Opinions on this "upright" desktop docking stand?

I'm looking for a stand or dock that will keep my laptop cool while using an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Is it possible to boot up/shutdown one's macbook or macbook pro with the laptop folded completely shut while using this dock?? It definitely looks like a space saver but I'm not sure about booting and shutting down. I'm interested in any and all opinions...

Hi, Brandon. It isn't possible to start up a MBP with its display closed. To use it in clamshell mode, you must open it up to start it. You can then put it to sleep, wake it in clamshell mode, use it, and shut it down or put it to sleep from the external keyboard and mouse without opening it.
I keep a couple of wire file-folder stands on my desk for folders that I access constantly in the course of my work. If I were using my MBP in clamshell mode, I wouldn't hesitate to devote an appropriate-sized slot in one of those stands for the MBP itself — making sure, of course, that the adjacent compartment on each side of it was left empty to provide airspace around the MBP for cooling. I'd also put a shallow "U' folded from cardboard in the bottom of the slot so the horizontal wire bars that support the folders and dividers wouldn't mar the front edge of the MBP. This arrangement would be much more stable than the stand you've linked, and wouldn't add more clutter to my already debris-strewn desktop. And it would cost me nothing.

  • 3G Mobile Hotspot / Desktop dock

I originally had the 2G hotspot.  Which I loved.  I never had a problem with it.  I was able to log on using my old Dell computer at home.  I was also able to connect to my company's VPN with no problem.  I currently purchased the 4G LTE Mifi.  I love it (at times), but there are a couple of problems and would like to know if I could work around them.  First, it is necessary to know that my MIFI works.  In some parts of my home it works at 4G, other parts of my home it will work at 3G and the 1X? option.  That's okay with me.  I live in a rural neighborhood.  Two day's ago I bought my MAC home from work because I wanted to see if it would work with both operating systems (my MAC is partitioned where it has the Leopard OS as well as a Windows OS).  I used the windows side and it works.  It kicked me off a couple of times and I haven't found a way to fix that.  Giving me the error stating that I'm connected but have no internet access.  Then I used the MAC side.  It connected, but then I received a message that I was connected but had no internet access.  So, I logged onto 192.168.1.1 and it showed me if I was connected or not and what speed I was connected.  Now, my questions:
When I log on using MIFI, can I then connect the 3G Mobile Hotspot on my phone and then connect to my computers that way?    Since I never had a problem with my hotspot before, I would like to know if that can work without being charged for extra data?
Why am I able to connect, but then not have internet access?
I love having the MIFI, because where I live I can't get DSL; but if I have to go back to my 2G hotspot then I will.  I have been having way too many problems not being able to connect to my company's VPN and that is really the only reason why I have it.
Next question is about the desktop dock:
I had the original Motorola Droid and I must say have never had a problem with it or the desktop dock that I purchased.  I love having it so that I can listen to music while at my desk. The volume button is on the same side as the connector that goes into the dock.  I have looked into the settings and cannot find something that will place the volume on the screen.  It is driving me crazy.
Is there a way to change the volume without having to move the phone from the dock?
Is there also a way to toggle back and forth between the desktop screen and the regular home screen?  With my old phone and dock, I was able to hit the home button and it would take me back and forth.  Now, the only way to do this is to remove the phone from the dock and put it back on.  Which I am not a big fan of.
    Thank you for your help,
    Rose H

One way you may be able ro resokve connection without restarting device is by cycling the airplane mode, this works well for the usual internet connection.

    Hello:
Thank you for the update for remote access for desktops.
Personally, I do not want to give remote access to anyone but myself as privacy is my friend.  Can this remote desktop software still be for me personally unless I allow access and for my MAC lap top only?  What if I do not update? I do use this lap top in other countries.  compatibility issues with what?

Apple Remote Desktop is off be default. It has to be enabled for some one to be able to remotely connect to the computer. And then, you still have to have a user name and password on the computer to remotely connect with.
If you want to see if remote access has is enabled for Apple Remote Desktop; you can find the setting in, Apple Menu, System Prefrences, Sharing. If it's enabled, Remote Management or Screen Sharing will be checked.
Beucase Apple Remote Desktop Agent is part of the Mac Operating System; even if your not using it, Apple Software Updates will from time to time offer updates for ARD Agent. Software Updates can some times be stacked ontop of each other; so chosing not to install an update, can mean other updates you may want may not be offered. At least until you install the updates those updates require. Also software updates can improve the security of your computer.

I had my MBP near two finger length magnets and someone told me that its not good for computers! Anyone's opinions on this cause my computer seems fine?

Don't worry about it.  The MBP has built-in magnets.  Does magsafe power connector ring a bell?  The motor inside of the hard drive has a magnet.
You would need an extremely powerful magnet to affect a hard drive.  I'm sure the electromagnet they use at a scrap yard to pick up a car could do it.
A long time ago I tried to erase some floppy diskettes by placing a magnet directly against the outer cover of the diskette.  It had no effect on the recorded data.

  • Opinions about this PSU

    Hi everyone!
I want to know opinions about this PSU, a Topower True 320W, it cost a half than an Antec True 430, and has the same values for 3.3, 5 and 12v. Here are the details
    http://www.topower.com.tw/home/atx12v_320p4.htm
For what I've seen on THG website, seems to be a good one.
    Specs:
    DC Output +3.3V +5V +12V -12V -5V +5VSB
    Max        26A  32A  15A 1.0A 0.8A 2.5A
    Peak       28A  41A  19A 1.0A 0.8A 2.5A
    Combined     180W   180W  12W  4W 12.5W
                    300W            28W
    Peak Load 420W/60secs
Efficiency 70% minimum at 115 VAC, 320W output
Note: I'll use it at 230 VAC, I don't know if this will change any values of the above.
    Thanks in advance

Stilup is right. Skimping on a power supply will only bring you more headaches than it's worth. Buy a Good brand name supply 400+ watts, and you will never run into tons of problems that others have, trying to run a hi power system with a $29.95 power supply. Every time you up the cpu ,you need more power. Bigger video card? more power. Add a drive? more power. If you buy a marginal supply in the beginning, you may get it to run your system, until you add something. I have seen hundreds of posts that when they finally divuge what the specs of thier supplys, it is painfully clear what the problem is. All my systems run at least a 400+watt supply with at least 220 combined watt. The exception to this rule, is True power supplys, that supply each single rail seperately ,so the combined thing doesn't apply. BD51

  • Any way to standardize desktop (dock, Aliases) between several Macs?

I use 5 different Macs, and would like to make all the desktops look exactly the same. The apps are mostly the same, but I can't just use a clone of the disk because the data (and disk size) are all different. All I want is for my dock (with the folders containing aliases to apps) and other aliases to apps on the desktop to be the same on all so that everything is where I expect to find it no matter which machine I'm sitting at. Is there any such convenient solution? Other than cloning the whole disk, surely someone who manages a lab of 100 Macs for students or something like this has a clever way of deploying the same experience for multiple computers?

I do that by syncing my laptop iCal with my iPod, and then moving my iPod to my desktop and importing the calendars. The way this works is kind of clumsy, maybe because I don't know better. But what I have to do is delete the calendars from my desktop computer that I want to update, and then import the new ones from the iPod. Then I have to reset the colors on the calendars I just imported. It's not a perfect solution, but it works well enough.

  • Original Desktop, Dock & Documents Lost on Reboot (Lion)

Have been using Lion on my 27" iMac without problems since release.  Typically have a number of external hard drives attached, each with separate functions (iTunes Library/files on one, Aperture library/photos on one, etc.).
Recently ejected all external discs, shut down Mac.
When rebooting - without external drives attached - the desktop picture was different (stock apple background), the dock icons and settings were different (original apple lineup of icons and no hiding function turned on), and all desktop files were missing.  Also, all files in my Documents folder were missing.
It's as if the user settings, preferences, and home files were all on a remote disk rather than my actual desktop - even though I never set it up that way.
Not sure how this could happen, or how to get back original setup.  If I save a file to the Desktop, doesn't that place the file on the C drive and therefore have nothing to do with external drives?  Also, my Home folder is still there (with the same name it had originally) but the Documents folder inside is empty.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks.

The first thing I'd try would be to shut down and reconnect the drives. If it boots up and everything's back to normal you at least know the files are somewhere, even if they're not in the right place

  • Add Applications to Desktop Dock

I have set up additional accounts for our kids on my MacBook Pro.  When logging onto their accounts the dock at bottom of desktop screen only shows Finder, Application Folder, Docs Folder, Shared Folder & Trash.  When I try to drag an application icon to the left side of the doc for shortcut clicking, it will add it to the left but then remove it when I close the application.  How can I get selected application icons to stay over on the left side so they are easily there when my kids logon to their accounts?

I just tried that and it stays in the Dock (left side) while app is open but when I log out and log back in the icon is no longer in the Dock (left side).  I have to go back through the app folder and re-open it.  On my main (admin) account login the icons stay in the left side regardless of whether it's open or not.  This is what I'm trying to accomplish for kids' desktop so that they don't have to go searching for appropriate apps.

  • Using the MacBook as a desktop - docking station?

Hey guys, I have a dual-core G5 that I my mother is using as her desktop. She recently got a macbook which has more than enough power for her and I would like to take the G5. The problem is she still wants to have the desktop feel while she's in her office. So, I told her she could keep the display and the keyboard/mouse and they would all plug into her laptop and she could use it the exact same way.
But, she doesn't want to plug each one of those in everytime she sits down. Is there a docking station that would allow her to plug in one usb cord or something along those lines?
What is the easiest way to do this?

For MacBook dock, it is not available yet, but I bet due its popularity, it will soon available from third party.
The easiest way for now is using usb / firewire hub, so she just need to plug single usb cable for keyboard, mouse and other usb device, and single fw cable.
But it doesn't help with the monitor cable connection.
IF you willing to buy apple bluetooth mouse and keyboard (or other brand that cheaper), maybe your mom just need to deal with monitor cable only thru appropriate apple mini dvi adapter.
    Good Luck.

  • Multiple Desktop Dock Application Interface

    Hello,
When I minus an application to the dock on one desktop, and try to open it from the dock on another desktop, it routes me back to the previous desktop the application was minused on. can this be fixed?

    ?
The behavior to show the first app in the folder (and, actually, the 2nd and 3rd app behind it) is by design. This is normal and expected behavior.
Whether you (lo, whether many people) actually like or prefer this behavior to the Tiger behavior is a separate matter completely, one which has been debated here both hotly and frequently. No need for another thread on THAT

  • How do I make this script: Hide dock while Gimp is open, automatically?

Scenario: I need to maximize my 1024x768 screen when I do photo editing, so every time I open Gimp.app, I hide my dock. Since I tend to re-arrange icons on my dock periodically, I generally like to leave it showing. When I quit Gimp.app, I sometimes forget to un-hide the dock and am annoyed later on when I can't easily see the icons.
Goal: This may seem trivial, but it would be nice to make a small application that does the following:
    1) Either launch Gimp.app, or simply link something to Gimp.app that launches my home-made application concurrently.
    2) Hides the Dock when Gimp.app launches.
    3) Runs in the background, ideally not visibly, and not using more than 4 or 5 MB of RAM or generating any processor load, and observes when I either quit Gimp.app or quit X11.
    4) Shows the dock and terminates itself when I Gimp.app closes.
If I use this as a launcher, I could give it a Gimp icon and put it in the Dock instead of Gimp. If it is activated by Gimp, the other option I mentioned in #1, the icon would not be significant because hiding mode will be turned on every time my home-made app is open.
I see several potential solutions but can't iron out the details. I have searched Google and these forums, and found solutions to a few similar problems, but have not been able to adapt those solutions to my needs. If this could be handled better with something other than AppleScript, feel free to point it out. The ideas I have for doing this are:
    1) Write an AppleScript
    2) Set this up in Automator
    3) Save a Unix shell script, or
    4) Write a simple Java application.
I think using Java would make this unnecessarily complicated, because #1, #2, and #3 can all handle system events quite well, that's not really what Java was meant to do. It may still be an option, though. I have generated a few working parts of the program in #1 and #2, but I the only waiting command I could find waits for the user to click in a dialogue box, not to quit an application.
I hope this isn't too much of a newbie question, I've done a lot with Macs before, and this ought to be simple but I'm stumped. I've never needed to post on a Mac forum, but you can find me all over the Linux forums, since that isn't my forte! Help will be greatly appreciated.

Save the code, provided below, as an applications (AppleScript applet, via the 'File Format:' popup menu), and click on the 'Options:' 'Stay Open' checkbox to add a check mark.

I've got this little white (with a little grey part with the number 16 on it) thing which I think came with my iPod Touch 3G. I have no idea what to do with it. There is a hole in it that seems to be for the dock connector. But how do I use this?

Agreed. Many people have asked this same question as I had done so myself at one time.
