Opinions on the Turbo Memory hard drive cache
What advantage does this give? Is this just fluff?
Is the onboard hard drive cache not enough? If not, if this really did something, why wouldn't it be larger than 8mb?
I see no other companies offering this option and can't find much information on it.
Does anyone have it? Does anyone take it seriously?

Intel Turbo Memory hard drive cache on a T60p
I have windows Vista and the Tubro memory wasn't an available option when I bought it. Can I buy it and install in on my laptop? Would it even be worth it to do so?

The main advantage to having an Intel Turbo Memory module seems to be slightly improved performance on systems which do not have a lot of memory (i.e., 512MB) and in providing slightly improved battery life.
If you have a system which does not have much memory in it and you use it primarily on battery, then it might make sense to add it.
Physically, the module is a Mini-PCIe card, so you would need to make sure your particular model of ThinkPad has an open expansion slot, or swap out whatever is currently installed in the system to make room for the new module.

What are the best External Hard Drives In your opinions?
Hi, I have quite a few Mac's G5 Quad, Power Book, down to I-macs. I would like to ask all you apples users what you think are the best External Hard Drives? I have quite a few Lacie's but am dissapointed at their reliability. have had to send at least 3 back and lost all date! (had a back-up of the back-up) ..... I have thousands of high res pictures that I would like to back-up and my entire music library of 2000 CD's. Could you please tell me what the most reliable and compatible Hard Drives are? I was thinking of getting G Drive Q's. As I saw them in the apple store. What do you guys think? Thanks.....
I assume you are thinking in terms of FireWire still? In which case I'll 2nd the OWC Oxford cases. Though I buy FW800. I have not bought any which are 'built in RAID enabled' or dual. I do have one $68 dual bay SATA drive case though connected to Sonnet Tempo SATA controller ($79). Not bootable but great.

2nd: FW800/400 - and you might want to put a FW800 PCIe controller if you use them heavily or a lot.
You want to isolate consumer firewire electronics and hard drives as far away from each other - and not share or daisy chain - too much noise on the cable interferes with drives. -

My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on!
It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK.
Has my start up hard drive failed? Can it be fixed?

Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong. -
Can the flash storage hard drives in the brand new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops that were just released a few days ago (10.22.13) be upgraded/replaced in the future? I will need more than the basic 256GB for sample libraries using music software, among other things, but currently larger flash drives from Apple are too expensive. I ask because I'm in the process of buying one of the new 15inch Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops right now (or at least right after I get an answer to this question).
I saw in the Mac store when I started looking at the build options for ordering the Macbook Pro that under Memory it said the memory was built into the computer and therefore could not ever be replaced or upgraded in the future. So I was wondering if something similiar might be the case with the flash storage drives even though the same wasn't written under the hard drive options? If these flash drives can be replaced in the future then I would just purchase the starting 256GB drive and suffer through using connected external hard drives, as unwieldy as that would be, until there were potential replacement flash drives with larger storage capacties available on the market or through Apple for more reasonable prices. But if the hard drives in these laptops can't be replaced/upgraded I would go for the 500GB drive option (even though paying an additional $300, before taxes, for just 244GBs more storage space is absolutely outrageous no matter how great flash drives are with their read/write speeds, no moving parts to break, and lighter weight/thinner builds allowing for an overall thinner laptop). I would even go for the larger 1TB option, which is really what I need, except that costs an additional $700 which is more than enough to buy me a new 50inch, HD, flatscreen TV from a reputable brand if I were so inclined! (And yes, I understand the youth of the technology, current limits to flash drive capacities, and the reason for the high prices. I know I'm not getting bilked...)
So yeah, does anybody have an answer to this question? Can the flash hard drives in the new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops, just released, be upgraded/replaced in the future? Any answers are greatly appreciated and will save me some much needed cash on my purchase of one of these laptops! And I should also ask, if so, can they be replaced by the laptop owner with the normal toolset through the normal, easily done methods of hard drive replacement in laptops that has been common, or would I have to bring the laptop to a Apple technician?

macsales.com has been working on providing aftermarket modules for the older models that were on the SATA Bus.
These newer ones are likley directly on the PCIe Bus. That will take some time to develop. -

The internal will operate faster but editing uses both the Final Cut Application (on the internal), and the external which is used to store and access the video that you have shot and on which is stored the Capture Caches, and which also stores and accesses the various other caches such as Video Render, Waveform etc.
Does a faster hard drive decrease rendering time?
I think it must, but I have never timed it.

I think that a second internal drive would be faster than an external Firewire drive. However, a Thunderbolt drive is said to be very fast, but I do not know whether it would be faster than a conventional internal drive. This question would best be asked of the Final Cut Discussion Groups because thay might have experience.

Rendering long sections of video in the Final Cut software does take a long time, especially when it is imported from another source, such as a .mov, and when something simple like a transition is inserted or even moved or altered, or a filter is applied, rendering must be carried out in that area to see the effect properly. So you are on the right lines in thinking about how to speed it up. -
What practical difference is there in using an internal hard drive with 16 vs 32 MB cache? How noticeable would the performance difference be, and under what circumstances?

A larger cache means more data can be held in ready access=faster performance.
The most frequently used data is held on the hard drive cache.
Cache isn't all, though.
Platter numbers and platter density are important as well.
A two platter 640GB drive with 16MB cache will outperform a 1GB 4 platter drive with 32MB cache.
The same 640GB drive at 7200 rpm also outperforms a 10k rpm drive with equal cache and only one platter.
A larger cache will help without you really noticing, save for snappier operations.
The easiest way to see, is to boot to a smaller cached drive, run some routine applications, and then reboot to the larger cached drive and run the same.
But, again, cache size isn't the whole story........ -
Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive? If so, could you explain how? Thanks. I am a new user with mountain lion.
You could partition the drive into 2 partitions. One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups. If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac. Then a partitioned drive would be fine. -
Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?
Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive. I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB. I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive. 10.6.8
Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.

Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason. At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups. At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose. -
Can I use the same external hard drive for time machine and storing other files
I have a 640GB external hard drive that I have been using for over a year for time machine backups. My mac hard drive is now starting to fill up and I am looking to move audio, video and picture files to my external hard drive. How do I do this without messing up my time machine backups? Can I do both on the same external hard drive? Do I just make new folders on the external hard drive to move the files I want? Thanks for the help.
If you move the files you will need to get another disk to back the files up to. You don't want to have only one copy of certain files (personal, professional etc.).

iLife is preinstalled on all the Macs. If you purchased iLife in the App Store or your computer came without DVDs, open App Store > Purchases and download the applications. If your Mac came with discs, insert the Applications DVD and install iLife applications

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
