Opinions on which printer best fits needs...

I will be going to Japan soon for work and was recommended that I bring my own laptop, printer, speakers, etc. I have a 13" aluminum MacBook that I bought last Christmas and it's still in tip top shape. I've been looking at the printers for sale on this website, but there is so many. I am not sure which to choose from. I will be doing a lot of printing, scanning, and copying for work, but when not working I plan to be taking a lot of photos (photography is one of my favorite hobbies) - so I would also like a printer that prints out photographs really well. I would preferably like a printer that can do all this, but still isn't too too heavy and bulky. Any suggestions?

I'd say go here: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/macaccessories/printers and look at the Photosmart printers. They're a bit bulky--but if you're going to be gone more than a few weeks, and doing the work you'll be doing, it might just be worth your while.
Don't forget to get any international power cord adapters before you go. I'd also look into a powerstrip with surge protection, and at least one set of extra printer cartridges.
Kichi! (Japanese for good luck!)

  • Which option best fits the definition of encapsulation ?

    Hi Folks,
    In this test question :
    How can you implement encapsulation.
    A) By making methods private and variable private
    B) By making methods are public and variables as private
    C) Make all variable are public and access them using methods
    D) Making all methods and variables as protected
    What could be the answer ?
    I guess making variables private and accessing them with methods with appropriate access levels would be the way to go for encapsulation.But I am not able to relate any of the options with that.
    I would appreciate if I receive some feedback on this.
    Thank you for your consideration.

    Surely to answer this question you must first state the definition of encapsulation to which you subscribe and then evaluate each of the answers in terms of that definion.
    So, which definition would you like to use?
    Some would say that using a standardised definition might help; and fortunately the International Organisation for Standardization has published just such a definition in its standard: Open Distributed Processing, ISO/IEC 10746. There, they define encapsulation as:
    "... the property that the information contained in a modelled entity is accessible only through interactions at the interfaces supported by that modelled entity."
    You may or may not agree with the ISO on this, but let's run with their definition and see where it gets us, shall we?
    Firstly, encapsulation concerns accessibility, and on this point, your alternatives are clearly and crisply distinguishable. This is good.
    Secondly, the, "Information," referred to here is not just data: it also includes behaviour, i.e., methods. Thus it makes little sense to distinguish between data-encapsulation and method-encapsulation; both a method and a variable can be a point of access of an class. This somewhat cheapens all the alternatives given in your test, which is not good.
    Thirdly, encapsulation is not binary: it is not usually a yes/no answer; so we will almost certainly have degrees of encapsulation and thus can rate the answers given in your test on this gradient.
    Fourthly, it can be shown, if you begin with the above definition, that encapsulation's benefit is in minimising the number of potential dependencies with the highest probability of modification event propagation. Thus we can also rate the answers given in your test by asking how each exposes classes to such potential dependencies.
    Lastly, some of the answers you've been given are wonderfully vague, so we'll have to watch our step; frankly, some of them, because of their vagueness, are discountable for reasons that go beyond encapsulation and deep into the realm of common sense.
    Let's take a look at the answers, though before we do, we must decide whether the answers pertain to a specific, single class or to all classes in our system: we shall presume the latter, that these answers concern a general approach to programming, rather than advising on a single class's design (it actually makes a difference).
    "A) By making methods private and variable private."
    Well, by making all methods and variables private you will effectively deny all access to information stored in all classes: this would make all your classes unusable, which makes the question of any of their properties a moot point.
    "B) By making methods public and variables private."
    (The vagueness begineth: it's presumed that this implies making all methods public.) This would give access to the information of all the classes via all their methods, which means that none of their behaviours are information-hidden, even though all their data is information-hidden. This is better than (A) but not an ideal way to design a system: given that all methods in all classes are accessible, then potential dependencies may form on all of them and thus changing any method could potentially ripple to all other classes in the system: a deeply costly prospect.
    "C) Make all variables public and access them using methods."
    This makes all data accessible and some unspecified subset (perhaps all) of behaviours accessible in all classes. This would seem to offer more accessibility than (B) and so would offer a greater modification event propagation probability than (B). This thus seems less satisfactory than (B).
    "D) Making all methods and variables protected."
    Protected accessibility is theoretically problematic, but it implies that there are at least some clients that have full access to all classes, with the consequent costly modification event propagation probability. This alternative, however, is discountable for reasons that lie beyond encapsulation, as it implies that the only way that classes in different packages could communicate is if the classes are subclasses of one another; it's almost impossible to imagine a semantically coherent system in which all these classes were subclasses of one another, so this alternative can be rejected on the grounds of implausibility (if not silliness).
    So, if we go with ISO above, then we're left with the following alternatives in order of decreasing appropriateness: B, C, D and A.
    So B would be my answer, though I'd have to swallow hard to write it.
    For more on encapsulation according to the ISO, see, "How to encapsulate software (Part 1)," here:

  • I have 2 HP AC adaptors, How do I know which AC adaptor fits my printer?

    I have 2 HP All-in-One Printers, One is a 7210xi All-in-One and the other is an HP Office Jet 5610 All-in-One,   The 2 AC adapters are: 0950-4483-LA and 0957-2153.  How do I know which  AC adaptor fits the HP Office Jet 5610 All-in-One?

    0n the printer, near the power jack, should have a power details, something like "32v 1.5A", match that with the same on the adaptor. Also, they are color coded and some has a key, so the wrong one probably wouldn't fit anyway.

    Look for cloud solutions such as DropBox, OneDrive, SugarSync or others. They are all cloud based services that sync documents between computers via the cloud. Of course another solution is simply a flash drive formatted in exFat so that Macs and Windows computers can read it.

    I have to run Windows for work, yuk! Which is best Parallels, Fusion, or Boot Camp? I will not need to share anything with my Mac side as I will just be running one program to chat on the web and send Emails.

    Parallels, Fusion and VirtualBox are all virtualization applications, they 'virtualize' (create) a Windows environment on your Macs OSX operating system.
    Boot Camp makes a compatible partition on your hard drive so you may install windows on it directly.

  • Line of best fit in scatter plots

    when making a line of best fit ( in this case a curve of best fit) how do I extend the curve beyond my data so that I can extrapolate information? Can I do this or will I have to do it manually? (print it out and draw it myself)

    If you graph your data you can allow Numbers to plot a best fit AND show the equation it used (which will depend on the type of fit you selected).
    Here I plotted some data where I introduced random noise (so it won't be "perfect") then had Numbers provide the best fit.:
    The bluse graph is the original data.  The Green is a prediction based on the coefficients from Numbers.
    Once you graph the original data click on the graph, and then click a second time on one of the points in the graph to highlight the series:
    Once you have the series highlighted you can use the Chart Inspector to turn on the Trendline.
    I selected Polynomial because (1) It fit best and (2) the equation I used to make my made-up data was actually a polynomial.  Check the "Show Equation" box to see the coefficients.  Now take these coefficients and place then in cells of your table that has the original data (or some other table).
    Now add a new column to your data (I called mine Ypredicated or Yextrapolated):
    Now add a fomula to use the coefficients which will produce a 2nd graph you may extend beyond the data set:
    C2=$E$6*A2*A2+$E$7*A2+$E$8
    select C2 and fill down as needed (make sure the references to the coefficients are absolute... hence the "$" before the cell row and column names in the formula)
    Finally add the extrapolated curve to your graph to see if it fits:
    click on the graph
    1) click the little cog at the top of the X column and select "Share X values"
    <can't include screen shot right now... not sure why>
    2) then expand the graph data set by clicking and holding the little circle at the bottom right of the highlighted area, and drag to the right so the new predicted column is included.
    <can't include screen shot right now... not sure why>

  • Is it possible to show a best fit line

    i am plotting percent fructose V.S density and trying to do a best fit line. A connect the dots jagged line would not be appropreate. Is it possibleto do this?

    Short answer: No. Wait to see what the next version brings. The only real work-around is to add a data set using the same x values and new y values, predicted from the linear regression. You would then have to draw a line over the resulting plot points manually. Then, "hide" the extra data set by eliminating the data point fill and outline.
    Only help I can offer is to look in your Utilities folder for an app named "Grapher." It can do everything you ask (and then some) and also produces high quality graphs as well (which can be copied and pasted into other apps in a variety of formats). Best of all, it's free and you probably already have it. It plots both discrete data sets as well as true functions. And yes, it will do linear regressions (and power, exponential, polynomial, and "custom" ones as well).
    Unfortunately, iWork's charting abilities are best described as "laughably pathetic." In stead of revolutionizing the charting aspect of spreadsheets, Apple chose to follow in M$'s footsteps, aka the path of a sado-masochistic CPA or "the Excel way." In essence, Numbers is only capable of producing what I call "bin count" charts (as in pie charts, bar graphs, and line/area charts). The "scatterplots" Numbers produces are really a hacked version of bin count charts. As such, they are basically useless for real scientific/engineering/mathematic plots. In fact, it does them so badly, I'm surprised the "scatterplot" option even made the cut for the final release.
    Things that breaks/cripples Numbers' "scatterplot":
    • No control over range of axis. "Value Axis Format" controls don't function properly/always remain blank and there is only one set of values for both axis (just like a bin count chart, whose "x axis" has no real, numerical value; so, doesn't need any controls). And there is no way to lock the scale of the axis so, for example, 10 units on the x axis is the same physical distance as 10 units on the y axis.
    • Axis grid divisions are only allow to be integers between 1 and 10 (which only makes sense for a bin count plot).
    • No 3D, log, log-log, ln, ln-ln, cylindrical, or spherical plots.
    • No true function plots. And there is no way to connect points, it only plots discrete data sets.
    • No control of data point marker sizes, only the fill/outline color and outline thickness.
    • Chart legend gets it's text from the independant variable (aka x values) column title, not the dependant (y value) column title, like it should. (Something that only makes sense on a bin count chart, which usually only have one column of data per data set.)
    • Each data set must come from adjacent pairs of columns. (You can't have one set of x values for a table of multiple y values.)
    • No way to control the size of the plot area itself (only the overall size of the chart rectangular area, which includes the axis text). So you can't fake a line chart as an overlay over a scatterplot, there's no way to align them.
    • Only does linear regressions directly (and then you have to put it together from pieces). No exponential, log, ln, power, or polynomial fits.
    • Charting brings Numbers to it's knees as far as speed is concerned.
    • I haven't found a way to ADD a data set to chart, it always seems to replace the data already plotted (or am I missing something or fighting a bug?).
    Heck, there isn't even error bars on it's financial charts, so you can't even do a simple high-low-close stock price tracking, line chart. Other than that, it you want a 2 1/2D pie chart with wood grain texturing, Apple's got you covered!
    Scott
    P.S. Just in case those of you reading this think I'm an Apple/Numbers hater, you couldn't be more wrong. I'm a huge fan of Numbers and it has permanently bumped Excel off of my dock. (I just don't use it for charting.) I call'em like I see 'em. And Apple can't fix it if they don't know it's broken.

  • Best-fit Heap

    Hi
    I am trying to change a heap allocation from first fit to best fit. I understand that for best it i will have to traverse the whole memory block and find the block which is closest to the one asked for. But, how do i keep track of the differences.
    Here is the chunk of code for first fit
    for (x = free, back = -1; block [x] != -1; back = x, x = block [x+1])
      if (block[x] > size) break; //size is the size that is needed for the running programnow for best fit i am assuming that i 'let' the first block be the best case and then traverse through the list.
    If some one could give me a few hints...i would really apreciate it
    -bhaarat

    thx i came up w/ another algorithm though...it seems about right to me please have a look at it and tell me what you think.
    best = free;
    for(x = free, back = -1; ((x != -1)&&(block[x] != -1)); back =x, x = block[x + 1])//have the && statement cuz sometimes when x = -1 i get a run time error
                 if (block[best] == size)     break;
                 else if (block [best] > size)
                      diff = block [best] - size;//calculate the difference
                            if (block[best+1] != -1)//if the next loc of heap has -1 in it then there is no need to compare as we dont have neother choice but to split a block.
                           if (((block[block[best+1]] -size > 0) && (block[block[best+1]] -size < 10)) && (block[block[best+1]] -size < diff))
                                best = block [best +1];
                   if (x == 0) break;

  • Line of best fit

    Is there a way I can get a linear line of best fit for an XY plot.
    Thanks,
    Matt.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Have you looked at the fitting palette under "Mathematics"?  You need the Full Development System for these tools.
    You can take the Best Linear Fit array from the linear fit.vi and wire this into your graph as a secondary plot.

  • Bessel function best fit

    Hi all,
    Quite new to LabVIEW. I am capturing diffraction images that are described by Bessel J functions. The maxima of the diffraction correspond to the maxima of the Bessel J functions ( or zeros of 1st derivative).  I wish to fit the diffraction image intensities to a Bessel J function , pixel value -> best fit to x in J(x). Has anyone previously done this before? I know the order n of the Bessel function but not necessarilly the pixel where x=0.
    Similarly, I hope to fit the diffraction image of a pinhole which is an Airy Disk to use as calibration ie pixel -> m^-1.
    Any help or suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
    Regards,
    Leeser

    Leeser,
    Considering you are relatively new to labVIEW, your program was very well structured and seems to approach the problem in the right manner. As you correctly guessed right from the beginning, no-one it seems has attempted fitting a Bessel function to their data. The 'best-fit' VI's found in the 'Fitting Pallette' are more generally concerned with parametric, powers and exponential type functions, rather than more complex differentials such as the Bessel. In cases similar to yours, it seems that people haave tried adopting the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm which is a Non-Linear Fitting VI found in the Fitting Pallette. This is the Lev-Mar VI which Kristie Elam reccomended you using for the Airy disc. This function allows one to define the equation with which they wish to fit their data, but due to the complexity of the Bessel function, this may be quite tricky.
    I have been working on an example VI which provides the basic structure of what you need to implement in to your program. The Bestfit VI converts a picture using the IMAQ functions and then plots the converted data. You can manipulate the row control to choose which row of pixels you wish to analyse. The VI then calls the Lev-Mar Best Fit function which in itself calls the Bessel Formulae VI which is a template for the Bessel Formulae that the Lev-Mar function will use in its best-fit approximation. It is within this VI that you will need to enter the neccessary formulae to produce your theoretical Bessel function. The Lev-Mar Bestfit function can then use this data to plot a Least Squares Best Fit approximation against your spectrum.
    Aswell as the Bestfit and Bessel Formulae VI's, I have attached a Gaussian Example VI which gives a complete example of a Bestfit approximation using this method. Furthermore, I have attached a couple of VI's that I found which I hope may help you to develop the Bessel formulae. These include a table of Bessel roots, which you may be able to use to produce a table of the derivative roots, those found on your schematic.
    I really hope this information and the files I have attached will be of use to you, I'm just sorry there isn't a direct tool with which you can produce the bestfit approximation. Keep me posted on your progress as I've been working on this for a few days now and would like to see how it goes!
    With regards to the Airy disc, I would keep on with the files that you received from Kristie Elam, hopefully using the same method with both the Bessel functions and Airy disc might make things easier for you.
    I hope this informtaion is of use to you, best wishes and good luck!

  • Best fit graphs tool

    Hi,
    Iam new to this forum,
    Can any one help me which is the best Charting tool in java that supports overlays?
    Thank u

    Can any one help me which is the best Charting tool
    in java that supports overlays?The title of your post and the body of your post seem not to match!
    If I make the assumption that you want to plot a chart of some raw data and overlay with a chart of a 'best fit' to that data then JFreeChart (www.jfree.org) will allow you to do the charting but you will have to look else where for the 'best fit'.
    Of course, there are many 'best fits' to any set of data so you will need to define exctly what you mean by 'best fit'. Using Google on - "best fit" Java - gave several good starting points.

  • Forms - Radio Buttons as check boxes which turn into circles - Need them to stay as check boxes.

    Hi
    I am working on some forms for Teachers Reports it is a generic document for student reports. I have set the document in Indesign 6 and edited the pdf form in Acrobat Pro.
    The form consists of Radio Buttons (Check Boxes) as they have to score the child between 1-4 and the teacher is only allowed to select 1 box from out of the 4 boxes (hence radio buttons) .
    The problem we are having is that there might be 2-3 teachers that have to write and score each child's in a certain section of the report and they might use a PC or MAC to do this.
    For some reason, some of the reports have changed the Radio Button "Check Boxes" to a "Circle" both in the PDF and when printing and they need it to be a Check box. (In indesign this was set to Check Box and to print as a Check box)
    Some how after the teachers have used different computers the check boxes have changed to circles and we need to change them back to check boxes but is there a way to change them without having to go "Forms" > "Edit" > "Select all circles" > "Properties" > "Options" > "Button Styles" > "Change to Check".
    But it is not changing to all of the reports on some.
    Is there an easier option can select properties and search the "circles" and change to "check boxes" for the whole document?
    I really don't want to have to go into each report and have to change each individually or export and import the data in the forms and the teachers dont want to have to rewrite each report.
    Someone please help!

    Are all of the teachers using Adobe Reader (or Acrobat), as opposed to something like Preview on tha Mac or Microsoft Reader on Windows? Preview is known to corrupts PDF form in a number of ways, including converting radio buttons to check boxes. Microsoft Reader causes other types of corruption. Also, if you create the fields in InDesign, it uses non-standard appearances for the various states and even Reader/Acrobat doesn't always set them in the way you might expect, so it's best to create them in Acrobat.
    Your description is a bit confusing since you're calling them radio buttons and check boxes at the same time. Can you clarify what the original field type is?
    It is possible to set the various field appearance properties with a script, which could loop through all of the fields and make the needed changes, but without more information about what's causing the changes and exactly what the changes are, it's hard to suggest anything specific.
