Opteron 165 + 4x512 crucial ballistix problem

hello all! glad to finally be a part of this forum after owning my faithful k8n-neo4 for two years.
i have been running an opty 165, oc'd to 2.7 ghz for the past several months. it was running on a surprisingly reliable set of corsair value select (2x512mb), which were managing 2.5-3-3-6 timings at 214mhz. anyway, craving to get just a little more life out of my 939 rig, i went ahead and bought two 1gb kits of crucial ballistix ddr500 memory; this way, i could double my ram and hopefully pull my opty up to 3+ ghz (i'd ran it at 2.9, but my memory was limiting its stability. divider wouldn't run stable below 140). now, i have a total of 4x512 mb or ram, populating all of the memory slots.
unfortunately, i'm running into the following problems:
a. the divider won't run stable under 180! not sure if it's the board or the ram; the VS ran at a 140 divider, but this ram seems quite nice when not running a divider, which causes me to lean away from the possibility of it being bad.
b. sometimes even on a 180 multiplier it refuses to post! i'll have everything running smoothly, and then i reboot after trying to get a bit more out of it, and bam! even on the same settings i just had it on, or settings ridiculously lower, it refuses to post. requires a total reset.
so basically, i need to know if anyone else has had the same problem with ram dividers as i have, and if so, how they fixed it. i'm starting to wonder whether this board has something fried on it, and i need some input before rma'ing it (which puts my system out of commission for several weeks).

You didn't waste money, what Bosskiller says is just white paper specs(although you won't get around command rate 2T), but you are trying to run outside specs when you overclock anyway.

The CPU multi on the Opteron 165 is maxed at 9x, and i know this stepping will hit 3.0 ghz (CCBBE 0610DPMW). so, a very high fsb is required to get it up there, which means i need to get mem index down to at least 166, if not 150. the lowest i can get it down to stably(sometimes) is 180. for the timings, i've tried 2.5-3-3-8, 2.5-4-4-8, 3-3-3-8, 3-4-4-8, and 2.5-[auto]-[auto]-[auto], all at 2T.
just finished running memtest86 on it, and it hit about 13,000 errors on test 5. none on any other tests. this could be from bad memory, or could it be from the 4 dimm problem? this was at 250x9, 1:1, 2.5-3-3-8.

I am not good at RAM setting but the 'Timings Table' shows there is XMP-1600 profile available so I believe it would be enough to turn on that memory profile in BIOS.

MSI K8N Neo Platinum & Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM Problem

I have had MSI K8N Neo Platinum and 1x Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM for 11 months.
I have had 1x Crucial Ballistix 512MB RAM for 2.5 months, for a total of two.
I have had MSI GeForce 6600GT (NX6600GT-VTD) 128MB AGP for 1 month.
For about 1.5 to 2 weeks, I have been seeing random crashes while playing PC games.
I started a thread on the Hard OCP forums a few days ago. I did not know MSI had forums =)

ALL RIGHT, after almost FOUR months my issue is FINALLY resolved.
It is amazing how much time passes when you are hesitant to buy parts unless you are 95% sure it will fix the problem.
OK, here is an update as to what I remember.
I went to BIOS 1.4 and tried many different physical and BIOS RAM configurations (Different seating, different number of DIMMs, different RAM timings, voltages, etc).
I concluded that I could not make my PC 100% stable, but I could get it darn close. With certain settings, such as DDR400, 2-2-2-6, 1T, 2.80V, Aggressive Timing enabled, Memtest failed test #5 every time (this is spec for my RAM). With other settings, such as DDR333, 2.5-3-3-7, 2T, Auto V, Aggressive Timing enabled, Memtest failed test #5 maybe once out of 5000.
I also concluded that the RAM voltage and Aggressive Timing setting was having a big impact. Some settings would not work (failed Memtest) with RAM at 2.80V but would work with RAM at Auto V. Some settings would not work (failed Memtest) with Aggressive Timing enabled but would work with it disabled.
Finally, I started to occasionally get R,G,R,G (Processor Initialization) on the D-Bracket upon cold-start & warm-start, which suggests a PSU issue:

That pushed me over the top, and I decided to buy a new PSU (TG-480-U22) and a new SATA HDD (WD2500KS) just because.

Problem with P965 platinum and crucial ballistix tracer 6400

i just buy a new pair of crucial ballistix tracer but they dont work too well with the board, i try to set it at 4-4-4-12-24 but it wont boot, so i have to set it to 4-4-4-12-38 to boot my old corsair were runing at 5-4-4-12-24, i don't know if the boar don't work well with those memorys, any one having this problem?

OS 10.4.10 incompatibility with Crucial Ballistix RAM?

I have two 1 GB Crucial Ballistix RAM modules in my G5 1.8 Dual processor, in addition to the two 512 MB modules that came with the computer. Everything was working fine until I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.10. At that point, the two 1GB modules were no longer recognized in the system profiler. Crucial said they are aware of this issue, but that they believe it is an OS bug. They are willing to swap out the RAM, but if the OS is the issue that doesn't really help. Has anyone else had any experience with this problem? Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks in advance for your help and interest.

Crucial Ballistix (single sided) Not working with 1.B3 Sideffect

Uptil now I was using 4*512 Crucial Ballistix PC4000 BL6464Z505.16TG memory modules that are CL2.5. This is 4 modules of double Sided memory.
It was running at DDR400, 2-2-2-7 2.8V and windows was running fine, with the exception of a few BSODs time to time, and memtest86 giving a few errors.
So I replaced my memory (though the errors could just have been timing related) and crucial sent me 4*512 Ballistix PC4000 BL6464Z503.8TD rated at CL3. All are matched memories as before. But these new memory modules are single sided.
Now when I put 1,2,3 or 4 of these modules in, the system goes past the POST, but then hangs. Even hangs within the BIOS setup manu. Just locks up.
I put my old memory back in and everything starts off and works fine.
Is there some problem with this new BIOS I am using ?
Should I switch back to official or sideeffects 1.A ballistix edition.

I also tried Sideeffect especially modded Ballistic edition BIOS and had to remove it due to instability caused by the pernanent Memory Timing changes that he has included in it. Other unofficial BIOS also have permanent memory timing changes included in them which can cause you hardship. This is why they recommend that you try their modded memory timings on your system with A64Tweaker first before actually flahing your BIOS.
I am now using 1A3 Rev4 No Temo by Syar and it is working very well. All BIOS options are unhidden and temperatures have been remove. Syar has also not introduce any personalise memory timing so the BIOS is unlikely to cause a conflict on your system. You can download it from here: http://www.msi.sploitz.com/

Opteron 165 at K8NGM2-IL

Hello, I want to do Over Clock my CPU ,But I did not find any option in K8NGM2-IL motherboard BIOS.
My friend told me that the model of this motherboard is not supported Over Clock feature thats why I cant change any figure in BIOS.
Is there any other way to Over Clock the CPU on same Motherboard with the help of Third party Software or any released ver. of BIOS that gives this option ?

K8N SLI platinum and opteron 165

I have just upgraded to an opteron 165 from a 146 and I am having problems changing to multiprocessor support. I am using bios 3.8 but I only have the options standard pc and acpi pc in device manager. It correctly detects cpu at startup and there are 2 cpu's listed in processor but I only get one graph in task manager and the option to look at each core in cpu z 1.31 is greyed out so it is only using 1 core. Any ideas? The stepping of cpu is CCB1E 0550.

K8t Neo2 won't run dual channel with Opteron 165

Hi,
I have a K8t Neo 2, and was running a Newcastle 3500+ on it, with 2x1GB PC3200 memory sticks (Buffalo memory) in dual channel mode (ie DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 populated) without any problems. I replaced the 3500+ with a new Opteron 165, and the system would not post. One of the red lights on the D-bracket was red, the rest were out.
To troubleshoot, I removed one of the memory sticks, and the system booted fine. I then put the 2nd memory stick in a non-dual channel setup (DIMM 1 and DIMM 2 populated), and it booted fine. If I try booting the system with the RAM in any dual channel enabled configuration, it will not post. I verified that it isn't a RAM issue, because I have 2 sticks of 512 MB ShikaXRam, which has always worked fine, and I got the same behavior as I got with the Buffalo RAM. I have tried changing the RAM clocking in the BIOS, and that also doesn't help, because it seems it reads the speed automatically no matter what you set the DRAM clocking page to.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this board not Opteron 165 compatible with dual channel memory?

Alright, I tried all of the steps mentioned, setting optimized defaults, even tried changing all memory timings to the most conservative available. The only way the system will boot with 2 DIMMs installed is if they are in the two slots furthest from the CPU. It will also post with 3 DIMMs installed in any configuration.
I also have a generic 500 w PSU that is rated 32a on the 12v rail that I tried quickly plugging in (just plugged the 2 PSU connectors to the motherboard without hooking any of the IDE devices to it) It still exhibits the same behaviour. With no hard drives, optical drives, etc plugged in, wouldn't that pretty much eliminate the PSU as an issue?
I don't want to just spend $100 on a new PSU if it's highly unlikely to be the issue. Does this sound like something I'd need to replace the motherboard to fix? Is the performance difference between dual channel and single channel enough to even warrant buying a new board? The reason I want to avoid replacing the board right now is because I still have an AGP card, and don't want to replace it right now as well as the board, and getting another AGP based board seems to be stupid. Also, AGP boards are really hard to find now, and most of them available locally run on the ULi chipset

Which Crucial Ballistix for Neo2; PC3200 or PC4000?

I've read the sticky at the top of the forum regarding memory that works well but this is about choosing between a shortlist of 2.
I'm going for Crucial Ballistix, 2 sticks of 512MB.
The choice is PC3200 which is rated at 2-2-2-6 or PC4000 rated at 2.5-4-4-8.
Price is almost identical - the PC4000 is £1 more per stick.
Baiscally I have absolutely no idea what the numbers mean so can someone give me the short answer please?
PC3200 or PC4000?
P.S. If it makes any difference, I'm not into overclocking.
Edit: This will be used on a Neo2 and AMD 64 3000+

BUT the modules has a lower CAS speed (3 opposed to 2), therefor the flow of data between the CPU and memory isn't much faster than the first example. 6012MB per second opposed to the default 5998MB per second.
That small difference (14MB per second) could very well also be due to temperatures, voltages, your dog eating, your neighbour washing his car... In other words, neglectible.
So, to have some real performance gain with overclocking you need fast memories (CAS2), high clock speeds, and lots of luck. (And a well filled wallet, since those memory modules tends to be really expensive.)

Opteron 165 K8N Diamond plus: Simple question

Will this chip be ok on the original BIOS version, or does it need to be flashed to support Opterons.
Sorry if this has been addressed but I did not find an answer via search option I need to get a CPU ASAP. And it's between the Opteron 165 and a Athlon XP 4000+.

don't go for AM2. Intel's conroe is better. You know that a 2.66ghz conroe beats a 3.6ghz FX 57 and costs way less? Those conroes are amazing. They run on low voltage and get high overclocks on air.
Conroe will be out in july and i cannot wait. Im really sick of the inefficiency of A64. They are only effective if overclocked to the max but and many A64 tend to be duds, such as my opty 148. It is funny that an highly oced A64 on a phase change cooling system got beaten by a chip that is only aircooled

Msi neo2 and crucial ballistix

I found out that my 2x512 ddr400 crucial ballistix is bad. So i tested 1 of the sticks in dimm1 with memtest. It did 5 passes then i quit so i think one stick is fine. Either the other stick is bad or dimm2 is bad. How do i figure out if dimm2 is bad? I know that you can only have module in dimm1 or 3 if its single channel.
The settings on the ram was 2 2 2 6 1T 2.8v. Both were in dimm 1 and 2.

The nvidia Audio drivers should work with the realtek codec.
Or you can use the realtek audio drivers.
I prefer the nvidia audio drivers.

RD480 Neo2-Fi Bios-level Overclocking with Opteron 165

I have an inquiry regarding my ability to overclock my CPU (Opteron 165) with the RD480 Neo2-Fi motherboard via the motherboard. The settings for FSB, CPU voltage, Chipset Voltage, Ram Voltage are all locked out on the latest revision of the bios (V3.20). I am wondering whether this is simply an issue in that the Opteron 165 was just recently added to the list of supported CPU's (it works perfectly at the stock settings and o'c settings through CoreCenter) and the CPU ID just hasn't been added to the last bios. The overclocking options available to me through CoreCenter (which I dislike using very much, as it is very buggy and simply ugly) are all available and fully functional although somewhat limited(obviously you cannot change core voltage). If anyone has any advice please reply.

P35 Neo2 not booting with Crucial Ballistix PC8500 (2.2volts)

This is a psuedo overclocking issue, a mod can move it if need be.
So I got MSI's P35 Neo2 board and I'm frustrated with their whole package. I install everything and get into Windows and was naive enough to consider running MSI's Live Update, which nuked all possibilities of me getting this to the person I was building it for before Christmas. If this post seems too wishy-washy, that's why.
The problem is in the RAM I'm attempting to use. Crucial's Ballistix DDR2 1066 http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BL2KIT12864AA1065 wants to be run at 2.2 volts, and before updating the BIOS through live update it worked without a hitch. Now after I ran the update, it gives me errors.
By the way, how in high hell can MSI put out motherboards without documenting them properly? I spent hours trying to find out how to either change the voltage in the BIOS or do the same in Windows through the Dual Core utility. The latter ran, but never actually changed the voltage. And the BIOS - there's nothing in the manual or official online pages that tell you how to change the damn voltage! It was only after I searched through enough forums that a user suggested using Page Up-Page Down. Worked like a charm, but wow, if the manual or BIOS had said as much it would have saved me so much time.
So I do have the BIOS selected at 2.2 volts now, everything else set to auto. I save and reboot, but no luck. After three restarts the board tells me in very broken english that my attempted "overclock" has failed with settings reset to default. I get into the BIOS to find that the voltage is still at 2.2 (which makes sense, otherwise the system wouldn't boot at all, correct?) with all the other settings as they were before.
Question time:
1) The first BIOS revision worked with my RAM perfectly it seemed. Is there a way to "roll back" without busting out a floppy?
2) Why isn't the system booting? I know this is a RAM issue because if I break out a slower stick of DDR2 4200 that runs at the more "normal" 1.8 volts, it can get into Windows just fine. This is how I attempted to set the voltage using MSI's Dual Core utility to no avail.
I've heard good things about MSI motherboards, but these snags I've run into discourage me from using MSI in the future. Running a board's memory or CPU at higher voltages isn't rocket science, in fact so many memory vendors do it right out of the gate it's incredible you have to do the memory hot swap at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

OK, I've reflashed the BIOS back to v1.0 and now I'm able to boot once again with my Ballistix memory. Thank God for forum moderators and USB flash tools.
I might play with the BIOS further - I took a quick look at the revision changes and none really referenced changes in overclocking or RAM compatibility. As I already explained, I won't be able to get this machine to whom it's intended for until after Christmas so at this point I'm in no hurry as the problem is most definitely a BIOS issue.
Also, after examining my voltages confirmed by CPUz after reloading the v1.0 BIOS, the board correctly detected my memory's stock voltage at 2.2v, which is good to know and lines up with what I've experienced beforehand.
Hopefully they can fix this in a future BIOS revision, but since my Q6600 and RAM appears to be detected correctly at the moment I may never bother.
If anyone needs or wants me to look into this further or to reupdate the BIOS one at a time for documentation/research, let me know, otherwise consider this case closed.

Did any one test New Crucial BallistiX DDR400

Its a simple question about how well the New Ballistix DDR400 or DDR500 behaves with the MSI 865/875 boards .
So did any one got this new 2-2-2-5 babys ?
