OPS on Dell Hardware or Other

We are considering installation of a department sized Oracle Parallel Server using PowerEdge 2450 servers and a PowerVault enclosure. I would be extremely interested in any successes/failures at all with OPS on linux with any hardware vendor. There is a huge lack of information to be found about OPS on linux.

only issue I have so far with OPS on Linux >is
the oracm (cluster manager) and oranm (node >monitor) processes seem to die >occaisionally with a shutdown abort...so >the node has to be rebooted...(they don't >want to come up other wise)in the admin guide of 8.1.7.0.1 for linux,
it said shutdown abort will cause a node reset. that is normal.
I am really looking forward to the Oracle 9i
Real Application Cluster for Linux,'coz in the presentation I've seen,it said write-to-write lock collision will be handled by cache
fusion now, that means u don't have to do the
partitioning anymore to get parallel server benefit.
Thta's very interesting,I would like to see how they work.

  • Dell Hardware on Linux or Solaris x86

    Hi,
My company is considering moving to dell hardware in a move to drive TCO down. We currently run Sun sparc (240, 490,890) servers and they are nearing end of life. Doing the research, even visited some vendors and from what we've seen, running either RH 5 or even Solaris (x86) on Dell could prove to be a good move. We're running mostly 10.2 databases with a couple of 9.2 that we hope to have upgraded by year end.
Has anyone made a similar move and what is your experience? I worked on Dell about 4 years ago and back then we felt there were reliability issues. They crashed a little too often for my liking. I realize some of it was do to OS panics and not just hardware but that is part of the package.
Any feedbackup would be greatly appreciated.

If you're going to go Dell, you might aswell go the whole way and run RedHat.
Aside from the support issues mentioned (I'm not familiar with that aspect) Solaris has a history of being much more expensive to run (largely due to the cost of the employees that know it) with the major advantage being: better integration with Sun hardware.
As for Dell reliability, there's a reason we're an HP shop..

  • Solaris 10 on Dell hardware - To RAID or not....

    Hi Guys,
Looking for a bit of help. In my current role I administer solaris 7-10 on sparc but am soon to be involved in some installs of 10 in a PowerEdge 850. My concern is mirroring. I'm quite capable of using ODS/SDS to do this at the software level but am not familar with using SCSI RAID controllers (Dell have an option for RAID1 on SCSI RAID controller or no RAID and just a normal scsi contoller). Spose the question is, am I safe enough to just go without the RAID controller and mirror the diks up myself? Does anyone have any experience using the Dell SCSI RAID controller with Solaris 10? I've read about people having issues with driver support and not being able to see diks which worries me somewhat.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Tony

    Did you try it?
Unfortunately, I couldn't get a 2950 (I think that was the model #) to work properly even though it was supported. From that experience and everything I keep reading on here, I've come to the conclusion that Dell is not the way to go for servers.

  • Hardware Monitoring other platforms

    Hi all Managers ,
I want to know if we can monitor HP Unix Boxs , Tru Unix 64 Boxs and Linux systems with sun management center ?
Are there agents smc created for those platforms?
    Thanks

You dont by any chance do config readers for fujitsu
    servers ?Ah, good question.
Responding from my own point of view there's definately demand for it, and integrating Fujitsu's WSA SNMP info into SunMC would be mostly a turn-the-crank type of exercise... but Fujitsu currently won't "support" WSA info merged into SunMC (i.e. if they change a feature that makes it stop working, they're under no financial obligation to fix it), and, a bigger issue, Sun provides no support for SunMC itself on Fujitsu hardware (although 99% of the features work fine).
So it'd be a very useful product, but if the SunMC or Fujitsu ends go "BOOM!", and the customer is left without support... it'd make the integration software a hard sell.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • My macbook pro keyboard has stopped working overnight. The DEL button, along with O and P are acting strange. The DEL button is adjusting screen brightness and the O isnt working at all. Is this hardware related? or a software issue?

The left side of the keyboard seems to be working fine but the DEL button and other buttons are doing strange commands. The DEL button is adjusting the brightness and other F commands.
The O is not working at all. Some other letters are coming up with other characters.

Try a different keyboard with your computer if possible. If it woks well, it's a hardware problem.

  • Other DB hardware + Exadata Storage?

Lets say I have a number of database machines on say, Dell hardware using an EMC SAN. Can I:
    1) Swap out the EMC SAN for an Exadata Storage Server?
    2) Run non-11gR2 (10.2, 11.1) databases against an Exadata Storage Server, knowing that things like Smart Cache simply won't work?
    3) Store data from non-Oracle applications on an Exadata Storage Server? Lets say I have a bunch of MySQL databases on other servers, can I point them at Exadata for storage?

Infiniband infrastructure is required and in custom deployments (non-DB Machine), would have to be provided by the customer.
    2) Exadata V2 requires DB 11gR2.
    3) No. Exadata storage is available to databases via ASM diskgroups.

  • Has anybody had an issue with System State Backups on a Dell PowerEdge R510 Server running Server 2008 R2?

    Hi,
We have recently had issues running system state backups on our 2008 R2 Domain Controllers.  They are running on Dell PowerEdge R510 Physical Hardware.  Whenever you initiate a system state backup,  the Domain Controller becomes unresponsive
forcing us to physically reboot it.   Nothing in the Event logs or the Dell Open Management Hardware Software indicates issues with Phyiscal disks but we can always replicate the issue by starting the system state backup.
The system state backup is initialted as a batch file that runs as a scheduled task.   the commands run are as follows:
WBADMIN START SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -backupTarget:[drive letter] -quiet
We have 4 Domain Controllers with identical disk configurations.  When the DCs were setup I confirmed the system state backups were working but the issue started occuring sometime in Dec 2014.  We are going to run the Dell Hardware Update Utility
to update the RAID, BIOS, Firmware updates but Has anyone experienced a similar issue that may have been triggerd by a Microsoft Patch?
    Thanks,
    Kevin C.
    kconway@fnalgov

    Hi Kevin,
This issue could be due to the Mountmgr.sys driver incorrectly maintains a global mutex. This behavior causes a deadlock situation in the Mountmgr.sys driver.
Please install the hotfix in the article below to resolve the issue:
A computer stops responding because of a deadlock situation in the Mountmgr.sys driver in running Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

  • I want to connect two microphones trough an AudioLink III hardware in Adobe Connect

    Hi everybody,
I´m trying to connect an AudioLink III hardware in a Mac OS to use two microphones in the same meeting in Adobe Connect. But, I don´t know why, just it´s working one channel, not both. In another hand, using another sound hardware it works, but it didm´t work with the AudioLink III sound hardware.  Any idea?
I have to say that in system preferences in the Mountain Lion Mac OS, the two channels from the AudioLink III is working property. The problem comes in my Adobe Connect meeting.
I hope anybody can help us.
Sorry for my grammar. Greetings from Spain.

    Hi Sameer,
Yeah, I select the correct Audio input device, in this case, USB Audio. The program recognize the hardware, but just one of the two channels, that´s the problem. I tried under Windows SO too, but with the same results. I suppose that´s a problem with this hardware.
Thanks for your answer and your time.

  • Quadro K2000 Mercury Hardware Acclerated Encoding

    Hello,
I have got a question about hardware acclerated encoding with a Nvidia Quadro K2000.
We have got a video clip that we want to encode in 720p H264. Graphics card was recognized by Premiere, Premiere itself switched to the correct Hardware acclerated encoder.
However, it isn't working, video isn't encoding unless I select Fully Software as the encoder. Driver is brand new downloaded from Nvidia website.
There is no error message, it just goes to the progress bar screen and after that: big nothing, no progress at all, no file gets written to disk.
Any ideas? Are there special drivers neeeded? Is the Card unsupported despite it is listed as a supported one?

Agree with cc_merchant.  16GB RAM is the current minimum for glitch free editing, as the software will normally consume 8-12GB while active.  Minimal disk spec should be one system disk, and if possible, a 2-disk raid running on a separate buss for project/video files.   If you go the raid route and use a raid card, be sure the card is placed on the PCI slot with the fastest lane, and not to interfere with other cards.  Another reason for using a raid card is that it frees up one buss on the mobo so you can add a 3rd hard drive for scratch/media files.   Never fill the drives past the 50% mark to avoid issues with performance due to fragmentation, etc.  Move completed projects off onto a external drive for storage, and only use that external drive for the transfer, disconnecting when not in use to free up resourced during edits.
The magic bullet or holy grail of a good editing system is the careful memory management and routing of data on the system buss.  Avoiding conflict, collisions and latency.  I've been doing the above configurations since 1999, owning several systems, all Dell Precisions.

  • Dell, SLES11 and OpenIPMI

I am a bit confused... about the Dell support for ZLM.
I am going to install two new Dell Poweredge servers using SLES11 64bit.
According to the ZLM doc I need to upgrade OpenIPMI "Before you can use these features, you must install a newer release of the OpenIPMI driver than that included in the currently supported Linux distributions".
It has a link to the a Dell site, but the newest version there is for SLES9. OpenIPMI is on the SLES DVD, but is this really too old?
Or is the documentation really outdated?
I am pretty confused as if there are extra steps to take to get the Dell stuff working. I do get the mirror process of course.
    Thanks,
