Opinions and advice on pocket camera video please
Just bought a Flip UltraHD pocket camera. For the money pictures are great when used natively. But having converted the 720/30p pictures to 576/50i (using mpeg streamclip) to include in a PAL DV sequence I'm a bit disappointed by the loss of quality and motion artifacts that the conversion causes.
Does anyone have any experience of the Samsung U10 pocket camera which does 1080/50p and would presumably be better than the Flip when cut into DV PAL sequence ... wouldn't it?

That's an extreme conversion, you're throwing away tons of material during the scale and then trying to create fields from frames so, yes, of course it will look terrible. I'd be looking for more precise conversion applications instead of buying another camera.
You might want to investigate user forums for those rigs. You will find many more FLip owners who use Final Cut's tools there than you will find FCP users who have Flips here.
But search the forum for the them camera model, see what shows up.

Do you get sound on any apps e.g. Music and Videos but not others ? If you do then have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. I need to transfer all my photos and videos from my old PC stored in the SONY PMB program to my new fabulous MAC desktop. I do not know how I can do this. Plus for future photos/videos, how can I upload them from Sony products ?

When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Do you know where the actual photo files are located on your laptop? If so, you can transfer them to the Mac over a LAN or by saving them to an external HDD, thumb drive or burning them to a disk. Then you can import the photos to the iPhoto app that came on your new Mac.
It would be the same process for the videos, however, it would depend what type of video files they are, as to which Mac app might allow you to view them.
BTW, since your Mac is new you need to Accept the iLife apps; iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie into your Mac App Store/iTunes account. Open the MAS, sign into you account, go to the Purchased pane and accept the apps. -

Just got my TC here in the UK and would like some advice on setup please.
The ISP connection is downstairs in the house (Belkin Router) connected to an b/g/n Airport Extreme via ethernet which is currently serving a single wireless network to the whole house (including MacPro, MacBook Pro, iPhone, Wii, and PS3).
I would like to add the TC to this network and use this to share a printer and backup the Mac's. The printer is currently hooked up via USB to the MacPro and shared.
Any ideas on the best way to serve the household devices and get the best possible performance ??

The printer and the MacPro are upstairs which is not in the rHi Paul. Some of the answer depends on what kind of printer you have. For instance, if it is a USB printer that is fully supported for the Airport system, then hooking it up to the TC would be fine as additional wireless machines will be able to use it. Keep in mind that not all printers are fully compatible with this. You can trick some printers by using compatible drivers, but without knowing what printer it is... not sure.
If the printer is not in the way now, your best performance will come from having it directly connected to the Mac.
I could be wrong about this, but I believe you will also lose functionality of any scanning/copying/faxing you do if it is a multi-use printer. -
I coded my very first app and wanted some opinions and advices about it and about my website

I suppose the easiest way for your example would be to just get the part of the string to the right of the equal sign, but depending on exactly what you are doing expression parsing can get involved.
Website design is pretty much an art form, and I'm not really an artist (my website leans a bit more to the 'industrial' side, for example). There may be some pros here that could give a better opinion. -
Advice on buying camera for stills and high speed video
Hello video pros,
I'm a music composer who occasionally dallies with some simple photographic and video work. I'm looking for some advice re picking up a camera to make some simple videos, but with the highest quality I can get with consumer grade gear.
I am pretty much ruling out consumer grade camcorders for two reasons: One is that I want to be able to shoot high quality stills and make stop motion videos from very high res stills. The other is that I don't need audio recording at all because the video will always be just to accompany music - simple music videos basically. So I'm much more interested in the recent mid range point-and-shoot bridge cameras with full HD video modes rather than camcorders - they seem to cover more realistically the range of things I want to do.
My main question is regarding shooting at higher frame rates than 30 fps. I'd like to shoot video at a minimum of 60 fps (or higher) to then playback at 25 fps to get that smooth, slightly dreamy motion effect. There are a few cameras out there that offer high speed video modes, but most are nothing more than a gimmick because the res is so low that the resulting video is unusable. However a few cameras now seem to hit a sweet spot, offering 60 fps recording at HD res, and also 120 fps at 640x480 which (at a pinch) is usable, at least for stuff destined for simple web use.
The cameras I've narrowed it down to so far seem to be the Nikon Coolpix P500, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40 and possibly the Fujifilm HS20 EXR. I also was vaguely interested in the Casio Exilim HS cameras, but they seem to only offer high speed video modes that are pointless - 1000 fps at a completely useless low res, and 120 fps only at 640x480. The others I listed seem to offer at least 60 fps at some kind of HD res, so I'm assuming that with these cameras I could shoot decent looking video which would then play back with that slightly hyper real slow-mo effect when I import into FCP at 25 fps. Is this correct? Or is it the case that when they say HD video @ 60fps, it's some kind of interlaced mode which means you can't play back at a slower frame rate to get smooth slow motion?
The other thing I've noted is that all of these cameras do record HD video, but it's always compressed in H264 format. I understand that this puts a serious limitation on how much post-processing you can do to the video afterwards. Highly compressed video will begin to show image artefacts very quickly when you apply effects as opposed to higher quality (bigger file size) video compression. But I think I can live with that given that for the stuff I want to make, it will just be simply edited and only lightly graded. However, of the cameras I'm looking at, the Lumix also records in a format called AVCHD which (I think) does full HD at 17 Mbps. Does this mean that it's basic video quality is significantly better than the other choices? That said, from the specs it's unclear if it actually allows shooting at higher frame rates which you can slow down at playback.. the way it describes 60fps mode makes it sound like it's just interlacing so you don't actually get a higher number of images per second to then be able to play back at a lower frame rate. This for me might rule it out because I really want the creative effect of high speed video, even if it's only the subtle effect of 60 fps slowed down to 25.
So in summary, I'm looking for a camera capable of creative shooting (high quality stills to make stop motion videos, usable-quality HD video along with at least some degree of high speed video at a resolution that is still usable) to make interesting and artistic footage to accompany music. The destination medium is the web, so even though I'd like to get the best quality raw material to work with, the final destination is not exactly a cinema screen. As a pro in a related industry, I'm all too aware of the pointlessness of buying outlandishly over-specced gear that is far beyond your level of expertise. So I want to keep it simple and realistic, budget-wise, given the level I'm at. Nothing more than say $800 US. A seriously high end camera would be wasted on me, and I think it would be wiser to invest in useful accessories like a steadicam merlin and decent tripod rather than blow loads of cash on a camera far beyond my skill level.

I've been reading every review I can find at dpreview, and also am watching as many test video examples I can find on the internet, mostly on vimeo because the ones on youtube look pretty awful. I just am reaching out to get some actual experience and advice from people who might give me pointers on what to look out for.
As for 60fps not being fast enough, I know what you're saying. But for me, even 60 fps slowed down to 25 fps on playback is enough of an interesting effect, as long as the actual quality of the footage looks good to start off with. I like the subtle effect of slightly slower than real motion when it's real, bona-fide high frame rate slowed down. Artificially created slow-mo using plug ins looks cheesy to me, and the gimmicky super high frame rates of cameras like the casio exilim (where the resolution looks like a mobile phone video from ten years ago) are completely useless.
I've seen lots of examples on vimeo of stuff shot with DSLRs from Canon and Nikon at 60fps and then played back at 25 or 24, and it looks plenty nice enough for what I'm after. But am I kidding myself that I'd get anything near as nice with the price range I'm looking at? -
the camera app on my iphone 4S is crashing and while using the rear video cam black wavy lines are appearing but only when exposed to flurescent light in addition to the front cam... can any one please tell me what is happening???
Try resetting your phone by holding down the home and off button until the apple symbol comes up. Then if still doing, restore your phone in itunes from your backup.

If there is an indication of minimum specification in browser support, flash player plugin or other limits that have recently been changed, those should be available from Vimeo support.
The expectation of several things to be continued in an older OS X such as Leopard 10.5.8, has been showing its age and various browsers supporting that system online are fewer now. Safari has no upgrade version for this old of OS X. You may be able to use a different web browser to see if it would work.
There may be a later version of Flash that could work, or maybe not. A few browsers may do OK, I have a version of SeaMonkey (not the PPC version) in my MacBook1.1, running in Leopard 10.5.8. The last version of FireFox is no longer updated, but I have that too. The iCab browser (shareware) may do OK, you can test it since it runs freely w/o license.
For overall better web experience, you may need to look into the MacBook specifications and consider an upgrade to both the OS X system (buy/install retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD -- then download Combo Update 10.6.8 v1.1) and see if the computer can support more chip RAM installed. Of course if the hard disk drive is running full, make an external archive of your created content and a backup before considering upgrading the OS X and any applications.
With Snow Leopard 10.6.8, you have better browser support, newer Flash player plugin, and a few features that may be better for your overall experience with the MacBook. However it may ask for more resources than a basic Leopard 10.5.8 system, generally most reviews appear to be good. I have a MacBook1.1 (mid-2006) coreduo 1.83GHz model; it can run Snow Leopard 10.6.8 as a last upgrade & nothing further for mine.
While OS X 10.6.8 is a portal to attempt further OS X upgrades via Mac App Store, etc, the hardware of the early older MacBook may find better usefulness left at Snow Leopard. If you have several older applications written for PPC hardware (they run under Rosetta, an option in Snow Leopard no longer available after it) you may choose to keep the upgrade path at OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard even if there is a hint your MacBook could be upgraded to, say, Lion 10.7.5. You'd lose support for older applications not written to Universal or PPC.

Camera video preview - Random crashes and green screens

I am currently working on a Windows Phone 8.1 app and I need to preview video from the phone's back camera. For quite some time I've been struggling with random crashes and green screens. When these green screens appear, all camera apps become affected and
the device needs to be restarted. Occasionally the phone freezes and only recovers after battery removal. I test the app on my Lumia 620.

The crash/green screen only manifests itself when I suspend my app and switch to the default camera app (could be any other camera app perhaps). It happens roughly 1 out of 8 times. That's why I posted the suspension and resuming handlers, which I wrote
according to the msdn instructions.
I found
this page with a sample that demonstrates the MediaCapture API for Windows Phone. Some developers have reported problems similar as mine. Has Microsoft dealt with this issue?
I've spent quite a few weeks trying to investigate this problem, without actually knowing if it is my code that needs to be debugged. That's why I'm asking if other developers are facing similar problems.

Edit: It seems that the crash/green screen can appear when suspending/switching to any app (regardless if it uses the camera or not). Also, all works fine when the app is running on the debugger. -
I am trying to connect my JVC Hard Disk Drive Camcorder to my IPAD 2 via the Apple camera kit. I am able to download photos, but video files not showing. Camera shows Mass Stoarge. How can I download videos please?
The file name only has 6 characters and I'm not sure what the .mod format is. So that's why they are not seen by the iPad.
Another way to transfer. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
