Opinions on PowerBook G4 running 10.5, compared to 10.4

Hi,
I use a PowerBook G4 1.7GHz, currently 10.4.11, 1.5GB RAM. I push this machine pretty hard in Eclipse (Java) and also heavy Firefox use. I'm wondering if I'll get a bit more zip out of it by upgrading to 10.5. Can anyone who's made the transition comment on whether this might be advisable?
--Toby

I was holding off upgrading to 10.5 on my PowerBook G4 17" with 2GB ram. I finally did it yesterday and am very pleased. I was afraid 10.5 would run slower than 10.4 and that some of my applications would not work.
I did an archive and install upgrade and the upgrade took several hours but once it was over, and I did all the other upgrades to 10.5.4 I am very pleased. Safari and Mail run much better an in 10.4.
The one part of installing 10.5 which takes a very long time is at the end when the installer says it has about a minute left. From other installs, I knew that this took a long time and it really does. I didn't time it but it seemed like an hour or so for that last minute to finish.
Before doing the upgrade I did make two backups onto two different external drives so that I could easily restore my PowerBook if I had to. After using 10.5 for two days it's working great.

  • Need a webcam for PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11 -- help!!!

Hi - i am looking for a webcam for my PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. No Apple service center or other computer store in India has any idea of what camera could work. Logitech sells the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, but that is too expensive for me. The ones I liked (from Logitech) are the Webcam C200/C250M/C500/C600 and the QuickCam for Notebooks - though I don't know if any of these is compatible with my G4.
Any suggestions? I'm open to suppliers other than Logitech, as long as it does not cost more than $60.
Please help me ASAP - thanks in advance

I have a PowerBook G4 running OSX 10.5.8. What problems am I going to encounter with Cloud?

I think you're out of luck with PPC & 10.5, or in luck by my view of iCloud.
Some features of iCloud require iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac computer with OS X Lion or a PC with Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Outlook 2007 or 2010 recommended). Some music features of iCloud are available in beta now in the U.S. only and require iOS 4.3.3 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.3 or later.

  • I have a Powerbook G4 running on OSx version 10.4.11.  I would like to get an iphone, but non-seem to sync with my computer.  Is there any options for me?

I have a Powerbook G4 running on OSX Version 10.4.11.  I currently have an Iphone 3, but it cannot sync with my computer because it reverts back to a version so old that I can't even text photos.  (I have itunes 9) I would like to get a new phone because mine constantly freezes up, but I figure what's the point of getting an iphone if it won't sync with my laptop.  I can't even listen to music on my iphone! Is it possible to get an Iphone 4s to sync with a G4 Powerbook?

    Hello,
Sadly not as an iPhone 4 running iOS 6 or above needs Mac OS X 10.6.8 or higher to sync in iTunes.
Mac OS X 10.6 is not compatible with an PowerBook

Accessing Gmail suddenly stopped working on both my Powerbook pro running latest OS and Mail versions and on my iPhone. I can access via the web. I get the error that my password or username is incorrect. I reset my password in Gmail and confirmed it works on gmail, I then changed it on my Iphone and Mac Mail. It still does not work. I deleted the gamil account on mail on my mac and reinstalled it and it still will not work

I too started having my password rejected in MAIL.app for imap.mail.me.com for my icloud email address.  Can login to icloud with web browser fine.  This has been happening off and on for several days.....if I wait 2-3 hours it will suddenly start working again, but then problem re-asserts itself ;-)

  • Looking for opinions on daemontools vs runit.

I have used daemontools quite extensively, and for quite a while.
I am curious if runit is worth switching over to, and how it compares to tried and true daemontools.
I am considering it, due to daemontools not being very well supported in some cases.
Does anyone have real world experience with both runit and daemontools, and could provide a comparison?
Is it worth switching, or is daemontools still the best option out there?

    opinions and observations so far:
runit's runsvdir only shows the stderr from a ./service/run script in the proctitle ps output. I found this an odd difference, as daemontool's readproctitle shows both stdout and stderr.
similarly runsv redirects only the stdout to a log service running via ./service/log/run, not the stderr (this goes to readproctitle). This was also somewhat unexpected. Granted it is very common if you are using a logging service to redirect stderr to stdout with an `exec 2>&1` at the start of a ./service/run script...but I still found it another oddity.
runit has a cool hack for process dependency support.
    #!/bin/sh
    set -e
    sv -w7 check postgresql
    exec some/app/with/a/dep/on/postgresql
runit's sv adds a service name argument to the path to the SVDIR for you. So you can be anywhere and say `sv up serviceName` and `/etc/service/serviceName/run` is started. daemontool's svc requires the full path to the service directory such as `svc -u /etc/service/serviceName`.
runit's sv has a few more signals it can send a supervised process for you (sigusr1,2, quit, etc) as apposed to daemontool's svc
instead of separate programs for setuidgid, setenvgid, etc.. like daemontools has, runit has a single chpst command that accepts arguments to achieve the same goals
runit's sv status output is much nicer/far more informative
    runit's has man pages!

  • Is there a way to boot up an iMac G5 from an external drive (PowerBook G4) running 10.2.8?

I have an iMac G5 running 10.5.8 and a couple of MacBooks running 10.6.
I also have a cherished old PowerBook G4, which will only rarely and briefly start up these days. It runs 10.2.8.
I would like to try to recover the original working environment (files and OS but also user interface, desktop settings, preferences, etc) of the PowerBook G4. I presume that one way of doing this would be to remove the hard drive of the PowerBook, place it in an enclosure, and try to boot up from it as from an external hard drive.
Would this be possible? Would I be able to boot my iMac G5 from the old drive or would this be impossible because of the drive's 10.2.8 OS? What are the alternatives?
What are some tips for doing this sort of thing safely, to begin with?
    Any thoughts much appreciated!

Instead of booting from the external, which as Niel pointed out, is not possible, how about simply dragging the data you need from the external after you mount it?

  • Can I Install Windows XP on a Powerbook G4  running on OsX Leopard?

I have a Powerbook powerpc G4, that is running on OS X Leopard v10.5.8 and a 1.25 GHz Processor.
I wanted to Install Windows XP on it, but bootcamp does not show anywhere in the computer. I also purchased VMWare to install and it will not install because it says it is not compatible with the "Architecture". what does that mean? Is it going to be impossible to install windows XP on this computer?
I would appreciate any help or any suggestions from anyone.
    Thank you.

I wanted to Install Windows XP on it, but bootcamp does not show anywhere in the computer.
Boot Camp is only for Intel Macs. You need to use Virtual PC or the Q emulator to run Windows in emulation on a PowerPC Mac. There is no way of booting into Windows on your computer.

  • Mac OS 9.2.1 CD fails to boot on PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9

I reformatted a friend's PowerBook G4 and installed Mac OS 10.3.9 with no problem. They have a few Classic applications they need to use, but I can't get the Mac OS 9.2.1 CD to boot so i can install it. The CD is bootable, because it says so right on the disc (white disc with orange "9"). I tried setting the startup disk to the CD drive, but that drive won't show up in the startup disk preferences. I've also tried installing from the desktop while booted into Mac OS X, but the OS 9 installer will not install. Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GHz; 512 MB RAM

Hi, Temporos. Most Powerbook G4 models aren't able to boot into OS 9.anything, regardless of the disc being used.
All Titanium PB G4s, which have two separate hinges and most of their ports on the back panel between the hinges, are bootable into some version of OS 9. Some of them require the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that was shipped on the discs that came with them. There is no other source for a bootable OS 9.2.2 on those models.
The many different Aluminum PB G4 models (12", 15" and 17"), which all have a single continuous hinge running all the way across the back and all their ports on the side panels, can't boot into any version of OS 9. The discs that were shipped with them include installers for Classic, i.e. a non-bootable installation of OS 9 that can be used to run OS 9-based apps in OS X.
Whether or not your Powerbook can boot to an OS 9.2.1 retail installer disc is not dependent on having OS 9 drivers installed on the hard drive. Even without those drivers installed, a Powerbook that is capable of booting to a retail 9.2.1 disc will do so, if the disc and the PB's optical drive are in working order. But if the PB can't boot to that disc, nothing you can do will change that.
Please identify your PB G4 model precisely. Then we'll know how to advise you.

  • How can I securely erase the hard drive for PowerBook G4 running 10.2.3?

I'm about to sell a PowerBook G4 12-inch running 10.2.3 after I erased the hard drive via the the original software install and restore disk. There was no secure erase option like there is in subsquent versions of OSX. Is there a way I can do a 7 (or 35) time erase on this machine? Thanks!

See this Apple note. Secure erase was added in 10.2.3, but in a different place than later releases.

  • Video and sound stutters in imovie project, made up entirely of stills with voice-over and music. I'm using iMovie 9.0.4 on a PowerBook 2GHz running 10.6.8 with 274 GB of space free. Size of project is 588 Gb.

I have 274 Gb of hard disc space left. I have shut off all other running programs and even disconnected from the internet, but nopthing seems to help. I acts like it's a memory problem of some sort, but all other applications run fine.

  • Using OS 9 on PowerBook G4 running OSX 10.5.8

I have a PowerBook G4 in good working order running OS 10.5.8.
I am trying to migrate upward Pagemaker 7 files from a MacPlus running  OS 6.  I have Adobe InDesign 2 on my PowerBook and this should open Pagemaker 7 files.  I can put my Pagemaker 7 files onto a 1.4 diskette on the OS 6 system.  Now I need to connect a 1.4 disk USB drive to my PowerBook to bring the Pagemaker 7 files into InDesign.
I have bought an Imation SuperDisk complete with its original installation disk.  I have installed on my PowerBook G4 the Mac OS 9 support files from the original G4 installation disc.  However, when I try to run the installation file, I get what I believe is an Apple message (not an Imation install message) that says:  "You can't open this application because the classic environment is not longer supported."  I suppose this is because I have upgraded from the original G4 OSX installation.
I suppose I could wipe the G4 clean and start over by installing the original OS that came with it with the OS 9 support files.  However, even if I then get the Imagion disk drive working, I probably won''t be able to run InDesign in that original OS.  Can you guide me?
Perhaps there is another way to move the Pagemaker 7 files from my MacPlus to my Powerbook G4?  At the moment it is not connected to the internet and I do not know how to set that up.  Or perhaps there is a computer to computer file transfer option?
Help greatly appreciated.  I really want to move these old elaborate Pagemaker 7 files up into InDesign 2, thence to 3, 4 etc.that I have on my iMac and MacMini.
    Thank you thank you!

    Careful what you call Classic.
Classic will not run under 10.5.
    You have four options:
    1. Firewire dual boot Mac OS X 9 & Mac OS X 10.5 on Macs that support Mac OS 9 booting:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757
    2. Firewire dual boot 10.4.11 & 10.5 installing Classic on the 10.4.11 drive.
    3. Dual boot two partitions in 10.4.11 and 10.5, installing Classic on the 10.4.11, or just installing 9 on a machine that supports booting into Mac OS 9.
    4. Dual boot two internal drives in 10.4.11 and 10.5, installing Classic on the 10.4.11, or just installing 9 on a machine that supports booting into Mac OS 9.
Booting is controlled through Apple menu -> System Preferences.
Classic has very limited driver support, whereas 9 booting supports the full array of Mac OS 9 drivers.

  • Problem installing Mac 10.4 on Powerbook G4 running Mac Os 10.4.3

    Greetings everyone!
I'm having hard time. I have Powerbook G4 1.67GHZ/512MB/15 inch display now running Mac OS 10.4.3. Well, I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS 10.4 by doing clean installation - that is by wiping out all the old files. Eachtime I put Mac OS 10.4 DVD and click on "Install Mac OS X" icon, a Mac OS message "click" on "Restart" button pops up. After clicking "Restart" button, normally the computer restarts, the gray screen appears with that little wheel, it then goes to the blue screen and thats all I see. Just blue screen. Nothing happens. Then I shut down the computer and restart it again while Ejecting the Mac OS 10.4 DVD out of the Computer, and then it starts without any problem and comes back to its original state.
Can you please help me. Thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • HELP! Powerbook G4 running extremely slowly!

    Hi all,
First off, some stats about the computer:
Powerbook G4 15", 1.33 GHz, 256 Mb DDR SDRAM, running on OSX 10.3.9 (Panther--yes, I got it a few years ago!) and with 3.5 Gb left of my 60 Gb hardrive.
    Now the symptoms:
I notice that my computer takes extremely long to start up. Additionally, I can barely run two applications concurrently without getting a busy cursor, a frozen computer, or worse, the black screen of death ("You must restart your computer"). Any seemingly simple task(s), especially uploading music files, watching videos on the internet, downloading podcasts, take forever to load. It also tends to warm up quickly and make whirring noises.
Any solutions on how to fix it? I'm definitely open to buying/installing hardware (I've already replaced the bottom case myself) since I don't have the money to just get a new computer. Do I need more memory? Should I just get a bigger hard drive? Is there something else I need to do?

    Hi,
There are thousands of websites, dealers and brands of external hard drives to choose from. LaCie by NEC have a long standing affiliation with Macs, although, there are many more. The same goes for RAM, however, your choice of RAM is critical. Ive always suggested going with the original Samsung RAM, but other quality brands include Crucial and Kensington. I've attached a link to one site (Small Dog Electronics) to give you an idea of what you are looking at.
    http://www.smalldog.com/category/x/x/x/Storageand_Backup|External_Hard_Drives|ByConnection|FireWire
Onyx - I'd suggest running Onyx now, before you do anything else. Run 'Automation'. I usually de-select the font cache cos I have many fonts installed and clearing the font cache causes me to have to run Font Fusion to re-activate all my fonts again, which is a time consuming pain in the bart.
