Opinions Needed : Wattage for Power Supple Upgrade

Hey there BBY Forum users!
I'm looking to chunk some change out for a PSU upgrade and wanted some outside opinions as to how high of wattage I should really look for(I have my own ideas).
Here's all the hardware currently in the system:
Antec 1200 case: 6x120mm LED case fans, 1x200mm LED exhaust fan
Hard Drives : 2x320GB 7200RPM, 2x1TB 7200RPM(All SATA)
CPU : Intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz
Graphics : PNY GeForce GTS 470
Cooling : Corsair H50 Watercooler
Opticals : LG BluRay ROM, Sony DVD RW(both SATA)
RAM : 6GB(3x2GB) DDR3 1333
Extras : Couple external HDD's, cam, printer, etc, and a cold cathode tube.
I currently have a 700 watt RocketFish, which, nothing against them, just isn't high end enough for my taste.
I've been leaning towards a 900W or a 1kW PSU, but need some outside advice on brand/type.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

I see one problem with 'future proofing' as you call it. By the time you need 1000 watts, the power supply could be two or three years old. At that time, the components used to build a power supply will have improved two fold.  They will be more efficient and most likely cheaper. Any benefit realized now, will be lost by then.  And who knows, in two years, system boards maybe running on a 3 volt and 5 volt bus. 12 volt is only needed in drives and soon they may all be running on 5 volts.

    Hello,
I need to upgrade Unity 4.0.5 without failover to Unity 8, and we are replacing the server as well.
What would be the most efficient upgrade path for this?
    Thanks!!

    Brian,
The most efficient path is to use COBRAS.  I have a number of posts explaining the overall process.  At the highest-level, this allows you to build out the new Unity 8x environment, get it integrated with AD/Exchange, and then build out configurations that don't migrate over (there are a few which are highlighted in the COBRAS help).  From there, you migrate data over from the 4x system.  There may or may not be a few steps along the way but they are outlined in numerous posts I've contributed to regarding COBRAS and also in the COBRAS Help which is located at www.ciscounitytools.com.

  • I need advice for a CPU upgrade...please and thank you!!!

Hi, I own a lenovo3000 n100 076804U, with a T2060. I am thinking of upgrading to windows 7 and going 64 bit. Can anyone tell me what processor I might jump up to that will work in this system? I know very little about laptops but I build my own desktops. This is for travel and I don't use it much, so buying a new laptop isn't really what I want to do. But I would like all of my systems to run the same OS. Thanks for your help.

I have the same model, and just put in a T5600 which
I purchased on eBay. Works Great, and windows 7
is a joy to use compared to vista.
The only driver I had to install was for the card reader.

I strongly recommend OWC. Not only do they have excellent prices, but their parts are high quality and all guaranteed to work with mac products. Also, they have excellent videos to install any component.
I've ordered from them dozens of times in the past and they are simply the best in all aspects of the sale:

  • N5k power seq upgrade

    Hi guys,
As part of the N5k upgrade process, the system outputs the info below:
Module 1: Refreshing compact flash and upgrading bios/loader/bootrom/power-seq.
Warning: please do not remove or power off the module at this time.
Note: Power-seq upgrade needs a power-cycle to take into effect.
On success of power-seq upgrade, SWITCH OFF THE POWER to the system and then, power it up.
Note: Micro-controller upgrade needs a power-cycle to take into effect.
On success of micro-controller upgrade, SWITCH OFF THE POWER to the system and then, power it up.
after the switch reboot itself as part of the upgrade, I can see that the power-seq is already up on the new version in "Show version",  Do you really need to cut the switch power completely and then power it back up?? that means the switch will reboot twice and which is twice the outage to the connecting device (assume they are single homed to one N5k).
I have been doing the power cycle for all my previous upgrades, but is power cycle really necessary?
    cheers
    ming

    Hi,
This will depend upon the release that your upgrading from. Once you've upgraded to either NX-OS version 4.2(1)N1(1) or 5.0(2)N1(1) and above, and completed the power cycle, then the power sequencer will be the correct level. Any subsequent NX-OS upgrades will not require the power cycle.
    As per the release notes:
If the switch is upgraded to the Cisco NX-OS 4.2(1)N1(1) release, but is not power-cycled as the procedure instructs, the switch will have instructions for power sequencer upgrade, but the power sequencer will not actually be upgraded. The show version will indicate a v1.2 power sequencer, but that only indicates the power sequencer upgrade instructions have been programmed. Therefore, if the switch admin cannot confirm the power off/on of the switch, it is advisable to perform a power off/on to ensure the power sequencer is actually upgraded.

  • POWER SUPPLY info needed for GRAPHICS CARD UPGRADE!!!

I have a HP PAVILION p6631p and ide like to add a graphics card, but I was told I had to upgrade my power supply.
The card I purchased is the SAPPHIRE RADEON R7 260X 2GB and I was told I need a 500watt or higher power supply.
I was looking at the CORSAIR BRAND power supplies and tried emailing them to help me find the right power supply, but they said they needed to know what type of power supplies HP use in this model PC.
I didnt know what to do so im hoping someone can help me out with this information CORSAIR is asking for so they can help select me the right power supply for my PC.
I been searching for answers for weeks. Hopefully someone can help. Thanks.

    KJonline, welcome to the forum.
You were told correctly.  You will have to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU) for the video card to work properly.
The PSU in the computer is a standard ATX.  I suggest measuring the existing PSU and comparing the measurements to the one you choose.
I normally suggest at least 500W, but 600W is better for future upgrades.  Here is a PSU that should work for you. It is 650W and is an Enthusiast series.  This means that it has all of the power that you will need.  It is 5.9" (W) x  3.4" (H) x 6.3" (L).

  • I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed. How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or better?

I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed (and am given no option for updating my OS). How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or newer?

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to OSX 10.5 or the .11 added to OSX 10.4..
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was written for Power PC Macs with code added to force it to run on Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion ($19.99) used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion ($19.99) is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
10.9 Mavericks is pure 64 bit and is a free download from the App store.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks which are downloads only.
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.

  • Need help with power supply & graphics card upgrades

I have a HP Pavilion p6320y that I bought 8 months ago. AMD Phenom II x4820 Quad Core processor.   I play WoW and since the last big patch, have been suffering with low fps. I updated drivers and followed all the advice given to me by Blizz and finally figured out that my Nvidia GeForce 9100 (integrated graphics) isn't good enough anymore.
I checked my computer and discovered that I have a 300w power supply (12V) and read on another post here that something stronger than 300w is needed to run a decent graphics card.
    Now for my questions:
How much of a power supply can I upgrade to without hurting my computer, but will be enough to run a good card?
What would be a good graphics card for this computer?
I've been looking at the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express graphics card and wonder if that will work on my computer.  Most of the nicer cards seem to be the PCI Express and I'm not sure if that will work.
Any advice will be most helpful. I have some experience with the inner workings of my PC and would like to fix this myself instead of running to the closest computer shop and paying someone else to. Thanks!
    This question was solved.

Well, you are starting out from a fairly low baseline with the integrated graphics. It will not cost much to have a substantial increase if all you want to do is run WoW without error messages. Yes, the 300w power supply is an issue and rules out any card that will require its own power (i.e. needs its own power cord like a hard drive) but there are several mid-grade cards that can run off bus power alone (i.e. just from the pci-e slot itself). Just taking a quick look at newegg.com I see the following:
    GeForce 9400 under $50
    Radeon HD 4650 under $50
    GeForce 9500GT a little over $50
Any of these should get you where you want to be and not require a PS upgrade. The slot you have available is a PCI Express x16 slot so don't look at AGP cards; they will not work. If you want to install the card you mention you need to get a better PSU.

  • I would like to upgrade my OS to the latest version.  I now have 10.6.8 and my machine has 1Gb of memory.  Need 2Gb for the new OS.  Is is possible (and practical) to add memory to a machine that's five years old?

You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/faq/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-3-g b-memory-limitation-details.html
OWC tests have found that there is a slight speed increase with having two 2gb sticks in rather than one 1gb and one 2gb. Your model is in the gray lines at the bottom of the graph. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_Benchmark/Apple_MacBook/
You can buy Lion for $29 from the App Store witht a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. As for programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.
These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/ - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model
Data Memory Systems http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple-memory.asp - another good, cheap place to buying RAM if you live in the U.S.
Here are instructions on replacing RAM in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://homeoffice.consumerelectronicsnet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=44404

  • Unable to simultaneously ramp up Kepco power supplies(5v,12v) w/ diff ramp rate for each.

Need to ramp up the two power supplies(5v&12v) at exact same time using different ramp rate for each power supply. Tried to use two NI-DAQ cards for each Kepco power supply. Unable to ramp up both voltages at exact same time. There is always approx. 5+ms delay between two power supply. Any suggestions??

You can use one DAQ card with two output to control both power supplies. When you use the analog output, you must provide an array of samples which contain your ramp function. You then output each sample of the array at a specific update rate. If you want to use the same card, you just need have different data arrays for each channel. One ramp with be steeper than the other, but the points with be output at the same rate.

  • Need new low-end graphics card for Power Mac G5 (PowerPC 970)

My Power Mac G5 (PowerPC 970) has recently died I believe due to a bad
ATI RADEON X800 XT MAC EDITION video card.
Reason for thinking its the card, is that the machine was performing its intended tasks for several days even though the monitor was snow.
Having trouble determining a low-end replacement. (I no longer need the enhanced features of the RADEON X800 for this machine.
Much appreciated if someone could suggest a product appropriate for PowerPC 970.
    Thanks!

I also ran into this issue with my dual G5. When I bought it, I didn't get wireless because it was a dedicated desktop on the network, but I'm upgrading and giving it to the kids to use in a room without wired network. Now that wireless would be really nice and it looks like the official solution is:
"Apple Wireless Upgrade Kit for Power Mac G5 Dual or Power Mac G5 Quad MA252G/A"
which is really expensive and difficult to install. But the weird thing is that I do have bluetooth. I wonder if there's just some little doodad I need to connect to get wireless going too, but I can't find any info on the card, and it looks like it's buried on the motherboard behind all the cooling stuff. I'll probably just spring for one of the USB solutions.

    Hello,
    As far as Browsers...
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.
