTED: Why can't Sun make the setBounds more meaningful?

Hi,
I am wondering why Sun doesn't add some brains to the setBounds method. I bring this up because of my current situation.
I have two panels, A & B. A is added to B, and A can be dragged around "on top" of B. But I can not allow the user to drag A out of the bounds of B. so I have to do all this checking to make sure it doesn't happen. It would be much simpler if the A panel could know what the size of its "playground" is.
Doing something like this would be nice,
A.setPlayground(B.getBounds());then as A is dragged around, it knows what its "playground" is and knows that its own bounds cannot not leave the "playground". But currently, there is no such implementation, so I would basically have to create my own JPanel class, and include this functionality...which I wish Sun would implement.
Anyone else think this is a good idea or worth while to do? Whats your opinion?
Thanks.

Ok, that is basically doing the same as rect.contains(rect) .....and instead of creating new rectangles i could just do this:
if (rectangleA.contains(panelB.getBounds())) ...However, a problem still occurs that a user could drag the panel quickly, and its location gets set so that it is no longer "contained" in rectangleA.
if rectangleA's bounds are [0, 0, 200, 200] the panelB's bounds could get set so that its bounds are [200,y,w,h] ....so u can see the x value is at the max of rectangleA's bounds....so when i try to do rectangleA.contains(panelB.getBounds()) it fails....so to fix this I have to do this:
if ((panelB.getMinX() < 0) ||
                                           (panelB.getMinY() < 0) ||
                                                 (panelB.getMaxX() > rectangleA.getMaxX()) ||
                                                 (panelB.getMaxY() > rectangleA.getMaxY())) {
                                      temp.setLocation(oldLocation);
}i wish i didnt have to do all that checking like that.

• Did I break it?  Opinion wanted regarding Hitachi Cinemastar 1TB HD install

Hello Forums,
Yesterday I failed to install a 1TB Hitachi Cinemastar hard drive (to be used for media storage) in my Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual Cores 2007). This was my first hard drive install and have no idea if I caused the problem or the hard drive was faulty.
I installed the hard drive using the Apple's DIY instructions: (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacProHardDriveDIY.pdf). This process went smoothly, i.e., the drive fit snugly in the bay. When I powered up the computer the new hard drive made loud unhealthy sputtering noises. After the OS loaded, Disk utility popped up and recognized the drive. I set the number of partitions to 1 and Mac OS Extended (Journaled). When Disk Utility started formatting, the unhealthy sputtering noises became louder and more synchronized. Afterwards the drive was grayed out, not knowing what to do next I clicked "mount." Disk Utility responded with "mount failed," so I tried to reboot. The drive made louder noises to the point that I was actually kinda freaked out and scared and hoping the computer would shut down ASAP. But no, the computer froze. After waiting 5 minutes I manually shut down the computer despite the freakishly busy sounds coming from the drive. When I turned the computer back on the drive made the same loud noises (they eventually stopped after surfing the internet for 15 minutes), but the point is Disk Utility cannot find the drive. The computer does not believe it exists. So my question is: who is responsible for this problem, Hitachi or me?

RMA the drive. Curious as to where you got it, whether it was Newegg and OEM or elsewhere...?
OWC is having weekend specials and discounts on some WD, Hitachi and F1 (Samsung) drivers.

• Can't see backup I want to restore on new MBP.

3 weeks ago I was backing up 3 computers the same way...
PMG5, PBG4 and a 15" MacBook Pro. I changed jobs and sent the MBP to my old employer. I bought a new MBP today and thought I'd simply be able to move my user data over via TC. Alas, after 3-4 hours, it's only offering me the G4 and G5s to restore from. What have I done wrong?

I forgot to mention...
If I look at TC through finder on the G5, I see the three "sparsebundle" files, including for the MBP.

• Opinion wanted FxFactory and Motion 3

Looking for opinions on the FxFactoy Plugin. Is it worth it? Any bugs? Performance issues?
Thanks,
Ed

I am biased, yes but the boys from Noise Industries were first on the block in harnessing Quartz Composer & FxPlug technology together. When they first released FxFactory, a lot of competitors scoffed at the new technology. A few years in, they are desperately trying to keep up.
As you said, download the installer as most plugins have a 15 day free trial. You can then make up your mind for yourself.

I just released an update to the popular CoverFlux plugin built using FxFactory that does an iTunes type fan display of pictures -the best part of it? it is completely free.

• IMac debate opinion wanted

Hello all..
I currently own a Mac Pro ( 1 year old 2.66 base model with 1 gig of ram ) and love it.. have had no problems at all with it..
I will soon be moving .. and may not have "room" for multiple monitors, the tower etc..
I do not do any gaming per say.. ( tiger woods golf occasionally) .. However I do a bit of drawing and rendering ( Carrera pro, Bryce, Photoshop, Poser )
I am debating trying to sell my Mac Pro / buying a iMac 24 inch and a MacBook Pro laptop ..
Will the new iMac hold up ok running these types of programs..?
I really like the how the iMac is compact and "tidy" ( and it really looks good too ) ..
are the graphics as good as the nvidia 7300gt in the Mac Pro ..? how does it compare etc..
I couldnt find out on the information page.. does the iMac have wifi ?
May sound like dumb questions.. but a considerable amount of money to spend.. so I thought I would ask you guys..
I would love to have a iMAc and a MacBook Pro .. and be completely wireless but I need to make sure that it is nearly as good as the Mac Pro for what I do..
other than what I mentioned I do not really do anything special with the computer..
input appreciated
thanks in advance..

Well for one your Mac Pro has more options for upgrade ability. It also has 4 cores compared to the iMac's 2 cores. With that said most standard applications may not benefit from the extra cores but I imagine the ones you mentioned using will. Overall I'd say the iMac should be able to handle those apps without any problems. The only one I have used personally though is Photoshop CS3. I'd say the Radeon 2600HD is at least on par with the 7300gt however I'd take the 7600gt over the 2600. Yes the iMac has wifi and bluetooth. My 2.8GHz is more than enough for what I do.
These speed test might help you to get a better idea: http://barefeats.com/imacal4.html
And if you do decide to get an iMac or MacBook Pro do yourself a favor get the base RAM configuration from Apple and get your RAM from OWC it's much cheaper.

• Wanting to Install Windows 7 on my MBP......

I've recently bought a copy of Windows 7 and I wanted to install on my MBP as there are some applications that I use for work that do not work on OSX. I opened the Boot Camp set up assistant and created a 32Gb partition on my 250Gb hard drive called Windows 7. Then as per instructions I inserted the 64bit version of the Windows 7 disk.
This is where I encountered issues. When I tried to install Windows 7 it said that my partition was not in the required NTFS format. Therefore I existed the process and tried to delete the Windows 7 partition that I have created, however it is not letting me do so.
When I now open the Boot Camp assistant, I get an error message stating 'the startup disk must be formatted as a single OS extended (journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows'.
Therefore I have the following questions:
1. How can I delete the 32Gb Windows 7 partition that I have created (I have tried via disk utility but to no avail).
2. How can I create a new partition in the required NTFS format for the Windows 7 installation (I do not believe that boot camp gave me this option, and it also only referred to Windows XP and Vista - no mention of Windows 7)
3. Are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of when installing Windows 7
Thanks in advance for all assistance.

Hi MacMiner,
while usually the correct way to remove your Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable. After the reboot use the BootCamp Assistant again to make the Windows partition and then install the (hopefully correct) version of Windows.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
After that's done successfully
8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
9) Quit Disk Utility
10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.
The BootCamp Installation Guide (to be found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ ) pages 8 to 10 shows you when to reformat the WIndows partition to NTFS.
Since OSX can not do this you have to do this during the Windows installation.
IMHO, no more pitfalls to be there...
Regards
Stefan
