Opinions before I buy MBP

I have a 900 G3 iBook and it runs fine, but I feel it 's time to "move on up" to a 13" MBP. Of course the choice between the two (2.26 and 2.53) has been beat to death but here it goes again. If I was to purchase the 2.26 MBP I would upgrade the memory and probably the hard drive ( approx. 165.00 incl shipping and me doing the install).
Although I've been fine with the 40gig in the iBook.
That would bring the two books closer in specs, except of course the processor bump which is around 10%. so the real price difference comes down to about 135.00 for the faster 2.53 MBP. I was talking to one of the salesmen at the apple store and he kept bringing up the fact that apple would not honor warrantees if the customer installed parts were faulty or if they caused other parts to to bad. it seemed that apple would look for a reason not to cover a problem if they could get away with it. I'm tempted to spend the additional 135.00 and get the 2.53 MBP for the convenience of having everything already in place and no excuses from apple. Any ideas?

Migration from the old iBook to the MacBook Pro will possibly require a piecemeal migration, and won't work with the Migration Assistant:

Furthermore, the 2.6 Ghz MacBook Pro and faster do offer an added advantage over the slower MacBook Pro and MacBook, and that's an all chip GPU. This means it is more compatible with many more games. The pre-WWDC 15" MacBook Pros all had all chip GPUs.
If you use Classic, or booting into Mac OS 9, moving to the MacBook or MacBook Pro will require kissing those goodbye on the MacBook and MacBook Pro as neither works with them.
There may also be a few Mac OS X compatible drivers that are not universal that don't work with the MacBook or MacBook Pro, so verify all your printers, scanners, etc... have Universal drivers, and plugins for software that you use do too. A few games may not work with Rosetta either. Verify there isn't a Universal update patch for them as well.
The MacBook Pro 17" has an additional advantage and that is Express/34 compatibility. The older 15" MacBook Pro than the WWDC 2009 offers that slot too. The 15" and 13" MacBook Pro offer an SD slot, which is great for flash storage swapping between Macs with USB-SD adapters as well as Express/34 SD adapters, and digital camera card compatibility without USB, if your digital camera supports SD. Express/34 offers external SATA hard drive compatibility via third party addon card, as well as separate Firewire bus compatibility via third party addon card if you do a lot of video capturing.
AppleCare as stated basically is a warranty program, it is not insurance. So be careful with your machine. If it is apparent there is a manufacturer defect, then use it. You also have free 90 day phone calls on Apple software questions, which you can extend to 3 years from date of computer's purchase with the purchase of AppleCare anytime in the first year of ownership (don't wait till the last minute).

  • MacBook Pro....things you need to know before you buy!!!

Helpful hints before you buy your MacBook Pro 15 or 17 inch:
    1. New MacBook Pro...does not have a firewire 400 port!!. If you have to transfer data from an old (2 years old) MacBook Pro to new one...need a 800 firewire cable or a 400 to 800 cable!!
    2. New MacBook Pro with HD Cinema 30 inch. The two items are not compatible unless you purchase the $99 Dual (not single), I repeat Dual..."Mini Display Port to Dual-Link adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MTA4NDU1NDM
The reason I am posting this is that I bought a MacBook Pro 15 inch on Monday and I specifically told the Apple people at the store what I had: 2 year old MacBook Pro and Cinema HD and what I would need and they sold me the mini single adapter. Nothing worked. Went to the store 3 times and no one could help me. Finally a guy from Australia, on this forum, was able to answer my call for help!!! I actually had to take his email into the store and show it to the Apple folk and they finally got me the correct adapter. Today is Friday, 4 days later and I am finally able to work on a project that has been on hold while I figured out something fairly simple...so much for these "Apple genius people." Just think the problems I would have had if I had an older Mac laptop or a PC laptop?!?@!

    Hi kleeks,
Glad you got it sorted in the end!
To be fair, most of the Genius bar people are very good and your experience was probably not typical, but it is also worth remembering that some of us here have been using Macs since before some of the Geniuses were even born, so we often know a thing or two that they may not have cottoned on to yet! When in doubt, a second opinion here can often be well worth obtaining.
Really glad you have it running as it should now.
    Cheers
    Rod (the "guy from Australia")

  • Mac Air and Apple TV, before I buy question

    Hello,
This is a before I buy Apple TV question.
    1. Can I control iTunes and movies in my Mac Air to view on my Samsung TV which will have Apple TV connected to it? In other words, I want to sometimes be able to "DJ" my music or launch movies directly out of the Mac Air (I just want to know if I can do it)
    2. When using Apple TV via its remote  on my Samsung TV, can Apple TV see my iTunes Match/cloud and play it? (on the Samsung TV) Or does Apple TV only play music or movies stored in my Mac Air?
    Thank you
    S

    1. You can always mirror your mac on your TV using AirPlay (sound and video).
You can also directly use you Apple TV to play music stored on your mac.
Both solutions works. I personnaly prefer to stream music and movies from my Ipad/mac to my Apple TV, I do it all the time.
    2. Hum, I dont use itunes match, I couldnt tell.

this morning I ask to a sales person about the requirement to download the adobe Creative Cs6 before i buy the product and the salesperson told me that my computer met the requirement for that particular software, so my surprise now when i open the file it says an error because my computer doesn't meet this requirement,  my computer is a OS X 10.5.8 and the requirement  is OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7 what can i do?

The requirements are online. For the Master Collection the requirements on Macs are:

  • How do I determine if my file system is case-sensitive before I buy Photoshop CS5?

How do I determine if my file system is case-sensitive before I buy Photoshop CS5? I currently have Mac OSX 10.5.8 with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 4GB of Memory.. Adobe says the following requirements are needed..
2GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM
Some GPU-accelerated features require graphics support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0
I don't know if I have a "hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card" or "256MB or VRAM".. I've never heard of "VRAM" before and the last bullet points is just as confusing. The last thing I want to do is buy this program and discover my Mac Book is just a tad bit to old for it, I've already done that once with a video game.

Disk Utility highlighting the drive or partition & clicking the blue Info icon may report it, but since I don't have Case Sensitive I can't tell for sure.
A simple test would be to save a small txt doc as...
    test
Then save to the place same as...
    TEST
If both show on the Disk, then it is, if it asks to replace test with TEST then it isn't.

Hi, I would verify the compatibility between the Air TV and the Panasonic TX-L55DT60E LED 3D ?
Is it OK before I buy ?

It has HDMI so should be just fine, be sure to turn off any silly motion settings the TV offers.

  • Try before you buy?

I'm not currently an ATT customer. The ATT website shows good coverage in my area. However, I want to be sure I'll get reception at home and work. Is it possible to purchase an iPhone and ATT plan, try it for a few days and fully refund everything if reception for some reason isn't good at either location?
Is it better to buy everything at the Apple Store, ATT Store or do I buy the iPhone at the Apple Store then just activate at home through iTunes?

You might, before you buy an iPhone, talk to AT&T about whether they could set up you with a phone (not an iPhone, but another type of GSM phone) that could be returned to them for a complete refund, one with which you could test the coverage first. Then if the coverage works, you could return the first phone and buy an iPhone. I don't know for sure if they would have a policy that would work like that, but it's probably worth talking to them about. Might save you the restocking fee.

  • Hear before you buy

This has probably been asked before... I find the sample you hear inadequate. Is there a way to hear the entire song before you buy? If not, what other legal services do this?

Is there a way to hear the entire song before you buy?
    No.
If not, what other legal services do this?
None I know of except for subscription services (i.e. you pay a monthly fee for access to all the tracks) or some independent sites that trust the users to pay.

  • Discharges as a trial version of aperture, like the try before you buy?

discharges as a trial version of aperture, like the try before you buy?

Apple discontinued the formal trial; if there's a store nearby which sells Macs, it may be installed on a display model.

my screen is broke and can't type my passcode in. plus i never plugged my phone into my computer. how can i backup my phone so i keep all my information before i buy a new phone?

It's too late for that. Maybe you should consider setting up your next iPhone to backup to iCloud... it happens automatically without user intervention once it's set up. All that's required is a power source for the phone and a WiFi internet connection.
