Opinions on Optimal After Effects Computer Build?

Hello all,
Curious to know thoughts on an optimal AE computer build and taking into considering that 3rd party plugins would be used (Red Giant, Boris, Sapphire.)  I'm interested in hearing thoughts on Xeon or dual Xeon vs i7.  Quadro/Firepro -vs- a top gaming card. And what system would overall get the best results from real time processing to rendering. I would also love to hear some opinions on your current build and how it's working out for you?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Dual Xeon>i7>single Xeon (assuming you have plenty of RAM).
Gaming card is fine for most folks in AE, but it only applies to third-party plugins that use the GPU (Red Giant Universe, Element 3d, etc.) - stock AE barely uses the GPU at all (barring one, obsolete feature - the ray-traced renderer): GPU (CUDA, OpenGL) features in After Effects Now, it does matter for Premiere and it might matter if, for example, you plan to do a lot of C4D work using the Octane renderer.
This page might help some: FAQ: What computer and components should I buy?
I also found this recorded live event useful to watch: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?event=set_registered&id=2490687&loc=en_us In it, Adobe folks from the AE and Premiere teams talk about how the two programs use system resources.
Now, in all of this, keep in mind that there are some major updates in the works in how AE works. The majority of the After Effects team is working on improving the interactivity and render speed of AE. The team has gone on record as saying that it will eventually be able to take more advantage of multi-core systems.
One big difficulty in offering suggestions and comparing computing power is that every project is different. So if everyone had a benchmark project to compare with, it might not help you at all because your workflow might not use what's in the benchmark. For example, having hundreds of layers in a comp including several different layers of MP4 footage, some Cineform footage, and some PNG sequences is going to require different system resources than a project using lots of 3d solids, Particular, depth of field, and motion blur.
And it's odd, but sometimes having a screaming fast processor doesn't do much good because the RAM is the bottleneck, or the system bus, or the hard drive...
General, sum-up advice: fastest core speed you can afford with as many processor cores as you can get (so long as you've got about 4GB of RAM per core). An SSD for your cache is good too. GPU would be dependent on the recommendations of the third-party plugin developers.

  • Optimizing After Effects Performance/ Rendering Speed for large projects

    Problem:
My after effects is extremely slow and i want to use an external harddrive  to increase the speed temporarily until i can afford to change the internal hard drive. i also have other video production software like Cinema 4D, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Cheetah 3D, etc.
Macbook pro with the following specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB (Available space approx 91.GB)
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Action:
i have set my Disk Cache to use the 500GB Gtech firewire external hardrive in After Effects Preferences
    Issue: After effects still slow
Recommendation From expert: Change Internal Hard Drive to 512 GB SSD HARD DRIVE
Question: How can i optimize After effects with the current hard drive space i have right now?

Thank you. As i stated earlier i am new to after effects and video editing in general so this is a learning process for me. i have also realized that i have soo much going in the layer that i need to clean up and prerender as you said. Also one of the biggest mistake i am making is with the "composed individual lyric effect" i created. As i said earlier, i masked the lyrics to audio spectrum and choose the mp3 song in other to make the effect active, but since i am working on the lyric composition individually i did not crop the yellow bar in the workframe to the exact part of the lyric that applies to the song. hence leaving me with 100+ of words with each having the full length of the song in each individual composition i created in the master layer, in addition to the spin fx effect that i have not prerendered. After effects is trying to render alll these together basically. The extremely slow rendering procesing time arose  when i combined all individual lyric effect into the layer while also implementing typography tricks like in the same layer.
Basically, my question is should i reduce the frame work in each lyric composition to the exact section of the song that applies, and will this improve the overall rendering time in the master layer and solve my problem?
Also should i peform my typography skill like position, scaling rotation and so on in the individual layer/composition of the lyric effect i made in order to further save rendering time in the master layer?

  • After effects 5.5 crashing on previous work

    Hello
I have had this problem for about 2 weeks now and I think i have tried every 'fix' i can find on the internet.
i'll talk you through what i do and what happens...
    I load up after effects
I open a previous project that i created on the same after effects on the same computer about 3 weeks ago.
Sometimes the file opens but the moment i move anything it crashes, no error message. just 'not responding' and i have to task manager and end the program to close it.
Other times i can manage to click the add to render queue and i can even change the settings, but i have literally tried every setting about 5 times each.
The program still crashes. its not just this file, 2 days ago i accepted that it wouldnt work and i decided to try making a new scene (not using the same footage).. half way through, i scrub the ram preview and it crashes again.
My computer cost me £1000 (approx) i added another 8gb (12 total) of ram and put in an nvidia card... i did all of this at the start of septeber and i did it for the sole purpose of using after effects to build up my portfolio... but now its been a massive waste unless someone has a solution!
any questions, feel free to ask, and all advice will be taken on board and i will be very greatful!
    Thanks
    Matt

i have tried the openGL thing, how do i sort out my graphics card config? im not exactly an exert on all this! haha.
should i trash all the prefs?
    cheers
    Matt

  • After Effects will RAM Preview not in real time

Hi, we have 3 adobe After Effects CC up to date here, we are working on a 60fps project in HD 1080. Nothing crazy.
We have 20 Gigas of ram. Mac OS 10.8.5 octo core 2011. ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 Mo. SSD disque crucial m500 256 gigas.
We have a lot of problem with Ram Preview. (on every project)
Everything works fine until, we don't know why, the ram preview is getting not realtime, like 30fps or under.
Sometimes purge memory do the trick but not always.
We need to reboot and it works again, but few minutes.
We made a test on CS5 and it works well realtime, but same problem on CS6.
I tried to delete all the preferences to check but no difference.
We are working with nfs network account but i always redirect disk cache to local disk (set to 20 gigas) and also media conformed cache (database and cache)
We are getting mad, it's really hard to work that way, rebooting each time.
Maybe an issue with Global performance cache introduced in CS6 ?
It's not a footage/project issue because the entire project (a blend of tiff, png, prores422) can be played 120 frames/sec without any problem on after CS5, after CS6 (when it works), CC (when it works).
The problem is when working on project, changing layers, adding effects, After CC starts not be slow and not realtime using Ram Preview.
Also, when we are previewing, a lot of ram is not used, it only uses like 20% of the ram.
We hope for a nice patch very soon ....

60 fps is a very high frame rate not usually supported. If your footage is shot at 60i then it is probably 29.97 fps when converted to progressive video. If the footage is actually 60 fps then you will be better off, and by better off I mean more folks and streaming services will be able to view your video at the proper speed.
So my recommendation is to first determine your audience and then set up your comp appropriately. In all my years in the business I have only delivered one high frame rate project and that was 48 fps.
The other thing I would recommend is to optimize your system for AE. That does not necessarily mean throw all your available ram and processors at the app. There are some good recommendations here: Optimizing After Effects Performance

  • A Headache of a problem! After Effects to DVDSP

    Hello to every one!
I am having a heck of a time trying to figure this out. I will try and sum this up as best as I can
The goal of the project is - To create a motion menu in After Effects, export and bring into DVD Studio Pro and add buttons for the video. Thats pretty much it.
The Problem I am having - Once I export the menu it looks great, but once I bring it into DVDSP it losses so much quality that I cant use it. I get horrible interlacing, looks like its vertical if anything. Im ages goes very soft and block.
I made the menu in After Effects using the the - NTSC D1 Widescreen SQ Pixels. After doing some reading I was seeing that even if I want it to be a 16:9 Menu It still needs to be made in the 720x480 Dimensions. So I set my comp to NTSC DV Widescreen 720x480 with the Pixel Aspect Ratio to D1/DV Widescreen 1.21.
This did not help at all. But to try anything I could think of I imported the new file with the new settings into Motion and exported it out of there with the default NTSC settings and brought it in to DVDSP and it look good! just a little soft. I though I was in the clear but after I burned the DVD and popped it into a player it looked a little better then the first time I burned but still has all the interlacing problems.
Can any one help me out here? Am I missing something as far as to witch setting I should Set After Effects before I make a menu? Im lost here and have been dealing with this for 4 days
Alslo about Pixel Aspect Ratio Why dose After Effects use .90 and 1.21 but Motion or DVDSP use .90 or 1.20?

I hope some one can add to this... Dose no one use After Effects to build motion menus?
I got a little farther in my problem, I took my comps that are made in NTSC D1 Widescreen SQ Pixels
when doing the final render I selected the Stretch under render Que. and selected the NTSC DV Wide Screen preset. This set the video to 720x480 looking squeezed. Once I imported into DVD Studio Pro, DVDSP un-squeezed the footage and it fit like a 16x9 menu should. However the image still looked bad. I still had the tearing problems and jaggy lines every where. Once again I took the file and brought it into Motion used the NTSC DV preset. Loaded it in and just exported it out and brought back into DVDSP. It looks good no jaggy lines or anything, a little soft though. however when I burn the DVD I still get artifacts around some graphics. (little blocks)
I don't understand why the extra step to Motion makes the file look better in DVDSP?
I also don't understand how there is no information on the web about using After Effects with DVDSP.

  • Dissolves made in Premiere CS4 lost in "bridge" to After Effects

I have a number of video dissolves in my Premiere CS4 video.  I click on (forget the exact command since I am not in front of my After Effects computer) "replace with After Effects composition"
In after effects I see the dissolves are gone.
What is the best work flow to ensure the dissolves are retained.
    Note:  This is HDV footage.
Here is one thing I tried to do unsuccessfully:
When the replace with After Effects composition lost the dissolves, I tried just exporting the video.  I tried doing a quicktime export, but Premiere did not allow me to do a high quality HDV export.  The video was pixilated, etc.  (In After Effects I could choose Quicktime / Animation /Millions of colors" but I don't see that exact option (millions of colors or millions of colors PLUS) in the Premiere export dialogue.
I see two AVI export options.  Windows AVI and Uncompressed AVI -- would that be a better choice than quicktime?
    I have a windows pc.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Rowby:
It's a bit confusing, but it's there. If in the Adobe Media Encoder dialog you get in Premiere Pro, you pick Quicktime as the Format, Animation as the codec and then set codec settings to "32 bit", it will render RGB+Alpha. Even if it doesn't state that clearly.
If you have Premiere Pro and After Effects as part of Production Premium, you can just drag the Premiere Pro sequence from PPro's project panel to AE's project panel, and this will show as a clip/layer in AE which is dynamically linked to the Premiere Pro sequence - any changes you perform in PPro are updated automatically in AE. No need to export a video file at all. But again, this doesn't work if you got PPro and AE as individual products.

  • Advice for building computer for Adobe CC, mostly After Effects

I am upgrading to a new computer.  I mostly work in After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator.  Some work in Premiere. Also using Zaxwerks ProAnimator for 3D.
My first and main concern is about drives.  I am going with SSD's.
Will there be a significant enough performance difference between SATA and SAS?
with using SSD's is there a need to have separate drives for cache, source files, rendered files or will the read/write be ok using just one drive?
Other than that, does anyone see any issues with the following system I'm planning to purchase? NOTE - no need for raid for secondary drives.  We have source files on server and I pull them down as needed.

  • Adobe After Effects & Illustrator are incredibly slow on a fast computer :S

In serious need of a computer genius. I have a computer that should have a great performance although till now it's acting frustratingy slow with the Adobe Programs. I have the legal Adobe Creative Cloud. I mainly use Illustrator and After Effects and that is where I noticed the problems.
Illustrator: slows down over time. Over a period of half an hour the program gets extremely slow and laggy (happens with every project).
After Effects: Is really slow with rendering. Also RAM render goes extremely slow even with very very simple projects. (even a shape layer that only moves from the left to the right is RAM rendering frame per frame and takes half a second to render every frame -_-).

  • Adobe After Effects CS6 - how to uninstall/reinstall or transfer license to a new computer

My old computer has crashed, and so I built a new one recently. I have been installing all the applications for it, downloading files, so on and so forth. I recently insterted one of the hardrives from my old computer, and was able to see the files I had from my old computer. All of my adobe applications are on there, and I can see them, however; I cannot use them, which is okay, since most of them were free applications that I could download from the website. But Adobe After Effects CS6, which is the application I really need, does not open it; instead, it reads: "Configuration Error: Please uninstall and reinstall the product. Error: 16". I bought the CD for After Effects last summer, but I cannot find it anywhere. I heard you don't need the CD to transfer the license to a new computer, but I can't figure out how to do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since after building my computer, I have absolutely no funds nor interest to buy another After Effects CD.
    Thanks,

  • Gateway computer not able to activate opengl in after effects?

i got a gateway computer (bad, bad idea..) and it came with an "ATI Radion HD 4650" with 1GB of VRAM, an AMD Phenom quad 9750, 8GB of DDR2 RAM, yet after effects won't let me use my card to render in opengl, i have the latest opengl drivers, and the latest drivers gateway has published (the normal drivers can't finish installing because of something im sure gateway is behind), on PS it wouldnt allow it either, but i did the registry hack, and it runs fine on there now, but i kinda want it for after effects so i can do a faster render than 10 minutes for 10 seconds of preview

but it should be a one-time render, then just composites, right?
Sure, AE will only read the frame from the source file once, but if the comp is used 30 times, 30 individual comp buffers need to be calculated, possibly involving complex blending operations with other layers or the footage itself if used as nested comp. Furthermore, since you mention 100fps, there may be temporal operations involved when time-stretching/ time-remapping, resulting in look-up of multiple source frames per any single comp frame which for all intents and purposes can take a while, especially with compressed sources that require to decode larger parts since they are GOP based. Could be perfectly normal, if you ask me, but there may be room to improve performance by checking your comps and optimizing things here and there.

  • Computer CONSTANTLY restarts while editing with premiere and after effects

Whenever i edit in premiere or after effects, my computer will always just randomly restart.  It normally does it more in after effects than premiere, but lately, it has been doing it a lot in premiere, sometimes as much as every 15 minutes.    Here are my specs:

  • Computer for After Effects

Hello! i want to build one computer where I am going to use mostly After Effects and Premiere. Can somebody tell me what would be a good computer for it? not just the minimal nor something exaggerated, but something that will respond me very good when i do my videos. Thanks

My $1000 personal computer - Quadcore cpu (2.4), quadcore mobo, 2x2gb ram, 20x SATA dvd burner, ATI 2600 512mb, case w/ 450 power supply, 2x500gb WD sata HD, Acer 24" monitor.
Next Xmas, I'm hoping to get another 2x2gb ram, new videocard, Vista64.
Have you built a computer before? It's safer if you buy retail; I had bluescreen issues which my brother finally resolved for me. Computer runs perfect now though. Amazed that the computer only cost $700 and the monitor was $300 (including CA sales tax).

  • FAQ: What computer and components should I buy for Premiere Pro or After Effects?

See this page for the official minimum system requirements for Premiere Pro.
See this page for the official minimum system requirements for After Effects.
Note that the minimum system requirements are just that: a minimum to run the software. You will need components that exceed the minimum system requirements to achieve satisfactory performance in many cases.

    As David and Hal said
One thing to consider is that you may also want SATA capability (which you can do with G5 towers easily, the dual cores have cards available or will shortly) and also shortly (fingers cross) for the MacBooks (there are cards for PowerBooks.)
The only possible fly in the ointment is if you are going to hold onto these computers for awhile, with the Intel Chips the non-Intels will eventually have less support and software. Though for the short term (particularly if you are relying on non-Intel native apps and need peak performance) the Quad G5s are great.

  • $10,000 - $15,000 Premiere/After Effects Build Recommendations

    Hello,
If you were to build a computer for HD editing between $10,000 to $15,000, what do you guys recommend?
    Requirements for the system:
The computer needs to burn Blu-Ray discs. It also needs to be compatible with Blackmagic Multibridge. The system needs to be capable of running CS5 software, including AE and Premiere.
We have space for a full-size tower. We were considering this tower: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112159 but are open to other cases.
Storage. Preference is speed/reliability over total storage space. We are open to using external storage enclosures, but would prefer that some of the drives remain inside the computer case.
If you have any other questions please ask. The system will be used in a production environment.
    Joshua

From the After Effects side, I say to get an 8-core system, which with hyperthreading is 16 processors. At 4GB per processor, that's 64GB of RAM. And you certainly want to have at least two fast local hard disk drives.
I'll leave it to the Prmeiere Pro folks to throw in what they'd recommend for the Premiere Pro side. But for After Effects, the mantra is RAM, CPUs, and fast disks.
